Maps and Rude People
You awoke at the break of dawn to the sound of birds chirping. Slowly sticking your head out of your shelter you glanced around.
Not seeing anyone around, you pulled yourself out of the shelter. You then began to stretch out your stiff body before turning to your backpack. Opening it up you began searching though it for the first aid bag.
Seeing the first aid bag you pulled it out. Unzipping the red bag you looked threw it's contents. There was antibiotic ointment, disinfectant spray, bug bite ointment, bandaids, gloves, tweezers, scissors, Tylenol, gauze bandage rolls, non stick bandaids, and a lighter.
After looking over the contents of the bag you took your jacket off and rolled the left sleeve of your shirt up. You then unwrapped the bandage around your arm and took the nonstick bandaid off.
The stitches in your arm still looked alright and didn't show any sign of infection much to your relief. You wanted to keep your arm that way so you began to clean and dress the wound.
First you put a glove on one of your hands before using your gloved hand to put the antibiotic ointment on. You then put a nonstick bandage over the stitches before wrapping your arm with gauze bandage roll.
Once finished with that you took your glove off and put it back into your backpack. You then sprayed the disinfectant spray on the scraps on your hands and the other cuts on your body.
After that you put all the medical supplies back in the first aid bag and zipped it up before putting it in your backpack. You then folded your blanket and placed it in your backpack before zipping it shut.
Putting your jacket back on you zipped it up before slinging your backpack around your shoulders. You then turned away from your shelter and began walking towards the stream. Reaching the stream you crouched down and began drinking from it.
Your drinking momentarily halted as you heard a twig snap a little ways up stream. Turning your head towards the sound you watched as two women came out of the trees.
You stayed completely still in hopes that they wouldn't notice you. However, that didn't work out for you and as soon as they saw you they froze.
They stayed silent for a few moments before one of the women spoke. The women who spoke had long black hair.
"Umm hello there...We're sorry to disturb you... we didn't know someone else was going to be camping in this area." The women said.
'So they think I'm a camper... hmm they don't seem to recognize me from the news so they must not know... regardless of them not knowing it would probably be safer to play along.' You thought while standing up.
"Yes... I was camping near this area before my tent was attacked by a wild animal. In the attack I lost my map. Do you think you two could point me in the direction of a road so I can find my way back to town?" You lied while offering them a small friendly smile.
"Oh that's terrible!" The other woman said with a sympathetic frown forming on her face. She also had long hair but her hair was dyed dark purple.
"Well that explains why you look so rough...Anyways yea, we can point you in the right direction." The woman with black hair added after the girl with purple hair spoke.
"Yea...Thank you." You spoke softly as you walked over to the two women.
"No problem." The woman with black hair spoke while pulling a map out of her pocket. She then opened it and looked over it for a few minutes before speaking again.
"If you follow this trail which is just a little ways from here it will lead you to a road into town." The woman spoke while pointing at the map before pointing in the direction of the trail in the forest.
"Thank you. You're a life saver." You said to them with a small smile.
"You're welcome. Here. You can take this map. We have another one we can use." The women with black hair said with a small smile as she handed you the map.
You took the map from her hand and gave her and the other girl another smile before walking off towards the trail.
After around 10 minutes of searching you finally found the trail. Once on the trail you began to quicken your pace to that of a brisk walk. You would of ran instead of walking but you body was still too sore to do such.
After about two hours of walking along the trail you made it to a road. You immediately recognized the road as the main one that would either lead you in or out of town.
Not wanting to go anywhere near your old town you followed near the side of the road that went in the opposite direction as the town.
You didn't walk straight beside the road though, instead you followed the road from the safety of the forest.
You followed the road for many hours, struggling to keep going due to the hunger pains in your stomach. Luckily after another three hours of walking you came upon the city of Portland Oregon.
You silently watched cars drive into Portland from the cover of the forest. After a few moments of watching and thinking of a subtle way to enter the city you gave up and decided to just casually stroll in along the side of the road.
'Hopefully people just think I'm a runaway teenager.' You thought while flipping the hood of your jacket over your head. You then proceeded to walk into the city. As you walked into the city you adjusted your hair beneath your hood so that it helped to cover your face more.
For added measure you made sure to keep your head down as you walked down the street. You didn't want to take any chances of someone recognizing you from the news.
As you walked further into the city your were greeted with the smell of car fumes mingled with the scent of food.
'Man I need to find a dollar store or a gas station so I can get something cheap to eat.' You thought as you slightly looked up in search of either of those places. Not seeing either a sigh escaped your lips.
'Damn.' You thought in defeat before deciding it would be best to push the thought of food out of your mind for now. Instead you busied yourself with looking for a bus station so you could get a ride out of the city.
Having no such luck in finding a bus station after a hour of wandering around the city you decided to ask a local for directions.
You approached the first person you saw, which happened to be a middle aged man texting on his phone.
