chapter twenty four
"I hate to be the one to say this," Luther began, "but everyone needs to prepare." He looked around the room, his eyes settling on each of his siblings.
"For what?" Diego asked angrily,
"To do whatever it takes to stop Vanya," Prime responded with a groan. She wished Luther was able to hear here, because she had so many colorful words to shout at him. He was, however, cut short because Allison quickly slapped Luther with her notepad, seemingly upset, "I— We may not have a choice," Luther retorted, raising his hands defensively and attempting to defend himself.
"I swear to god Luther," Prime exclaimed loudly, "If I could, I'd smash two bowling balls on your thick skull right now." She paused, still clearly upset, "If you hadn't locked her in that damn vault, we wouldn't be in this situation!"
Ben chuckled at her words, "You really need to remember they can't hear you Prime." Prime grumbled and continued cursing under her breath, obviously still upset with the situation.
"You are incredibly lucky right now that you can't hear Prime," Klaus said, "because she is saying some things to you Luther, and they are brutal." He mumbled this quietly but still loud enough for everyone to hear, as he opened a newspaper without even looking up.
"Bullshit," Diego chimed in, "There's always options.:
"Yeah, like what?" Five said, looking up at Diego
"Look," Luther said, standing up and looking around at everyone, "whatever we decide, we need to find Vanya. And fast, okay? She could be anywhere" He emphasized the importance of this task
Prime leaped off the bowling stand and stood behind Klaus as he turned the page of the newspaper. "Well, would you look at that, brother dearest," she called, her finger pointed toward the article that caught Klaus's attention.
"Uhhh..." Klaus stuttered as he slowly turned the page of the newspaper, shaking it. "Or... here," he proceeded, holding the newspaper up and facing the others, "look at this."
"That's right," Diego responded confidently, "her concert is tonight."
"Hello," a worker of the bowling alley said as he approached, his manager presumably having sent him over to tell the group off. "I hate to intrude, but my manager says if you're not gonna bowl, you gotta leave." He added, while a shoe counter was in full view of Prime, as the manager slammed shoes on the table.
"Whose turn is it?" Diego asked exasperatedly, as if he were tired of something. Luther let out a grunt in response; he picked up a bowling ball and threw it so fast that it flew to another lane.
Allison promptly started writing on a small sheet of paper and when she was done, she raised it. "She's our sister" was written on it.
"We're the only ones capable of stopping this," Luther proclaimed firmly, emphasizing the importance of their objective, "We have a responsibility to Dad."
"To Dad? No, I've heard enough about— Luther cut him off," He sacrificed everything to bring us back together"
"Oh, yeah?" Diego retaliated, evidently still upset with Luther. "Just a moment ago, you hated him and even called Prime a liar." He continued.
"I— you," Luther seethed, "you don't even know how horrible I feel about that, Diego."
"Sure," Diego said sarcastically, "now you think it?" He added, walking up to Luther, clearly outraged by his attempts to make amends.
Meanwhile, Diego and Luther were silently engaged in a heated staring contest, their glares locked on each other. Prime tilted her head and frowned. "Oh man," she added, "I just realized my ashes are buried in the rubble of the house." Klaus and Ben glanced at her with baffled expressions on their faces, seemingly unsure of what to say in response.
"I'm with Luther on this one," Five spoke up. "We can't give her a chance to fight back. There are billions of lives at stake. We're past trying to save just one."
Ben and Prime shared looks, and then they turned to Klaus, who was the next to speak. "Hey, you know, guys, uh maybe I could help," he said hesitatingly and a bit awkwardly.
Luther and Five rolled their eyes, indicating their impatience with Klaus. "Now's not the time," Luther said, irritated
Diego narrowed his eyes and spoke up in defense of Klaus. "No, let him finish." Luther was surprised by Diego's defense of Klaus. "He saved my life today," Diego added, giving Klaus the chance to continue sharing whatever it was that he had planned to say.
"Really?" Ben and Prime said simultaneously
"Is that true?" asked Luther and Ben and Prime; they all stared at Klaus with varying levels of surprise. "Yeah, yeah, I did take credit for it," he admitted, but he added, "In fact, the real heroes were Ben and Prime."
