Twenty-Five: An Emotionally Disturbed Child? Yeah, That Sounds About Right.
Rewritten
It was kind of amazing the difference in Jack once I told him Leo and I were dating. He went into a weird overprotective Dad mode. He kind of freaked Leo out. When I informed him of this he relaxed a bit. He still kept an eye on us, but I overheard him and Zack talking and Jack informed him that Leo looked and acted a lot more happier. And that I seemed happier too. And that seemed to make him less concerned about Leo and I. My life almost seemed normal. I knew it wasn't, but it felt like it. Leo and I often held hands and shared little kisses. Leo wasn't much for PDA, but when we were on the bus he didn't seem to care as much. Zack and I still sat read together at night, which was great, but the more often we did it the less I slept. It became apparent to me right around that time that all of my not sleeping wasn't normal. I had insomnia. Pretty bad insomnia too. Part of me thought I should tell Jack, but the other didn't want to bother him with it. He was happy. And I didn't want to ruin that. I had reached a point where I was lucky if I got more than three hours of sleep a night. I did my best to hide the bags under my eyes and not yawn too much. I didn't want to worry them. Especially since Alex and Rian's birthdays were quickly approaching which meant Christmas was too. It was then that I realized just how little I actually knew about the two of them. I had absolutely no idea what to get them. However I was not in the mood to think about it.
It was one of those days where everything pissed me off. I suppose it started when we were all getting ready for the day at the same time. We were all in the bunk area. All five of them had stepped on me at least once and I was losing my cool.
"Step on me one more time and I will kick you in the crotch." I snapped while trying to find my grey combat boots. All five of them stopped what they were doing and shared a look. "All five of you." I added. "Has anyone seen my other shoe?" I asked.
"What does it look like?" Alex asked.
"It's Grey. It has laces. It's the smallest shoe on the bus!"
"Baby girl. . ." Jack went to put his hand on my shoulder and I pulled away.
"Don't touch me." He looked hurt. "Please." I dropped the one boot I had and walked down to the bathroom with my pile of clean clothes. The shoes weren't that important. I took my pjs off and put on my jeans and bra. I was attempting to make hair look better when the bathroom door opened. I turned and met Zack's wide hazel eyes.
"Sorry!" He yelled and slammed the door. Despite my previous annoyance at everyone I couldn't help the giggle that escaped. I pulled my shirt on and finished with my hair before gathering up my stuff and leaving the bathroom. I put my stuff back in my suitcase and then went to find Zack. He was in his bunk. He got wide eyed and his face flushed pink when he saw me.
"I am so sorry."
"Psh. I don't care. I shared a room with seven other girls, privacy was basically nonexistent." I gave him a smile.
"I'm still sorry."
"Well I accept your apology." I kissed his forehead and then pulled the curtain back across. I picked up my boot off the floor and went back to looking for the other one. Jack walked up while I was searching.
"Hey." He said. I jumped as I hadn't heard him coming. I took a step back and fell, landing on my butt. "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine." I muttered. "Still can't find my other boot though." I pushed myself up.
"This one?" Jack asked while holding up my other boot. He was smiling, but I didn't see what was so funny.
"Dick." I grabbed the boot and walked out to the table. I put on my boots, crossed my arms on the table and rested my head on them in an attempt to ignore my nausea. Jack had evidently followed me. He started to rub my back. "If you want to keep that hand keep it away from me." The hand left my back. Jack sighed.
"You have breakfast?"
"No."
"You should eat." I groaned. He sighed again and walked to the back lounge. I stood and opened the little cabinet doors in search of bread and Nutella. I found the heel crust of the bread and the empty Nutella jar.
"Who ate my Nutella?" I asked as I walked into the bunk area. Alex stuck his head out of his bunk and smiled sheepishly.
"I didn't realize it was yours." I threw the empty Nutella jar in his direction. He pulled his head back into his bunk.
"You owe me Nutella."
