Chapter 3 : What is Romanticism?

Days passed, and in the Fine Arts building, Oddey was in her class paying attention to her Professor, Madame Vestia, a name she told her students to call her. A woman in her mid-fifties, with a black bob hairstyle, brown skin, and heavy make-up wearing an oversized white blouse with a black shawl around her neck, palazzo pants, and boots. "What's the first thing you have in your mind when you think of romanticism?" she asked her students as she stood in front of the class.

"Love," answered one student.

"Look at this painting right here of The Oath of Love by Hans Zatzka, now tell me, what makes it a romanticism art?" Madame Vestia asked in her raspy, low voice.

"The couples having a moment painted in it."

"Yes, anything else?" Madame Vestia wanted more than what that one student said, but the room got silent, looking rather clueless, and then she showed another painting. "This one, a painting of Lady of Shallot, and is not even couple in it, but it is considered romanticism. Why?"

"Because of its ethereal aesthetic from using soft, bright lightings and feminine colors," Oddey explained.

"Bingo. Mainly, when we think of romantic, the first we think of is the love of two people but it is an art movement expanding the emotions of the artists and the viewers with scenes of beauty, anger, adoration, horror, and suspense too. Isn't that what love is in real life?" the professor joked with them as they laughed a bit at it.

"That's so true," giggled another student.

"Alright, joking aside. Today we learned that love is a wonderful feeling that these paintings perfectly represent so I want you to come up with an artwork of romanticism, painting, or a hand sketch and present it to the class on Tuesday, I repeat, Tuesday. Nothing complicated, just make what you can. Now, before class finishes in less than twenty minutes, you can use this time to just come up with what you want to work on."

Madame Vestia sat at her desk doing some paperwork while her students were on their laptops or tablets to find some inspiration of some sort. Oddey couldn't think of anything as she went through her laptop to get an idea for her work, which could be stressful to anyone who was in the design and creative field.

Once the day ended, Oddey was sitting by the bench in the university's garden with a pink plain paper on her lap and a pencil in her right hand, she had her earphones that were connecting to her phone with her favorite song playing 'Born For You" By David Pomeranz. People were passing by minding their own business, and Oddey watched them with a blank stare, yet her mind was full of questions as to why she couldn't think of something to draw.

All of a sudden, she saw a bridge in the distance that connected the two buildings, which made her thoughts just drift somewhere, and she remembered the stranger who saved her life. Oddey couldn't help but have that face in her head, especially his eyes, since that was the first thing she saw.

She began sketching in her journal in memory, his jawline, his hair, and lastly, the eyes, then after that, she put some details into it.

Whenever Oddey was doing her sketch, it made her laser focus, which made her artwork beautiful when it was done. She was shading to add some shadows to his face to give a more dramatic effect.

"HEY!" Rita startled her, Oddey quickly folded the paper where she drew the guy with the pretty eyes out of panic.

"Woah," Oddey reacted.

"A little payback for scaring me."

"Okay, I guess that's fair. Anyway, wanna get some coffee before going back to the dorm?"

"Yes on the coffee but I'm not going to the dorm yet I have to meet my groupmates in the study hall after to start working on this presentation so I'm gonna need caffeine to wake my soul."

"That's fine, I might go to the art studio anyway to work on my portfolio later," Oddey stood up from the bench, and unbeknownst to her, the paper slipped from her lap and fell on the ground then left with Rita.

The two were about to exit to the main gate of the campus, and some posters had just been put up, it was from the theatre club that they were announcing that they would be having a play but it didn't say what it would be. "Oohh, an annual play," Rita noticed. "Do you know what it'll be?"

"I'm not in the theatre club," Oddey was puzzled as to why she asked her that.

"Sorry, I just thought since Madame Vestia is your prof and all, you might know something." Madame Vestia was not only an art professor but also the supervisor for the theatre club.

"That doesn't mean she'll tell me and the other students in the art class."

"Ugh... right, I wonder how good the theatre plays here in college."

"Looks great in the brochure," Oddey shrugged, and then they walked out through the gate.

---

About an hour ago in rendering class, Gage was in the middle of designing an avante-garde building. He felt so proud looking at his work. The class was over, and everyone had to save their file on the school's computer and pick up their things to leave. "Before you go," the professor said to them, so the student turned their heads to him to listen. "Since you all will be applying for internships this year, the Carm U will be having an architecture showcase after winter break, you will build a diorama of a building, details will soon be posted on the main website and we will be inviting firms that are looking for interns."

Everyone was thrilled to hear that even Gage, it was his time to shine to show off what he got for those big-shot firms. "I hope Simone Tan Inc. will be there, I always dreamed of getting in there," a female classmate said to him.

"Yeah, or Gomez and Gomez Design Studio," said one guy. "What about you, Gage? who do you want to be there?"

