Sans' Past!!! :O
At first, the puzzle confused me. I mean, there is nothing but x's; divided by rocks. 'Well, at least Papyrus was nice to put a sign up.' I smiled to myself, walking towards the sign:
Turn every X into an O.
Then press the switch.
However, it wasn't Papyrus' hand-writing. I ignored the peculiar-ness of the sign and went on with the puzzle. Now that the sign explained what I should do, I can finish this puzzle; easy peasy. I walked forward to the nearest X, went around to step on the last X, and then stepped on the switch. I heard a clicking noise and saw that the unnoticeable spikes went down; revealing the puzzle-loving skeleton. Once the spikes clicked, Papyrus quickly turned around to face me. He seemed frustrated that his puzzle didn't ensnare me.
¨WHAT!? HOW DID YOU AVOID MY TRAP?¨ I shrugged in response; not wanting to tell him that someone told me how to avoid the trap. 'You have to give the skeleton some dignity, right?'
¨AND, MORE IMPORTANTLY....... IS THERE ANY LEFT FOR ME???¨ I grew nervous because I knew he was speaking of his spaghetti. I wanted to tell him that I had to leave it since it was frozen to the table..........But......he would think I didn't like it and refused to eat it. I internally freaked out in my head.
'Oh my god! Just lie to him!!!'
'I don't know, Chara...........'
'Just pick something!!!!'
I looked up at Papyrus as he waited, eagerly, for my response. I thought about what I should say before finally responding.
¨I left it.¨
He looked down at me, astonished. 'Did I say the right thing?' 'We're about to find out.'
¨REALLY!? WOWIE........YOU RESISTED THE FLAVOR OF MY HOMECOOKED PASTA..........¨ 'Oh god, I messed up.' 'Get ready to reset, Lily.' ¨JUST SO YOU COULD SHARE IT WITH ME??? FRET NOT HUMAN! I, MASTER CHEF, PAPYRUS......... WILL MAKE YOU ALL THE PASTA YOU COULD EVER WANT!¨ he exclaimed happily with a laugh before leaving, once again.
'Aw! He's so sweet!'
'So sweet he could give me a cavity! Come on, we have to keep moving so I don't have to hear his annoying voice!'
¨He's better company than you, at least.¨ I growled to myself.
'I heard that!' 'Wasn't trying to hide it.' I responded with a smirk. I can tell from the angry thoughts I've been receiving that Chara's mad. But, even though I don't like being mean, talking down to her was the highlight of this adventure, so far. I walked away from the puzzle area and as I came to the next place, Papyrus was there to greet me; once again.
¨MY BROTHER STARTED A SOCK COLLECTION RECENTLY. HOW SADDENING.......... SOMETIMES I WONDER WHAT HE WOULD DO..........WITHOUT SUCH A COOL GUY TAKING CARE OF HIM???¨
'Oh really? Who's the cool guy? Can I meet him?' I mentally imagined a super soaker spraying and I heard an internal screech in my head. I bit my lip to contain the giggles that would've escaped. He proceeded to laugh once again and I went on my way to get to this Snowdin town. I saw a random switch on one of the pine tree'slimbs and flicked it. As I was about head forward, Papyrus stopped me.
¨HUMAN! HMMM....... HOW DO I SAY THIS............ YOU WERE TAKING A LONG TIME TO ARRIVE, SO........... I DECIDED TO IMPROVE THIS PUZZLE...........BY ARRANGING THE SNOW TO LOOK MORE LIKE MY FACE. UNFORTUNATELY, THE SNOW FROZE TO THE GROUND. NOW THE SOLUTION IS DIFFERENT! AND, AS USUAL, MY LAZY BROTHER IS NOWHERE AROUND. I SUPPOSE WHAT I AM SAYING IS........... WORRY NOT, HUMAN!¨ he assured me; posing heroicly. ¨I , THE GREAT PAPYRUS, WILL SOLVE THIS CONUNDRUM! THEN WE CAN BOTH PROCEED! MEANWHILE, FEEL FREE TO TRY THE PUZZLE YOURSELF! I'LL TRY NOT TO GIVE AWAY THE ANSWER!!!¨
At that, I was a little confused about how I should do this. I clicked the button, to see if there were any hidden hints I should look for. Once I stepped on the button, all the X's lit up into green O's and Papyrus clapped happily at me.
¨WOW!!! YOU SOLVED IT!!¨ I could hear an internal facepalm from the demon child and I laughed at her reaction. She continued to grumble angry nonsense while Papyrus started talking.
¨AND YOU DID IT ALL WITHOUT MY HELP......... INCREDIBLE! I'M IMPRESSED!!! YOU MUST CARE ABOUT PUZZLES LIKE I DO! WELL, I'M SURE YOU'LL LOVE THE NEXT PUZZLE THEN! IT MIGHT EVEN BE TOO EASY FOR YOU!!¨ he cackled and ran away. I let out a small giggle at the excitable skeleton and walked around the puzzle to meet Sans, who is near the exit. He waved at me, nonchalantly.
