Chapter 26 : Collapsed Balcony

It was late, and Oddey was sleeping in one of the rooms in the suite. All of a sudden, she woke up and heard the sound of a piano. She got up from the bed, put on a nightrobe, and then went out the door.

At first, she wondered where the sound was coming from and figured that it came from downstairs. The girl looked through the banister, she saw her father by the piano placing one elbow on the keys as his head leaned on his hand while others were just pressing some notes but not so much playing anything in particular.

Oddey came down to check on him. "Hey, Dad. What are you... playing?"

Leon stopped pressing the keys, then put his head up and gave this blank stare to his daughter with a crooked smile on his face, "hi, Mochie pie," he said by slurring.

"Dad, are you okay?"

"Yes, yes, I am. I'm sorry, I just had too much to drink."

"It's okay, Dad." The concerned daughter could sense that her father had something troubling him.

"I finally showed my face to them, and it was the most satisfying thing I have ever seen."

"I bet."

"Adrian completely freaked out that he confronted me in the parking lot."

"Did you get hurt?"

"Nope, I didn't. But the pain in my heart... after seeing them again, it brings back that very day when I saw them in bed together with my ex-wife." Leon rubbed his head. "And from there, I had to see that they have a son, the product of their affair."

Oddey gulped and just kept quiet. "That's awful."

"Definitely, but you know what," he added with light in his eyes and a genuine smile. "No matter what happens in my life because of that asshole, I am lucky to have you."

"You too," she said to him, then went to him and embraced Leon. "I love you, Dad."

"I love you, too, Mochie pie."

Oddey felt guilty that she was starting to get teary-eyed seeing her father depressed and felt like she too betrayed him by being with Gage. Eva appeared, and she saw the young girl comforting Leon.

----

The next morning, a late morning, Eva just finished her breakfast and was reading a magazine by the counter of the suite with some of the leftovers for her boss. Eventually, Leon was up as he came down the stairs with this hungover feeling. "Morning," he moaned, then sat down with her.

"Morning, you looked better," she joked.

"Oooh, my head." The man sat down with her and held his forehead since it was spinning.

"Do not fret, I ordered you hangover juice." Eva took it from the serving tray and placed it in front of him. Afterward, she helped him by filling his plate with scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, and a couple of toasts.

"Thank you." Before Leon was about to take a sip, he realized something. "Where's my daughter? Is she still asleep?"

"Oh, I was going to tell you that she had to go to CarmU."

"What? Why?"

"There's an emergency. The set she designed for the theatre club collapsed, so she had to return to school about an hour ago to help fix it."

"I see. I feel so terrible that she had to see me drunk last night," the man sighed, feeling embarrassed about it.

"Don't worry, she understands."

"Still, I don't want her to see me like that."

"You saw Adrian and your ex-wife last night. It must've been overwhelming after all these years," Eva said.

Leon drank the hangover juice and somehow slammed the glass on the coaster. "You know, I thought after being on top, the pain inside me healed."

"Then you should take it easy."

"Not only did I see them again, but I met their son," he added with this distraught look on his face.

"You did," the woman gulped.

"Seems like a good kid, and from his building model, he's talented. When I looked at him, I couldn't help but notice that he had his father's face with Marie's eyes." Leon groaned, put his hand on his face, and shook his head. "It... It brought back... that... that day."

"Hey, hey. It's over. You shouldn't dwell on that anymore." Eva stopped him from thinking about the past when she took his hand. "Look where you are now. You've gone this far to affect you. You are successful, you are the CEO of one of the top firms in the world, and you have a daughter who loves you so much."

"You're right." And just like that, Leon's spirit was lifted by her motivation, so he held her hand tightly and put a small smile on her.

"Now, come on. Eat your breakfast. You need the strength if you want to get back at them."

The man gazed into her eyes and even kissed the back of her hand. "Thank you, Eva. I'm also very fortunate to have you in my life." Then began eating afterward while his beautiful assistant just watched while feeling relieved that Leon had become emotionally strong.

----

Since it was a Sunday, Gage was about to go out with his two closest friends and waited for them by the campus garden. It was only five minutes that he wanted to call them to ask what was taking them until he saw the girl he liked very much to come in from the gate. "Oddey, Hey!" he went to her.

"Gage." Oddey beamed when he saw him approaching her.

"You're here."

"Uhm... yeah, I am," she stuttered that she became jittery just being close to him. "One of the assistant directors said that the balcony set collapsed."

Gage became taken aback. "What?"

"I had to come here to check it out."

"Oh."

The girl noticed him a bit dressed up. "You going somewhere?"

"Yup," he confirmed. "I'm going out to celebrate."

"Celebrate? Celebrate what?"

"I got an offer to intern for this architect firm."

"Oh, right, the exhibit," Oddey recalled. "Wow, that's awesome. Well, you deserve it."

"I'd... invite you, but I didn't know that you'd be here," Gage stammered.

