chapter thirty-eight
Bea stood in position.
Feet shoulder-width apart, back straight, taser gun held to her chest. Beside her, Gally was doing the exact same. The pair were inside the WCKD building, 'guarding' one of the exits, while they were waiting for a suited up Thomas to come in with Teresa. Meanwhile, Newt was strolling around; him being the signal for the group to move to the next stage of the plan.
On the other side of the complex, Fry and Brenda were doing their part. Their job was to secure transport; they had planned to use a crane to steal one of buses to transport the kids away before eventually getting them back to the Army Base Camp.
Bea glanced to the side, through her tinted visor, to see Thomas and Teresa marching into the building. After a couple of metres, they were stopped by Newt, who nodded to Bea and Gally only a few seconds later.
It's go time.
A part of her was nervous; the plan was pretty good but it wasn't foolproof. But on top of that was the excitement of seeing Minho again - that overpowered most of the anxiety.
A good posture still kept, her and Gally marched over to the other three before Teresa guided them to a separate part of the floor. Bea's eyes occasionally flitted from left to right, double-checking that nobody was suspicious of them.
They swiftly turned down another slip corridor, Teresa leading them. Reaching the door at the end, the girl scanned her thumb, the checkbox lighting up green, before she swung the door wide open.
Bea lifted her gun to her cheek, the guys doing the same as they entered a stairway. Quickly, they began jogging down the stairs until Gally called out.
"Hold on," the boy paused, causing the group to look back in confusion, "I can get in here."
Pulling his mask off of his face, his hand skimmed over a silver panelled wall that had a square electrical box on it.
Thomas nodded at him, "Throw me the walkie."
Gally did as Thomas asked before the brunette boy disappeared further down the staircase. Bea jogged up the passing Teresa, who stared upwards, and Newt who was clutching onto the banister.
Harshly, the blonde boy yanked his mask off of his face, gasping for air. He erupted into a small coughing fit, each cough sounding worse then the last. Bea sidled over to the boy sympathetically, rubbing his back and pulling his arm to stand up straighter.
"You okay?" she whispered. He nodded in response, tugging on the cotton warmer around his neck. Her eyes caught Teresa who was standing on the staircase, staring at Newt with an unreadable look in her eyes. Frowning she turned Newt away so his back was facing the other girl.
"We'll get the serum soon, okay?" her reassured the boy who looked a whole lot paler now. Around the edges of his face - especially on his neck - his veins were more prominent, gradually becoming a more deep purple colour.
Fuck. Soon has to become sooner or he's gonna fucking die.
Bea shook the negative thoughts away as the sound of Gally drilling into the electrical box, echoed in her eardrums.
The sound of footsteps vibrated against the walls as Thomas came back up the staircase.
"Frypan we're in. How you doing?" he spoke into the walkie talkie.
"Yeah...yeah. I'm getting their. Say hello to Minho for me."
"Hang in the buddy," Thomas replied.
---
With a grunt, Gally pulled open the hatch. After 10 or so minutes of drilling, he had managed to get it open. They were greeted with a bunch of wires and a striking blue one in the middle.
"This will work," he declared. Bea helped Gally with the wires while Thomas spoke with Brenda on the walkie talkie. For the first time in this operation, Bea found herself actually being useful.
Bea placed a gadget on the inside of the door before slamming it shut. She faced Gally, holding her fist out for him to bump it. The taller boy raised an eyebrow questioningly before chuckling and pumping it anyway.
"Thomas. Walkie."
The boy chucked the tool to Gally who pressed down on the side button. "Lawrence. We're in position."
No response.
"Lawrence?" he called again. Bea swallowed a lump in her throat, pulling off her own mask for the time being.
"If he hasn't switched off them cameras we're dead meat," Thomas commented, his eyebrows furrowed.
"Yeah, I know." Gally snapped. "He'll do his job. Don't worry that pretty, little head of yours."
Bea snorted, rolling her eyes at Gally's comment but there was a small, tiny, miniscule feeling inside of her that they hadn't switched the cameras off. The group slowly turned their attention to Teresa who was at the side of the group.
The brunette girl nodded, turning to face the keypad on the other door. Hesitantly, she glanced back to see intimidating glares from the Gladers. Sighing, she swiped her thumb on the scanner, sounding a ding as the mechanical doors panned open.
