Chapter Thirty-One: Family

For those wondering this chapter didn't exist when I wrote this book the first time. So enjoy a chapter never seen before!
Avery L.

Since everyone knew about my baby anyway I put up a thing on my insta. A picture from my most recent ultrasound and then I practically wrote a speech under it.
I guess you all know, but I'm having baby. A girl for those wondering. She is not Jack's despite what everyone seems to think and I have paternity test to prove it. Jack is not that kind of person. Please be kind to him. He's very stressed out and you accusing him of hurting me like that is killing him. He loves me and my baby. If you believe that he could've done something like that to me then you need to rethink how you look at people you don't even know! Unfortunately my baby is a result of rape. I do not know the father nor do I want to. I love this baby with every fiber of my being. Knowing what it feels like to not have parents I don't want her to go through that. That said please respect my privacy and Jack's. We have enough on our plates without dealing with your bullshit too.
After I posted it I looked back through Jack's Insta. There were so many pictures of me. The most recent picture that I was in was from the ice cream shop on my gotcha day. The caption read, My baby girl has been mine for a whole year now. A lot has happened and she's been so fucking strong through it all. Happy late birthday and happy gotcha day baby girl! I smiled and liked the post. Sure it was a couple weeks old, but it didn't matter.

"I forget what's it like to live with people who genuinely care about you." Leo was telling me. "I mentioned needing new socks and Zack took me shopping. I own more clothes now than I ever have in my entire life! It's awesome."
"Tell me about it. Dad did the same for me. He bought me a bike and an iPad and a phone and books and a ukulele. I never asked for any of it." He was quiet for a minute.
"I miss you."
"I miss you too."
"Um, I just want you to know, that I want to be there for you and the baby."
"Really?" As if Leo couldn't get any sweeter.
"Yeah. I, uh, just found out I've been accepted to a college in California."
"You were?" I asked.
"Yeah."
"That's awesome. But why California?"
"I've always wanted to go back."
"Go back?" He sighed and I could hear the mattress springs squeak as he moved around.
"Yeah. That's where I'm from. When Dad, ya know, lost his mind, I was sent to live with Grandma in MD."
"Oh. I didn't know that."
"Yeah. Well I don't like talking about it. Anyway. I got into college so I'll be moving to Berkeley."
"Cool. It kinda slipped my mind you graduated. That's not really something I can do anymore." I rubbed my baby bump. "I've been thinking about continuing with online school."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah. Which right now sounds totally doable, but in a couple months won't even be thinkable." I sighed. "But I don't know." He didn't say anything. "Leo?" Then I heard him snore softly. I giggled. "Love you, baby." Then I ended the call. I took a nap and then Jack and I went grocery shopping. We also picked up the rest of the things I'd need for the baby.
