chapter thirty-three

Bea thought where Marcus lived was bad. This place was even worse.

Aromas of soot and burning was inhaled, filling her lungs inch by inch. At that moment in time, she wished she had one of the masks many of the people around her were sporting. Dread began to swell in her stomach as the thought of herself catching the flare. Her eyes trailed to the side where Newt was also walking, in a trance at the town they were in.

Washing lines hung from towering building, clothes pegged to it. Although, Bea found it hard to believe that air like this was safe to breathe in, let alone dry your clothes. The brunette girl stumbled as a random citizen barged passed her in a busily way.

The whole town (if you could even call it a town) was extremely busy and bustling. Everyone walked in a rush as if they didn't want to be around other people for long - not that Bea could blame them. Men in masks hurriedly places bags upon bags in truck; swinging it onto the trailer where more men stood, piling it properly before they were handed another bag.

Bea pulled her jacket closer around her, covering her head with the hood. She attempted to keep up with the rest of the group which were quickly making their way to the forefront of this chaos.

"This place had already gone through hell," she heard Jorge say to Thomas.

"More like hell and back," she mumbled under her breath.

"We just need to stick together," her brother replied to the old man causing Bea to roll her eyes.

Oh yeah, because I was definitely planning on running away to start a family with homeless Cranks.

"We are the voices of the voiceless. They hide behind their walls, thinking they can keep the cure for themselves, while they watch the rest of us wither and rot."

Bea's head snapped behind her, like the rest of the group, as their ears perked up at the loud voice. The male voice boomed through a megaphone as the person in question was sitting in the trailer of a truck that was driving in their direction. The herds of people dispersed, letting the truck through. Bea slipped to the side, bumping into Brenda who caught her by the arm. Cheers echoed and the man's words, urging him to carry on with his speech.

"But there are more of us then them. And I say, we rise up and take back what's ours! Let's bring back a victory!"

The crowd cheered once more as the man in the truck came clearer. Him along with several other men in the trailer wore masks - that seemed a lot saver than many other people's - along with army gear. Some more were even perched on the top of the truck, holding guns. Bea raised an eyebrow in curiosity at them. At the rebellion against WCKD, the 'outsiders' seemed to have formed.

One group of the 'army members' in particular seemed too interested in Bea and their group. She shielded her face, looking away from them.

"Hermana, hurry up!"

Bea yelped as Jorge grabbed her by the arm, pulling her forwards as an indicator to keep walking. She remained in front of him as a way for him to keep an eye on her. One of the boy's locked eyes with Thomas and the brunette boy looked back in a shocked kind of way before blinking and carrying on walking. But then Bea saw something that she never expected. Something - that looked scarily similar to a chip - flashed red at the base if Thomas' neck.

She was about to say something when she heard a humming from above her. WCKD drones.

Stalkers.

The sound of cheering and chanting echoed in their ears as they rushed forwards. Some held banners and signs, spray painted with phrases like 'Voices of the Voiceless' and 'There is no cure' and even one saying 'WCKD can suck my dick' which made Bea giggle.

"This way!" she heard Jorge say as the group huddle down a small away, a not-so-nice aroma of sewages filling the air. Bea hurried forwards, stumbling as the person in front of her - Thomas - came to halt.

She slipped round the side of him, looking at what he was gazing at. The wall. It towered a couple dozen feet high, caving in at the centre. The metal structure was hard and sturdy; the hundred or so protesters behind, still no match for it.

"That's our way in!" Thomas shouted over the noise, pointing ahead of them. He began pushing through the crowd, the rest of the quickly following behind him.

"Thomas, this is not what you're looking for," Jorge argued loudly behind him, "All these people trying to find a way in, and you think you're gonna find something that they can't?"

He has a point.

Bea heaved forwards, feeling incredibly squashed by the people around her. She felt Brenda cling onto her arm, also not wanting to lose anybody in the crowd. The protesters were more ruthless here; more vicious, more passionate, more violent. Nobody cared that they were bumping into people at this point.

"We've come this far. I'm not backing down!" she heard her brother respond to Jorge. Brenda tugged on Bea's arm, indicating for her to hurry up as Newt and Fry appeared beside them.

"What the hell did we get ourselves into?" Fry breathed out in astonishment. Bea laughed, shaking her head in helplessness.

Her eyes caught a glimpse of two of the army people from early with the gas masks on, the red visor shielding their eyes. One in particular was staring at Bea at her friends and the girl began to feel an unsettling felling brew in her stomach. As they approached the front, they met people who were throwing any object they could find at the wall.

"Move out my way!" Jorge yelled, as Bea got a glimpse of the old man and Thomas passing a barrier at the front.

The brunette girl clutched harder onto Brenda: the two girls, Fry and Newt being pushed back further and further away from Thomas and Jorge. Her heart hammered against her chest, the unsettling feeling way more prominent. Her eyes flitted to the side again, latching on the army men who were most certainly following them.

"They're following us aren't they?" she whispered anxiously to Newt who was beside her.

He nodded, "Come on."

The four pushed their way to the front, now not caring who they barged into. Brenda removed her hood, staring in awe at the massive wall. Bea's eyes widened in shock; she hadn't expected the wall to have been so big from far away, but now it looked like a gigantic skyscraper that was mocking her.

"We gotta go!" Newt shouted to Jorge and Thomas, "Look." The two boys swivelled their head, looking at where Newt was gesturing too. The army men were pushing through the crowd, gaining distance on them. The two looked shocked before Jorge assertively whipped out his gun.

But before they had a chance to escape a loud churning echoed around the wall, vibrating against their eardrums. They froze, slowly turning around to face the wall again. Bea gasped in shock as large machines appeared out of the roof of the wall and when she squinted hard enough she could see armed WCKD guards behind them. The mechanical weapons flashed red signalling it had found it's new victims.

The crowd was silent until they began crying and shouting in fear, rushing away from the wall which seemed quite ironic. Bea watched as the next few seconds happened in slow motion; a missile launched from one of the weapons, flying faster than the speed of light as it crashed onto the ground viciously with a puff of smoke.

"Let's go!" Jorge yelled impatiently at Bea and also Thomas who was watching the smoke fizzle out and puff into great clouds into the air.

Snapping back into reality, the siblings began rushing away, knowing what was about to happen next. More missiles crashed onto the shaking ground behind them as they began to sprint away. Bea's lungs burned as she was once again running...away from WCKD.

They headed back the way that they had came, under the stone ledge, through the alleyway and out the other side.

"Come one, come one," Brenda urged, waving her hands forwards as another missile launched merely metres beside them. Both girls coughed harshly, still in sprint.

WCKD are definitely targeting us.

"This way!" she heard Newt call out and she followed his voice for him to be nowhere to be seen. She about to shout for him when two hands grabbed her from behind.

"Hey!" she spat, instantly grabbing the hands in attempt to move them away. Thrashing about, she kicked her arms and legs, but it was now use. She felt like she was flying for a second as she landed in a van on her hands and knees.

A new pair of hands help her up onto a seat as the van door was slammed shut and began zooming away. She glanced up to see Thomas and Brenda. "You okay?" he asked his sister worriedly. She nodded shuffling next to him, Brenda being on the side.

She turned to face in front of her, staring face to face with the army men in gas masks from before. The once unsettling feeling - now had confetti and balloons screaming 'DANGER'. If only she had done something about the warning signs before. It then sunk in.

They had been kidnapped