Bea pulled her mask back down, pressing the taser gun flush against her cheek. Guards were revealed on the other side of the door and without thinking the group began shooting.
Bolts of electricity zapped out of the taser, electrocuting the guards as they crumpled to the floor in pain. Rushing past the bodies, they made their way to the other end of the corridor.
"Where's the kids?" Bea yelled to Teresa, shooting down another guard.
"Through here," the girl replied as the group hurriedly followed her.
The group dispersed, each going to a different dorm door. Bea scanned the ID card that her suit had, before yanking the door wide up.
She was met with fearful kids, huddled away from her. Her eyes softened as she ripped her mask over her head. Smiling warmly at them, she rushed them out, "Come on. We're here to get you out."
She span around to see Gally, Newt and Tom doing the same while Teresa stood still in the centre off the hallway.
"Hurry up!" she called out to the few kids who weren't moving.
"You're safe with us now."
Her, Newt and Tom ushered the kids into a small group while Gally interrogated a guard on how to get into the vault. Her eyes scanned the group for a certain someone. Frowning, she glanced at the last group Thomas had released, who shared the same expression on his face.
Eyes blazing with anger she turned to Teresa.
"Do you find this funny?"
"Wha-What? No-"
"Is there any other dorms?"
"No this is all of them-"
"Then where the fuck is Minho?" she spat angrily.
"I-I don't know-"
"Bullshit," Bea glared.
"Believe me, I-I don't-" she stammered
"Then find out!"
Bea's eyes flitted to Newt who was worriedly pacing around the room while Thomas stared at Teresa.
Turning to the computers, Teresa logged on with Bea standing directly behind here. Maybe Teresa wasn't lying. Maybe she truly didn't know where Minho was.
Her fingers flew across the keyboard until Minho's ID picture popped onto his screen. He looked the same...but different. His usual gelled up hair was flattened, a few strands sprawled across his forehead; his eyes held dark bags underneath him as if he never had a chance to sleep. And the most important thing was that the spark in his eyes was gone. Flushed out. As if it was never there.
"He's been moved..." Teresa murmured, rushing to find where he had been moved to.
"Yeah no shit," Bea deadpanned, rolling her eyes impatiently.
"Somebody's moved him up to the medical wing...?" Teresa frowned while Thomas peered over her shoulder to have a look at the computer screen.
The girl glanced upwards to the boy behind her, "Thomas...that's on the other side of the building-"
"Well that's where you're taking me," he ordered, grabbing his mask, "Right now."
The two got ready to leave when Newt stalked past them, grabbing his own helmet. "I'm coming with you."
"No," Thomas responded immediately, shaking his head, "You have to stay here with Gally and wait for the serum."
"Look," Newt said, "You can't do this own your own. Minho comes first remember?"
"But Newt-"
"Tom just let him," Bea pleaded to her brother. His eyes bore into hers as tried to get across that this might be the last time he ever sees him. The brunette boy sighed, chewing on his lip while contemplating.
"Just go! You're wasting time," Gally shouted from the other side of the room. "I'll get the serum and me and Bea will meet you out back."
Thomas nodded. "Okay, fine. Okay, let's go."
The two boys and Teresa span on their heel exiting the room.
"Hey Greenie," Gally called out, causing Thomas to pause and turn around, "Good luck."
The boy didn't respond, he just span around again, rushing down the corridor. Bea's eyes trailed back to Gally who was currently drilling through the door of the vault. The kids they had saved were huddled across one side of the room, talking to each other in a hushed tones.
"Hey, are all you guys okay?" Bea asked awkwardly. She wasn't the best with kids - she hadn't really been surrounded with them. The idea has more times than often popped into her head about having her own kids and what it would be like. But in a world like this she began to reconsider.
Would Harriet want kids?
Her eyes widened at the thought, at her brain going instantly to Harriet out of anyone. If anything that just confirmed her feelings for the other girl even more. She felt herself blushing as flashes of their kiss appeared in her head.
She was snapped back to reality when she felt a hand on her arm . Glancing to the side, she saw a young teary-eyed girl, barely looking twelve-years-old, desperate for her attention.
"Hey, what's wrong?" she asked, trying her best to console the girl.
