Past Nisse (yon)

Jacob sat by the lake in silence. Cicadas chirped all around him as the leaves rustled gently in the wind. The summer sun beat down hard on him, making his body wish for a nice cool breeze to cool him down. He stared into the clear water, noticing a few fish underneath the algae. Summer break had already started for his school and he couldn't be happier. Yet at this moment, he felt depressed. He scooted forward then dipped his finger into the water. It was cool.

He hadn't seen Kevin in ages. The last time he did, he was kicked out of his world. He didn't go for an entire week, scared that Kevin was still mad. After that he did come back, but he never saw his flower path. He came a few more times, but it was the same result. So he stopped coming, completely convinced Kevin no longer wanted anything to do with him. Yet here he was in that very forest, sitting in front of the lake that brought them together.

Coldness enveloped his body as he felt himself sinking into nothingness. He opened his eyes, taking in the view of the water's surface above him. It was quite a sight. The fish were lucky to get to see a sight like this everyday. It was then he remembered the fish. One came into sight, passing through his legs. His body finally gave in, opening his mouth as it craved oxygen. Water filled his lungs, causing all sorts of problems within. His mind screamed at his body to swim up, to free itself from danger. He refused.

Jacob closed his eyes again, seeing that this was the end of the line for him. He didn't intend for this to happen, but it was his own fault for being careless. He wouldn't even get a chance to say goodbye to his family. Not even Kevin. No one would find him for days just to add on to his misery. As he said his final goodbye, he finally blacked out.

Jacob harshly coughed up water as his body desperately gasped for air. He banged against his chest, getting rid of the water remnants in his lungs.

"You're okay... you're okay..." a voice whispered, relief and worry heard clearly in each word they spoke.

Jacob looked and saw Kevin staring at him with tears streaming down his face. He was saved. Was it Kevin or someone else? It didn't matter, what did was the fact he was alive.

"Can you speak...?" Kevin asked, pushing Jacob's damp hair out of his face. "Maybe not... just nod or shake, okay?"

Jacob nodded, wondering what he wanted to say. This was the first time they met after who knew how long.

"How did you almost drown...? Aren't you a good swimmer?" Kevin asked, checking him over.

"Carelessness..." Jacob muttered. "At least that's what I want to believe..."

"Huh? What do you mean?" asked Kevin in confusion. "Why can't you believe it?"

Jacob pursed his lips as he pulled his knees close to his chest. Kevin waited and waited, but received no response. He quietly sat beside Jacob then leaned against him. If he won't talk, then that was that.

"It's just stupid school stuff..." Jacob mumbled, leaning his head against Kevin's.

"Is it those kids again?" Kevin asked, now fully attentive.

"No..." Jacob said, earning a nod from Kevin. "Okay, it is. They're jerks..."

"What happened? What did they do?" Kevin pressed, getting up close in his face.

"Uh, see... I had a crush on this girl and... they told her untrue things about me..." Jacob replied, digging his finger in the dirt. "And then she told our class and you can guess the rest. What a great way to start summer break..."

"Did you tell an adult about it? Bullying isn't cool." said Kevin with an upset look.

"It's not bullying... I did tell my dad I guess. He said he'd talk to my mom about it and come to a decision that way." said Jacob. "But, I'm really glad I got to see you again. I really thought you hated me."

"Huh? Why would I hate you?" Kevin asked in confusion.

"Because of last time. You know, when you kicked me out. Then never showed up for so long." Jacob said just as confused.

"I'd never kick you out. And what do you mean I never showed up? You never showed up." Kevin retorted.

They looked at each other in disbelief. How could they have missed each other? Kevin could sense him from afar.

"Well, we're together now and that's what matters." said Jacob, giving Kevin a smile.

Kevin nodded in agreement then made Gust appear out of thin air.

"Want to go for a ride?" Kevin asked as Gust transformed into a cloud.

"Here? In the real world?" Jacob asked with wide eyes.

Kevin pulled him into the cloud which promptly took off into the sky. Kevin squealed in delight as Jacob held on for dear life. They zipped around in the air, having a bird's eye view of where Jacob lived. Jacob finally opened his eyes then looked down. Was this what it was like to fly like a bird? Why wasn't anyone pointing them out?

"They can't see us, well me actually. As long as you're touching me, you're invisible too." said Kevin, having heard his thoughts.

"Wow... I wish I had my camera..." muttered Jacob, seeing some amazing sights.

"Camera?" Kevin asked.

"Yeah! I took up photography as a hobby in the time we spent apart. I can't remember when exactly... Remind me to share the photos I took with you." said Jacob with a smile.

"Definitely! There's a lot I don't understand about your way of living and I'd love to learn." Kevin exclaimed as he had Gust fly down and fly over streets.

"Hey, maybe we should head back..." Jacob warned, seeing how close they were to buildings.

"Where do you live?" Kevin asked, looking around.

"Oh, way over- there!" Jacob squeaked as Gust had suddenly taken off at top speed.

The cloud lowered itself enough to allow Jacob to get off safely. Jacob weakly got off and was genuinely surprised by how easily he found his house.

"If you ever need an unbiased person to chat with, I'm always here, waiting in the forest." said Kevin, smiling wide. "Promise you'll visit me more frequently?"

Jacob returned his smile then linked their pinkies together.

"I promise. You'll never feel alone again." said Jacob, believing they'd never be apart.
