29. Teenage Kicks
"That'll teach you to mock my buns of steel," Harry murmured huskily into my neck, half an hour later.
I pushed him off me and he rolled over onto his back on the bed. "Well if that was punishment, I wish I'd done it sooner," I said, sitting up. "OK now seriously, I have got to get a move on." I went into the bathroom and switched the shower on. I jumped in before it had properly warmed up and squealed at the cool water running over my hot skin. I had literally the quickest shower in history, and wrapped a towel round me as I went back into my bedroom to get dressed. I threw a clean towel at Harry and he winked at me as he slipped past me and went into the bathroom. Damn, that wink again. My knees wobbled a bit every time he did it.
I went into the kitchen and threw 4 slices of bread into the toaster, then went back to the bedroom and dried myself off. I pulled on a pair of leggings and a chiffon top, and my black chunky boots. I ran a brush through my hair and pulled it up into a messy ponytail, leaving a few wisps down around my face. I quickly put some makeup on and heard the shower switch off. I went back into the kitchen and quickly buttered the toast and was putting it onto a plate when Harry came into the kitchen wearing last night's clothes. He looked mouth-wateringly gorgeous.
"You look great," he said, as I handed him the plate with the toast on. "What time do you have to leave?"
"Anytime in the next 10 minutes," I said. "I can get on the tube, you don't have to drive me."
"I'd like to," he said, sincerely.
The butterflies in my stomach were back with a vengeance. "OK, well thanks, if you're sure," I smiled.
I entered the last few numbers into my laptop, saved and closed the application, and stuffed everything back into my work bag. We finished the toast and I grabbed my phone, bag and keys and smiled at Harry.
"Ready?" he asked.
"Yep," I replied. I pulled on my biker jacket and we headed out the door and down the stairs. He blipped the Range Rover as we walked across the car park and opened the door for me to climb in. He got in himself, started the car and backed out of the space. I gave him the postcode to my office and he tapped it into his Sat Nav, then pulled a pair of sunglasses out of the driver's door compartment and slipped them on.
"What are you going to do now?" I asked.
"I'll head home and probably get my head down for a couple of hours, seeing as I didn't get much sleep last night," he said, glancing at me and smirking.
"Well you've only got yourself to blame for that," I said airily. "At least you can go home and sleep. I have a full day's work ahead of me."
He chuckled. "I feel your pain."
Our conversation was interrupted by an incoming call. I glanced at the dashboard. Omfg. Incoming call - Louis Tomlinson.
My eyes widened and my heart lurched. I opened my mouth in excitement and turned to look at Harry, who chuckled again. The Directioner in me was about to make an embarrassing appearance.
He pressed a button and said, "Morning Lou."
"Oh you're awake then," Louis's voice came through the speakers. I opened my mouth wide and squeezed my eyes shut in a silent scream.
"Yeah," Harry said, grinning at my reaction.
"You still at your mum's?" Louis asked.
"Nah, I'm in London," Harry said. "I came back yesterday."
Louis cackled. "Ahhh no way, she said yes to the date then?" I snapped my head up and looked at Harry. I was seriously about to scream in uncontrollable excitement.
Harry cleared his throat and a faint blush tinged his cheeks. "Uh, yeah she did. Actually she's in the car now and you're on speaker."
"Ohhh," Louis said.
"Yeah, do me a favour Lou and say hi, will you? She's a big fan."
I stared at Harry and shook my head in disbelief. I wanted the ground to open and swallow me up.
"Hi, Jess," Louis's voice came through the speakers.
"Hi Louis," I squeaked back, as normally as I could.
"He's a dick isn't he," Louis said.
"Yep," I said, without hesitation, and Louis laughed.
"What time are we flying tonight?" he asked Harry.
"Like 8.30 or something," Harry replied, looking at me and grinning at my giddiness.
"Yeah thought so. OK I'll catch up with you later when you're not busy."
"Bye Lou."
"Bye. Bye Jess," Louis added.
"Bye," I called back.
Harry ended the call and turned to look at me again. "Stop looking at me," I said, turning my face away and grinning out of the window so he couldn't see the stupid expression on my face.
"So you weren't lying when you said you were a Louis girl," he teased.
"He's my second favourite," I admitted, without turning round. "After Liam," I added mischievously. I sneaked a glance at him and he was shaking his head at me in mock disappointment. I laughed.
"My ego is seriously bruised after the battering you've given it," he said.
"Oh please," I snorted. "We've already had this conversation. Your ego is just fine. You need no help in that department."
