Chapter 68 : I Love You
Three days passed, and Gage went to the hospital to see his Juliet. It was the day he had been waiting for. However, he was excited, yet nervous. He didn't know what to expect after how he treated Oddey these past weeks.
He got to the confinement room, but Oddey was not there. Even the guards that were secured by the hall.
Trying not to worry and thought the worst that could happen, a nurse passed by, so he approached her. "Excuse me, where's the patient staying in that room?" he asked. "Her name is Odette Empirio. I'm Gage Munro, I'm a friend."
"Oh, she must be on the rooftop right now," the nurse answered after looking at her watch.
"Rooftop? Why is she there?"
"Yes, you see, she teaches a couple of sick kids there to draw around two o'clock just for an hour of the day to make herself busy."
"Really?" The Romeo was impressed to hear that and also relieved to know that Oddey was not in her room not because she was in danger. "So can I go up there?"
"Sure, I'll go with you. I have to take a patient there anyway," the nurse replied.
"Okay, thanks."
"No problem."
Later, when Gage arrived at the doorway to the rooftop with a nurse and a little girl, who was also a patient. He was excited, but nervous before seeing his Juliet. Especially, when her voice could be heard that gave him the courage to want to see her.
At first, the young man peeked from the side and saw Oddey sitting on a bench with a little girl, showing her how to sketch. She wore an off-white hospital gown with a pink sweater since it was windy up there.
Watching her teach made him see that Oddey was really the Juliet he fell in love with. Gage remembered that she always wanted to do that, and seeing it with his own eyes, also made him see that she was nothing, but compassionate.
"Aren't you going to go out there?" the nurse asked him all of a sudden because the Romeo was leering for several second.
Gage was hesitant at first, until he glanced over to the little girl, and then, at her small drawing book she brought. That was when he had an idea in mind, so he bent to the kid's level with a friendly face. "I'm gonna need you help," he said.
----
Outside, Oddey noticed the other little girl coming in with another nurse that Gage talked to minutes ago. "Hi! Ella," she greeted the kid. "How are you today? I'm just showing Lizelle how to draw a butterfly."
"A boy wants me to give this to you," Ella said in her sweet, small voice as she held out the paper flower.
Juliet was stumped and took it from her hand. "A boy? What boy?"
"That boy." The child pointed with her finger.
Oddey looked up and was dumbstruck to see her ex standing by the doorway. "Gage?" she gasped
The Romeo walked up to her, with a gentle smile on his face. "Hi, Oddey."
"Is he your boyfriend?" the other little girl, Lizelle, asked in an eager tone, making the former young couple in an awkward position. Oddey just kept looking away, feeling on edge, while Gage had his eyes on her.
"If he is, he doesn't look so bad. I mean... Uhm... Ella, Lizelle, I think it's time for your naps," the nurses said to them, knowing that the older kids needed privacy. So they took Ella and pushed Lizelle's wheelchair back inside.
"I... feel tired. I think I need a nap too," Oddey told the nurse because she was not ready to face her ex.
"No, you're good. Come on, girls, let's go." The nurses quickly took the girls back inside to their rooms.
Gage gloated, then glanced to his Juliet, who was very on edge to be left alone with him. "I uhm... Thanks, for... the paper flower," she stuttered.
"Yeah, of course." The guy sat next to her but kept a little distance. "So how are you doing?"
"I'm still having a hard time walking, and my right side hurts at times."
Seeing what his father did to her in person, Gage could not help but feel more resentment towards him. "I'm sorry."
"Why are you sorry? It's not like you did this to me," Oddey responded coldly.
"I guess you know who did this to you."
"Are you here to tell me that it was not him? Because I swear I saw his face before he did this to me."
"No, I'm not here to defend my dad."
The Juliet put her head down, staring at the paper flower in her hands, avoiding his gaze. "I thought I'd never see you again after... everything that happened."
"I know, me too," Gage replied softly, then reached to hold her hand.
However, Oddey decided to pull away. "So why are you here?" she questioned.
"Your mom told me that you woke up from the coma." He noticed that she was avoiding eye contact from him. "And, I wanted to see you and talk to you."
"I appreciate you... coming here, but I really want to rest, so if you can..." Oddey was about to stand up that the paper flower fell from her lap.
However, the Romeo took her hand to stop her. "Oddey, wait. Please, hear me out first. I get that you're mad at me..."
"I'm not mad. I'm just... really tired."
"I should've known," Gage said quickly so that Oddey would listen to what he had to say. "I should've known that my dad... I thought I knew him. I never thought he could do this."
Oddey could see his sincerity but remained distant. "What's done is done, Gage. I'm sorry that you have to find out this way."
"As much as it hurts me to see the truth, it hurts me more that I nearly lost you. I also hate myself that I hurt you because I believed in his lies."
"I lied too, Gage."
"And I get why you have to lie."
"It's still not right," Oddey said.