Harriet would be way better at this than I am.
"Are we really safe now?" the girl asked, biting down on her bottom lip to prevent it from quivering. "No more maze? No more WCKD?"
"I promise. Pinky promise," she said, holding out her pinky finger. The other girl glanced down, interlocking their pinkies for a few seconds before letting go. "And I never break a pinky promise."
What broke Bea from her cute interaction with the young girl was the sound of alarms. The blaring noise rang in her ears, as the alarm bell in the corner of the hallway flashed red.
Shit.
Her head immediately snapped over to Gally who was still drilling into the panel of the vault. The boy turned his head to Bea also, their eyes locking with worry. Murmurs began to erupt from the kids which Bea desperately tried to hush.
"Hey-Hey guys it's okay. No need to panic. We're going to get you guys out."
Letting out a shaky breath, she stalked over to Gally, crouching beside him. "Are you almost done?" she hissed quietly, knowing it wouldn't be long before were caught.
"Almo-" he muttered, before cutting himself off as the panel dropped from the vault. "Done."
With the help of Bea, he yanked the handle open revealing rows upon rows of bottles of serum. There must have been hundreds of bottles altogether.
They definitely kept themselves busy here.
While Bea waited outside, he stuffed in one of the bottles into a small black pouch, before exiting.
"Okay. Guys. We gotta get out of here, now!" he yelled to the kids before turning to a short boy beside them. "Here," he said, handing him the pouch containing the serum, "Guard this with your life. You understand."
The boy nodded feverishly at Gally's order as Bea signalled for Gally to stay at the front of the group and that she would stay at the back. Not bothering to pull her mask down, she ushered the kids in front of her to follow Gally.
Quickly and silently, they exited the passage way into the stairwell they were in, in the beginning. Instead of going up, like how they had entered, they headed downwards towards the ground level where the car park was. The annoying alarm still rang loudly, not showing any sign of stopping.
"Stay low guys," Gally ordered from the front of the group, crouching down. The kids copied his stance as they stayed hidden by the pillar. "Go. Go. Go."
Bea's eyes flitted around for a bus but it was nowhere to be seen. "Where the hell is Brenda?" she whispered loudly to Gally.
As if on cue, she heard a screeching of tires, causing her to halt in her footsteps. In front of her, a bus had also skidded to a halt, revealing Brenda in the passengers seat. The girl gave a lopsided grin as she glanced outside the window. "Come on. Let's go!"
"Let's go. Quickly!" Gally barked orders at the kids, "Front and Back. Come on, let's go. Move it."
"Where's Thomas?" Brenda asked the two teenagers.
They turned to each other frowning. "We thought he'd be with you..." Bea trailed off. Brenda's eyes widened with fear, about to exit the bus before Gally stopped her.
"Hey-Wait here with the kids," he suggested, "I'll go get him."
"I'm coming with you," Bea piped in.
"No you're not-"
"That's my brother out there Gally. My brother. You really expect me to not go out their looking for him?" she snapped, exasperatedly.
Gally sighed licking his lips, nodding, before turning to Brenda. "Okay. Just...wait here okay. Wait here. We'll find him."
Bea broke out in a jog along with Gally across the carpark as they both pulled their masks down. They had gathered at this point that he definitely wouldn't be in the building considering how all the guards were patrolling it.
Turning swiftly left, they headed through the tunnel, exiting the WCKD complex. Bea felt herself beginning to panic. What if they didn't find Thomas? What if Newt didn't get the serum? What if they didn't find Minho?
She found herself mindlessly following Gally until something caught her eye. Or rather someone. She paused, gripping onto Gally's arm for him to stop. Glancing upwards, she pointed at one of the windows with a gigantic hole in the glass.
"Is...Is that who I think it is?" she murmured. Gally eyes followed from the pool on the floor to where her finger was pointing, nodding in confirmation.
Minho, Newt and Thomas were standing around 100m high in one of the room by the cracked window. And they were about to jump out.
"Follow my lead," he said, straightening his back, pulling his taser gun to his chest. Bea did the same, switching back into her 'guard' character.
Although she was following the boy, her eyes were trained on the three other boys jumping out of the window with a scream. The scream obviously belonging to Thomas.