"That's alright, I need to worry about the collapsed balcony anyway."

"The hell you should," Courtney interrupted them as she walked to stand beside her crush and intentionally. "Lucky for you, we haven't gotten to the balcony scene yet."

That made Oddey feel lousy for her carelessness. "Sorry."

"Court. Chill. It was an honest mistake," Gage told her.

"What if I got hurt?" The jealous theatre actress snarled. "She should know what she did."

Felix came and could see that there was tension between his friends. "What's going on?"

"Oddey here made a dodgy set that could gotten me seriously hurt, or else there won't be any play at all."

"Courtney, stop it," Gage demanded.

"Yeah, and that wouldn't be so bad anyway," Felix joked to defend Oddey. "Right, Gage?"

The architect student nearly burst into laughing until Courtney gave him a dirty look and grunts, then gave the same facial message to the other male friend. Oddey even let out a giggle. "Not funny, Felix," Courtney growled. "It's my safety at stake?"

"Okay, sorry," Felix apologized by snickering right after. "But come on, Court. Take a chill pill. Oddey didn't mean for that to happen."

"Look, I'm gonna check it right now," Oddey reassured the actress. "And I will make sure it won't happen again."

"It better be," Courtney responded in a stern tone.

"Court. Seriously. Stop it," Gage called her out, seeing that the poor girl was feeling more terrible than she already was.

Oddey decided not to say anything after that and just slowly backed away to leave. "I'll just go. I'll see you guys tomorrow."

"You okay?" Felix whispered to her.

"Yup," Oddey whimpered.

Once the art student went farther away, the boys gave Courtney a disapproving look. "Court, what the heck?" Felix expressed his disgust towards her behavior. "You just hurt her feelings."

"Yeah, you didn't have to do that," Gage added.

"What? She can't get away with making careless mistakes," Courtney argued.

"But you don't have to scold her like a kid. She knows she made a mistake, and she apologized. Didn't she?"

"Well, that doesn't mean she needs to be coddled. I don't know why Madame Vestia had to choose her to design the set. She's an amateur."

Felix rolled his eyes and shook his head towards her unreasonable action. "Well, you're no prize either," he snided.

The actress felt affected by that as he poked her the wrong way. "What's that supposed to mean?"

"Okay, cool it." Gage halted his two best friends to almost kill each other. "Let's not ruin this day."

"Right. Sorry," Felix sighed.

"I'm not," Courtney claimed and began walking. "Let's just go."

The two gentlemen glanced at each other then at her and then just followed out the gate. Gage felt awful just remembering seeing Oddey's sad face since he felt like he did not do enough to defend her from one of his demanding best friends.

Later, they were at the diner, and Courtney went to the bathroom, leaving the two boys by the table waiting for their orders to come. "I hope Oddey is okay," Gage sighed.

"The way Courtney handled it, I doubt it," Felix replied.

"You know how she is."

"Yeah, save it for your book."

"Dude, no matter what, we're all still friends here," Gage reminded.

Felix exasperated. "I know."

Speaking of the witch, Courtney came back and sat next to her crush. "Again. I'm so happy for you, Gage," she said. "Our dreams are coming true little by little. I'm lead on the play, and you get to intern with this firm."

"Yeah, and I'm thinking about entering my movie for this animation contest..."

"No one cares about that." The self-absorbed girl cut him off.

That made Felix pissed in silence and even more upset that Gage did not seem to bother to have his back for being treated like that.

----

In the auditorium, the balcony set collapsed, which gave the art student such stress as she stared and her crew members in utter horror at the discarded matter on the ground by the stage. "Oh no..." she whimpered. "This is so not good. How...?"

"We have no idea," one of them said. "We just got a call from the assistant director that he just came in and just saw it like this."

"Oh, God. No one got hurt. Right?"

"Nope. Just the set."

"Still. This is bad," Oddey whined. "The Juliet could've gotten seriously injured if she started rehearsing the balcony scene."

"So what should we do?" asked another one. "Like, how do we fix this?"

"Yeah, and we can't buy any more materials too," the first one reminded.

"I'll figure it out later. Let's just clean this all up first," Oddey told them. "And also, let's check the other set to see that it wouldn't fall off on the actors."

After some tiring hours of work on a Sunday, everyone left but the art student left behind sitting by the audience seat and just staring at the broken set to figure out how to fix it with her pink paper sketchpad with her.

However, the more she looked at it, the more it just made her feel self-doubting that she could think of a solution. Also, the thought of Courtney criticizing her in front of the guy she liked added to the pressure she was feeling.

Suddenly, her phone vibrated, so she decided to just see who was texting her. On the notification box, Oddey was stumped to see that there was a message from Gage.

'Sorry about Courtney earlier. Are you okay?'

Although happy that he checked on her, she looked back at how miserable her father felt when mentioning that he saw Gage's parents. Shame and guilt got to her that she decided not to reply to him and decided to just go back to her dorm.
