Difference Between Myth and Reality
Lily was just a child when she fell down Mount Ebott. She never knew of the story of monsters and humans. People around her neighborhood refused to tell her anything about the war. The only thing that Lily knew about were the stories. The myths. The legends, she would call it. Even though the lack of knowledge on the war would satisfy anyone, it caused great distress to the young girl. Her mind was clouded with curiosity on why the monsters were sent to the Underground. She could've been like every other girl and only worry about making friends and playing with the other children. But, Lily always had a feeling she was not like the others. It was a gut instinct.
She never had a lot of friends. And it was not only of her appearance. I mean, sure, she had long wavy brown hair that would imitate the dark waves of the sea whenever she walked. It wasn't her chocolate brown eyes that were filled with kindness and innocence. Neither was it because of her tanned complexion, high cheekbones, or rosy cheeks. No, it was something much deeper; something that Lily cannot comprehend.
Lily was special. Unlike other kids, she can handle the cold breeze of winter without the warmth of a fluffy coat. She could walk from home to school and back to home without a sign of developing a cold. Children would look at her, strangely as Lily would walk to school, alone, without a coat. So, they would bully her and giver her names like 'Frosty' and such, anything to make other kids join in the teasing. But, that is not the end of it. While other girls were interested in dolls and makeup, Lily would spend her free time drawing fantastical creatures and listening to music. Adults and children alike were puzzled by such a sight; often looking down at the small girl. However, Lily never noticed the weird glances she received and the murmurs of adults when they see her.
She just continued drawing creatures that were both peculiar yet magical. Like last week, Lily drew a humanoid goat with a long purple dress, kind eyes, a loving smile, and an insignia on her dress. The girl remembers that specific symbol from a story one of the elderly ladies told her. That lady's name was Naomi. Everyday, Lily would visit Naomi at her small, quaint house. Naomi would greet the child, kindly and tell stories of the monsters on the surface while they had cookies and tea on the lady's front porch. Naomi told her about the queen of the monsters, that goat woman from the child's drawing. The old lady proceeded to tell Lily about how she and the queen would visit each other.
¨She was a very kind monster, one of the most jolly monsters I have ever seen!¨ Naomi continued to explain.
¨What did she look like, Miss Naomi?¨ Lily asked curiously, taking a sip of the Golden Flower Tea.
The old lady chuckled at her eagerness and went on. ¨Well.......¨ She paused, adjusting herself in the porch swing. ¨She looked like a goat, but she can walk ON TWO LEGS!¨
¨Two legs?!¨
¨Yes, ma'am. She has white, fluffy fur all over her body. A beautiful pair of ruby eyes, the sweetest smile you will ever see, and a purple robe with a symbol of the monsters.¨
Now that peaked the girl's interest. ¨Miss Naomi?............¨
¨Yes, my child.¨ The lady smiled, pulling a strand of grey hair behind her ear and adjusted her pink apron.
¨What does the symbol look like?¨ the girl asked, leaning out of her seat with a sugar cookie in between her two small fingers.
Naomi though for a moment and then, idea came to her. ¨Come with me, child.¨ she said, walking into her house; leaving the plate of cookies and cup of tea on the coffee table. Lily followed, leaving her plate and cup as well. As they walked through the old woman's house, there were a lot of pictures of her and her family. Naomi was a widow; traumatized by the death of her husband during a war and the death of her son due to leukemia. This troubled the widow so much that she decided the best way to cope was to hang pictures beyond pictures of her husband and son. It helped some, but the scar was still beyond repair.
As Lily was looking through the pictures, Naomi gestured the young girl into the living room; where she held a cardboard box. Curiously, the girl hurriedly made her way to the old woman and the mysterious box.
¨Now, listen to me. This box is very special to me. It holds a lot of memories of when monsters were up in the Surface.¨ Naomi explained.
¨But, I thought you were just telling stories. I didn't think they were real!¨ the girl exclaimed. She was shocked. All those stories of the monsters, Lily thought they were just what they are: stories. She really didn't think they were real!
Naomi sighed. ¨This must be alot to take in, child. But, I trust you with these treasures of mine. I can't hold on to these for long.¨ She handed the small child the box.
¨This will tell you everything you need to know about the monsters. Do not believe what people tell you about them, monsters are our friends. And, I want you to continue to think that. Do you swear to me you'll never hurt a monster? No matter how mean and scary they are?¨ the woman asked, holding Lily's small hands in her wrinkly ones.
Lily still couldn't believe that the monsters were real! But, she thought about what Naomi said. Could I spare the life of a monster, no matter what? she thought deeply. According to what Naomi says, monsters were nice and only sought peace between them and the humans. After a long period of thinking, Lily made up her mind.
¨I promise, I will protect and love monsters. No matter how mean, scary, and weird they are!¨ Lily swore, her right hand raised up.
Naomi smiled at the small child and, after some more stories, helped the child bring the old mementos of her past. What Lily didn't know was that things were going to take a turn for the worst. But, she doesn't know that. Yet.
Naomi's POV:
I feel bad for leaving that sweet child all alone. But, I had no choice. I sighed, sadly. At least Lily can keep them; although it makes no difference now. The police are going to come busting through my door because of what I have been telling this girl. From what I heard, there have been complaints about Lily drawing the monsters I have told her about. I chuckled, that girl always had a talent for drawing. I hope she becomes an art teacher when she gets older.
Thinking of the girl, just made my situation even harder. There, on the dining room table, was a container of pills. Not just any ordinary pills, cyanide pills. I opened the cap, slowly; almost doubting this decision. But, if I don't do this, I will be caught and that will put the girl in even more danger. She sighed. It's a good thing I sent a note to her house before she left, I thought. It was sad how this girl was all alone, in that house. No parents, no siblings. She was an orphan, a child who ran away from home. After putting the cap down, I tipped the container and watch the two pills fall into the palm of my hand.
I chuckled, tears stinging my eyes. ¨Oh my! I am pretty old. I guess my death was delayed before!¨ I laughed, tears streaming down my wrinkled cheeks. As I looked down at the pills that would determine my fate, I thought about all those times I spent with the monsters. How I would always help with their garden, drink tea, and talk about the weather and what not. I smiled happily. ¨I will miss you, Toriel and Asgore. I will tell Asriel and Chara you missed them...........¨ Before taking the pills to my lips, I took the picture that Lily made for me. It was of me, her, and Toriel baking a pie. My smile grew bigger and more tears came down, as they landed on the drawing. ¨Please,........ keep your promise....... Lily........¨