"You got it." He said from behind the curtain.
"Are you okay, baby girl?" Jack asked.
"I'm fucking fabulous. Oh fuck!" I made it to the bathroom just in time. I didn't talk to anyone much that day and they didn't talk to me. Through out the day Jack kept glancing at me with this really sad look in his eyes. I didn't pay much attention to him though. Too distracted by my annoyance at the world. I tried not to snap at everyone, but that only resulted in me not talking to anyone. I spent the majority of the day with Leo. Ignoring him, but with him nonetheless. We listened to music and he braided my hair. It was nice and definitely helped make my shitty day better.
By eleven that night I was feeling guilty about all the shit I'd done. I was sitting with Zack, reading, and I just burst into tears.
"I'm sorry I was such a bitch today." Zack didn't know what to do. Which looking back on it is kinda funny, but at the time I was sobbing like an emotionally disturbed child. Which, to be honest, is pretty accurate.
"It's okay. We know you didn't mean it."
"That doesn't excuse my shitty behavior." I rested my arms on the table and put my head on them whilst still crying. Zack sat down beside me and pulled me away from the table top. He pulled me against his chest and I let him. I don't know how long we sat like that, but I continued to apologize for all the bitchy things I'd said and done.
"Jack's been mad at me all day." I was starting to hiccup.
"I'm not mad." Jack whispered. I jumped a bit in surprise, not realizing he was there. He climbed over the table and sat on my other side.
"I'm sorry!" I told him. I couldn't make myself look at him.
"I know you don't mean anything by it." Jack assured me. I pulled away from Zack and looked at Jack.
"I'm still sorry." I wiped my face on my sleeve. Jack pulled into a hug.
"It's okay." I sniffed and nodded into his chest.
"Love you, Dad." My words were muffled by his shirt, but I knew he heard because he kissed my head and said,
"Love you too, Baby girl." Then I went and crawled in Leo's bunk with him.

The next morning I didn't get up till eight. It was the most sleep I'd gotten since my first night back with Jack. I got all ready for the day and then walked into the kitchen for coffee. Jack, Zack, Alex and Rian were sitting at the table discussing the days plans. Leo was still in bed. I got my coffee and then turned to the table. Zack and Jack were on one side and Alex and Rian were on the other. I put my attention on Jack and Zack.
"I'm. . ." I sighed, "I'm sorry about last night."
"It's okay." Zack replied.
"Yeah. We know your not yourself right now." Jack added. I offered them a small smile.
"What happened last night?" Alex asked.
"Things." Jack said and went back to sipping his coffee. Alex rolled his eyes and looked at me. I shared a look with Jack and then mimed zipping my lips.
"Hard to believe you aren't actually related sometimes." Alex said.
"I'm sorry about ignoring all of you yesterday. And for yelling at you. And threatening to kick you all in the crotch." Jack and Alex chuckled. Rian just shrugged and smiled and Zack smiled.
"Honestly better you yelling at us than drunk Rian. At least we know what we did to piss you off. Rian just yells because he can." Alex said. Jack laughed and nodded in agreement, Zack was ignoring all of us now and Rian looked completely done with both Alex and Jack.
"Oh. Before I forget." Alex reached under the table and came up with a jar of Nutella.
"Nutella!" I grabbed the jar and lunged over Rian to give him a hug. "Thank you!" I rummaged through the cabinets until I found a loaf of bread and proceeded to eat three pieces with Nutella.
----
I was running out of time to get birthday presents for Alex and Rian. I asked Jack to take me shopping which was a horrible idea in retrospect. I should have asked Zack. Jack spent the entire time making stupid suggestions. Eventually I bought Rian few CDs and got Alex a t-shirt that said; Time to exercise on the front and; And by that I mean eat pizza on the back. It was dumb, but it was the best I could do. Zack assured me that they would love them.