A group of 4 guards had also joined Bea and Gally, clearly not suspicious of them. Bea found herself smiling underneath her mask at Thomas flipping off Jason who was standing at the edge of the room that they were previously in.
Snapping back into character, she locked her gun, pulling it closer to her chest. As the three scrambled out of the pool - Thomas helping Newt - Bea, Gally and the guard edged their way closer to them.
"You three don't move!" Gally commanded. Bea watched as Thomas mumbled something to Minho. That's when she realised something.
Where the hell is Teresa?
"Take it easy!" another guard yelled out, clearly falling for Bea and Gally's plan. The group edged closer and closer to the point where they were only a couple of feet in front of them. All Bea wanted to do at the point was run up to Minho and hug him - but she couldn't.
Thomas hand nudged backwards, reaching for his gun until the same guard cut him off. "Ah, Ah, Ah! Don't even think about!"
Bea decided to keep quiet. She wasn't sure how many women were WCKD guards but she had gathered that it wasn't many.
Maybe because women have more common sense.
Bea smirked at her own joke as the guards threw orders at the Gladers. "Get on your knees with your hands in the air-"
They were cut off by bolts of electricity piecing through their skin from Gally's taser gun. Crying in pain, they crumpled to the ground, words along the lines of 'stupid bitch' coming from one of the guard's mouth.
The two jogged forwards to meet the three boys looking at them with very confused but cautious looks on their faces. Not being able to contain her excitement, Bea whipped off her helmet, a grin plastered onto her face. Minho's jaw just dropped further in disbelief.
The girl squealed (something she had never done in her life) dropping her helmet to the floor and throttling herself towards Minho, throwing her arms around his neck into a hug. The raven-haired boy reciprocated the hug, wrapping his arms tightly around her waist, spinning her around.
"What the hell?" he mumbled into her shoulder, "I can't believe you're here." He leaned up, gathering up Bea's appearance in his head.
"Of course, I'm here!" she gushed excitedly, "You think those idiots would be able to save you without me?"
"Well....." Minho trailed off, earning a punch to the shoulder from Bea. He sighed happily, wrapping an arm around her shoulder.
The three boys were still cautious - Minho the most - glancing at Gally who still hadn't revealed himself, not wanting to interrupt Bea's reunion. She nodded at the boy, motioning for him to take off his helmet.
And he did just that.
Thomas and Newt breathed out sighs of relief whereas Minho looked like he was about to faint from shock.
"Ga-Gally?" he stammered, eyes widened and jaw slacking.
"Hey Minho," Gally greeted, glancing between them and where the boys had jumped from, while shaking his head. "You guys are crazy."
"Am I dreaming...?" Minho mumbled to himself. "Someone pinch me- OW!" He swatted Bea's hand away, narrowing his eyes at her to which she only smiled innocently at him.
"We'll explain everything later," Thomas butted in, "Come on."
Thomas and Newt followed after Gally while Minho stared in a daze at Gally. Luckily his arm was still around Bea's shoulder, otherwise he was sure his legs would have buckled by now. Bea pulled on Minho's arm as the two began jogging.
"So are you with Harriet yet or what?" Minho asked randomly, a smirk on his face.
Bea's face flushed crimson as she began to choke on air. "Wh-what? What are you on about?"
"Oh, come one," Minho rolled his eyes as they swiftly ducked underneath a tree branch, "I've been gone for six months, if I had to stay with WCKD you must have pulled a move by now."
Bea's mouth opened and closed like a fish, giving Minho all the answers he needed to know.
"Well tell me!" Minho grinned, waiting for Bea to answer.
She sighed as they came to a stop, perching themselves behind a short wall with the others. Minho and Bea at one part while the other three boys sat behind the other side. "Um..." she cleared her throat, speaking so quietly that her voice was only audible to Minho as he was sitting right next to her. "We may have...kissed."
Minho chuckled, "Finally."
There conversation came to a halt as the sound of Newt spluttering filled their ears. Eyes widened in worry, Minho crawled over. Bea shuffled away to Gally and Thomas, giving the two a chance to talk privately.
"Is he gonna be okay?" Bea whispered anxiously to the two boys as Thomas began removing his WCKD jacket.
Her brother's lips parted, ready to answer, when Minho stalked over. "How long has he been like this?" he asked cautiously, his eyes flitting between Gally, Thomas and Bea.
