NO ONE KNEW WHAT WAS BEHIND THAT GATE

Chapter I

Two Friends, William and Lewis were on their own investigation about mysterious obsidian gate near the city Kryssbo on the far north. William Marshal was a well-trained knight from the central continent, who wanted to be famous all around the world. He dreamed every day about bards singing about him and his adventures in taverns. William met Lewis Godfrey in the centre of the Grand Market in Legene, city placed in a central continent. He was a bard with stout posture, which William needed. After some minor stories together they created a stable, harmonious team. While resting in roadside inn, they heard about the gate to apocalypse on the northern continent. They looked at themselves and nodded agreeably "That's our chance to wirte down in history!". In rougly a month they managed to gather the gold needed to travel throughout the sea to the north, directly to port city Kryssbo, where the obsidian gate was supposed to be. They knew it will not be so easy to find on their own, so they started to look for clues in the city.

After city tour and some talks with citizens of Kryssbo they have decided to split-William will go talk to the local mayor and Lewis will talk with the well-known here fortune teller.

William knocked in the mayor doors. After a while the door opened. He saw a 7 feet height old man who had a crude look of the face. William looked up "Good afternoon, sir, can we talk ?". Old man snorted "About what ?". "About the gate" said William. Mayor looked at him with interest "Come in". The hero stepped in the house. It did not looked well. In his homeland he would tell that this is a ruined house of a miserable guy. However, he was not surprised. As a child he heard a lot of stories about poor north. They sat opposite on the chairs near the fireplace.

William: So, can you tell me something about it ?

Mayor: Yes, of course. It all begins in past century. My grandfather, Olaf conquered this city. His people scouted the area to find supplies, resources et cetera.

William: And then they find...

Mayor: A massive entrance made of obsidian in the middle of corn field. But there's nothing behind them, really. You can go around it, looks like a ancient joke.

William: Why?

Mayor: Because there is nothing more, I said.

William: Are they locked ? Maybe this doors.. they are some kind of portal ?

Mayor: Aidis, our local diviner thinks so, but I do not believe in myths. You can see that by yourself, give me a map, I will show you where. And yes, they are locked, but they don't have seem to even have a keyhole

CHAPTER II

Lewis Godfrey entered the diviner's tent. She was a middle-aged pretty woman. She had no wrinkles nor complexes. She wore the violet puffed dress and she was sitting towards the blue shining sphere. She combed her long dark hair and looked at visitor. He quivered. She opened her eyes and they were all white with a tiny blue dot inside. She raised her hand and indicated a carpet next to her "sit". Lewis, with caution, slowly moved to the fortune teller and sat on the thick, violet carpet. Then he broke the silence between them "I came here to ask". She interrupted "I know exactly why are you here". Lewis smiled, he met a lot of sorcerers and magic tricks, but never some kind of telepathy. Although, with a little smile he wanted to ask.

Lewis: Are you reading my mind ? You could find something you should not know by now

Aidis: No, I am not

Lewis quivered once more. The woman now had a voice of a hundreds. It looked like the voices were speaking through her.

Aidis: Saurus told me you would come

Lewis: And who is that ?

Aidis: Aspect of death

Lewis: Okay... So could you tell me more about this thing ?

Aidis laughed with all voices "Yes, my dear, I can. The Apocalypse gate is the doors, which once opened, you cannot step back. Many like you tried, but only one person survived. The thing is, when you open the door, you will see things that you did not seen before. The historians said, that if you get all of the 7 keys, you will bring the apocalypse in his own being to this world. But worry not, only one key is needed to open the door and look what is inside. I see, that you two are worthy to look inside and maybe passing by, and that is why destiny brings you here"

Lewis swallowed. He was scared of her words, but curiosity was bigger than his fear. "Where can I find this key ?" Lewis asked. "Here" Fortune teller gave him a round key with a creepy smile on her face. Lewis thanked quietly and left the tent. Now, as they have a key and precise location of the "obsidian gate" time has came to check this legend.

CHAPTER III

Lewis and William took a two days length travel through forests and swamps. Finally, they reached their destination. The doors looked exactly like they thought. They stood in the middle of huge sized field and they have been really made of obsidian. As they approached the gate, they went around it twice, but with no interesting insides. "They are just looking like a monument or memorial" William said. Lewis looked at his teammate "So, who will open the doors ?". "I will" William drawed his sword and took the key. Lewis sighted with relief, he still was frightened by the Aidis words. William moved closely to the doors, while Lewis stand aside, next to the gate. He remembered what diviner's said about looking inside, so he just wanted to stay safe if something goes wrong. The brave knight applied the round key with moon symbol on it to the gate, then he instantly stepped back. The door slowly opened and Lewis saw only the bright green light falling on his friend. William every second looked interested more, his pupils were wider than it is possible in normal conditions. Lewis shouted "Will, what do you see?! Will ?!" but got no response. About a few seconds later, once brave knight from central continent was now terrified like a kid. He started to crying and he looked at his sword. Lewis was observing him all the time "What are you doing ? Just come over here, don't look anymore!". William have not listened to him, as he would be all alone in this place. He rotated the sword and stabbed himself right in the stomach. Lewis yelled but he can't did anything. He just froze because of overwhelming fear. William fell on the knees and looked last time in the green light shining from the gate. "Heroes of the sun, forgive me" said and fell on the ground unconscious. Lewis sat at the ground and started to think. "What should I do ? Maybe the fortune teller had me specially on mind ? Maybe I am the one who should looked instead of William ? Is she telling the truth at all ? What is really inside ? It don't matter, my life is on the stake... I should destroy the gate". He looked last time at his friend's body "Goodbye, buddy. I am sorry that it ended that way, it should be me". Lewis stood there thinking about an hour and left the field, while the gate mysterious closed.

The curiosity is something that pushes us, the humanity, forward. Although it can be also our doom, something that pushes us straight to the grave. So are we lost ? Of course not. The fear is coming by as our savior.
