Chapter 17
~~~Dawn's problem~~~
Serena's POV
A sudden booming sound caused both of us to jump. The sound was low and loud as if a heavy object fell down on the floor. Or someone.
Dawn.
"What was that?!" I exclaimed as I placed my cup of tea on the counter, got down from my seat and rushed upstairs.
Going up I see a body laying on the floor. Dawn's body. My eyes widened.
"DAWN!" I screamed as I hurried over to her. I exam her face looking over to see a small blood trickle down her forehead. I panic. "WHITE! CALL THE AMBULANCE, NOW!"
Dawn, hold on, please.
As I lift her head on my lap and pull her head back. I see White casually walking upstairs. What?!
"WHITE, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!" I shouted frustrated that she isn't doing something, just looking at me with a blank expression. "DAWN, NEEDS HELP NOW!"
White didn't say anything and just walked towards her bag lying on the table in front of the mirror. I look down, seeing Dawn's face is a little pale.
"WHITE!" I screamed. "WHAT ARE YOU DOI-"
"Found it" White interrupted, holding a needle on her hand. Huh? She turned towards me. "Serena, you've to help me get Dawn on a bed."
"But-"
"Don't worry about Dawn. I know what I'm doing. Trust me." White exclaimed seriously.
I nodded hesitantly. White walked towards us as I lifted Dawn's head from my lap and let her sit straight up. Both me and White put one of Dawn's arms around our shoulders. On the count of three, we lifted her up and brought her up to Dawn and White's room. Stepping in, we headed towards Dawn's bed. Which is still messy, the blanket laying half on the ground, clothes lying next to the bed. I didn't know Dawn is this messy. Ignoring that, White let Dawn go giving all the weight of Dawn to me.
"Can you lay her down?" White questions. I nodded and lay Dawn down on her back carefully. I stood up straight to see White kneeling down, pulling off the safety cap of the needle.
"White, what are you going to do with that?" I asked pointing towards the needle. White looked up following my finger. She looked up.
"Inject her." She said making a face that said 'What else am I supposed to do with it'.
"I know that but what's in it?" I asked as she put the needle in Dawn's brachial artery.
"Some vitamins and minerals," White explained. Vitamins and minerals? "I'm going down and make her some breakfast," She said as she got up from the ground.
"White," I said as she stopped in her tracks. "What's up with Dawn?" I asked as I looked down towards Dawn's peacefully sleeping body.
White turned towards me a broken look on her face." I can't tell you, I promised Dawn. She is the one that has to tell you. I'm sorry." She sighed.
"Serena, can you come help me prepare?" I nodded in response.
And walked towards her but not before glancing back.
Oh, What happened to you, Dawn?
~~~~~~~~~~~~
'Why doesn't Dawn eat? She is obviously skinny, her ribs are even showing. How could she not be hungry? Is she starving herself? Might that be the reason she passed out? It sounds logical. But I doubt the fact that she thinks she's fat, so why is she doing this too herself? I knew something was up. Why didn't I do some-
"SERENA, THE EGGS!" White yelled as I snapped out of my thoughts I looked down to see the eggs burning. I quickly turned out the gas and went towards the sink and turned on the water. I sighed as the water damp hit my face. I turned the crane down and turned towards White, who's tapping her foot and her hands on her hips, one of them holding a knife where she was cutting the salad with. I was busy with my thoughts that I forgot that I was baking eggs for Dawn. Well, soaked, burned eggs now.
"Serena," White started as she pointed the knife towards me with the tip aimed at me."What were you thinking?" She questioned as she walked towards me still holding the knife in the same position. I slowly backed away as she came closer, soon she was standing in front of me the knife terrifyingly close towards my face.
"You could burn the whole house down. If I didn't warn you." White glared at me.
"Okay, I'm sorry, White. It was an accident, I wasn't paying full attention to it" I started as I pulled my hands up in defense."But can you please lower your knife it's too close to my face right now." I gulped.
White sweatdropped as she lowered her knife at rubbed the back of her neck.
"Whoops, sorry, Serena" White apologized as I sweatdropped. 'Really, White?'. White looked at me with a questionable look."What were you thinking about?" She questioned.
I looked down and shuffled a bit with my foot."Dawn" I mumbled.
A sudden weight dropped on my shoulder causing me to look up. White showed a sympathetic smile as she patted my shoulder.
"Don't worry, Serena. Dawn is okay." White said.
"I can't help it." I frowned."Dawn is my friend and I can't help but worry about her. It's even worse that I don't know what's wrong with her." I sighed and looked down.
White looked down." I promised.."
"Not to tell anyone. I know," I finished." I just feel helpless."
"You're helping me now aren't you?" White questioned. I nodded."Also, give Dawn her time she will tell you eventually."
"Okay," I mumbled.
"I'll bake Dawn some eggs" White said as she picked up another pan."Can you check up on Dawn?"
I nodded and slumped my way out of the kitchen, going through the hallway eventually at the beginning of the stairs, I looked up. Why is it so high? I groaned. Finally, after 24 hours I was at the end, I sighed. I walked towards Dawn's and White's room, opening the door seeing Dawn sleeping there her legs and arms spread loosely around the bed, having just the half of the blanket around her. I walked towards the bed, bending over, grabbing the edge of the blanket putting it till her shoulders before letting go. I might as well grab her some water. I stood up straight and walked out, closing the door behind me.
