Chapter 65 : Wide Awake
Gage arrived in the hospital, and went straight to the elevator to get to the floor where Oddey's room was. Once he was there, he immediately saw Eva standing by the corridor.
"Ms. Hermosa!" the young man called out, then went to her.
"Gage, good thing you're here," Eva sighed in relief.
"What happened to her? Is she okay?"
"For now, yes."
The Romeo looked confuse after hearing that. "What do you mean? Did something happen?" he asked.
"Don't react," Eva told him. "Odette had a seizure."
Naturally, Gage couldn't help feel on edge. "Seizure..." he gulped.
"That's why I asked you here. You need to speak to her. Convince her to keep fighting. Give her a reason to stay."
Gage nodded. "I will. But wait, what about Mr. Magnum? Is he here?"
"Yes, but don't worry about him. Trust me. Now, come on."
Once they got there, the Romeo could not believe that he was finally allowed to see her. "Oh, wow!" he muttered. Though when reached to the doorknob, he became hesitant that he pulled away.
The woman was puzzled seeing him that way. "What's wrong? Don't you want to get inside?" she asked him.
"I do, but what if she doesn't want me in there?"
"Of course, she does, Sweetie. What are you saying?"
"I was... After I found out the truth about her, I got mad and let's just say I sort didn't treat her nicely," Gage answered. Standing there, seeing his Juliet lying on the hospital bed in such a condition, he remembered their last conversation with each other. "What if she doesn't want me in there?"
"Believe me, she does. Okay, yes, she was upset these days before this happened, but not because of you or what you said. She was upset that you two have to clash because of your families," Eva clarified.
"We wouldn't have to be," the young man responded.
"This time, no one is stopping you guys now to see each other. Now, go. She's waiting for you."
The Romeo took a deep breath to prepare himself, then entered the ICU. Inside, he instantly saw Oddey still in a coma with a machine helping her to keep her alive. It was not easy looking at her that way. He pulled a chair so he could sit next to her bedside and sat on it.
"Uhm... Hey, I hope you don't mind that I'm here with you." Gage started talking to his Juliet. "You know, a lot of people have been asking about you. Especially Rita and Felix. They miss you. Believe it or not, so do I."
Gage gently stroked her cheek, which made him teary-eyed. "You're near, but still so far. If it weren't for my Dad, you wouldn't be here like this." Teardrops fell on her arm.
"I'm so sorry, I understand everything now. Why you have to keep secrets from me. I wish I knew about it sooner. I wouldn't have pushed you away, I could've protected you from my own Dad."
After that, he took Oddey's hand and held it. "But I'm here now, and this time, I promise that I am not going anywhere. So please, fight. Think of all the people who want you to stay, like your Dad, your Mom, Rita, Felix, and me. Do it for us. No other reason, but us. If you stay, I promise to make it right with you and I will never let anything come between us ever again."
Out of the blue, the Juliet's hand tightened his that he instantly felt it. The hold was a bit firm, yet quick, made him jolt away from the grip.
Gage was stunned to have felt that two seconds of movement from her, then shifted to look at her face, thinking her eyes were going to open. Unfortunately, it did not. Oddey was still in a deep sleep. "Did you just...?" he beamed. "You can hear me?" It gave him hope that his Juliet could be listening to him.
A moment passed, the doctor was called after the young man told them what happened when he spoke to Oddey, and then he turned to them with a small grin in his face. "It seems she's in the road to recover," he informed.
The young man and Oddey's mother were over the moon to hear good news for once. "Oh, my Lord, that's wonderful," Eva expressed her joy. "So when can we expect her to wake up?"
"Not sure yet. Probably soon. We do see that there are improvements in her condition."
"That's really, really good to hear, Doc. Thank you."
"No problem. Excuse me." The doctor left the room with the nurses.
Eva darted to Gage as they smiled at each other. "Did you hear that? She's going to be okay," she chimed, then gave him a bear hug for it. "Thank you too, Gage. I had a feeling you would be the key for her recovery."
Gage did not say anything because he was just as happy, perhap even more, knowing that there was a chance that his Juliet would live again. After a bit of celebration, he had to go leave for school the next morning. However, before heading out, he asked, "By the way, where's Mr. Magnum? Did you tell him the good news? He should be here."
"He... is here," the woman admitted reluctantly.
"Oh! Does he know that I'm here?"
"Yes," Eva answered. "The truth is, he asked me to call you to come here after the seizure happened."
The guy was taken aback by that. "Really? Does that mean he's okay about me... and Oddey?"
"To be honest, Gage, Leon is fine with your relationship with Odette. Perhaps, not wholeheartedly. He was just furious at your father, and maybe also your mother, at what they did to him."