"Today," Klaus spoke, and added, "Listen. Today, he punched me in the face." He continued, "And at the house earlier," he said, referring to the incident that took place earlier in the day, "he and Prime were the ones who saved Diego's and my life, not me."
"You are unbelievable, Klaus," Luther added. He was clearly struggling to believe what Klaus had said, and it showed in his voice and his expression.
"You want proof?" Klaus asked, walking over to the bowling ball display. "All right," he conceded, "I'll give you proof." He picked up a bowling ball and lifted it, then Ben lifted his hands, prepared to catch it. "All right, it's showtime, baby," Klaus announced as he threw the ball with all his strength and precision. However, it sailed straight through Ben instead of hitting him and hitting the ground.
Prime walked over to Luther and raised her fist, punching him as he grunted and nearly fell from the punch.
"YES!" Prime shouted, a mixture of relief and jubilation evident in her voice. "IT WORKED!" She proclaimed triumphantly, raising a fist in the air, "TAKE THAT, ASSHOLE!" She added to her celebratory outburst, clearly glad to be free of the nagging feeling of wanting to hit Luther.
"Wha-What the fuck was that?" Luther asked, utterly puzzled. He rubbed his cheek, clearly feeling the pain of the punch as he tried to process his disbelief.
"That was Prime punching you," Klaus responded, grinning ear-to-ear. "And you should be grateful she only did that, or else it may have been something far worse." Luther glared at him, clearly upset with his newfound confidence. "You know," he said, his smile fading, "I liked you a lot better before you got laid."
Prime snorted in amusement as everyone went silent and the mood shifted. She looked over at Allison and then Klaus, who quickly realized that the comment he made was inappropriate. "Which was a complete..." he muttered to himself but didn't finish his sentiment, as he was still processing the fallout of the situation. "It wasn't his fault," he added, "because he was ridiculously high, right? And the girl, she thought he was a furry..."
Stop!" Luther shouted, clearly embarrassed by the situation.
Klaus then said, "Okay," while scratching his head and turning away.
Prime looked over at Luther who had also turned his head to look at Allison, who was walking away. He then followed her, and he was heard saying, "Allison, wait."
"Oh, this is so goooood!" Prime sang, clearly enjoying the spectacle of her brother, who was now walking in a hurried and dejected fashion in the direction of Allison, as if he were a little puppy who had just been scolded.
"Excuse me!" a woman spoke politely. "It's my son Kenny's birthday today, and uh..." she paused, appearing to struggle to find the right words. "Wouldn't your son be happier playing with kids his own age? Assuming that's okay with you two dads." Prime gave a sarcastic snort, while Klaus looked up, then turned to Five; he seemed to want to know what their response should be to the woman's request.
"I would rather chew off my own foot," Five responded forcefully to the woman, indicating his dislike for the idea she has proposed.
"Wow, Five; so rude," Prime said sarcastically as she laugh and Ben joined in the laughing after Five abruptly exited the scene.
Meanwhile, Diego addressed Klaus directly when he raised a bowling ball and claimed: "If I was going to date a man, you'd be the last man I would date" as he looked at him.
"Aw man! Not an image I want in my head!" Prime responded. She leaned her face on Ben's chest, clearly overwhelmed by the thought of the hypothetical scenario that Diego had just mentioned.
You'd be lucky to get me," Klaus said, his lips curling into a smug, mocking smile as he threw the bowling ball down the lane.
Prime's attention immediately turned to find Five, and she expressed her mild annoyance at his absence. "Oh for fuck's sake—Klaus, Five vanished again," she said, her tone suggesting that this was not a new occurrence.
Klaus turned, incredulous. "Are you for real?!" he exclaimed.
Diego shifted his gaze upward as he spoke. "What happened?"
"Prime said Five left again," Klaus repeated to Diego.
Diego groaned in disbelief. "God damn that boy" he exclaimed, shaking his head as he looked around for some clue in regards to where Five had gone off to.
"All right, where's Five? " Allison and Luther asked, approaching the group.
"He left," Diego replied.
"Oh for the love of—Where'd he go?' Luther retorted, expressing his exasperation with this recurring issue of Five disappearing without notice.
"Didn't tell us," Klaus spoke, joining the others to provide context to the situation. He had just thrown another bowling ball, and he was likely to add more details once he had finished doing that, "Prime just said he vanished," he added.
