Chapter 7 (23)

Grian rubbed his eyes, finding himself slightly blinded by the infinity-room style cell, squinting past the lights at the figure slumped against the back of the cell, glaring at the cameras embedded in the side of the room. Grian followed his gaze to a monitor, one which was connected to some sort of camera in his eye, leading to an infinite loop.

"What's your name?" Grian asked softly, squatting down to reach eye level.

"Ewroshi," he grunted, refusing to look up, instead just glaring at the floor, his wings wrapped around his body protectively.

"Your watcher name," Grian clarified, sighing and raising an eyebrow, his voice soft and quiet.

"Shiro."

"How long have you been part of them? The watchers I mean," Grian asked, his voice uncertain and slightly shaky, making Ewroshi look up, his gaze bored and making Grian feel uncomfortable with how sharp it was.

"Clearly you're not experienced with interrogations. You're obviously a defect and untrained, and you obviously weren't alone in hypixel. You had the strength and abilities to easily overpower me, I just don't believe you have learned to harness it. Or you were holding back." he tilted his head.

"I think it's far more likely to be the first one. Tell me, child. Who's training you?"

"I'm not a child," Grian muttered, flicking his middle finger up from behind his back for a couple of seconds. "And so what if I'm a defect? I don't really think it matters?" he replied, trying to stay calm despite his aggravation.

"You don't seem that great at interrogations to me, so I'd assume you're not necessarily meant to be here. And your lack of answer indicates to me that it was Listeners, in which case they're clearly inadequate to teach you. You being a defect matters, because you're rogue and you're dangerous," he stated, his face calm and unmoving, continuing to stare into Grian's eyes, now returned to their normal blue colour.

"What are you trying to imply?" Grian asked, clenching a fist before releasing it, locking his jaw.

"Nothing, just that simply... You would learn better from your own kind."

"I AM NOT ONE OF THEM!" Grian snarled, pressing himself against the bars, flinching away when he felt Ewroshi brush his arm. "And the way you speak to me sounds threatening, so I would quit that now unless you want me to practice me sword skills."

"Did you know torture is a war crime?" Ewroshi said quietly. "And I'm pretty sure imprisonment is too."

"I really don't care," Grian snapped, sighing and looking away, rubbing his forehead.

"Would you like us to take over?" Grian flinched slightly when he felt a hand rest on his shoulder, looking back and nodding once he recognised hem them as Jace, walking out and slumping against the wall once he reached outside, resting his head against the stone and closing his eyes, feeling the wind push his hair back.

"Hey," Netty says, causing Grian to open one eye lazily, smiling at her.

"Hey."

"I heard Hypixel went well," she said, biting her lip when Grian didn't respond for a few seconds, assuming she'd touched a nerve.

"It went better than I expected," Grian admitted, rubbing his arm. "I don't suppose I had very high expectations to begin with though."

"You did well from what they told me," Netty said comfortingly, resting a hand on his shoulder.

Grian shrugged. "Barely. Most of it was a fluke."

"Stop downplaying yourself," Netty grumbled, sighing.

"I'm not, if anything I'm being optimistic," Grian argued, glancing at the now shut door he'd come out of.

"You were never this pessimistic before he- the watchers," Netty said, avoiding Grian's gaze.

"It's not the hermits fault!" Grian defended, immediately stiffening.

"I wasn't saying that," Netty argued, causing Grian to stand up, clenching his fists and gritting his teeth.

"It sure sounded like you were," Grian retorted angrily, glaring at her for a few seconds before turning away, crossing his arms.

"Grian... You have to see it from our perspective... We came there expecting you to come back but we barely see you and it would've been better if you'd said no and just stayed there in some ways-" Netty tried to reason, but it only made Grian more angry, as was clear by the way he started shaking.

"I'M TRYING NETTY! I'M TRYING MY BEST, BUT ITS OBVIOUSLY NOT GOOD ENOUGH!"

Netty visibly flinched, Grian now facing her but still not meeting her eyes, biting back a tear as he turned away, starting to walk off before stiffening. He looked up, slightly unnerved, seeing the glimpse of a wing tuck away behind a pillar, instantly on high alert, resting a hand on Netty's shoulder as if to tell her to stay quiet. She followed his gaze, her eyes widening as she too froze, the figure coming into full view, knowing that they'd been seen.

Netty and Grian simultaneously flinched as the figure shot down, sending a blast of energy in Netty's direction, catching her off guard as it sent her flying into the nearby tree, her head connecting with a crack and falling forward, her hair matted with blood.

Grian stumbled back, nervously forming a purple shield that managed to deflect most of the Watcher's first blow, but it dissipated immediately after, the magic clashing and shattering the little defence Grian had put up. Grian formed another shield, sparking when the Watcher sent a blast of magic towards him again, this time managing to stay strong and withstand the hit, releasing when Grian focused his energy into a barely tangible sword, separating the particles into strings to slide in before solidifying, tugging the sword out and leaving the watcher gasping.

Stunned, Grian staggered back, feeling his chest constrict as a dozen or so winged figures surrounding him, a couple hissing at him as he felt himself pressed against the wall, his head slamming against the stone, feeling as if his consciousness was ripping itself out of his head, his vision blurring as his head feel to the side, losing consciousness after a few seconds, engulfed by the darkness.
