The Card

Since its your birthday I'll refrain from saying something snarky about how old your getting . . .

Even though it's true. Happy Birthday, Old Timer!

Dear Jack,

I want you to know that though I haven't called you dad, I see you as a parent. I'm just not ready. I'm trying. I really am and I hope you aren't to upset or think that I don't appreciate everything you've done for me. I can't find the words to express how grateful I am. You are an amazing parent. At least to me. You have given me so much. More than you probably realize. Not only have you given me gifts and a family, but you have given me love. I needed that more than I knew. I'm giving you the best gift I can. I'm giving you my trust and a very special place in my heart. I trust that you will feed, clothe, protect and support as you say you will. I trust that when you say you love me you mean it. I trust you will be here for me through thick and thin and I promise to do the same for you. I'm giving you that place in my heart, because it is not meant to be filled by gifts and friends, but by a parent. By the person I know I will love and be loved by forever.
I understand how important communication is in any relationship. I'm doing my best put down my walls and let you in, but please remember this is a a new and strange experience for me. I'm still in the process of getting to know you. I never had to do that with my biological parents. I'm adjusting to my new life and my dad. Letting my parents go is harder than I realized, but I have to work through it on my own. Thank you for respecting that and not pushing me to forget them. It means a lot to me.
I don't think I can say this enough, but thank you. For everything you've done. Thank you for being the best dad a girl ask for. And I want you to know that when I'm ready I will say that out out loud. And probably follow it closely by I love you. Happy Birthday, Dad!

Love,
Your baby girl