"He'll be okay," Thomas diverted the question immediately, also answering Bea' question. "We just gotta get to Brenda."
"She's got the serum."
Finally removing his jacket, he made his way over to the sick boy. "Come on, let's go."
He began talking to Newt, trying to help him up as Minho gazed at his best friend. Bea's heart broke for him. Not seeing his best friend for six months, and when you see him, you see him like.....this.
"Why are you helping us Gally?" Minho sighed, turning to face the taller boy. "I put a spear through your chest."
"Yeah," Gally shrugged, "Nobody's perfect man." And with that, he patted the boy on the back, before jogging over to Thomas and Newt. Bea couldn't help but let out a snicker at the interaction, earning a playful glare from Minho.
"Come on you two. We're going!" Thomas shouted
"Coming!"
"Coming!"
---
Bea pressed her gun to her check, eyes darting in all directions like Gally next to her. They had gotten Newt up again and Minho and Thomas an arm swung around each of their shoulder, as Gally and Bea - ironically enough - were guarding them. They had gained some distance on the tunnels but they were still quite far away.
"How far are the-"
Bea's question to Gally lodged into her throat as an explosion boomed in their ears. The ground shook viciously, causing them to stumble forwards. The glanced to the right, passed the bridge they were crossing to see flames erupting from building not that far from them. The brunette girl inhaled sharply as the sound of gunfire and ashy clouds filling the air.
"I told them to take out WCKD, not the whole damn city," Gally breathed out, licking his lips anxiously.
Thomas sighed shaking his head as he quickly patted Gally on the shoulder. "Come on, let's keep moving."
Bea paused for a second, glancing to Gally whose eyes were trained on the destroyed building crumbling to the floor. She wondered what was going on in that head of his. He snapped back into reality, jogging after the other three boys with Bea right behind him.
They crossed through a few alleyways and side streets before reaching the main road which was filled with dozens of cop cars and guards. "Hey! Stay low, stay low," Gally instructed as they crouched behind a horizontal pillar.
Bea placed her gun on the floor, peering round the edge with Gally, while Thomas peered round the other side. More WCKD cars and truck had arrived, loaded with dozens of more guards.
"This wasn't part of the plan, was it?" Bea hissed to Gally.
"No shit, it wasn't!" he hissed back, rolling his eyes.
"What are they waiting for?" Minho asked breathily.
As if on cue multiple explosions occurred across the street, causing the ground to shake again and Thomas to flinch. His head whipped to the side as the sound of yelling grew louder, Lawrence's army stampeding through the street. Ready as ever, the WCKD guards began firing. Missile after missile were thrown at them while the guards shot them with their never ending amount of bullets. The streets crowded with people, the roars and the scream multiplying.
It was a war.
"Stay down!" Gally yelled, as a couple of bullets skimmed the pillar they were hiding behind. Bea slouched further down, her heart rate quickening. "Shit. We gotta go. We gotta go."
Thomas and Minho grunted, heaving Newt up again, rushing away with Bea and Gally armed with their guns behind them. As quick as they could, they hurried away, stopping to slip down an alleyway once they were knew they were further from the main violence.
Minho and Thomas placed Newt down against the wall before the brunette boy fumble for his walkie talkie frantically. "Here!" Bea yelled over the explosions, chucking him hers to save time.
"Brenda? Brenda? Brenda are you there?" he spoke into the mic.
"Thomas I'm here."
Bea flinched at the sound of a glass window smashing a mere metre away from them as another mob of people ran past.
"We're not gonna make it."
"What are you talking about."
Thomas huffed, crawling further away from the racket of noise. The two spoke back and forth before Thomas sighed, stuffing the walkie talkie into his pocket before walking back over to the group.
"They've got a berg. Brenda said to meet at the end of the tunnels," he said, already throwing one of Newt's arms round his shoulder, "Come on, let's go!"
And just like that they were off again. Bea and Gally were at the front of the group as they slipped out of the alleyway and into another one. It was safer to travel through them rather than on the main streets.
They crossed another one, almost reaching the end of it.
"Just leave me," Newt groaned heavily. Bea frowned, ready to argue when a lit up car flew in front of them, bursting into flames. Gally stuck his arm in front of Bea shielding her while the two stumbled backwards.