"Hey, I'm looking for the bus station. Could you tell me where it is?" You asked the man.
He looked up from his phone and took in your appearance before a frown crossed his face.
"Sorry. Can't help you. I don't like to associate with people such as yourself." The man rudely stated before walking off.
'What is that suppose to mean!?' You thought angrily while glaring after the mans retreating form. You then shook your head in annoyance before approaching a women.
You asked the same thing as you had asked the man to the woman but instead of saying anything she simply shoved passed you without a word.
'What is with these people?' You thought in annoyance while glancing around at your surroundings.
You didn't see anything around you that could help you find the bus station but you did see a gas station across the street.
Checking to see if there was any cars coming and seeing none you quickly crossed the street. Once across the street you made your way to the convenience store attached to the gas station.
Opening the door to the convenience store you stepped inside. You glanced around the store before making your way towards the isle with chips in it.
You grabbed two small bags of chips before walking over to the section of the store that had drinks. Grabbing a bottle of water you slipped your backpack off your shoulder and started searching threw it for your money.
Taking out a ten dollar bill you zipped your bag back up before putting it back on. You then turned around and walked over to the register.
Placing your items onto the counter you spared a look at the cashier. It was an older man with graying hair.
"Will this be all miss?" The man said while reaching for your items.
"Yes. Uh wait, actually do you think you could point me in the direction of a bus station?" You said while looking up at the man.
"Oh sure. If you follow down this side walk for a couple more blocks there will be a bus station on this side of the road." The man said as he scanned your items.
"Thank you so much." You said with a small smile while handing him the money you owed him for the items.
"Keep the money. You probably need it more than I do." The man said with a kind smile as he handed you your items along with a busing map he got from underneath the counter.
"Really? Well thank you sir." You said while taking your items and the busing map from him with a genuine smile on your face.
"It's no problem. You stay safe now." The man said while giving you a small wave as you walked towards the door. You nodded your head at him before walking out the door.
Once outside you removed your backpack and put your things in it before walking in the direction the man told you you go. After a fifteen minute walk you made it to the bus station.
There were a few people waiting near some benches for their bus to show up. None of them payed you any mind as you walked over to them.
Now standing near one of the benches you took the busing map out that the cashier gave you. Opening the map up your eyes scanned over it.
'Hmm I could take the 4:15 p.m train to Eugene. It's only $12.' You thought to yourself as you read over the train schedule.
'And then from there I can hitch hike to California since it's the closest state from here.' You thought as you walked over to the line in front of the ticket counter.
As you waited in line you searched threw your backpack for two more dollars. Finding the two dollar bills you stuffed them into your jacket pocket with the rest of your bus money.
Soon after putting your money in your pocket it was your turn in line.
Stepping up to the ticket counter you waited for the person working at the booth to speak.
"Hello mam. Which bus ticket would you like to buy today?" The worker said with an expectant look.
"I would like to buy the 4:15 single ticket from Portland to Eugene." You said while pulling your money out of your pocket.
"Alright. That will be $12." The worker said while taking your money and putting it in a cash register. They then handed you your ticket.
"Thank you." You said while stuffing the ticket into our pocket before walking over to one of the empty benches.
You sat down on a bench with a tired sigh. You then glanced to the right to see a small clock tower. It read 3:50.
'Not bad, I only have to wait 25 minutes for my bus to arrive.' You thought as you opened your backpack up. You took out a bag of chips and your bottle of water before zipping your backpack back up.
Taking a long gulp of water you looked around. There was a family of four setting on the bench beside yours along with a few people standing up.
You watched the family for a few moments before looking away with a sad frown. They reminded you of your parents.
You missed them and desperately wished you could see their smiling faces again but you knew you would never get the chance to.
It filled you with this sort of bleak emptiness at the thought of never getting to talk to your parents again. In all honesty you felt as if it would have been better to of let those men end you rather than struggling with the pain of losing your parents.
Your parents wouldn't have wanted you to give up though; they would of wanted you to survive and move past this. Which is the reason why you we're still fighting to live.
'I will live for you Mom and Dad. No matter what, I'll live and I'll make you both proud.' You thought as you wiped the fresh tears forming in your eyes away.
You then took a deep breath to calm yourself before putting your water back into your backpack. After that you opened up your bag of chips and began to eat them while staring off into space.
Finishing your bag of chips you glanced back up at the small clock tower.
'4:10? Man time flies.' You thought while standing up and putting your backpack on. You then threw your trash into a near by trash can before walking over to your bus.
Stepping into the bus you handed your ticket to the bus driver before walking to the back of the bus. Slipping your backpack off your shoulders you took a seat by the window.
Wrapping your arms around the backpack in your lap you turned your head towards the window. You silently stared out the window as you waited for the rest of the passengers to get on the bus.
Once the last passenger got on the bus the bus driver began driving away from the bus station.
'Hopefully the ride isn't too long.' You thought as you continued to stare absentmindedly out the window.
