chapter twenty five

When Prime slowly opened her eyes and her vision began to clear, she found herself surrounded by her childhood bedroom once more. It was as though she had been transported back in time, everything in its place as it had always been.

With a gasp, she sat up on the bed, slowly swinging her feet onto the floor. Her mind raced as she took in the scenery, trying desperately to make sense of the situation. It had to be a dream. A hallucination. Something. This couldn't possibly be real.

"What the hell?" Prime exclaimed, glancing around with disbelief and confusion as her throat caught. Her heart raced as she looked around her surroundings, her brain desperately failing to comprehend the situation she found herself in.

Prime slowly walked around her room, taking in the familiar surroundings and reliving the memories attached to them. This couldn't be real. She must have died and gone to heaven. Or...was this hell?

But no. No, no. This can't be hell. Prime frowned as she remembered her life, and everything that she had done. It wasn't perfect, not by any means.

Prime took a deep, steadying breath and slowly walked to her bedroom door, putting her hand on the knob. When she was able to touch it and turn it, she frowned. It was real.

She stepped out into the hallway and looked at her siblings' rooms, all their doors still closed. She made her way to Vanya's room first and knocked on the door, but didn't get a response. Opening the door slowly, she saw her sleeping peacefully in her bed. Without a sound, Prime closed the door behind her and headed over to the bed.

Prime took another breath and tried to keep calm, muttering to herself, "Okay, slowly and carefully." She reached forward and lightly shook her sister, Vanya. Although Vanya didn't respond right away, with persistent shaking, Prime finally heard tired groans coming from her sister," Vanya," she repeated, getting louder, trying to wake her up.

"V, get up," Prime said, speaking louder this time as Vanya slowly turned over and opened her eyes, rubbing them as she sat up. Prime remained silent, waiting for anything, not wanting to bombard her with questions while she was still dazed and had the just-waking-up feeling.

Vanya's eyes went wide as she turned her head to Prime, her mouth going wide before she said, "P-Prime?! Wait this is a dream, yes a dr..."

"V, it's not a dream, or at least I hope it's not," Prime said.

"It would be a very realistic one," Vanya murmured to herself as she reached for Prime, whose laughter echoed through the room.

"Maybe," Prime replied, trying to keep things lighthearted with the tension that was hanging thick in the air.

"but I..." Vanya stopped for a moment, considering what she remembered.

Vanya gasped as she pulled away from Prime, hugging herself. "I... I destroyed the home, I was angry, I... I..." She trailed off, unable to finish her thought as panic swelled inside her.

Prime's hands rested softly on her shoulders and she repeated, "Calm down, V, breath in and out, slowly, in and out," which she did, taking in a deep, shaky breath before exhaling.

Prime continued, "V, I want you to believe me, okay?" When Vanya nodded, Prime sighed. "Yea, you did destroy the house, but none of us blames you, honestly." Prime sighed once more, her eyes softening a bit. "It's Luther's fault for locking you up," she stated, her anger apparent despite her attempt to remain calm and collected. "If all of us are here," she continued, "I am going to sock Luther so hard that he'll break his nose."

Vanya looked at Prime with confusion as she asked, "Where we really are? All of us?" Her expression was one of disbelief, as she was still finding it hard to wrap her mind around their current situation.

Prime scratched her cheek, and as she tried to recall her words, her eyes widened as something struck her. "Well, it's a long story," she finally said, pausing to collect herself before continuing. "Five time travelled with all of us," she explained, her words quick and rushed as she tried to get the information out there before the thought escaped her mind. "Somehow we went back in time," she said, "and even our bodies changed to our younger selves...and somehow I am ali—" she then gasped, before stopping herself again, her eyes widening with an even deeper realization.

"What's wrong?" Vanya asked nervously, seeing her sister's reaction and realizing, just as she was about to, that there was even more to the situation than she had previously thought.

"If I'm alive, that means Ben," Prime said with a smile on her face. Vanya's jaw dropped as she realized what her sister was implying, all her hopes and aspirations coming true.

Prime grabbed Vanya's wrist and pulled her as they ran out of her room, rushing down to Ben's room.

"Please god have mercy and please make him be here," Prime prayed, her voice pleading, as Vanya also agreed, her eyes locked onto the door and Ben's room with growing hope.

Prime took a deep breath as she slowly opened the door and they both peeked in. Prime's prayers were answered as she saw Ben asleep in his bed, and she turned to Vanya once more. "Please tell me you see him too," she whispered, wanting to make sure that she could trust her own eyes.

