Past Nisse
Jacob walked around, stepping over tree roots and pushing branches out of his way. A tear fell from his eye as he sniffled. Where was his father? More tears fell as he continued to walk around, not knowing where to go.
He happened upon a small lake then took a seat beside it. He picked up a nearby stick and started swirling it around in the water. He was all alone. He was never going to find his way home. He finally burst into tears as he came to the realization. No one was coming for him. He briefly stopped crying at the sound of something falling into the water. He wiped his eyes and saw a hand briefly before it sunk. He hesitated before jumping in.
It was a child. He swam towards them and grabbed their wrist, pulling them up for oxygen. They lied motionless after he had placed them on land. He remembered his mother teaching about a situation like this. He put his limited knowledge to use and performed CPR. The child started to cough up water as Jacob watched them with concern and interest. Were they lost like him? The child had stopped coughing then finally met his eyes. Jacob was taken aback, finding himself getting lost in his round dark orbs they call eyes.
"Are you okay?" he finally asked, ending their staring game.
"Yes. Thank you." they replied.
"Are you lost too?" Jacob asked curiously.
The child shook their head.
"I heard someone crying, so I came to see." they replied before looking at the lake. "Then I accidentally fell in..."
"Then it's my fault. I'm so sorry..." mumbled Jacob, guilt eating at his young heart.
"No! It was my clumsiness." they said quickly, cupping his face. "Don't cry..."
Jacob sniffled as he looked at the child who smiled warmly at him.
"I'm Kevin. Who are you?" he asked.
"Jacob... Jacob Bae. I'm lost..." he responded, looking down at the ground.
"Do you want to play?" Kevin asked happily, now holding Jacob's hands.
"Play where...?" he asked in confusion.
Kevin simply helped him to his feet before pulling him along. Jacob finally stopped resisting as a flower path came into sight. Soon the flowers started to grow bigger before they formed an arch. The entire scenery changed once they passed under the arch. Jacob's eyes went wide as he took in the sight. A meadow full of flowers lied before them as butterflies and various small animals flitted about.
Jacob ran ahead into the butterflies, causing them the disperse in a beautiful fashion. Laughter filled the air as he chased a rabbit around in hopes of getting to hold it. He looked up then saw an entire playground made of plants waiting to be played on.
"Kevin, lets play!" Jacob said happily before running over.
Kevin ran over to join him as they played on the plant based equipment. Despite how it looked, it was pretty sturdy. Jacob laughed happily as Kevin pushed him on the swing. Kevin gave him a hefty push then gasped as Jacob had gone flying in the air. Jacob braced himself for impact then felt himself land on something soft.
"Flowers...?" he whispered, finding himself being cushioned by flossflowers.
"It's all my fault!" Kevin shouted, tears welling up in his eyes.
Jacob climbed off the flowers before running over to Kevin. Just before he could reach, roots suddenly shot up from the ground and encased Kevin in a sphere shaped wall.
"Kevin, it's fine. How were we to know the swing would send me flying?" Jacob said, trying to reach through the roots.
Kevin continued to cry, causing the wall to close in more. Jacob pulled his hand out with a pout.
"I won't play with you anymore if you won't let me in." said Jacob with a huff.
The wall parted enough for Jacob to enter. He squeezed himself in then gave Kevin a warm hug. Kevin had slowly stopped crying as he leaned into Jacob's hug.
"Kevin, what are you?" Jacob asked, taking note of the wilting roots and flower cushion.
"I'm a fairy..." he responded, meeting Jacob's eyes. "I live here."
Jacob looked as a house suddenly appeared in the field.
"Alone?" he asked, noticing he never saw any adults.
Kevin nodded, wiping his face free of tears.
"I've always been alone. Until now." said Kevin with a smile.
"Then I'll come visit you everyday!" exclaimed Jacob.
Kevin's eyes widened as they sparkled. Was he really?
"We're friends now and forever!" said Jacob, looking around.
Kevin watched as Jacob squatted down and started searching through the grass. He watched with interest as Jacob started doing something with his fingers. Jacob soon held out a flower ring to an awe struck Kevin.
"A symbol of our friendship!" Jacob declared, placing his hands on his hips.
Kevin squeaked happily as he hugged Jacob tight. Jacob noticed an orangish balloon flying in their direction. Kevin turned around then extended his hand out.
"Is that yours?" Jacob asked curiously.
"Mhmm. Watch what it can do! I call it Gust!" said Kevin before the balloon shifted into a cloud.
"Wow..." Jacob whispered in awe.
Kevin climbed onto the cloud then held his hand out for Jacob to take. Jacob was soon pulled onto the cloud then found themselves flying up in the sky. He tightly held onto Kevin as they zipped around. Jacob reached up and felt his fingers run through a cloud.
"Jacob!" a voice called out, causing Kevin's cloud to transform back into a balloon.
Another flower cushion caught the two kids as the voice called out again.
"Daddy?" Jacob answered, knowing the voice.
"It's time you returned..." Kevin whispered, holding his balloon close.
Jacob looked at Kevin in confusion. What did he mean? He wasn't given a chance to ask as he found himself sitting by the lake once more.
"Jacob! There you are!" his father called out, running to embrace his child.
"Daddy, guess what! I met a boy who's a fairy! He and I played until you came." said Jacob excitedly.
"You and that active imagination." said Mr. Bae as he led the way out.
"But it's true. His name is Kevin." said Jacob with a pout.
"You can tell your mother and I all about it when we get home." he said, knowing how imaginative their son could be.