Luther let out a sigh. "Well, we're not waiting around for him. The concert starts in 30 minutes," he stated.
"All right; so what's the plan?" Diego questioned, glancing around at the group. His eyes settled on Luther, who he seemed to believe should provide the answer to the question.
"Well, I think that uh...We go to the Icarus Theater" Luther began answering Diego's question
Prime groaned and covered her face. Meanwhile, Diego let out a frustrated grunt. "That's a location, not a plan," he exclaimed. "What? Is that all you've got? Look, you wanna be Number One, fine," he went on, addressing Luther once again, "but you're gonna have to get us on the same page, because right now, we're all over the place."
"You're right; we need a plan," Luther affirmed, appearing to have a newfound sense of purpose and resolve.
Suddenly, a group of people wearing gas masks came in, bearing what appeared to be firearms.
"Uh, Klaus," Ben and Prime said simultaneously, each one pointing and signaling to him about the weapons that the masked assailants were brandishing. Klaus cursed and took cover, following his siblings as they went to find safe areas to conceal themselves.
"Who the hell are these guys?" Diego shouted, his voice filled with an air of indignation and hostility in response to the sudden appearance of the armed men.
"Maybe they're here for Kenny's birthday!" Klaus shouted as he covered his ears, unable to handle the cacophonous noise emanating from the guns.
"No, I'm pretty sure they're here for us!" Luther exclaimed, in response to his sibling's previous remark about the gunmen being there for Kenny. Diego promptly stood up and threw one of his knives at one of the shooters. The projectile collided with the individual, causing them to stumble backward and strike a power panel with their backs. Luther proceeded to toss a bowling ball at the gunmen, with the same level of precision and momentum that Diego had demonstrated with his blade.
Prime looked at Klaus in disbelief as he threw the cake that had been provided for Kenny's celebration, and it took down one of the assailants. "No way that actually worked," she exclaimed, letting out a laugh.
Ben looked puzzled, seeming to be unable to comprehend the sheer unlikelihood of the situation that just occurred. "Only Klaus could manage that," he replied, still finding it unbelievable.
Klaus, however, wasn't done yet. Seeing Allison, he called out to her, "They are blocking the exit!"
"So, what's the plan now, Luther?" Diego yelled from his hiding spot, showing skepticism about the prospects of a viable solution.
Allison tapped Klaus, pointing to the lanes, and Luther quickly understood when he recognized what she was inferring: "The lanes! Let's go!"
They all quickly got up and ran together, entering the lanes and climbing underneath them. The gunmen continued to fire their weapons, and the only thing that was happening was the potential for the group members to get hit.
Ben and Prime appeared behind them, still running, as the attackers continued to fire their guns. "Ugh, I hate being useless," Prime yelled out in frustration.
Ben chimed in, nodding his head in agreement with Prime's statement. "Yeah, tell me about it, " he replied, showing his understanding of the situation.
...
They eventually arrived at the theater, and they ran up the stairs. However, Allison suddenly came to a halt, pulling out her notepad that already had a note written on it. "I need to go alone," was the message on the paper.
"Wha!" Luther quickly argued, "I can't let you go in there alone!" His statement reflected his concern and apprehension about Allison heading into the situation by herself.
Diego scoffed in disbelief, and yelled out, "You hear the music? It's started!"
In response to this, Luther replied with annoyance and exasperation in his voice, "Do you honestly think she's gonna listen? After everything that's happened?" His annoyance was evident in his tone and mannerisms.
"Yeah, after you locked her inside that vault...we don't have time for this," Klaus repeated her words to the others, seemingly in an attempt to emphasize the validity.
"Okay," Luther nodded, acknowledging that he was willing to let Allison proceed in her plan.
Diego posed a query, "You're using her as a distraction, aren't you?" He spoke directly to Luther
"Our best chance to incapacitate Vanya" Prime's face fell at Luther's statement; she knew perfectly well that he was right. Allison was not in any shape to engage in demanding physical activity, let alone combat of any kind.
"I hate Luther, but he's got a point, " Prime stated, and Klaus repeated the same thing except with the exception of one specific detail: he did not include the part about her disliking her twin brother.
"So what's the plan?" Klaus asked.
