chapter twenty nine
Prime stood at the centre of the large field, facing Vanya, both of them dressed in their training gear. Prime, looking slightly confused and frustrated, called out to their father who stood a distance away from the rest of the group, "I really don't get what I'm supposed to be doing here."
"You will be absorbing her powers," Reginald replied coolly, not looking up from his notes.
Prime crossed her arms, sceptical. "I thought we were trying to train her, not strip her powers away."
"I'm not saying you'll absorb them completely," Reginald clarified, still writing in his notebook. "You're not taking her powers; you're amplifying them. There's a difference."
Prime raised an eyebrow. "What if I end up taking all of it?"
He sighed, finally looking up. "You won't. Number Seven is more than ready for her powers now. It's highly unlikely you'll absorb them completely."
"Highly unlikely?" Prime retorted, her voice tinged with disbelief.
Reginald narrowed his eyes at her, his voice steady but firm. "Just concentrate, focus on amplifying her powers."
With an exasperated sigh, Prime turned to Vanya, who was holding her violin. "Are you ready, V?" she asked. Vanya nodded, took a deep breath, and began to play a note, releasing a burst of energy.
Prime wasn't prepared for the intensity of the blast, and since she no longer had telekinesis to shield herself, she was knocked back, skidding across the grass. She groaned as she sat up, brushing off the dirt. "Prime! Are you okay?!" came the concerned shouts from her siblings.
Raising her hand in reassurance, Prime called out, "It's fine! Nothing permanent!" She gave Vanya a smile, trying to ease her worries. "Don't worry, practice makes perfect, V. You're doing great. I just need to focus more."
She slowly stood up, glancing over at Klaus. "Hey, Klaus, now that you're a telekinetic, try to catch me before I fly away. Just focus on me and levitate me."
Klaus hesitated, looking over at Reginald, who sighed deeply. "Fine, might as well practice, Number Four," he muttered.
"Thanks," Prime said with a smile, walking back to her starting position. As Vanya played another note, Prime was once again flung back, but this time Klaus was able to catch her mid-air and gently hover her to the ground before she slid.
"Nice one, Klaus!" Ben cheered from the sidelines, giving Klaus a playful slap on the back. Klaus laughed, momentarily letting go of Prime, causing her to tumble slightly.
"Oww! Klaus, remember you're levitating a person, not a feather!" Prime shouted as she quickly scrambled to her feet.
Five, standing nearby, tapped his foot impatiently, clearly annoyed by the slow progress. Prime rolled her eyes at his impatience. "Five, careful, you're going to burn a hole in the ground with all that foot-tapping," she teased.
He rolled his eyes. "Well, maybe if you focused a little more, we wouldn't be wasting time with this."
"Sorry, I'm still learning! I only just discovered the powers I already had. Now relax, take a seat, or better yet, take a chill pill, old man," Prime shot back with a smirk. Five glared at her but huffed and sank to the ground in frustration.
Meanwhile, Allison was chatting with Luther and Diego on the side while Ben kept a watchful eye on Prime. She caught his gaze and smiled, grateful for the unspoken support. Her body was sore, and bruised from all the falls, but it was worth it. The weight of the mission was heavy on all their shoulders, and if it meant being thrown around like a ragdoll in the process, so be it. They only had one shot to save the world from its inevitable end.
...
Later that evening, the group gathered in the basement dining room, all of them except for Reginald, Pogo, and Grace.
Prime was leaning back in her chair, an ice pack pressed to her forehead to ease the headache from the day's exertions.
"Are you sure you don't want to rest, P?" Vanya asked for the tenth time, still concerned about Prime's condition.
"I'm fine, V," Prime reassured her with a smile. "It was only the first time we trained today. Let's celebrate that you're really getting the hang of your powers."
Klaus chimed in with a grin, "Hey, me too! I can see why you like levitating people, Primey. It's fun!"