Vanya smiled and nodded, the relief and happiness filling her at the sight of her brother.

Prime couldn't contain her excitement any longer and suddenly rushed over to Ben's bed, jumping onto it as she threw herself onto him. Her sudden action caused Ben to stir, but he quickly regained his bearings as he opened his eyes and looked up at Prime.

"What— Wha—" he started to say in pain, his eyes widening at the sight of a young Prime.

Prime's euphoria flooded over her as she saw Ben awake, and she leaned forward to hug him, "Benny!" she cried out excitedly, bringing him into a tight hug.

"What is go— Prime?" Ben said, still slightly confused and disoriented from just having woken up. Prime pulled back from the hug and pointed to Vanya, still standing nearby.

"It seems like we are both alive, and V can confirm it," she explained, Vanya waving nervously back.

Ben shot up suddenly, notching Vanya and that caused Prime to fall off the bed, making a loud thud. "Vanya!"

"Okay, ow," Prime said, painfully letting out, rubbing the back of her head as Vanya kneeled down to help her up.

"Oh my god! They are here!" someone shouted from outside.

Ben, Prime, and Vanya suddenly turned to meet Allison, Luther, Klaus, and Diego who were all wearing pajamas just like the three of them.

"Oh, hello there, guys," Prime said as she raised her hand and waved them in their general direction. Getting off the floor, she received assistance from both Ben and Vanya, as he apologized for accidentally knocking her over.

"You guys can see little Ben and Prime, right?" Klaus asked, pointing to both of them.

"Yes, Klaus, we can," Prime screamed as she noticed Five sitting on Ben's trunk in the corner of the room. He had apparently just spatial jumped into the room.

"God damn it Five! I hate you right now," Prime exclaimed, placing her hand over her chest as her heart beat rapidly.

Five smirked proudly as he saw his sister's reaction, seemingly proud of having scared her.

"Vanya," Allison said in a slow and steady voice as she walked over to her.

"Hey, Allison, I—" Vanya started to say, but before she could get a word out, Allison pulled her into a hug.

Prime smiled as she saw Vanya and noticed her looking back at her. She mouthed, "So sweet," and then Vanya made a face at her and chuckled.

Prime then turned toward Diego, who was just staring back and forth between Ben and her. The two that were previously dead were alive in that moment, and Diego seemed to snap back into reality when he saw them," " Diego, take a picture it last longer." Prime said playfully

"You two are here, alive, right now," he said.

Ben and Prime shared a glance and smiled at each other.

"Yeah, in the flesh," Prime replied.

Ben then nodded and sighed. "Yeah, but Prime almost killed me earlier by jumping on me when I was asleep."

"Pft, you'll live," Prime scoffed. "I always did that when we were younger. I mean, when we were younger in the past? Um, I hate this," Prime groaned, her frustrations evident. They had all been transported back to the past; one moment they were adults in their 30s, the next they were children again.

"Yeah, time travel does that to you," Five acknowledged as he walked over to their group," For now," he suggested, "why don't we move our meeting to another place? This room isn't meant for so many people. Don't worry, the old man, Mom, and Pogo aren't home. They left to who knows where" He concluded before spatial jumping away.

"Since when did he start pulling the cards here?" Luther asked as they all shrugged it off.

"Pyjama' meeting!" Klaus cheered, then he ran out of the room, dragging Ben and Diego along with him.

Luther stood there awkwardly, not really sure how to face Vanya and Prime given the situation. His gaze seemed to avoid them entirely.

Prime walked over to him and looked up at him as he finally turned to face her. She offered him a smile, and he tried to return the gesture with an uncomfortable and forced smile as she reached out to place her hands on his head.

But Prime slammed her head on his nose, causing him to scream out in pain as he fell to the ground, groaning, "Prime!" Allison scolded, and she shook her head, turning to face her.

Prime huffed in response, then she glared at her twin brother, seemingly uncaring if she had broken his nose or not.

"There will be more for that," she stated, with a hint of spite in her tone. "For now, why don't we head to the living room, to the others?" She said as she stepped over Luther on the ground, followed by the two girls.

Prime seemed to be unfazed by her brother's injury, knowing that he apparently deserved it.

"He'll be down, let him take in that hit," she stated, her tone betraying a certain level of satisfaction as she left him on the ground. Her sisters followed after her, sharing a look, but none of them had the courage to try and stop her.