"What's not right is what my dad did to you. When I saw you in the drive-in, I was out of my mind scared," Gage explained. "I thought I'd lost you forever, but now that you're here, I'm hoping that we can make things right between us. Maybe not right away, but..."
The Juliet began feeling emotional, seeing Gage's pleading eyes staring at her. "After everything that happened, you'd still want to be with me?"
The Romeo nodded. "I do, because I know what's in your heart." Gage held her hands. "I don't want to throw away what we had because of our family's past. Especially because of my dad's lies."
The nurses were back and began watching the young ex-couple from the glass window on the door, like they were some live romance play. They were also finding their moments so deep and emotional.
Oddey was touched by his words that she started bawling hard, and the guilt from her actions overwhelmed her again. "I'm so sorry. I should've been honest with you from the start," she cried. "Maybe it wouldn't have gotten this bad..."
Gage wiped her tears with his hands. "Hey, it's okay, there's nothing for you to be sorry for," he said softly.
"To be honest, these past weeks have been hell for me."
"I know what you mean. You know, everything was so great until our Dads were in the way. It nearly destroyed us."
"It did destroy us," the Juliet added. "Not only did they make us break apart, but they also made us go against each other. I didn't want that."
"Me too, but now nothing can destroy our relationship anymore. That I swear," Gage told her. "I don't want to distance myself from you no matter what. We love each other. If our parents have a problem with it, then that's their issue."
"You're right, our parents has no say on our relationship."
Gage felt elated, hearing that last part, then held her cheeks. "So, does this mean we're okay now?" he asked. "We can be together again? You and me?"
However, the Juliet's expression changed and pulled away from him. "No..."
"No?" the Romeo choked, feeling dismayed from her response.
"No... It's what you think. I..." Oddey took a deep breath. "I was hoping this day would come that we'll be okay and we're together again in a heartbeat, but so much had happened. Right now, I just... I just don't if we're right for each other."
"What are you saying?" Gage asked, feeling hurt at first. "You don't want to..."
"No, it's not that. We hurt each other even though we are just victims from our family's war these past months. I'm sorry, my heart hurts so much right now that I'm not ready to get back together just yet," the Juliey added tearfully. "Don't get me wrong, I still love you, but I need time to heal first. I'm not sure how long, but I just have to do this for myself to recover from this pain. And also, it'll be good for you too."
It was not have been response he wanted, yet Gage put on a gentle smile. "I understand, and don't worry, I'm not going anywhere no matter how long it will take for you to heal."
"Thank you, Gage. I'm not going anywhere either," Oddey replied. "Just because we're not in a relationship that doesn't mean we can't be friends, right?"
"Right." The Romeo picked up the paper flower to gave it to her. "Can I at least tell you that I missed you?"
"I missed you, too."
Afterward, they hugged each other once again, missing each other's warmth.
"Aaawww!!" The nurses reacted accidentally out loud from their reconciliation.
Gage and Oddey were startled that they turned to the door to the small window and caught them, but they quickly ran off anyway. The two just laughed it off rightafter.
Later, they went back inside Oddey had to use a wheelchair for the time being. Although, she had Gage to help push her around anywhere she needed to go.
They were talking and laughing along the way. Even though, they did not officially get back together, they still love just having each other around. "The doctor said I still have to stay here for another week or so," Oddey said to her boyfriend. "I wish I could get better faster. I miss being in school, my bestie, Felix, and all the people in the theatre club."
"Believe me, they miss you too," Gage replied.
"So how are things in the theatre club anyway? Everything is set for the play?"
"Yup, we've been doing dress rehearsal after dress rehearsal after dress rehearsal. Yeah, it's a drag."
"Just hang in there a little bit more," the girl giggled.
"I know. I know," the Romeo exasperated.
"As for me, I can't wait to get out of here. Good thing I have those two girls to keep me busy."
They got to Oddey's confinement room, and her Romeo sweetly carried her on his threshold, then placed her gently on her bed. "There you go," Gage said.
"Thank you." Oddey said.
After that, Gage fluffed her pillows. "Comfy?" he asked.
"Yes, but you don't have to do that."
"I know, but friends still help each other out, so let me know if you need anything."
"Well, I am kinda hungry," Oddey said.
"Same. I'm craving for a spicy cup of noodle," Gage suggested.
"You know what, I'm craving for that too."
"Alright, I'll go get it in the cafeteria on the second floor."
"Oh, wait, since you're paying for now. Remind me to pay you back once I get better, " Oddey told him.
Gage laughed it off. "I will remember that. Oh! I might have to ask for an interest if you're a day late with your payment" he replied.
"Haha very funny."
"Or perhaps a kiss."
"Don't push it," the Juliet giggled. "Just buy the cup noodle."
The Romeo grinned. "Okay, I'll be back," he said.
Once Gage, got out the room. Unknown to him, Adrian was there by the corridor, wearing his disguise, ready to for his attempt for another revenge.
