A Painful Reality

A knot began forming in your stomach at the sound of footsteps nearing the door. A soft click sounded as the door slowly opened.

Behind the door was a woman who looked to be in her early fourties. She had blonde messy hair and dark brown eyes.

She stared at you tiredly for a few moments before her eyes widened.

"Oh my god! You're bleeding! Are you okay?!" The women said worriedly as she took in your oappearance.

You shook your head afraid your voice would crack if you spoke.

"Oh you poor thing, please come inside. My husband and I can help you." The women said as she stepped to the side of the door so you could enter.

'Should I go in? I mean I don't even know these people... they could be crazy for all I know.' You thought as you glanced between the door and the forest.

'If I stay out here I'll probably get killed though.' You thought before making up your mind and slowly walking into the house. The women gently shut the door behind you and locked it.

She then smiled at you reassuringly and turned her head towards the stairs.

"Jamie! Get down here and bring the first aid kit, its an emergency!" The women yelled up the stairs to who you assumed was her husband.

The women then turned to you with kind smile adorning her face.

"Come dear, we can wait in the dining room so that you can have a place to seat for when he treats your wounds." The woman said as she gestured for you to follow her.
You nodded and silently trailed behind the woman into the dining room.

"I understand if you don't want to talk, you look like you've been through a lot... but I just wanted to let you know that my name is Isabell and if you need anything at all feel free to ask." The woman you now knew as Isabel said with a calming smile.

You simply nodded. You didn't want to speak. You were afraid they would ask about what happened and you weren't ready speak about it yet.

Isabel smiled gently at you as she gestured for you to take a seat at the dining table. You eagerly complied. You were too tired to stand up anymore.

After you sat down a tall man with wavy brown hair and green eyes walked into the room. He was carrying a first aid kit.

"What's the emergen- oh." The man started to say until he saw you setting at the dining table. He glanced to Isabel before walking over to you.

He smiled gently down at you as he placed the first aid kit on the table.

"Hey I'm Jamie, Isabel's husband. I'm going to look at your cuts, okay?"

You nodded as you silently watched Jamie open up the first aid kit. He pulled out a pair of blue gloves along with other various medical supplies.

He smiled reassuringly at you as he slipped the gloves on. He then began to inspect your wounds.

He started with your bloodied arm first.

"Can you take this shirt of so I can better see the wound?" Jamie asked as he pointed to your plaid over shirt.

You nodded your head absentmindedly as you slipped you the shirt off. You had a short sleeved shirt on underneath the plaid one so it's not like he would see anything anyways.

Jamie gently took the shirt from you and placed it on the table. He then proceeded to inspect the wound before throughly disinfecting it. It hurt but it was nothing to compared to the pain of of losing your parents and dogs.

"I think this will need a few stitches..." Jamie murmured quietly to himself as he pulled out the necessary items from the first aid bag. He then brought out a lighter from his pocket and heated up the hook to disinfect it. Once that was done he began to stitch up the cut on your arm.

You let out a breath you didn't realize you were holding after Jamie finished the last stitch on your arm. It really hurt but you knew it was necessary if you wanted the cut to heal properly.

"Sorry about that..." Jamie murmured as he rubbed some kind of ointment on the cut. He then gently put a nonstick bandage over it.

Now finished with that he moved onto inspecting your scratched and bloodied hands. He gently washed them off with a wash cloth and disinfected them.

Once finished he stood up and gave you a smile before walking over to Isabel. He quietly talked to her for a few minutes before going back upstairs. Isabel watched him go before walking over to you.

"I talked to Jamie and we don't mind if you stay the night." Isabel said with a gentle smile on her face.

"Thank you..."

"You're welcome. Now follow me." Isabel said softly as she gently took you by the arm and began leading you upstairs.

You followed silently beside her as she brought you up the stairs and onto the second floor. From there she led you down a hallway before stopping in front of a white door.

"This was our daughter's room before she went off to college. It hasn't been used in a while but it's still pretty clean for the most part." Isabel said while opening the door. She the proceeded turn the light switch on to the bedroom.

The light revealed an average sized room with minimal furniture in it.
Near the door was a large dresser with a trash can beside it. Then across the room, beside the window was a bed with a nightstand to the left of it. At the end of the bed was a old medium sized chest. Besides that there wasn't much else in the room besides a door which you assumed led to a closet or bathroom.

