Chapter 32 : Star-Crossed Kiss
Hours later, it was a late in the night, Gage was coming out from a convenience store right outside the school to buy snacks, then he noticed that Oddey and Jerry, minus Rita and Felix He hid behind a broad pole to spy on them a bit.
They were walking together in the campus garden like how he saw them were earlier in the morning, like they were enjoying each other's company again. In his mind, the double date went well, and why wouldn't it be since this guy didn't bring a plus one. After that, he watched them hug each other, and then they separated. Oddey went inside through the gate while her date walked back to his car.
Seeing how close they looked at one another, at least they did not have one of those goodnight kiss yet Gage felt threatened by this handsome, yet friendly jock.
When Jerry drove off, the Romeo decided to get back inside the campus. He saw Oddey again walking, but not to the girls' dorms, so he decided to follow her.
Most rooms in the school were closed late at night, yet there were some with the lights were still for students studying until three in the morning, work on a project, having a private meetings, and there was this dance group that wanted to practice their steps.
Though apparently, Oddey was heading to the auditorium. Gage watched her go inside the elevator, then waited for the next one to arrive to see what she was up to. "What is she doing?" he whispered to himself.
The Juliet arrived at the theatre club rehearsal place and went up to the stage to see the fixed balcony set. At the same time, she did not know that Gage stood by the door, looking all confused as to why she was there right after being in the silent movie convention. She was still wearing the ruffled red dress, and her makeup was still intact.
Oddey went at the back of the backdrop and climbed to the stairs to get to Juliet's bedroom set that was in the middle of a working progress. Then, he went straight to the wide window way that was the balcony. She wanted to take a look at it and could see there was no way that it would cause another mishap.
While just being there, she imagined being Juliet while still wearing a beautiful dress. "O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou, Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse the name," She recited, and Gage heard her. "What's in a name? that which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. So Romeo would, were he not Romeo called, retain that dear perfection which he owes without that title. Romeo, doff thy name, and for that name which is no part of thee take all myself."
"Shall I hear more or shall I speak of this?" The playing the male lead spoke.
Oddey was startled that she quickly turned around and was surprised to see her crush down there with this cute grin. "Gage," she gasped.
"But, soft! what light through yonder window breaks? It is the east, and Juliet is the sun. Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon, who is already sick and pale with grief, that thou her maid art far more fair than she," he added.
The young artist blushed, "How long were you standing there?" she questioned him.
"Not long, I saw you from the campus garden, and... well. What are you doing on the balcony?"
"Uhm... I'm just checking to see if it's safe." Oddey pretended to observe the conditions by knocking a few boards. "And, it is."
"So uhm... how was the silent movie thing?"
"Hmm... quiet," Oddey joked, then the two laughed it off. "But, I had fun."
"Cool. By the way, where's Felix and Rita?" he asked.
"Well, Felix have a suprise dinner plan with her." She leaned her head with her hand on the sill.
"Really?" That was news to Gage. "I didn't even know he came up with that."
"Yeah, me too. I think it's sweet and romantic of him."
"It is. So... How'd it go with... you and Jerry?"
Oddey was a bit stunned that he would ask that. "Me and Jerry?" she uttered. "He's okay, and I did have a great time with him too. But I think he would rather be with Haley than me."
Gage's eyes widened. "Haley? Haley Kin? Ahem..." Then tried to act composed. "Why'd you say that?"
"I heard rumors. It could be true."
"I hope it's true," the Romeo muttered.
"Ahem... So are you feeling okay now?" Oddey asked him since his demeanor towards her earlier was so distant.
"Hm...?"
"You seem bummed back in rehearsal time," She added. Gage became nervous that he looked down and scratched the back of his neck. "Is there something you want to talk about? Is there something wrong."
"I thought there was, but not anymore. Sorry, I didn't mean to take it out on you."
"It's okay, I get it," Oddey assured him. "You know that you can tell me anything. Isn't that why we're friends?"
"Yeah," Gage said softly with a warm smile on his face. Suddenly, he had a plan in mind right there and then. "Uhm... do you want to test out the balcony scene? I just want to be prepared."
The art student lifted a brow from his request, yet did not think much of it. "Sure, why not?"
"Great."
Oddey went into character, as she took her phone out since she had the lines there. "Okay, I'm ready."
"Go for it," He told her.
"O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou, Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse the name," She recited again. "What's in a name that which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet?"
