Chapter 3
Xisuma pulled open the closet door, the figure inside bursting out and darting to the nearby window, attempting to break the cobblestone above it so he could fit through it. Doc walked closer, probably not trying to scare him but he did look very menacing and he was still brandishing his iron sword. The boy - he looked like he was 18 though he was likely older - raised a sword to defend himself, looking slightly scared.
Doc took that as an attack, swinging his sword violently towards him, causing him to duck and wrap his wings around himself - wait wings?! He angrily lashed out, clashing his dark blade against Doc's as he again deflected a hit.
The sword itself was something Mumbo had never seen before, hints of purple in the black, and probably overpowered Doc's. He was a competent PvPer, and likely could take on False at his peak though right now he seemed shaky and unpractised. Iskall used their wooden pickaxe to prevent him from hitting Doc, though Mumbo noticed they seemed to not be attacking, at least not fatally.
Xisuma threw his sword at one of his wings, producing a shallow wound as the sword bounced off, completely disarming him. He curled his wing around his body like protection, backing away into a corner, in that moment seeming absolutely terrified.
He was wearing a red sweater and had a blonde fringe, as well as purple wings sticking out his back. Mumbo cautiously stepped forward, resting a hand on his shoulder nervously, afraid he'd scare him if he moved too fast.
"Hey, I'm sorry, we didn't mean to hurt you," Mumbo said softly, internally cursing as he wished he was better at the reassuring thing. Mumbo heard Xisuma whispering to Doc and Iskall, hissing about what to do.
"I shouldn't have attacked back," he whispered softly, as if preventing himself from reliving memories he didn't want to relive.
"Hey, it's not your fault, we attacked first. What's your name?" Mumbo replied softly, smiling reassuringly at him.
"Grian, he/him," he said uncertainly, his voice slightly louder but still shaky.
"I'm Mumbo, also he/him," Mumbo replied, glancing behind at Xisuma, prompting him to do the same.
"I'm Xisumavoid,, he/him" he said, stepping forward slightly and biting his lip nervously, his hand ready to draw out his sword at any sudden movement. "But people call me Xisuma or X for short."
"Iskall, they/them," Iskall introduced, smiling confidently and holding out a hand to shake which Grian nervously took.
"Doc, all with preference for he," Doc said roughly, notably staying still fairly far back compared to the others.
"How are you here?" He whispered nervously, looking up slightly more, his wing relaxing.
"I'm not entirely sure," Xisuma admitted, glancing at the window, seeing it start to get a bit lighter. "We were trying to get somewhere but I think the portal glitched. Do you know what happened to this place?"
He hesitated before shaking his head, and when Xisuma asked if he was the only one there, he shook his head again.
"Once some of my friends were here with me, and this world was pretty nice. It was... It was nice. They're gone now." He said the last part bluntly, clenching his fists slightly as he remembered what happened.
"What happened to them?" Xisuma asked softly, softening slightly and letting his hand fall away from his sword.
"I- I'm not entirely sure," Grian whispered, biting his lip and blinking the tears threatening to spill over back. Mumbo thought that he was lying about not knowing what happened, though he assumed there was some kind of trauma behind it that he didn't want to talk about.
"Look, you don't have to tell us if you don't want to," Mumbo said comfortingly, earning a sharp look from Doc who clearly did want to know.
"Where'd you get that sword?" Doc asked bluntly, glancing at the black weapon by his side. "It looks like it's made of obsidian or something." Grian froze for a second when he mentioned the sword, his hand drifting unconsciously towards it.
"I just found it when the world began glitching. I think the texture of the diamond sword got merged with the obsidian or something, but it's hard to tell," he said, sliding it into his inventory and out of his hotbar.
"What about your wings? Were you born with them?" Iskall asked, causing Grian to unconsciously wrap his wring protectively around himself again.
"Um, no actually. They appeared a month or so after the world began glitching, and I'd think some elytra had gotten melded onto my back if-"
"If what?" Xisuma asked, a note of suspicion in his voice. Grian sighed, glancing out the window at the now rapidly rising sun.
"This world hasn't been updated in years, that was part of the appeal as to me and my friends playing on it. Elytras aren't in this world, it's stuck on edition 1.0," Grian explained, which answered the question of why the blocks he used were so old-school.
"Did you build the secret passage?" Mumbo cut in, and Grian eagerly nodded before frowning as he realised it wasn't really secret anymore.
"Yeah, I did, though I don't think I hid it very well, did I?" Grian asked, biting his lip. Xisuma shook his head, taking a step closer, at which Grian flinched slightly.
"While you're building's brilliant, I think your Redstone needs a bit of work," Iskall said, and Grian smiled, and Mumbo realised that it was the first time he'd smiled since they'd seen him, which was reasonable considering they'd tried to kill him.
"I don't get Redstone," he admitted, giving them a half smile.
"Do you know what the symbol on the nearby door means?" Xisuma asked, tracing his hand over the imprint in the wood. It was the same one they'd seen scattered across the world in bedrock, and it gave Mumbo an uneasy feeling, even more so than the purple tint of the world.
Grian stiffened noticably, his mind seemingly reliving a past memory as bit his lip so hard it drew a hint of blood.
"I don't want to talk about it," Grian whispered, his voice barely audible yet they all managed to hear it.
"I don't trust him," Doc whispered, not making much of an effort to stay quiet.
"You don't have to trust him Doc," Xisuma sighed, grabbing onto his arm and pulling him back slightly. "I think we could use his help to, well, not die. Respawn seems to be glitched, and we don't really know this world, so I think he'd be useful. Maybe he can come with us to the new world when the void energy refills." Doc rolled his eyes, glancing at Grian who has clearly heard what they'd been saying and was glancing at Mumbo nervously.
"You really trust him Xisuma? He tried to attack us and clearly knows more than he's letting on!"
"He's still here," Grian reminded them, edging closer to the door. Xisuma sighed, glancing at Doc.
"Give him a chance Doc. We tried to attack him too, so there's naturally gonna be some trust issues," Xisuma told him, giving him a look that said 'We'll talk about this later'. Doc gave a resigned sigh, nodding and looking at Grian expectantly.
"Did you say you knew a way out?" Grian asked quietly, looking curiously at Xisuma. He nodded, and a look of happiness crossed his face as well as a hint of fear.
"I'd- I'd like that," he admitted, smiling slightly.
"Cool, I suppose we ought to introduce you to the others," Xisuma said, stepping partially down the stairs.
"Wait, others?"
