☾they propose [KURT]
Kurt, being the untraditional man he was, had not really intended on proposing to you. He'd dreamt of it many times, but had never really committed to a plan of action. When it happened, he didn't even have a ring to accompany the question. The urge had hit him quite spontaneously. Kurt had already called you his wife several times before that, and spoke animatedly about the life he planned to live with you.
You were sitting at your breakfast nook one morning, spooning bites of cereal into your mouth as you carefully juggled a novel in your other hand. Kurt awoke from the bedroom and ventured out donning a ratty Mudhoney t-shirt with baggy pajama bottoms. He began quietly observing you as you neglected to even look up from your book, too consumed by the words jumping off the pages.
As Kurt studied you, with your hair falling out of its messy bun and your chipped nail polished- fingers flipping pages, the words formed on the tip of his tongue when he realized that the human sitting before him was the only person he'd ever love.
It was you who held him when his stomach pained him to the point of tears. It was you who stroked his hair and promised that you'd never leave when drugs seemed to be the only thing that would stay. It was you who took the place of the family that had shunned him, and it was you who smiled with love when he kept you up playing guitar and toying with new lyrics.
"Y/n, will you marry me?" he suddenly blurted.
You looked up, astonished. You had heard what he said, but the words didn't seem to fit the context of an ordinary morning breakfast. What?" you asked, dumbfounded.
His face turned a light shade of pink as he suddenly considered the possibility of you saying no. An ache spread in his stomach and he felt sick, feeling that burning nausea he was so used to building up.
Kurt clenched his fists, remembering what it was like to watch his father turn his back on him. And then his mother shortly after. The two most painful rejections of his life had come from his parents. He couldn't stand another one from not just the love his life, but from the person he thought held the universe in their hands.
"Marry me," he repeated, although this time his voice quivered. He turned even more pink when he realized he had to admit to not having a ring. "I don't have a ring to give you or anything, but I'll get you one soon enough. This next check coming up from the last show, I promise. But for now, say you'll marry me, y/n."
You felt your face crumple, but it was with pure happiness. The image of you and Kurt standing together, uniting as one was seamed itself flawlessly in your head. From the moment you two had met, you'd always felt that that day would come.
"Of course," you whispered, before launching yourself at him, throwing your arms around his thin shoulders and clutching him to you. Like always, he folded into your embrace and sighed happily.
"Thought you were gonna say no," Kurt mumbled. You pulled away to place your hands on the sides of his face, smiling tearfully at the feel of his soft skin and faint trace of a beard.
"It's not just a yes. It's a million yes's, all crammed into one tiny little word."
Kurt smiled, your favorite kind of dreamy, Kurt smile, the one that made you feel lightheaded just looking at him. "Say it again," he said softly, this time with his mouth brushing against yours, the words whispering their way across your lips.
"Yes," you obliged, tilting your head to press your lips harder to his, tasting the mixture of cigarettes and his glass of morning root beer on his mouth and savoring every second of it.