"My dream is to work with CASAS," Gage replied.

"CASAS?!" gasped the girl. She was surprised at Gage's dream company to apply in. "Oh, wow!"

"I never heard that one," said the guy. "What's so great about it?"

"You're kidding.  You have never heard of that? You get to design for international clients and travel the world."

"Seriously?! That's so cool!"

"They got more benefits than that, but it's a long shot, so I don't know, depends on who will offer me once they see my diorama," Gage added.

"Well, your designs are all great. Maybe they will offer an internship. Oh! this is so exciting."

"I know," Gage agreed with a smile on his face as he imagined what it would be like to work in these companies.

About a minute later, Gage was in the hallway still grinning with joy and thinking of what he should make for the showcase. His two friends came out from their classes and saw him. "Yo! Gage," Felix called out to him. "Over here."

"Hey! guys," Gage greeted.

"You look happy," Courtney remarked, noticing his face.

"Yeah, my professor in rendering class just announced that there'll be a showcase for the architect majors in about a month."

"That's so cool! I'm so happy for you."

"I know, the idea of having my designs seen by real architects. I have to make something amazing."

"What about a building that looks like Minecraft?" Felix suggested.

"I'll put that on the list," Gage chuckled.

"Real head-turner design," Courtney scoffed.

They got to the garden, and there were more of the posters from the theatre club about an upcoming play put up around school when they walked to the garden. "Hey, what's this?" Felix pointed at them. "Do you guys know about this?"

"Nope, we have no idea," Gage shook his head.

"What? How come?"

"Because no one told us."

"Okay, strange, then how will you know what part you'll audition?"

"Dude, that doesn't mean they are not going to tell us."

They got to the same bench where Oddey sat with the paper still there, but they did not see it. Yet. "This is typical of Madame Vestia's style to not tell us that she already planned what we're gonna do," Courtney sighed. "She'll put up these posters first, and then she'll tell us."

"Weird style," Felix voiced.

"I'm okay with it, whatever it is, I just wish I get the lead this time. Oh! I hope it's Beauty and the Beast."

"Yeah, you'd be a great Beast," Felix teased. He even laughed at his joke, but Gage was not laughing and glared at his best friend because he was wrong to say that to Courtnse she then grabbed him and pulled him to see her angry face. "Di..did I say Beast, I mean Be...be... Belle, you'd... be a great Belle."

Courtney let go of him after he rephrased his statement. "I'm serious, I want to play lead."

"Then let's just wait what's the play gonna be, and then I'll help you rehearse," Gage told her.

"Thanks," her cheeks got all red.

"No problem."

Courtney's phone buzzed, and so did Gage's, then checked them to see what it was. "A text from the theatre club, there'll be a meeting this Saturday from 9 am to 4 pm," she said.

"Maybe she'll tell you what play you guys will be in," Felix said.

"Duh... what else? but I wish Madame Vestia just told us what it is. "

"You and me both, I can't go this Saturday. My mom wants me home," Gage informed.

"What? But you can't just go. I'll be lonely," Courtney pouted.

"I'll go with you," Felix offered.

Sadly, she declined that. "I'll be lonely."

"I'm just a third wheel to you, am I?"

"It's not like that. Besides, it's members only."

"There are other members that you're friends with," Gage reminded her.

"I guess."

"Maybe I can stick around a little after she tells us what play we'll be doing."

"Yay!" Courtney beamed and jumped for joy. "Thank you! Thank you!"

"Anything for you," Gage rolled his eyes at her and shook his head, he moved his feet a bit when he heard a crumpling sound so he looked down, he saw the folded pink paper. "What the hell?"

"What's that?"

"Oh no, litterbug," Felix looked annoyed. "Must be a freshman."

Gage picked it up and saw half the sketched face. "It's a drawing."

"Of what?" Courtney quipped and leaned closer to know what it was.

Gage was so curious along with the other two that he unfolded the paper and was stunned to see the full face. "Dude! Gage, that looks like you," Felix reacted.

"It is me," Gage was in disbelief while staring at his own face being drawn by a mysterious artist. He turned the paper over to see if there was a name written on it. "Who... who drew this?"

"How should we know?" Courtney responded. "I didn't see anyone sitting here at least a minute before we did."

"Must be a stalker," Felix thought, Gage and Courtney found that theory very dumb. "What? It's possible. "

"I doubt that, maybe it's one of those art students that likes to draw random students," Gage replied, then looked at the illustration and somehow admired it. "Whoever it is, they're good."

"Sure, if you say so," Courtney's brow lifted.

"It's possible that it fell out from their stuff accidentally." Gage folded the paper and put it in the pocket of his bag.

"You're gonna keep it?"

"Yup, why?"

"It is my face anyway, and who knows, maybe if I find the artist, I'll return it to her... or him. Come on, let's just go and hang out in the dorm."