"Shit. Stay back guys!" Gally yelled. "Back!"
Another larger mob of people rushed passed them, weapons in hand. Bea coughed on the ashy air, crouching beside Newt with the rest of the group. Gradually, the sound of whirring grew louder and louder.
Cautiously, they looked up, a berg emerging from the dark clouds.
"That's it. that's them," Thomas called out. Immediately, he grabbed onto Newt to start moving again.
The blonde boy swatted his arm away, "Just go without me, man," he choked, "Just go-" His plea cut off as a black liquid oozed out of his mouth, dripping onto the floor. He coughed out the remains as the group stared at him with widened eyes.
He heaved heavily, turning back to face them. They now realised how serious Newt's condition was getting.
Thomas licked his lips, "Minho, you gotta run ahead. Get the serum. Get back to us as soon as you can." He paused, turning to look at the raven-haired boy. "Minho, go."
"He's right," Gally added, "I can cover." He stood up, edging towards the edge of the alleyway.
Minho turned to his best friend with a look of fear and sadness in his eyes.
"Thank-Thank you Minho," Newt managed to spluttered out.
"You just hang on," Minho breathed out, trying to reassure himself just as much as Newt, "You here me?"
He was about to get up when Bea placed a hand on his arm. His head whipped round to face the brunette girl. "Be careful, okay?" she trembled slightly. He nodded, giving her hand a slight squeeze before jogging after Gally.
She turned back to Thomas who was shaking Newt's collar, trying to get him to focus on him. "Hey-Hey, Hey! Newt, we're gonna try this okay."
The blonde boy stared at him with clouded eyes.
"Come on, we're gonna get you out. Let's get you up, okay. Let's go."
"No."
"Newt come on-"
Newt grabbed at a necklace around his neck; a brown rope with a metal cylinder at the bottom. Harshly, he tugged it off of his neck, shaking it in Thomas' face who was still trying to get him off of the ground.
"Tommy take this. You gotta take this. Take it," the boy basically screamed at Thomas, who had finally stopped his pleading.
"Please. Please, Tommy, please."
Sighing, Bea snatched it from Newt's hands before stuffing it into Thomas' back pocket. "There, he has it now," Bea said quickly and reassuringly, "Let's go now."
"Plus, you're not dying yet. We only just became friends," she chuckled, trying to lighten the deathly mood. A slither of a smile appeared on Newt's face, indicating to Bea that he had heard what she said. And with that, the two siblings hauled up the boy again, an arm around each of their shoulder's.
"Let's get you to the serum, buddy," Thomas mumbled.
The three exited the sheltered alleyway, revealing the beginning of what felt like an apocalypse. Bea stumbled to the left due to Newt's weight, the blonde boy moaning and grunting with black liquid trickling out of his mouth.
The roads were a wreck; pockets of fire splattered across the street, bullets whizzing a few inches above their heads. Gripping the flare-infected boy's waist tighter, the siblings pulled him forwards, his legs almost giving way at this point.
Bea flinched as a bomb was hurtled past them, exploding in front of them with a crash, smoke and flames immediately erupting into the air.
Shit.
Shit. Shit. Shit. Shit.
Her eyes flickered quickly to the left, spying a large hole in a glass window, that looked manageable for a human to fit through.
"In here!" she yelled to the two boys, climbing into the whole first, Newt's body dangling between the two brunettes. She gripped onto Newt's arm, preventing him from falling as Thomas climbed through the hole. Thomas spluttered, coughing to the side from the smoke he had inhaled.
Newt's body was limp, diving in and out of consciousness as Bea felt the weight of his body beginning to increase.
"Come on, Newt," she urged, "Just a little bit further."
What they had entered was an now abandoned train station, fortunately leading them straight to the tunnels.
Heaving the boy across the building, small grunts sounded from Newt's mouth.
"Just a little bit further," Thomas said encouragingly, "Stay with me Newt."
The boy's body flopped, making it incredibly hard for Bea to hold on to his body without breaking her arm.
"Newt. Newt. Ne-"
Thomas cut his pleads off as the blonde boy's body fell to the floor, Bea wincing in pain slightly, rotating her arm. The brunette boy dropped to the floor, Bea soon after, shaking Newt's body from the collars of his jacket.