"My daughter took most of her things with her when she moved out a few months ago." Isabel explained as she led you further into the room.

You nodded and followed Isabel towards the bed.

"You can sleep in here for the night. There are some of my daughter's old clothes in the dresser. You're welcome to borrow them." Isabel said with a smile as she turned around to face you.

"Thank you." You said quietly while watching as Isabel began to make her way out of the room.

"It's fine. If you need anything I will be in the room down the hallway." Isabel said while walking out of the room and gently shutting the door behind her.

You stood there staring at the door for several minutes before slowly falling to your knees. You tightly shut your eyes and bit your lip in an attempt to keep yourself from crying.

You were afraid, confused, angry, and most of all sad. You didn't know what was going on. Before today your life had been normal; safe, but now your parents were dead and you were on the run from their killers and the strange masked men.

'What am I going to do now? How am I just suppose live like they wanted after everything thats happened?' You thought as your body began shaking as tears slowly fell down your face.

It was all just too much for you to take in. You just wanted this all to be a bad dream. You wanted-no needed, a way to escape this painful reality.

'Please...make it stop...it hurts too much to even think...' You thought as you silently begged for this torment to end. Finally, after two long hours of crying you found momentarily relief in the form of sleep.

                   ~timeskip~

You awoke in the early morning due to the light shining through the window onto your face.

'Wh-where am I?' You thought while  anxiously glancing around at the unfamiliar room.

Your confused state didn't last long though as memories of last night came rushing back.

A sad frown etched across your face as the memories caused fresh tears to come to your eyes. You blinked repeatedly in an attempt to keep the tears from falling.

As you struggled with trying to keep your emotions under control a knock sounded on the bedroom door. Blinking in confusion you looked to the door.

"Hey, I just finished making breakfast. After you get dressed you can come down and have some food." Came a familiar woman's voice from behind the door. You immediately calmed as you recognized the voice as Isabel's.

You cleared your throat before speaking, "O-oh okay. Thanks... I'll be down in a few."

"Alright sounds good dear." Isabel said before her footsteps could be heard softly padding away from the door.

Sighing quietly you stood upon from your spot on the floor. After standing up you slowly made your way to the dresser. Once reaching the dresser you opened one of the drawers to find a surprising amount clothes within it.

Shifting through the clothes you settled on a plain gray shirt and a pair of black jeans. You then made your way to the door in the corner of the room.

'I hope it's a bathroom.' You thought to yourself as you turned the handle of the door. The door opened with a a creak to reveal a bathroom.

Smiling slightly you turned the light on before stepping inside. After stepping in the bathroom you to take your dirty clothes off. As you took the clothes off you caught a glimpse of yourself in the mirror and jumped at the sight.

You looked like a complete mess. Your hair was ratty and your face was stained with tears and a bit of dirt. Not to mention your body had several random bruises and scrapes littering it. Overall you looked a bit like a crazy person.

You decided that you better make yourself look somewhat presentable. After all you didn't want to scare the people who had took you in anymore than you probably already have.

Turning on the sink you splashed the cool water on your face to rinse the dirt off. Once done with that you dried your face with a towel that was setting on the counter. You then began to comb through your hair with your fingers until all the knots were out.

After that you put the clothes you got from the dresser on. The clothes were a little baggy but besides that they were fine. Now dressed you looked yourself over in the mirror. Deciding that you looked halfway decent you began to make your way to the kitchen.

Within about five minutes you had finally reached the kitchen. You were greeted with a smile from Isabel and a nod from her husband.

You smiled slightly at them and remained standing by the doorway, unsure of what to do.

"Well don't be shy! Come and get some food." Isabel said as she put a fried egg, toast, and some strawberries on a plate. She then handed it to you.

"Oh thank you." You said with a small smile as you took the plate from Isabel. Isabel smiled back before making two more plates for herself and Jamie. She then brought the plates over to the table and sat down beside Jamie. You followed behind her and sat down in the chair across from her.

After setting down you began to eat your food. You didn't get to eat dinner last night so you were very hungry.

As you ate your food, you listened to Isabel and Jamie who began talking shortly after setting down.