"I think that was a little much, P," Vanya said in between a sigh and a chuckle.

Prime laughed, seemingly uncaring. "Nah, he deserved it," she said, her smug grin showing that she had no regrets, "For many counts," she added, a hint of threat and malice underlying her tone," I won't damage his face," she declared to Allison as she walked backward but turned to forward again as they reached the stairs, her smile becoming slightly unnerving.

"Don't worry, he deserves every bit of it," Allison affirmed with a smile on her face. Vanya and Prime laughed in response, seemingly agreeing with her.

The girls eventually reached the living room, after having walked for a little while, and the boys, excluding Luther, were there. Prime walked over to the couch and sat between Klaus and Ben. She was humming to herself, her expression showing that she had nothing on her mind other than satisfaction for her actions against Luther.

"Why are you humming? Nothing good ever comes out of you humming," Diego said, his tone clearly disapproving of the sound.

Allison and Vanya joined him on the other couch, sitting across from Prime, Klaus, and Ben. They were close enough to them that it would practically be hard to miss any of the conversation that was taking place.

"Why is your head red, Prime?" asked Ben, his concern on his face.

Prime grimaced, acknowledging the mark. "Yeah, should have used my fist," she mumbled, seemingly annoyed at herself, "Luther," was her only response as Ben became even more confused but decided not to pry any further, at best giving a small chuckle and shaking his head.

Five, who was sitting in a lone chair, sighed as if he was tired of having to keep track of everyone.

"Where is Luther?" he asked. Just as he finished speaking, Luther walked into the room rubbing his red nose, indicating that he had just returned from an incident with Prime.

"I'm here," he said painfully, still having a somewhat hard time talking and clearly in pain.

"What happened to you?" Diego asked, trying to hold back his laughter in the face of Luther's obviously red, injured, and irritated nose.

Luther glared at his sister and seethed. "Prime happened," he said, clearly holding a grudge against her and trying to hide his pain.

Prime was not phased in the slightest by whatever reaction her brother was giving her. "Oh definitely, and there will be more in store for it," she asserted, seemingly threatening her twin.

"Oh, great." Luther rolled his eyes, making his disapproval and annoyance at the situation perfectly clear.

"Right, okay," Five said, his urgency clear as he wanted to discuss something important.

"Vanya, what do you remember?" he asked, taking them by surprise with how blunt and direct his approach was.

All of them looked at Five, unsure of how to react to his abruptness.

"I remember destroying the house and going to my concert," Vanya said hesitantly, looking uncomfortable and unsure of herself. She quickly finished her sentence as she continued, "I played for a while, and then Allison came, but everything after that is blank," she said, now speaking in a softer tone.

There was an ominous silence as Prime, Allison, and the rest of the boys waited to see if more would come back to her.

"That much huh?" Klaus said, leaning back on the couch with a slight smirk on his face, "You know about your powers," he continued, his tone implying a sense of confirmation that they were starting to piece together the reality.

Prime let out a sigh of exhaustion, her annoyance and the seriousness of the situation getting to her.

"Right," says Five, "so how do you want to do this?" he asked, now taking the lead in trying to understand their situation.

"Hey, no," Prime said, shutting down any attempts at walking on eggshells around Vanya and protecting her at all costs just because she had been out of it, "Whatever happens from now on," she continued her statement, "We say what we have to say. No excluding her," she said, standing up for Vanya as she dismissed her brothers and defended her sister's rightful place in the conversation.

"Yes, that's true," Five affirmed, once again taking a step toward leading the conversation.

"And right now," he continued, addressing what Prime had said and shifting the focus back to what was really important, "We have one enemy we need to take down."

"Don't forget Dad," Luther added, bringing the topic of their father back into the equation.

Diego rolled his eyes, making a noise that indicated his fatigue with the topic. "Dad again," he said irritably. Their dad was clearly still a sore point for all of them, and the mere mention of his existence brought about mixed emotions on the part of all the siblings.

"No, he's right," Prime reluctantly agreed with Luther, even though she had a particular hatred toward her twin brother.

She expanded on his point, explaining that not only was their father alive but also that they now had to consider the potential of having to convince him to allow Vanya to use her powers once she had gained a full understanding of her new abilities.

"You do understand, right, Vanya?" Diego asked her, and she nodded in response.