"I'll be getting a complex about my ability to please the ladies," he teased.
I rolled my eyes. "Where have you been the past 12 hours? I couldn't fake it that many times." I stopped dead when I realised what I'd just said. He burst out laughing.
My face turned beetroot. "I need a mute button," I muttered.
"No, you don't," he laughed. "You put me in my place every time. I love it."
I grinned, my face still the colour of a tomato.
We turned onto the street my office was on, and crawled along in the traffic. "It's just up here on the left," I said. "On the next block."
"Is there anywhere to stop outside?" he asked.
"There's a pedestrian crossing a few metres further up, and it's always stop-start at this time in the morning," I said. "I'll be able to jump out when the lights change."
He nodded. "I've really enjoyed our dates, Jess," he said.
"Me too," I blushed. "Thanks again for dinner last night. It was amazing."
"My pleasure," he said.
"And thanks for embarrassing me in front of Louis," I said. "It'll only take me a year of therapy to get over that."
He laughed. "Also my pleasure."
We were coming up to the block my office was on, and I checked my appearance in the mirror and took hold of my bag strap. The lights up ahead changed to red and the traffic began to slow. "I'll jump out when it stops," I said.
"OK," he nodded. The car pulled to a stop and he put the hand brake on and took his sunglasses off. I leant over and kissed him fully on the lips, not caring whether or not I was being cool. Hell, this was the last chance I was ever going to have to kiss Harry Styles from One Direction. I was grabbing it with both hands. He kissed me back equally as enthusiatically. "Its been great, Jess," he whispered.
I nodded, my face millimetres from his. "Yeah it has." I gave him one last kiss on the lips and pulled away, putting my hand on the door handle. "Have an amazing tour."
"Thanks, I will," he said. Out of the corner of my eye I saw the lights change to green again.
"Bye," I said, then I leaned over to him again and we kissed gently.
"Bye," he echoed. I opened the car door and jumped out. I closed the door behind me and he put his sunglasses back on, slid the car into gear and slowly moved off with the traffic. He looked over at me and raised his hand in a small wave. I waved back, and turned round to walk up the steps to my office. I bumped straight into Sarah and let out a little squeak of surprise.
"Who was that?" she asked, looking at Harry's Range Rover moving away along the street.
"Uh, no one," I stammered, quickly walking up the steps.
"Don't tell me fibs!" she squealed. "Was that your date from last night?!"
"Um.." I cleared my throat nervously. "Maybe." I stupidly hadn't prepared myself for this at all.
"Oh my God," she said. "Nice car. Did he stay the night?"
Shit. I really hadn't thought this through at all. "No comment," I said lamely, striding through reception and into the office.
"I want details at lunchtime!" she called out as she stopped at her desk and I continued on to mine. I pretended I hadn't heard her as I sat down and pulled my laptop out of my bag.
"Details of what?" Gary's face popped up over his screen.
"Nothing!" I called.
"Oh yeah, the date you were in such a rush to get to," he smirked, wiggling his eyebrows.
"The same date who dropped her off in his Range Rover this morning," Sarah's voice came across the office.
"Ooohh really Jess?" Gary asked.
"Harry Styles drives a Range Rover," Sarah teased. "Coincidence.....?"
They both laughed and my face flushed red and I dropped my phone on the floor.
"Ahhh, what would poor Harry say if he knew your affections now lie with someone else?" Sarah asked sadly, shaking her head.
"He'd be devastated," Gary played along, looking sadly back at Sarah.
"You're not funny," I sighed at the pair of them, and they both erupted into laughter again. I decided to ignore them both, and opened my laptop and switched it on.
It was a good job I had finished my work earlier this morning, because I was neither use nor ornament to anyone between 9am and 12pm. I emailed everything over to my boss and faffed about with some new application requests, but my heart wasn't in it at all. My mind kept wandering back to my date with Harry. The effect he'd had on me was profound; everything about him agreed with me. At that moment, I couldn't ever imagine being attracted to anyone else ever again. And knowing I woud never see him again, other than on stage or on TV, was seriously depressing me. I felt so low I even considered asking my boss if I could take the rest of the day as holiday, but decided I only had a few more hours to get through until it was the weekend, and then I would have 2 whole days to mope about to my heart's content.
At 12 o'clock I locked my laptop and stood up to go and grab some lunch. I picked up my bag and scooted through the office before anyone could say anything to me. I went to M&S Food again and picked out my usual, and went to stand in the queue. I pulled my phone out while I waited and my heart practically leapt out of my chest. 1 new message from Harry Styles.
