"Excuse me, sir," Louise addressed the watchman stationed at the desk. "Is it possible that I could get some pants?"
"Pants?" The man asked, obviously confused.
"Um, yes. I'm cold and I don't seem to be wearing any pants." Louise stated awkwardly.
"I can get you the phone so you can call a relative to come and post bail, but I don't think we have pants for you."
"That would've been helpful to know earlier." Louise grumbled and stood up, pain immediately shooting through her left foot. "Ow."
"Are you okay, miss?"
"I'm fine." She answered, plopping back down onto her cot. "Am I allowed to use the phone from the cell? Oh my gosh, was that a pun?"
"Not to burst your bubble, but I'm 87% positive that wasn't a pun." Floyd interrupted. "Also, Mr. Watchman, how much is bail?"
"$250." The man answered, and Louise's eyes went wide as saucers. "And the name's Robert."
"Robert, you've got to be kidding me."
"Unfortunately, I am most definitely not. Underage drinking is serious, kid. Now, young lady, you can call whoever you want - but you only have a minute." Robert handed the small phone over to Louise, who quickly dialed her brother's number.
"Macy, I swear to god, just tell your sister I don't want the goddamn Girl Scout cookies! If I eat any more of those things I'll gain like a billion pounds!" Louis yelled into the phone.
"Louis, it's Louise! Come pick me up and bring $250!" She cried, having no time to waste.
"Louise! Oh my gosh, it's really you! I thought you got abducted by aliens! Where are you?" He chirped.
"Jail." She answered shortly, since she only had 25 seconds left on their call. "In Mulberry. Bail is $250. Come get me, please. You're the one who got me into this in the first place!"
"You're lucky I feel bad." His voice came crackling through after a moment's hesitation.
"You love me." Louise teased.
"I do not." He denied.
"Yes you do."
"Fine." Louis gave in easily. "But half of it is going to be your money."
"Hey!" Louise began to protest, but Robert ripped the phone from her grip, telling her that time was up.
Then it was Floyd's turn. "What happens if no one picks up?" He asked.
"Then you're pretty much screwed." Robert answered, and Louise was almost positive he was holding back a nasty grin.
"Alrighty then." Floyd began punching in a series of numbers into the phone. Louise averted her attention to the set of keys hanging by the door and wondered what would happen if she tried to break out. It probably wouldn't work, since she had no coordination whatsoever, or athletic ability. The only things she worked out repeatedly were her eyes, while she read.
"Okay," Floyd was saying when Louise looked back to him. "Thanks...sorry...bye."
"I'll be taking the phone now." Robert held out his had impatiently and Louise scowled. He had torn it from her hands without warning. People these days.
Floyd placed the phone in Robert's palm, who then proceeded to saunter back over to his place at the desk.
"So..." Louise trailed off and glanced at Floyd. "I guess this is goodbye."
"I go to your school," Floyd grinned. "We can still keep in touch. Maybe hang out...just, make sure you have pants on next time."
"You want to hang out with me?" Louise raised her eyebrows in surprise.
"No, I was taking to Robert." Floyd said dryly, rolling his eyes. "Of course I want to hang out with you!"
Louise was still processing the fact that a GUY wanted to hang out with her, the bookworm who talked to no one.
"So, do you want to exchange numbers? Or am I not cool enough for you?" Floyd joked.
"Eh, you're okay." Louise giggled and recited her number as Louis barged into the building.
"Alright dude, I got the money now give me my sister!" He yelled. "Wow, that sounded like you were holding her for ransom."
"Okay...?" Robert walked over to the cell and let Louise out.
"Bye, Floyd." She waved shyly and walked over to her twin brother.
"Thanks for getting me out."
"Oh, no problem," Louis smirked. "It was all your money, anyway."
"Louis!" She whined.
"What? You're the one who got caught and put into jail!"
"You're the one who made me go to that party in the first place!"
"You know what?" Louis proclaimed nervously, glancing over to Robert. "Let's discuss this elsewhere." He dragged Louise out to the parking lot. "Girl, you can't just say things like that in JAIL. What if that dude heard you, and decided to keep me there? Then we'd be back to square one. Mom and Dad are on a business trip, and you know Lucy wouldn't pick us up. So we'd be stuck. You need to brush up on your street smarts, sistah." He winked.
Louise rolled her eyes. Her brother always managed to somehow turn serious matters into jokes. Not that she minded or anything. They climbed into the car and were off.
Louise watched the scenery as Louis serenaded her along with Sam Smith. "You and me, we made a vow...for better or for worse!"
"So, can I get my books back?" Louise interrupted his terrible singing.
"Girl, after this awful behavior? I think not." He snapped his fingers in a Z formation.
Louise, however, was not amused. "Can I at least pick one?"
"Sure. Also, can I just ask one question?" He pleaded.
"Go for it." She sighed, knowing that the question was probably going to be totally outlandish and embarrassing.
"Where are your pants?"