Vanya then expanded upon his question by stating that, despite her still being new to and understanding her newfound powers, she would make sure not to harm anybody with them either intentionally or unintentionally.

Her downcast gaze and frown indicated the level of her discomfort with the subject and just how much she wished the situation could be avoided.

She had just wanted to become a popular musician and performer, not have to deal with the burden of otherworldly powers.

"Don't sweat it, V - everyone here has a power that can hurt someone, physically or emotionally." Prime added the last part since Allison had given her a glance.

"I know what you mean - take a look at Klaus," Prime nodded her head to him. "He managed to summon both Ben and me when we were dead, and made us use our powers. I'm starting to think that we all have yet to unlock our full potential."

"Wait a second, so you guys really saved me?" Diego requested

Both of them nodded in agreement, but then Prime interjected, "It was actually Ben who pulled you, not me - I pulled Klaus" she clarified.

"I have a strong feeling that the old man always desired this outcome." Five muttered as he reclined his chair and tilted his head back.

Prime snorted as she retorted with, "I agree - he had a rather dreadful approach to conveying his vision to us."

"What are you implying ? Do you have further knowledge of the matter ?" Luther inquired as he folded his arms across his chest and leaned back.

Prime leaned forward as she grumbled, "Don't give me that look - I didn't have the opportunity to say it since, well, one - you were aggressively chastising me at the bar, and also, two - I perished, so I couldn't express my thoughts, and on top of that, we were busy attempting to prevent the world's extinction - so, yeah, we were pretty distracted."

Prime then hissed as she turned her gaze towards Vanya, who cringed as soon as she mentioned her death. She felt remorseful since she was aware that it was a sensitive topic and had simply shouted it without regard for her feelings.

"Look, V, let's just put it in the past, because let's be real - if things hadn't happened the way they did, we wouldn't be back here, and the best part is that this time, Ben is here." Prime comforted her sister as Vanya glanced up at her, her face expressing relief.

Prime focused on Ben, holding onto his arm and leaning her head against him, but she did have to crane her neck a bit more as she was taller than him at that particular moment.

Allison nodded her head in agreement, though her expression then quickly turned glum, as she stated, "I agree - now it means that Claire doesn't exist - they all exchanged glances, finally realizing that their niece no longer existed in this timeline."

"I'm sorry, Allison." Five expressed his apologies and Prime looked at him with a hint of surprise, but she recognized that, despite him being rather cold-hearted, he still had empathy.

"It's alright, it's not about me - it's about us." Allison stated as she attempted to reassure them but was cautious of coming across as overbearing.

"That's right, asides from the matter with our father, who is this enemy? Is it your employer? " Luther inquired.

Five nodded in affirmation and replied, "Yeah, she will locate us eventually, and she's definitely going to do anything that she can to ensure that the apocalypse takes place."

"The apocalypse?" Vanya queried as she awaited further clarification, and when they all went quiet, she added, "Wait, do you mean the one that you informed me about on the first night you returned? What was the catalyst?" All of them sat still, awaiting a reply from someone.

Prime, sensing the delicate predicament at hand, took a shot in the dark and stated plainly, "It's you, V."

"W-what?" Vanya uttered in disbelief as she looked around at everyone as she uttered those words and stood up, her tone growing rather accusatory, "They - why - why did you bring me here?" She continued on, but as she went on, she began asking questions, "You - could have - "

"No, there's no way," Klaus rebuked her notion, expressing his unwavering solidarity, "We are in this together, we are never abandoning you ever again."

Prime smiled at him as she whispered to Ben, "I truly enjoy sober Klaus."

To which, Ben nodded in response, "Yeah, that's what I said as well."

"Sobriety isn't all that bad, not gonna lie." Klaus conceded, shrugging his shoulders as he spoke, "and I know how to tune others out now - well, sort of - but I'll get the hang of it eventually."

"But, if I was the catalyst, then, I'll become the villain again," Vanya exclaimed as her voice became slightly shaky, indicating that she was genuinely concerned.

"V, as long as we all stick together, we can avert that impending doom. For now, we simply need to collaborate and function as one cohesive unit to take down this - hmm, what did she call herself again?" Prime pivoted her head toward Five as she spoke, "The Handler ."

"The Handler, this is the individual we need to eliminate - yes, you're absolutely right. To prevent any further attempts at utilizing V, we must execute this task - and I guarantee that, once we do so, we will prevent the aforementioned scenario from occurring." Prime concurred with her own statement, adding to it with, "Once we've achieved our mission, we'll avoid that outcome, without a doubt."