"Since the weather's suppose to be nice today, I think I'll work on the garden." Isabel said to Jamie between bites of her food.

"You sure? I thought it was suppose to rain today." Jamie said in response to Isabel.

"No I don't think so... we can just check the weather channel to make sure though." Isabel said while standing up with her plate and walking into the living room.
Jamie nodded his head and stood up with his plate before making his way to the living room as well. Before living the kitchen he turned to look at you.

"Were going to eat in the living room so we can watch the weather channel. You're welcome to join us." Jamie said before walking out of the kitchen.

You stared after them for a few moments before shrugging and continuing to eat your food. After finishing your food you stood up and walked in to the kitchen to get more. You grabbed another egg and some more strawberries then made your way to the living room.

You stepped into the room to see Jamie and Isabel setting on the couch. Isabel was eating her food while Jamie was flipping through the channels on the t.v.

"Oh here. You can set with us." Isabel said upon noticing you as she began pushing Jamie over to make room for you.

"Oh no. It's alright, I'll just set here." You said with a polite smile as you you took a seat in the arm chair that was to the left of the couch.

"You sure? We don't mind moving over to make room for you." Jamie said as he clicked onto a channel as Isabel nodded in agreement at what he said.

"Shoot. Wrong channel." Jamie then said as he started to click out of the channel he had accidentally gotten onto.

"No wait, the news channel is alright. After they talk about the news they usually talk about the weather for the day." Isabel said as she placed her hand on Jamie's to stop him from clicking out of it.

"Oh right, sorry I forgot about that." Jamie said as he placed the remote down on the coffee table.

"It's fine." Isabel said as she focused her attention on the t.v. as a breaking news sign appeared across the bottom of the screen.

You noticed the breaking news signs upon the t.v. as well and silently listened as the news reporter began speaking.

"Breaking news. Last night the bodies of Mrs. and Mr. (Last names)  were found dead in their house after reported complaints of gunshots from their neighbors. Their eighteen year old daughter (YN) (Last name) was no where to be found in the house. Due to the girls absence investigators think that she is somehow connected to the murder of her parents. They have asked for people to call the police station if they have any information regarding the girls whereabouts." The reporter spoke as a picture of your parents and a picture of you flashed across the screen.

You felt as if your heart momentarily stopped at the reporters words.
'I'm suspected of killing my parents?' You thought in disbelief as you stared at the t.v.

'Wait...they didn't say anything about my dogs. Could they still be alive?' You thought hopeful before your eyes widened.

'What will jamie and Isabel think of the news?' You thought growing anxious as you quickly turned to them.

They were both standing up with disgusted and shocked looks upon their faces.

"Wait! I can explain!" You said while quickly standing up, causing your plate to clatter to the floor beside your feet.

"We should have never of let you in our house." Jamie said as he took a step in front of Isabel protectively.

"No! Please you don't understand, I didn't-." You began to say frantically before you were cut off by Jamie.

"Be quite!" Jamie yelled angrily at you before turning to Isabel who had been silent the entire time.

"Isabel call the police station and tell them we have the (last names)'s daughter." Jamie said before walking over to you.

He roughly grabbed you by your arm and began yanking you towards the stairs. You started to struggle against his grip.

"(YN), don't. If you try to escape it will make you look worse to the police." You heard Isabel speak from behind you in the living room.

You tilted your head so that you could see Isabel's face but she wasn't looking at you. Instead, she was staring down at her phone as she dialed the police stations number into it.

Silently agreeing with Isabel's statement you stopped struggling and allowed Jamie to lead you up stairs. He roughly yanked you along as he brought you to the bedroom you stayed in the night before.

Once reaching the room he opened the door and shoved you inside before slamming the door behind you.

You stumbled into the room and turned your head towards the door as you heard a click from the outside of it.

'I didn't know there was a lock on the outside of the door.' You thought to yourself as you recognized the clicking sound to be that of lock.

'What am I going to do now?' You thought to yourself as you anxiously stared at the door.

'Maybe if I explain my side of the story to the police they will believe me and help me find my parents killers.' You thought with hope as you turned around and walked to the bed.

Reaching the bed you stepped up onto it. You then crawled over to the window so that you could watch for the police.

'I just hope they believe me or else I'm screwed...' You thought as you brought your legs to your chest and placed your head atop your knees.