"Shall I hear more or shall I speak of this?"
Some time passed of exchanging lines to each other. Gage got to the part where he had to climb to the chambers. "Careful going up," Oddey told him.
"Don't worry, I got this." He reassured her, as he gotten nearer to the balcony. Once he got there, then sat on the sill.
Oddey sat with him, then continued with their lines. She read it first and looked at him. "Tis almost morning; I would have thee gone, and yet no further than a wanton's bird. Who lets it hop a little from her hand. Like a poor prisoner in his twisted gyves, and with a silk thread plucks it back again, so loving-jealous of his liberty."
"I would I were thy bird." Suddenly, the atmosphere seemed to change. There was an attraction as Gage got closer to her.
"Sweet, so would I, yet I should kill thee with much cherishing. Good night, good night! parting is such sweet sorrow that I shall say good night till it be morrow." The girl in the red dress just stood where she felt that she was in a trance. The Romeo held her pink blushed cheeks, then pulled in and brushed his lips against hers.
Oddey was shocked that she was locking lips with none other than her Romeo. Eventually, her body relaxed and her eyes were closed as she went into the motion.
It was like they were in a dream. A dream that finally came true, and a beautiful reality for the both of them, feeling the heat from one another's lips.
Time just stops for the both of them kissing inside the auditorium by using the balcony set just like in the star-crossed lovers did in their story before parting. Once they were done from what felt like two minutes of heaven, the two just stared at each other for a while to take it all in.
The Juliet pulled away thinking that this could not be real since she was helping him rehearse. "Wow, great kiss acting there," she remarked.
"It's not an act," Gage revealed to her with a smirk.
Flustered, Oddey feel her heart beating fast that it was not staged. It was not the balcony scene. It was really reality.
The two just looked at each other in the eyes and went for another non-acting, passionate kiss.
Later, Gage drove her to a spot outside of CarmU very late at night, at a park with a big hill with the view of the city with their lights. He opened the door for her and walked together by the brick paving to look at the scenery,
"Beautiful, isn't it?" he said to her with this excitement in his tone however, Gage noticed that Oddey had been quiet and just stared at the city lights. "Don't you like it?"
Oddey turned to him. "No, it's not that, I do..."
"Is it me? You haven't said anything after we... we kissed." The Romeo became worried towards her reaction to all that.
"I'm sorry, it's just... I'm trying to process everything, I still can't believe it."
"No, I'm sorry that it seems like I ambushed you with that kiss earlier," He apologized.
"It's okay... I'm not mad. Just surprised that's all," Oddey replied to him.
Gage took her hand, "I understand," he assured her. "These past weeks, I find myself wanting to see you, talk to you, and be with you all the time."
"You do?" She choked that this whole time, her crush felt the same way as her, and she had no clue whatsoever. Love truly blinds you even when it was right in front of you.
"I have this strong feeling inside, and I can't contain it anymore. I thought I was too late when you agreed to go on a double date with Jerry. That's why I was... upset earlier because I couldn't stand the thought of you being with him."
"I... I don't know what to say," the girl stammered, feeling very flustered and overwhelmed at what was happening.
Gage thought that the feeling was not mutual, so he just put on a brave face. "It's okay, I get it."
"No, I do feel the same way," she blurted.
"You do?" he gasped.
Oddey nodded her head. "From the first time I met you."
"Really? That's amazing."
However, The Juliet remembered her father. She knew that he would never approve of their relationship and also that she lying to Romeo. "But," she added with this look of despair, which made Gage worried.
"But what?"
"I... I." Oddey wasn't sure if she should tell him the truth or not, so she turned her back on him.
He dashed to stand right in front of her. "Tell me, what is it?"
"I don't know if... I'm ready for a relationship, I... I want to prioritize my studies and... my art, so if... I'm just worried that it might get in the way."
Gage took her hand again. "Do you know why I like you so much?" he asked her. "Not only are you the best artists and acting coach, but because you're down-to-earth, patient, and kind. You're the one that I turn to whenever I'm upset, and you're the one that I trust the most."
Oddey was touched by his words, and then he held both of her hands. "Gage..." she whimpered while trying not to cry.
"And I promise to do the same with you. That I'm the person you can also trust and turn to when you're down."
Oddey was too choked up to say anything from that. Hearing words like trust crushed her inside. Suddenly, the Romeo embraced his Juliet from behind, and they just stared at the view as they enjoyed each other's company.