The night of Alex's birthday the crew threw a joint birthday for him and Rian. Leo and I stayed for a little bit, but there was alcohol and let's just say that things get weird when there's alcohol involved. Around 1:00 am they all came stumbling back into the bus, bringing with them the stench of alcohol.
"I LOVE YOU!" Jack yelled at no in particular. He tipped sideways until the wall was the only thing keeping him upright.
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY, RIAN!" Rian yelled and threw an arm around Jack's shoulders. Jack hiccuped a half dozen times before falling out Rian's grip and landing on his face on the floor. He laughed for a solid five minutes and then fell asleep.
"RIAN!" Alex threw himself at Rian. "I MISS LISA!"
"Should call HER!" Rian told him with a foolish grin.
"YES!!!" Alex tried to run to the back of the bus, tripped of Jack and fell on top of Zack who was trying to get to the bunks. Rian took a step forward and tripped over Jack. How Jack slept through both of them kicking him, I don't know. Must have been the alcohol.
"WHo LeFt JAcK on The FucKIng FlOOr?!" Rian yelled. Zack was half carrying half dragging Alex to the back of the bus and Rian was stumbling after them. Jack was still sleeping on the floor. Once the other three were in bed I grabbed Jack's pillow and blanket and made him comfortable on the floor before laying awake in my bunk for another hour and then falling asleep.
The next morning Zack was out on a run when I got up, Rian was attempting to drown himself in the shower and Alex was still in his bunk groaning and moaning about his head hurting. Jack was still sound asleep on the floor. Leo was snoring softly in his bunk. I got some bread with Nutella and made coffee before sitting at the table and waiting for someone to join me. I was alone until almost ten. Leo was the first one. He looked like he hadn't slept well. He sat beside me at the table and rested his head on my shoulder. Rian was the next one.
"Morning." I said between bites of my breakfast. He grunted in response, took a handful of painkillers, poured himself some coffee and then joined me at the table. Zack was next. He came in from his run shirtless and sweaty.
"Good morning. You guys are a lively bunch." He nudged Jack with his foot.
"Mownin!" I said around a bite of bread and Nutella. Rian grunted again and Leo mumbled a quick, 'good morning.' Zack went to get a shower. After his shower Alex got up and got a shower as well.
"So what stupid things did we do last night?" He asked after he'd poured himself a cup of coffee.
"Not much. Rian yelled happy birthday Rian at Dad. Dad fell over, laughed for five minutes straight and then passed out. Alex tripped over him and fell on Zack and then Rian tripped over Dad and demanded to know who left him on the fucking floor." I giggled. Rian nodded like none of it surprised him and Alex laughed. Ten minutes late Jack woke up and stumbled to the bathroom while muttering to himself. I remembered my gifts for Alex and Rian and went to get them from my suitcase.
"Here." I said as I came back to the table and held out their gifts. Alex opened his and read it.
"Thanks, Princess." I smiled and nodded.
"These are great, thanks a lot." Rian added.
"I'm glad you like them." Jack stepped out of the bathroom showered and shirtless.
"Morning, Baby girl." He wrapped an arm around me and kissed my forehead.
"Morning, Dad." He smiled and then started rummaging through the cabinets for painkillers.
"Did I do anything stupid last night?"
"Not that I can remember." Alex said.
"You very loudly declared your love for someone. Then you passed out." I informed him.
"Huh. Sounds almost normal." Rian said.
"What does?" Zack asked, joining us in the kitchen.
"Me." Jack said before taking a long drink of coffee.
"You've never been normal a day in your life." Zack said with a smile.
"I know." Jack grinned. Zack rolled his eyes.
"Ugh. I need more coffee." Alex groaned and dropped his head on the table. I giggled and Jack laughed. Leo wrapped his arm around my waist and kissed my cheek. Life was good.
You know it's kinda cool how someone can just pop into your life all of a sudden and become so important to you within such small amount of time. But I think that's what makes life so interesting. There's always a reason to be hopeful for the future because you never know what good things will come your way.