Prime snorted, glancing over at him. "Glad you're enjoying it, Klaus, but please—practice on them," she pointed to the others, who gave her mock looks of betrayal. "What? Try and get levitated next time."
Diego smirked. "Yeah, well after all those times you did it to us, let's talk about karma."
"Hey! I only did it to save your sorry asses or stop you from fighting!" Prime retorted, laughing. "And if you piss me off, I can always ask Klaus to do it for me. You all know I'm his favourite, right Klaus?" She turned to him with a mischievous grin.
Klaus grinned back. "Yep."
The others groaned, rolling their eyes in unison. Five crossed his arms, his irritation growing. "Yeah, well, I'd like to see you try," he muttered.
Prime gave him a pointed look. "Geez, Five, what's with the stick up your ass? You've been extra snappy lately."
Five glared at her, unamused. "We should be focusing on eliminating The Handler, not training and testing our strengths."
Luther, who had been quiet until then, finally spoke up, his voice softer. "Rushing into things has never been the answer. I learned that the hard way, after Ben died and when I nearly died myself."
Prime looked at Luther, her twin brother, a little surprised by his admission. "Wait, are you saying you blame yourself for my death?" Ben asked, looking shocked.
Luther's face softened as he met Ben's gaze. "Of course I do. I was so persistent about the mission. All of you told me it was dangerous, but I kept pushing forward. It's exactly why I failed on that lone mission and why you... why you died."
Prime placed a hand gently on Ben's back, trying to comfort him. "I don't blame you, Luther. It could've been any of us. But I'm here now, and so are you," Ben said, giving Prime's hand a reassuring squeeze. She smiled back at him.
"It wouldn't have happened if I left," Five admitted suddenly, and the room fell silent. Everyone turned to him, surprised by his words. He shrugged when they all looked at him.
"You know what happened?" Diego asked, his tone curious.
Five nodded, explaining, "I found it in the rubble of the Academy, in some files from Dad's office. It was a detailed report about what happened."
Prime furrowed her brows, the suspicion growing. "A detailed report? How did he have that? Did any of you tell him what happened?" She turned to the others, but they all shook their heads.
"Great, another thing we're left clueless about," Prime muttered under her breath.
"Well, now we're together," Five continued, "and if the mission happens, you have me and Vanya... and Klaus with his telekinetic abilities."
Prime smirked as Klaus suddenly grinned. "Wait, Five just complimented me! Guys, Five just—"
"We get it, Klaus," Allison laughed, shaking her head. "First, we handle The Handler. Then, with all our combined strengths, we'll be ready for whatever comes next. Like we did last time—faster, smarter."
Prime nodded thoughtfully, lowering the ice pack now that the headache had subsided. "I'm just curious—how many times have we already done this?"
Diego sighed, shaking his head. "I don't know if I want to find out, especially since you said we all died in different timelines. Losing you and Ben was hard enough."
Vanya sighed deeply. "The one thing I hope we don't run into again is that damn Harold Jenkins."
Prime smirke, turning to Klaus. "Yeah, Klaus, that whole situation could've been avoided if you hadn't thrown that notebook."
Klaus winced. "Sorry."
Prime then turned to Luther. "Also, Luther, we can avoid you becoming half man, half... uh, was it ape?"
Luther shot her a deadpan look. "It's a serious question, Luther!" Prime grinned, but Luther just ignored her.
Ben looked around at all of them. "We just need to work together, practice our powers, and we'll save the world from The Handler. We've got this."
"Yeah," Prime said, nodding. "The eight of us—this time, we're stronger than ever. We may have come from strange circumstances, growing up in a dysfunctional family, but now we have the answers. And we're not going to let the same mistakes happen again. We're family, and we'll do this together."
"To our crazy, dysfunctional, but wonderful family!" Klaus shouted, raising his cup of soda.
"To the Umbrella Academy!" everyone chorused in unison, their spirits lifted for the challenge ahead.