Bea's heart lodged in her throat at the fact he wasn't moving. At all.
"Newt!" she shouted along with Thomas, shaking his arms. The boy leaned his head down to Newt's mouth, a slither of air luckily still being blown onto his ear.
"I get the arms you get the legs," Thomas instructed to his sister, Bea nodding almost instantly. Shuffling to the end, she grabbed Newt's legs, hauling the boy up with Newt.
Fuck. Gally and Minho need to get back with the serum. Soon.
Their heavy breaths and groans echoed in the empty building, each breath heavier and quicker than the last. Bea's muscled ached as she attempted to ignore the pain.
"Thomas?"
The sound of a female voice - not belonging to Bea - caused Thomas to drop Newt's body, a look of shock and fear plastered onto his face. Teresa. That's who the voice belonged to. Bea internally groaned at the girls' voice that was booming through the megaphones inside the building
"Can you hear me."
Well nah, your voice is blasting across all of the megaphones so he obviously isn't going to here you.
Although, Teresa's question was more like a statement, her knowing clearly he could hear her, stopping his tracks to hear exactly what she said.
"I need you to listen to me. I know you have no reason to trust me....but I need you to come back."
Like hell he is.
"Thomas, you can save Newt."
This caused Bea to frowned, almost leaping to the answer that the girl was playing on a trick on them yet again.
"There's still time for him."
That sentence rewired Bea's brain back into action. She reached down, grabbing Newt by the ankles, ready to start moving him to the end of the tunnels. But Thomas wasn't ready. He was transfixed on Teresa's voice.
"There's a reason Brenda isn't sick anymore."
Bea's stomach churned at the mention of her close friend's name.
"It's your blood."
"Do you understand? She isn't sick....because you cured her."
Bea's brain whirred at a million miles per hour, trying to comprehend how could be true. But she couldn't think of any reason why it couldn't be true.
"She doesn't have to be the only one. All you have to do is come back."
Bea would have scoffed, and say it was all part of Teresa's plan; but, as much as she hated to admit it, Teresa was possibly right.
"Then this can all finally be over. Please. Just come back to me. I know you'd do the right thi-"
Teresa's voice abruptly cut off, leaving an irritating high-pitched noise as each light in the building slowly flickered off. Bea could make out Thomas' figure as her own body was still crouched down by Newt's ankles.
Sighing, she slowly got up and made her way over to her brother. She cautiously placed a hand on his shoulder to get his attention.
"Tom," she whispered softly, "You-"
She cut herself off, both teenagers freezing at the sound of shuffling behind them. Slowly, they craned their necks to the side, eyes widening as they saw Newt staggering to his feet - his back facing them.
"Newt?"
The blonde boy gradually turned his neck around to face them; his eyes were clouded with darkness, his lips black from the liquid oozing out of his mouth.
"Ne-Newt?" Thomas repeated the boy's name.
Before Bea's lips had even opened to speak to the boy, he had leaped forwards, a roar escaping his mouth. Swiftly, the siblings darted opposite way, leaving Newt to crash into the floor. But he wasn't down for long as he quickly scrambled to his feet.
"Newt! It's me, It's me-"
Thomas' attempt at being reassuring failed, the ill boy lunged at him again. Newt caused the two to topple over, rolling around on the floor until Thomas shoved him off. Bea winced at the fight, wondering whether to but in.
Newt's head with to the side, his eyes penetrating through her skull, giving her all the answer she needed. She was going to be involved whether she liked it or not. The blonde boy groaned again, leaping at Bea, whose reflexes were slower this time, causing her to land with a thud on her back.
"Newt," she grunted, pushing the on the boy's chest so he would get off of her. He was crazy; and she couldn't believe she was thinking this, but she couldn't help but cast her mind to the woman they saw in the scorch. The amount of differences between Newt and the woman were decreasing by the second.
Bea gasped for air as Newt was ripped off of her by Thomas. She was about to thank him when he had crashed to the floor again, more of the black liquid oozing from his mouth.
"Tommy. Kill me," his voice strained. Thomas eyes widened, astounded at Newt's requested. But just like that, as if a switch went off in his head, Newt hurtled himself at Thomas again.