"I get it. Where is he?"
"He's in the chapel. Why?"
"I want to talk to him," Gage answered. "You know, to thank him for letting me see Oddey."
"Uhm... Honey, you don't have to do that," Eva replied, even cringed right after. "Like I said, not wholeheartedly yet."
"That doesn't mean I can't thank him."
"Alright, fine. Do you want me to go with you?"
"No, that's okay, I'm good," Gage said.
The hospital has a small chapel for patient's loved ones to pray for them. However, Leon's reason was partly that, and something else. He just sat there quietly on the front row by himself facing the huge crucifix, with his eyes close, praying for his daughter.
He knew that the architect student was in the hospital since he was the one who finally allowed him to see Oddey, though he had no idea about the good news of his daughter's condition just yet.
Unknown to him, the Romeo went inside, trying not to make a sound, and managed to sit on the second row from where Leon was sitting. "Ahem... Mr. Magnum?" he called out to him with a soft tone of voice. Oddey's father became startled that the young man yet kept facing front since he was actually there to avoid him. Though, Gage decided to keep talking anyway. "I just got out from Oddey's room. She's going to be okay. The doctor said that she'll wake up very soon."
As stoic as he was on the outside, the man was overjoyed to hear that, so he just smiled and nodded subtly. Eva watched from the door way, and heard every word.
"Thank you for letting me see her. It really means a lot to me. I know that must not have been an easy decision," Gage added. Leon's smile was getting smaller, and his head was down. "Uhm... Listen, I get it now. I get why you had to stop me from being with Oddey and why you don't like me. All the things that my parents did, I couldn't believe that they could do that. But I want you to know that I could never hurt your daughter. I love her."
Tears rolled down the CEO's cheeks because he felt the sincerity in the young man's voice. Though, he had no response after that. "Anyway, I will leave you alone now," the Romeo said to him, then got up from the seat and was about to head out.
"Thank you... for coming," Leon said suddenly, even turning his head slightly to the side. Gage and Eva did not expect that as they exchanged glanced towards one another. "Come again as much as you like."
The architect student smirked. "I will," he replied, then continued walking away with the feeling of content.

Once Gage left, Leon went back to the ICU to check on his daughter as he sat on the chair next to the bedside, and then his fiance came in with a grin in her face. "I'm glad you're doing better, Mochipie," he said to her. "I'm so sorry that I didn't consider it earlier. You know how your old man is. I just want you safe, that's all."
"It's pretty obvious. Someone is finally softening up with their daughter's boyfriend," she teased.
"Don't push it," the man groaned jokingly. "But I admit, he is a good kid, not like his father."
"Yes, he is a good kid. You know, he told me that he felt that Odette touched his hand." Eva informed him.
"Is that so?"
"I'm just saying that you did the right thing to allow him to be here."
"I know, and it's not easy too," Leon sighed.
"You know what they say. It's never easy to do the right thing. Even if it means accepting your enemy's son," his fiance replied.
"Accepting my enemy's son for my daughter. It's not easy, but that doesn't it's not possible."
"Baby steps. Either way, I'm a proud fiance for you to realize that, and I know Odette feels the same way to have a father who finally opened his heart."
Leon just glanced over to his daughter and fluffed her pillow. "I'm just happy that Odette will be well again."
The next morning, when the couple were asleep. Eva lay down on the couch, and the father, by sitting and resting their heads on the the girl's hospital bedside. Suddenly, Oddey's hand began to move slightly.
At first, it was a finger on her right hand. Then, a second after, the whole hand was able to articulate up and down movement. Moreover, her head motioned side-to-side a bit.
Leon began waking up, stretching his arms, and his neck. Afterward, he rubbed his eyes with his hand, and that was when he noticed the little movements on his daughter's hands. Stunned, he looked over to Oddey's face, watching its eyelids trying to open from the days long of deep sleep.
"Odette?" The man gasped.
The girl's eyes were wide open, looking straight up the ceiling, and started blinking, then looked around like wondering where she was.
Eva woke up next, then saw her fiance got up looking towards his daughter, "Leon, what's going on?" she yawned.
Leon shifted to the woman. "She's awake!"
"She is!?" Already alert from that, Eva stood up from the couch, then dashed to the hospital bed, and was baffled to see Oddey's eyes were finally open.
"Mo... om? Da... Dad?" Oddey uttered in a raspy tone, and she seemed confused too. "Where am I?"
"Odette, you're in the hospital. Oh! my God, you're awake."
"I'll go get the doctor!" The father rushed out the room.
Not long, the doctors and nurse came in to check on their young patient. A miracle happened seeing their beloved daughter finally coming out from the coma after a near-death shooting.