Luther swiftly turned to face him, with a firm rebuttal, "You wait out front."
Prime, upon hearing this, slammed the back of her head against the wall in frustration multiple times. "For the love of God, Luther," was the refrain that she repeated each time she took her head off the wall, seemingly unable to comprehend the logic behind some of Luther's strategies.
"Yeah, you're the lookout," Luther affirmed, once again giving a concise direction. He then set off, leaving Diego.
"The lookout?!" Klaus exclaimed, clearly frustrated by Luther's directive.
Prime joined the fray immediately, interjecting with her own statement. "Even after I punched his face?!" she shouted, her tone conveying that she felt her efforts had not been properly acknowledged.
Ben responded to the situation by remaining on the sidelines, merely observing the exchange between the others.
Klaus's departure from the group was announced by his words, "I'm hungry." As he walked out of the room, Ben and Prime accompanied him, ensuring that they remained nearby and following his moves.
Prime expressed her concern for the situation involving Klaus and his designated role as lookout, asking him, "Lookout, bro, not going to do it?"
In response to his sister's words, he merely offered a terse reply, grumbling, "Yeah, well, they clearly don't need me."
Prime looked at him with a frown of frustration, then shrugged it off, and Ben offered a small gesture of reassurance and comfort by patting her back," It's fine"
Prime reluctantly accepted the situation that she found herself in, uttering a single word, "I guess," as she leaned against the side of the food truck with Ben. She remained there as Klaus obtained their meal, showing a level of resignation as she waited for him.
Klaus, upon taking a closer look at his food, immediately recognized a problem with it: "I didn't ask for cilantro."
Prime was similarly observing the situation around her, and she heard some sort of noise. Ben, beside her, appeared to have heard something as well, and the two of them simultaneously looked in the direction of the noise's origin.
"Do you hear gunfire?" Ben heard a gunfire, and he turned to check out the origin of the gunfire. He swiftly walked away from Klaus, and Prime followed him.
Prime spotted the cha-cha woman, and she exclaimed, "Klaus, it's cha-cha!" upon recognizing the individual.
Klaus reacted to the sudden appearance of the cha-cha woman by uttering a shocked expression, "Oh, sh*t!"
He quickly took cover of the food truck, with Prime and Ben following suit. Prime, however, was confused, asking, "Why are Ben and I hiding?"
Ben subsequently glanced in her direction and seemed to suddenly recall the obvious fact that he and Prime were dead and ghost.
"This is it mofo! Go time! Go time!" Klaus said running to the theatre.
Ben, however, raised a point of concern, asking, "Wait, what about the gunfire?" Prime followed her Klaus lead, joining him as the three of them charged towards the theater.
Klaus shouted, "Come on! We are the damn lookouts!" His tone and voice were imbued with a level of conviction and vigor.
Prime quickly retorted, "No sh*t I said that!" with a dismissive expression on her face.
The trio was rapidly closing the distance, and Klaus proceeded to leap into the theater and announced with a shout, "Guys, it's cha-cha! She's out—"
However, before he even managed to finish delivering his sentence, Luther called out for him to seek cover, shouting, "Klaus! Get down!!"
Prime looked on in disbelief, and she expressed her anger by uttering these words, "Are you shitting me?" She witnessed Five perform the feat of spatial jumping and landing on one specific shooter, who he proceeded to shoot while atop the individual. She also saw Five subsequently shoot the other shooters as well.
Prime saw Klaus's clenched fists, which had suddenly been illuminated with an otherworldly glow, and she quickly alerted Ben's attention to this fact. She shouted, "Benny, look!" to direct her brother's gaze towards this new addition to the scene that they were observing.
Prime swiftly acted to harness the power granted by this new phenomenon; she pulled the gunmen towards Ben using her telekinesis before instructing him, "Benny, lift your shirt!"
He complied with her command, and the Eldritch Tentacles subsequently emerged from his stomach. The tendrils then attempted to seize the armed men, who were being guided towards him.
Diego, Allison, and Luther who were still hiding watched the unfolding spectacle with a sense of amazement as they bore witness to the emergence of Klaus's capabilities, which permitted their deceased siblings, namely Prime and Ben, to exercise their respective abilities talents.
