Chapter Eleven: Memphis TN, Grand Junction CO, and Moscow ID

We were taking our time on our road trip so it took us four days to get to Memphis. Memphis was beautiful. We spent the entire day there. We walked down Beale St and went into all the cute little shops. We bought souvenirs. We had lunch at Taco Bell and then we went to the Zoo. It was my first time going to a zoo. It was a lot of fun. I took pictures of all the animals and a bunch of Jack too. We also got to feed the Koi. There must have been fifty or so in the pond and they piled on top of each other trying to get the food. It was pretty entertaining.
"Who knew feeding fish could be so fun?" I asked as I stuck another quarter into the machine and got more fish food.
"It's weirdly fascinating." Jack agreed while pulling his phone out. He looked at the screen before putting the phone to his ear, "You need to join the twenty-first century." Then he laughed. He kept talking and I got bored of the fish. I grabbed his hand and tugged him away from the fish and in the direction of the reptile house. "Sounds good. Put whatever's left in the shed and for the love of God don't forget to lock the back door. We'll be back in a couple weeks. We will probably do that, but I haven't talked to her yet. I should go. We're at the zoo and we're about enter the reptile house. I need to protect Anna in case the snakes freak her out too much." I stuck my tongue out at him and he laughed before doing the same to me. "I'll think about considering possibly telling her. Fuck you too." He laughed again and then hung up. "Alex says hi."
"I kinda figured." We walked into the reptile house and were instantly surrounded by cold and damp.
"I've always been fascinated by lizards. Not snakes though. They gross me out." The reptile house was fun right up until a particularly large snake lunged at the glass, I shrieked, Jack laughed and we got dirty looks from a snobby looking woman and her kids.
Three days later we were in Grand Junction, Colorado. It was beautiful. The day before we got there I filled the memory card in my camera so the first thing I had to do was get another one. And then we just walked around, at ice cream until Jack started complaining that it was too hot so we went back to the hotel and went for a swim in the pool. And by swim I mean I walked the length of the pool while Jack floated on his back. Then he realized that I couldn't swim and took it upon himself to 'teach' me. It didn't end well. I inhaled a very large and probably unhealthy amount of chlorinated water. Once I stopped coughing and spluttering I inadvertently started a splash fight which came to an abrupt stop when an elderly couple walked in and gave us very disapproving stares. We went out for dinner. We found this adorable little diner to eat at. That was when I realized I was one of those people. The ones who take pictures of their food for Instagram. Not that I have anything against those kind of people I just didn't think I would be one of them. Jack and I spent the rest of the evening trying to take pictures of the other without them realizing. I actually managed to get quite a few after I turned the volume off on my phone so you couldn't hear the 'shutter'. Jack got quite a few of me too, but I won. He didn't think so, but I totally did. We spent the first part of the next day in Grand Junction as well because Jack felt bad that we spent the previous afternoon in the hotel. Honestly it was kind of nice to just relax in the pool for awhile. That afternoon we found a karaoke place and spent about two hours there. Karaoke was more fun than I ever imagined. I found out afterward that Jack got video of me singing. Weeks later I would find him watching it and smiling as if it was the greatest thing he'd ever seen. It really wasn't, but he loved it just the same.
Four days later we wound up in a little college town called Moscow in Idaho. It was a beautiful little place surrounded by rolling hills and golden fields. It was small so there wasn't much to do, but also had this small town lifestyle vibe that I loved. We were lucky enough to get there Friday night which meant that Saturday morning we could go to the farmer's market. It was amazing and a lot bigger than I anticipated. After that we walked around the University of Idaho's arboretum. It was really nice and it was breezy so we didn't overheat. We also visited this old timey toy shop. We found this adorable diner to have lunch at and then we walked down main st. There were a couple small used book stores that we went into and I ended up buying six books I definitely didn't need, but really wanted. Then we found a music store. Jack bought me a ukulele. I didn't ask him to. He just said he thought it was funny and that it wasn't difficult to learn. So that's how I ended up with a bright green ukulele. We ended up buying a large cardboard box to put all of the stuff we bought into so that it wasn't just floating around in the car. I got some beautiful pictures while we were  there. And the sunset was amazing! We were leaving Walmart when it happened. The Walmart there is on a hill with almost completely unobstructed views to the west and it was gorgeous.