¨good job on solving it quickly. you didn't even need my help. which is great, 'cause i love doing absolutely nothing.¨ I laughed at his attitude and smiled like it was a good sign. But, he looked away and looked to where Papyrus left, sighing. I looked down; the guilt from our previous conversation bubbling up.¨H-Hey, Sans?¨
¨hmmm?¨
¨Sorry about what I asked earlier.¨ I apologized, my eyes turning glossy with tears. ¨I never meant to hurt your feelings. I just wanted to know if you knew a human.¨ He looked down, sadly, and shoved his hands in his pockets. I was about to apologize further but Sans stopped me.
¨i have............¨ he answered, his pinprick eyes never leaving the icy floor. ¨actually, i 'met' a lot of humans.¨
My eyebrows furrowed in confusion and I tilted my head. ¨Why do you say it like that?¨ He tensed up when I asked that. He dropped his hands down at his side, his hands closing into a shaky fist. His eyes closed, briefly, before filling up with a blue, transparent liquid. I was startled by Sans' change in emotions and watched as he broke down in front of me. He clenched and unclenched his hands as he pressed his back onto the nearest pine tree. Now, the tears came down his cheekbones and he covered his face with one hand, letting a sniffle come out.
I bit my lip softly as I contemplated what I should do. Before I could realize what I was doing, I quickly pulled Sans into a hug. My head on his shoulder and my still-bruised arms wrapped around his jacket covered torso. He flinched when he felt the hug; almost not sure what to do. I rubbed my hands up and down his back; trying to soothe the saddened skeleton. I embraced his smell, the smell of ketchup and, surprisingly, cologne. I didn't even want to know how he got cologne, so I continued to comfort him. After some time, Sans embraced me tightly; sobbing into my new shirt and grabbing fistfuls of it.
I started to whisper words of comfort to him. ¨Ssshh~ It's okay............I'm sorry for asking.....¨ I whispered softly. I continued this until he started sobbing out words.
¨i-i..........i could've s-saved them.........i could've........i-i could've.....¨
¨Could have what, Sans?¨ I asked, pulling away from the hug and looking straight in his eyes. He started rubbing his eyes and crying softly. He refused to look up at me. I sighed softly and grabbed his chin, making him look at me.
¨Sans. What could've happened?¨ He looked down for a little while and looked back up, pulling my hands away from his chin. I scooted away since we were now on the floor. He watched me scoot a little bit and waited for me to get comfortable. My shirt is now wet on my shoulder but I tried to ignore it; only pulling my shirt down before paying attention to what Sans has to say.
¨i-i............i don't remember too much, but i can tell you what i remember.¨ He took a deep breath before continuing. ¨i helped kill some of the humans that fell down here.¨ I gasped and looked at him wide-eyed. He had his hands up to let him continue. ¨i didn't have any choice. i-i.........i was made to kill humans. a scientist was training me to attack a human. at first,........... i WANTED to kill a human.¨ he explained, his voice turning darker. My eyes looking down to avoid the stare he gave me. ¨but...............that was because i was told that humans are ruthless killers. they said humans would go to WARS with their own kind! and,....for a while.........i believed that. but, when i saw a human, for the first time................ they were....befriending monsters. the kid was nice and had love, not LOVE.¨ I looked at him, bewildered by LOVE.
¨What's LOVE?¨
He sighed and looked up at me, his expression becoming more intense by the second. ¨i can't tell you.......sorry, kid-¨
¨Lily.¨
¨what?¨ he asked, his 'eyebrows' furrowing in confusion. I inhaled some air and looked up at him, biting my lip hard at his stare.
¨That's my name. I think it's a little rude if you call me 'kid'. So........ my name's Lily.¨ I said, smiling softly and playing with the tips of my hair. He looked at me and sent a playful wink at me.
¨well, that name.........ROOTS you~¨ I pouted and pushed him playfully.
¨Seriously, Sans?! You're such a bonehead.¨ I laughed.
He smirked at me. ¨well, this 'bonehead' knows how to play an instrument. Wanna guess?~¨
¨Sans.........is it the.......xylo-BONE?¨ I remarked with a smug grin. He chuckled but shook his head.
¨i was gonna say the trom-BONE but i guess you had other plans. besides, i couldn't carry that around.¨ he started emptying his pockets, proving there was no room for a xylophone. Stuff that fell out of his pockets were bottles of ketchup and ketchup packets. I smirked, my pun-making senses kicking to overdrive.
¨Yea, I guess you're right. A xylophone isn't really PACKET-sized.¨ I got up, playfully throwing a ketchup packet at his face. I laughed at how the packet hit him square between the eyes and he watched the packet fall, dumbfounded. Then, he chuckled and picked up the packets and bottles.
¨if you keep KETCHUP-ing like this, you'll be as good as me!¨ At that, we left, saying farewell and going our separate ways; once again.