Prime swiftly took note of the action that Ben enacted on his respective gunmen, and upon understanding that a similar maneuver was required for the gunmen who were lurking in the vicinity of Allison and Luther, she immediately sprinted towards the two individuals in question and proceeded to launch her flame at them, targeting the two gunmen who had attempted to sneak up on her siblings while their attention was otherwise occupied," Don't turn your backs and let your guard down!!" Prime then emitted a shout as her searing flames engulfed the two assailants, who were soon reduced to ash.
"Oh, my god" Luther said finally speaking up
"Ben, Prime!" Luther cried out in disbelief, stunned and unable to comprehend the sight of his deceased siblings before him, who were now apparently somewhat visible, thanks to Klaus' powers.
"Yeah" Prime continued, "and if you ever underestimate Klaus again," she said, as she ran past Luther and Allison once more, towards Ben," Know he has potential to summon us!" Prime shouted as she then propelled additional gunmen towards Ben whom she knew would successfully put them all to an end, thus securing the final gunmen.
Klaus lowered his hands, once Prime and Ben had vanished from the other individuals' perspectives. He then felt a jolt of prideful satisfaction and declared loudly, "Now who's the lookout?"
Prime's tone was encouraging and complimentary when she uttered the words, "Good job, Klaus!"
She then turned her attention to Ben, and she teased him with these words, "Been a while, Benny?"
Ben responded by rolling his eyes and expressing his sentiments regarding the supernatural power by saying, "Yeah, I don't miss it one bit."
Prime's expression softened as she looked at Ben, allowing a gentle smile to spread across her face. She then proceeded to express her sentiments pertaining to the successful execution and coordination of their previously displayed powers, saying, "Awh, but I think we did a good job."
Ben, in an attempt to conceal the contents of this romantic exchange from Klaus' hearing, lowered his voice and whispered, "I'd kiss you right now, but Klaus would probably hate us." Upon receiving the playful gesture of verbal intimacy, Prime responded accordingly, opting to reciprocate this subtle advance with a playful push of Ben's arm.
Prime turned back as she was delighted as she observed the outcome of their efforts together, and she had felt immense pride when she witnessed the successful deployment of their powers. Her enjoyment had, however, been briefly extinguished as she heard the distinctive violin melodies produced by Vanya.
She consequently turned around, and she watched with apprehension as her sister's suit and violin underwent a transformation, becoming illuminated with a striking white hue. The dust from the broken ceiling began to rain down, signaling imminent danger ahead.
Luther was the first to become aware of Diego's recent departure, and he turned and inquired about this situation. He began with the words, "Oh, welcome back, where were you?"
Diego responded to Luther's query regarding his recent actions and whereabouts by simply stating, "Went to handle Cha-cha," implying that he had departed in order to take care of this matter personally.
Diego then looked at Vanya on stage, "So, how do you wanna end this thing?"
Luther spoke up with confidence, " Let's surround her, we'll come at her from all angles
Klaus was less optimistic, "It's a suicide mission," he said.
Five was more hopeful, "Yeah, but one of us could get through. It's the only chance we've got."
"Are we all in?" All of them nodded," All right"
Luther showed leadership as he took charge. " There's no time to hesitate,Allison," he said firmly, "If she finishes that concert, the world will go up in flames. We have to stop her no matter what," He added.
"You know, if I had the chance earlier, I should have given a little punch right to the kisser," Prime grumbled
"We were a little preoccupied for punching faces Prime" Ben teased
"Man, being dead sucks" She mumbled and he nodded
Her and Ben witnessed the beginning of their brothers' plan as they bravely rushed into position as Allision stood in place. Prime had a clear view of the situation as her brothers ran to Vanya but were suddenly lifted into the air by a blinding white light.
Allision seized her opportunity as she quietly slipped behind Vanya and raised her gun. Prime sensed Allision's intentions as she took aim and fired the gun near Vanya's ear, possibly in an attempt to startle her.
As the boys stumbled to the ground, Prime watched in shock as Vanya let out a white beam of light that pierced through the theater's roof and into the night sky.
Prime's watched in horror as she followed the beam of light as it flew towards the moon. She reached for Ben, "Benny, I think we have a problem," she said, her voice filled with worry as she pointed towards the moon.
