Chapter 1 - Between Realms

Jay’s POV

The first thing I could feel was that someone was on top of me. I groaned and pushed whoever they were off of me, and then opened my eyes. First I saw was it was Cole who was on top of me, argh. Second thing I saw, was that my hands were.. different. Like when The Overlord was transforming, he had those claw thingies, four of them? But I had five, not four. I flexed them, curious. They didn’t feel bad, just different. We all looked different. ‘What kind of place is this..?’ I thought to myself, standing up. Everyone was changed like me, and Kai was beginning to stir. I shook him. “Psst, hey, wake up!” I whispered.

“W-wha?” Kai woke with a start, sitting up suddenly. “Where-”

“We fell and transformed and-” I blurted out, worriedly. “I have no idea where we are and I think we’re not in the right realm-”

“Woah woah, calm down!” Kai said, snapping me out of my scared state. “What do you mean we transformed-” he lifted up a hand, and stopped talking. “Oh. I uh, get what you mean now… I wonder if we can still use our..?” He lifted up a hand and set it on fire. “Yeah, we can.”

“That’s good,” I said, sighing in relief. “I don’t know how we’d do without our powers!”

“No kidding,” Zane spoke up. Apparently he’d woken up too. “We have no idea where we are and whether or not we’ll need our powers. We should move on.” He stood up and helped Cole up as well.

“Alright,” Kai said, following.

“Aye aye,” I joked, right behind Kai. I peeked into the next room and there was a flower. I walked over to it. It looked like a mix between a buttercup and a daisy. I poked it. A face appeared on the middle, and I jumped back. “Gah!”

“Howdy!” The flower said, grinning.

“Howdy? What kind of flower talks? Are you possessed?” Kai asked, circling the flower, inspecting him.

“First of all, I’m not possessed, second of all, I do! I’m Flowey, Flowey the Flower!” It continued to grin, a glint in its eye.

“Flowey?” I laughed. “What kind of name is that?”

“It’s my name,” it said, seemingly straining to keep its cool. “What about you? What’re your names?”

“Jay,” I said, “and there’s Kai, Zane, and Cole.” Or at least, that was everyone that was here right now. Something in my gut told me that wouldn’t be a good idea to tell him that.

“Alright, well, you four have landed in the Underground! Mind if I teach you how it works here?” it offered, holding up a leaf like a hand.

Zane nodded. “That would be ideal,” he said. “Now that we know what Realm we are in, we should learn how to survive here.”

“Alrighty then!” it grinned again, lifting the other leaf. Suddenly, the world around us turned black and white, and there were different colored hearts in front of each of us. Zane’s was light blue, mine was dark blue, Kai’s was orange, and Cole’s was purple.

“Sweet, blue!” I said, as Cole looked at his.

“Aw, purple? Why not brown?” He asked, disappointed.

“Ha! I got my favorite color! Beat that, dirthead!” I taunted him, a smile on my face to try and show that it was just for fun.

“At least purple is better than blue, numbskull!” He shot back, grinning as well.

“What are these hearts for?” asked Zane, lightly poking Kai’s. Kai laughed as if he was just poked in a ticklish spot.

“H-hey, watch it-” Kai said in between laughs after Zane poked it two more times. He stopped after seeing Kai’s reaction.

“Sorry, Kai,” he apologized, and Kai nodded, showing it was fine. “But what are they? An extension of ourselves?” he asked the flower again, and it smiled wider.

“Close enough! Those hearts are your SOULs, the very culmination of your beings!” it explained, still with that big grin on its face, or whatever you would call it. “Your SOUL starts off weak-”

“Weak?” Cole scoffed. “I have super strength!”

“A-hem. Most of the time, it starts off weak,” the flower corrected, still grinning but sending a glare towards Cole, “but it can grow stronger with some LV.”

“What’s L-V?” I asked.

“It stands for LOVE, of course!” it explained happily.

I thought that LOVE might have been an acronym too, and it turned out Zane thought the same, because he whispered to Pixal, “See if you can figure out what that means, please.” It was barely loud enough for me to hear, so I didn’t think the flower heard it. It continued its speech.

“Down here, LOVE is shared through..” Five white bullet-like things appeared in the air as it winked. “Little white.. friendliness pellets! I can give LOVE to you through these!” I gave the others a look.

“We all take one, that sound fair?” Kai spoke out loud, and we nodded, and so did the flower, one of the ‘pellets’ disappearing with that.

“Alright, here we go!” the flower said, eyes glinting. The pellets were slowly sent to us, and I had the feeling that maybe I didn’t want to touch them. At the last second, I willed my heart to move out of the way, which it did. Looking at the others seconds before they got hit, they looked fine. And then they were falling to the ground, barely conscious. I gaped at the flower, which now had a sinister smile on its ‘face’.

“You- you tricked us!” I shouted in disbelief.

It laughed. “You idiots! In this world, it’s kill or be killed! It was easy to fool you!”

I readied my lightning. “Well I’m not going to stand here and just take it!” It saw me do this, and looked genuinely surprised.

“So, you’re wizards, huh? All the more reason to steal your SOULs!” it said gleefully, and that ticked me off. I was just about to use my lightning on it, but a fireball from the right beat me to it. I looked to my left. Kai was still on the ground, so who sent that flower..? I looked back to the right. There stood a goat lady, flames in hands. As soon as she saw me looking at her, the flames disappeared and her hands glowed green. She rushed over to us, putting a hand each on Kai and Zane. They immediately started to look a lot better. ‘What kind of element is that?’ I wondered, and then she looked up at me.

“Greetings, my child,” she said comfortingly, a small smile on her face.

“Who are you?” I asked, sitting down.

“I am Toriel, caretaker of the Ruins. I am sorry for what that heathen did, you did not deserve that,” she said, glaring at the spot where Flowey was.

I chuckled, just as Kai began to stir.