The brunette girl scrambled to her feet again as Newt leant over Thomas, his forearm pressing against the brunette boy's neck. She wrapped her arms around Newt's waist, tugging at him to get off.
If there was one thing Bea wished for at this moment, it was to have some muscles. All those times when she would put off going to the gym, or lied to Dr. Crawford that she had been, she just wished she had gone.
Newt's harshness decreased as his breathing became ragged and heavier. "So-Sorry. Sorry Tommy."
Thomas nodded with glossy eyes, accepting the apology, "It's okay," he breathed out, placing his arm on Newt's shoulder. Bea scrunched her face up at the intimate moment between the two boys, almost wishing she wasn't there.
Without warning, Newt grabbed onto Thomas' belt hook, flinging out the gun and placing the nozzle to his temple. "NO!" Bea screamed, whacking the gun out of his grasp before the blonde boy could do anything else.
Newt swung his body backwards, knocking his head into Bea's and his back into her chest, causing her to groan and tumble backwards. He used his freedom to harden his grip on Thomas.
Bea rubbed her forehead, grateful it wasn't a concussion as she blinked a few times. Both boys were sprawled on the flaw, Newt in front of Thomas. Newt reached into his pocket, fishing out a knife. Before Bea could tell her brother, Newt had span around, slicing the knife through the air, a mere inch away from Thomas' neck.
Newt threw his body weight onto Thomas, one arm holding him down, the other holding the knife above in. A look of terror plastered itself across Bea's face as the knife steadily sliced into her brothers shoulder. Thomas' screams filled the building echoing off of the walls.
Snapping out of her trance, Bea scrambled forwards, gripping harshly on Newt's wrist to lift the knife out of Thomas' body. Although she hadn't thought that through as once she had, Newt' swung the knife upwards, the blade cutting through the right side of her body doing so.
Fuck. Not again.
Pain coursed through her body as her grip immediately loosened from Newt's wrist. She collapsed to the floor, wrapping her arms around her torso in agony. The gash was deeper and more painful than the last; or at least that's how she felt as last time she had a concussion. Newt's groans and screams filled her ears as she attempted to get up, only failing and flopping to the floor again.
Bea inhaled. But didn't find herself exhaling.
Her temple throbbed as she attempted to turn around, her hand pressed against her fresh wound as the gnawing pain ricocheted from her head to her toes. But then the groaning and grunting stopped. She did a double take when she saw the knife; the knife that had stabbed Thomas' shoulder, the knife that had sliced open Bea's right side. The knife that was now lodged into Newt's heart.
No.
Shuffling over, tears began to prick her eyes, a few already trickling down her cheek. Thomas grasped Newt's shoulder's resting his lifeless body down on the ground. The guns and explosions in the city were a mere background noise as the siblings mourned the boy in front of them.
No. No. No. No. No.
Bea felt numb - apart from the fact that blood was pouring out of her body at the speed of light. Her ragged breathing slowed down as Thomas gripped onto Newt's collars, his wet tears falling upon them.
Quick footsteps echoed inside the tunnel and out of her peripheral vision, Bea could spot Brenda, her hair blown in different directions from the wind. Beside Bea, Thomas staggered to his feet as his sister turned to face Newt once again.
She couldn't bare to glance at her brother; she knew she wouldn't be able to bare the heartbroken look on his face, knowing there was nothing she could do about it. Thomas' sharp footsteps echoed as he left the tunnel, leaving the two brunette girls and Newt.
That's when Bea let out a sob.
Letting out a cry, she leaned forwards, gripping onto Newt's arms, her forehead leant against his shoulder. Getting the serum 'soon' changed into 'sooner' into 'not soon enough'. Her muffled sobs echoed as her tears were soaked up by the shouldered padding on his jacket.
Ironic.
Ironic how here he was...dead...in the place he hated the most, in the clothes of the people he hated the most and the knife in his chest also owned by those same people. By WCKD.
Although the tears didn't stop, her sobs did as the sound of multiple footsteps bounced off of the walls. Belonging to Minho, Newt and Fry. Tilting her head to the side, Bea's eyes flashed in pain at what was before her.
She was wrong about before.
Seeing Minho see his best friend this ill was heartbreaking, but witnessing Minho see his best friend dead, broke her heart beyond repair.