"Klaus!" Ben called out, trying to get his brother's attention. Klaus looked over at both of them with uncertainty as Ben and Prime both pointed into the sky, towards the moon.
The moon had began to crack, sending the three of them into a brief state of panic.
Klaus was able to break through the moment of shock as he got everyone else's attention, "Uh, guys?" he said, sounding somewhat alarmed as he pointed towards the sky, "Do you see that big moon rock that's coming towards us?" he added, calling out the danger.
uther seemed equally alarmed by the emerging threat as he took a deep breath, releasing it slowly, "That's not good," he said, stating the obvious.
Klaus seemed resigned to his fate as he realized the dire situation, "So, this is it, huh?" He held his dog tags, which perhaps served as a small comfort in this situation. "So much for saving the world," he said with a sigh, perhaps coming to terms with his imminent death.
Diego displayed his pessimistic side as he looked down, possibly feeling like a failure in this situation, "If only Sir Reginald could see us right now, huh?" he said with sarcasm, "The Umbrella Academy, a total failure," he added as he seemed to admit it to himself.
Luther's emotional side showed through as he spoke, "At least we're together at the end. As a family," he said quietly, offering a small comfort amongst the sadness and fear.
Ben put an arm over my shoulder," I know we are dead, but I don't want them to be" I sobbed to Ben as he nodded," Yeah, but— Ben was cut off as Five spoke," This doesn't have to be the end"
"What? What are you saying, Five?" Luther turned as we all looked at him
Ben put a comforting arm around Prime's shoulder, trying to provide a sense of comfort for himself as much as for her as the deceased pair of them watched their siblings about to be faced with certain death, "I know we're dead, but I don't want them to be," Prime said sadly.
Five as he spoke up, "This doesn't have to be the end," he said confidently, offering a glimmer of hope amidst the darkness.
Five displayed his confident and decisive side as he declared that he had a plan.
"I think I have a way outta here", he said firmly. The boys seemed skeptical, as they were all in a state of despair having already given up. Five pushed back against their pessimism, firmly stating, "But you gotta trust me on this."
Diego wanted to know the full details, "What's your idea, then?" he asked
Five displayed his expertise as he provided a solution that could save them all.
"We use my ability to time travel," Five outlined his plan.
Luther was surprised by the revelation as he walked up to Five. "You can do that?" he asked, sounding somewhat doubtful.
Five came clean about his uncertainty, "I don't know. I've never tried it before," he admitted.
Diego didn't seem all that put off by the prospect as the threat of death loomed. "What's the worst that can happen?" he said, brushing off the potential risk.
Five showed off his witty side as he described the absurdity of his own situation, "You're lookin' at it. A 58-year-old man inside a child's body, so there's that"
Diego went along with the plan, "Oh, what the hell? I'm in."
Klaus nodded," Yeah, whatever I'm in"
"Me too" Luther turned to Allision holding Vanya," Allison?" she nodded
Luther reached over to Klaus patting him," What about Ben and Prime?" he asked, seemingly looking for their approval as well.
Prime's was straightforward and to the point as he confirmed his intentions. "Fuck yeah," he said confidently.
Ben just nodded quietly to express his own agreement without having to speak.
Klaus snickered," Great, yeah, their in"
Five gave instructions with urgency as he wanted to act quickly in order to succeed, "Okay, great. Luther, grab Vanya," he said, assigning a task to be done immediately.
Luther showed that he was considering the potential risks of their plan as he voiced his reservations, "Wait, should we be taking her? I mean, if she's the cause of the apocalypse. Isn't that like taking the bomb with us?" he asked, while lifting their unconscious sister in his arms.
Five seemed to have a solution and a solid reason for taking Vanya with them, "The apocalypse will always happen and Vanya will always be the cause unless we take her with us and fix her" he said, explaining his logic.
The group seemed equally intrigued and scared as they took each other's hands and a spatial portal appeared overhead. They experienced some sudden force as they were lowered towards the portal.
Luther shouted out with excitement and optimism, " Ah! It's working!!"
Five called out to prepare them for what's to come ahead. "Hold on!! It's gonna get messy," he warned.
Prime looked over at the others as they slowly transformed into their younger selves, and she and Ben also became younger.
The portal lowered them into a space that was pure whiteness as a brief flash seemingly transported them to.