"That is, indeed, accurate - we indeed must handle this situation in the most suitable manner - as a team," Five affirmed, adding onto what Prime had said whilst maintaining a levelheaded stance.

Amidst everything proceeding smoothly, Prime let out an inaudible groan, leaning forward and placing her hands on her forehead as she facepalmed, prompting Ben to inquire, "What's the matter, Prime?"

"Oh, right - well, I omitted one particular detail from our conversation, but - " Prime paused for a brief moment, likely preparing herself for her next sentence.

Diego then responded, "And what is that thing - that you neglected to mention?"

"Right, the Serum for my Vulnerable Brainwashing, it was - I had left it inside a box that Pogo had presented me with, which contained other items for each one of us - but, now that we have come back to this place, Father and Pogo - they have the means to manipulate me to their hearts' content, and I'll be -" Vanya began talking, but then trailed off, perhaps realizing that she was about to describe a rather unpleasant outcome.

Luther seemed slightly bewildered as he tilted his head and then narrowed his eyes, likely attempting to focus more intently on the situation, but he soon halted himself, abruptly cutting off the sentence that he was about to embark on," Oh the 'You muisn't--

"Wait, wait, wait! Do not utter those words!" Prime swiftly stood up, vigorously waving her arms back-and-forth in Luther's direction, "The serum is extremely efficient, and I - I do not wish to revisit that experience, you recall the sort of punishment that Father resorted to, Mom also told you about it, I personally witnessed that."

"You-" Luther started off, but then promptly cut himself off, lowering his gaze, as though it were the most logical thing to do.

Upon Ben's consoling gesture, Prime regarded him with a look of relief, expressing that it felt comforting to receive such a touch. She then remarked, "I truly hope that this is not merely a fantasy, indeed," before Ben responded by pinching her cheek and then shaking his head, adding, "I do not believe that to be the case."

"That is the issue - I'm uncertain whether the Serum to cure my Vulnerable Brainwashing has actually been developed yet, but, if Five's ex-employer discovers it, then it will prove to be my ruin since they may utilize me as a weapon, and utilize me in a way that could harm all of you in the process." Prime grimaced and scratched her head as she considered the aforementioned predicament, perhaps contemplating the severity of it or the potential consequences if this situation were to become reality.

"That'll suck big time," Klaus stated while throwing himself carelessly onto Prime's lap and slumping down to a horizontal position, which prompted her to experience a sense of relief as she observed Klaus's efforts at trying to comfort her in his singular and unique manner, despite the seriousness of their current predicament.

"Nothing ever seems easy for us, not a single thing, ever." Luther leaned up against the wall, and let out a sigh as he spoke, possibly implying the sheer complexity of their ongoing issue.

To this matter, Allison offered a more optimistic viewpoint, stating, "True, we possess both Five and Vanya's assistance this go-around - it's at least a head start."

All of the siblings exchanged gazes, conveying their mutual understanding of said notion and acknowledging the value that it would add to their situation.

"I guess that's true, by the way, I'm not really fond of these - atrocious garments, Dad has awful fashion sense" Prime stated as she tugged on her attire and then the group all erupted into laughter, enjoying one another's company and acknowledging that even seemingly insignificant details could elicit a positive reaction.

"That'd be the wisest course of action - let's get into our uniforms before Father and the others make their return, as we don't need anymore reprimands from the elderly individual," Diego remarked as he arose from his position and began to walk away.

The others in the group agreed with his statement and subsequently followed in his footsteps, heading into their respective bedrooms so that they could alter their appearance and make themselves presentable.

As the group separated, each member taking their own unique path, Prime walked into a designated bedroom and began to alter her attire to that which was more appropriate for the circumstances. She took in a deep breath and then looked into a mirror, studying her appearance as she did so.

"We possess a second shot, an opportunity to set things straight." Prime softly uttered to herself as she continued to examine her reflection in the mirror, appearing slightly apprehensive as if fearing that this was all a facade, but her doubts were promptly washed away as she took another breath and decided to take this chance wholeheartedly.

In this mindset, Prime completed her outfit and proceeded to exit the room, shutting the door behind her while she departed. She proceeded to embark on a walk as she approached the door to the hallway, taking in the atmosphere and becoming more and more convinced that this chance they had was real and that they should utilize this precious shot they had received.