Dawn's POV
I slowly opened my eyes, shuffling till I lay on my back, I groaned. Damn, my head hurts bad. I felt my forehead only to touch something dry, I pulled my hand back and looked at it. Huh? Blood? Oh no, I fainted again. I sighed. White is going to give me a full-on speech and Serena must be worried, she is going to give numerous questions. Should I tell her though, or did she already found out? Nah, White promised me, she wouldn't tell. But that means I've to explain it to her. I sighed and turned to my side. At that moment the door opened, coming out is Serena with a glass of water in her hand. I sit up straight. Speak of the devil. She looked up.
"Oh, you're already up, I see," Serena said as she walked towards me handing the glass to me, which I gratefully accepted.
"Thanks" I exclaimed as I sipped the cold water, feeling it going down my throat giving me a shiver and then relax.
"Dawn," Serena said which causes me to look up."Can I ask you something?" She asked as she played with her fingers.
I nodded in response. Please, don't ask, please.
"What happened to you?" She mumbled.
"It's a long story,"I sighed.
"I've got the time," Serena said."You don't have to tell, I'm not trying to push y-"
"No, you deserve an explanation," I interrupted.
"Daw-"
"It's okay," I exclaimed.
I took a deep breath. "I don't come from a lovely family like other people,"I started."I have one older sister and a mother. My dad left us after I was born. So I don't know much of him. She didn't mind being a single mom. She provided us with everything, education, food etc. It was going well, till I was going to high school, my sister was already a Sophomore and I a Freshman. You know that freshman children will be always picked on because they are the youngest. "
Serena nodded slowly, I think she already knows what's next.
"Unfortunately, I was one of them. I was being bullied every day I went to school. Honestly, I didn't mind much of it. I thought that eventually, it will be over once I'm not a Freshman anymore, you know? But the year after my sister had stayed in, because of her grades. I thought it will be nice to be in the same class as my sister, walking to school, helping each other out and etc. but it wasn't." I continued."First, it started with ignoring me, then with playful teasing, but it became worse. She started hanging out with other children, older ones. One day she just came up to me and pushed me down, she started yelling things at me. About how ugly, fat, weak and worthless I'm. About how it was my fault dad left us." I mumbled the last part out.
I looked over at Serena who's looking at me in disbelieve.
"Yeah, I didn't believe it either. But it wasn't only that, she and those other kids began beating me up every day. I was going home and my mother always ask me what happened? And I couldn't tell her that her first child is bullying her younger daughter. Even at school, it wasn't enough to torture me. At home, every time mom wasn't there or was looking away. She would hurt me make fun of me. Saying things about my appearance."I snobbed. "And eventually, I believed her. I'm ugly, I'm fat, I'm weak, I'm worthless" I clenched the blanket and let the tears flow down my face one by one.
"I started eating less, hiding my body underneath clothes, I isolate myself from others. Maybe then it was enough, but it never was." I snobbed.
"After our mom died, she changed and I became worse. She always came late home after a party, sometimes drunk. She would yell at me, hit, kick or beat me. One time she didn't come home, I worried about her, so I went to the nearby bar to look if she is there. But I didn't realize it was only for men. I went in only seeing men watching me going in, it creeped me out. I went to the bartender asking if he saw my sister. He said only that you're in the wrong place, little girl. And I was, I walked out only to be followed by a group of drunken men, I knew they were there so when I was around the corner I ran for my life when they noticed they chased after me. I was so tired, my legs hurt. And they were coming closer, I went around another corner only to be pulled in an alley. I screamed, but only to be muffled by the man's hand. He told me to be quiet so I did. I was terrified for my life. Imagining it was one of them.
"As I stood there, the drunken men passed by, running away from us. When that happened he let go. I turned around to see a dark black haired man, almost purple, with gorgeous dark brown eyes. He asked me if I was okay. Saying if those men did something to me. I responded. Every question. He asked me if I needed a ride home. Apparently, I ran almost 8 miles, my legs were killing me. I accepted. He brought me home and I thanked him. My sister was already home, but was sleeping on the couch."
"I saw him, after that once more in a café, when I was working for a project, He sat next to me and offered me a cup of tea. I introduced myself and him too. His name is Paul. From there on we became best friends and soon girlfriend and boyfriend. He was the best. I was beginning to eat more and feel better about myself. I've never felt any comfort, I was born and grown up without any. And Paul was like my own secret guilty pleasure, cause the most comfortable place I've found in the world was being in his arms. He was my light, my knight in shining armor," I sighed dreamily as I heard Serena giggle. But I frowned.
"But my sister found out about it and she went crazy saying that I can't be with him. I was furious and screamed back at her. She hit me in the eye and told me that nobody deserves a worthless piece of **** and that I must break up with him. I didn't want to, but she threatened me that she would hurt him. That was when I broke down, I cried all night and the next morning, I had to break up with him. I told him that I needed space and ran away."
"I went back in my depressed old self. You know, my sister is right. I'm ugly, I'm fat, I'm weak, I'm worthless." I cried."Nobody will love me till I'm perfect for them, but I'll never be. And you know what my biggest fear is that eventually, everyone will see me the way I see myself. "
I cried as hold my pillow and let the tears sink into it.
I'm nothing. I'm just a waste of space.
