You loved him to death, there was no doubt about that.

But, he didn't love you.

You knew it when you saw his electric blue eyes land on Nya for the first time, the dopey smile you adored creeping onto his face.

Oh how you wished he would smile at you like that.

Even after you two got together, you knew by the way he sometimes gazed at Nya for more than a few seconds that his heart belonged elsewhere.

Don't get him wrong, he thought he loved you when you two got together, and you hoped that he was right.

Maybe it wouldn't have hurt so bad if you hadn't hoped.

Jay Walker, elemental master of lightning, ex-boyfriend of (Y/n) (L/n), was never yours. You knew that. His heart always belonged to Nya.

Yet, you didn't hate her, and you could never bring yourself to hate Jay. You were just heartbroken.

The day your heart was wrenched out of your chest and torn in two was the day you two broke up. He didn't cheat, although you kind of wished he had.

It would have been easier to be mad at him.

It would have given you a wonderful excuse to be angry.

But he had to go and take away that reason for anger, though you knew it would be unlikely for Jay to ever cheat anyways.

"(Y/n).. I... I'm sorry, but... Well you see, I wanted to talk to tell you that I-I still like you! But.. I.. Please don't be mad, I really don't want to hurt you c-cause you're a great girl! And in the time we were together, I was so happy! But.. I don't think I love you anymore"

Those words, it seemed to be put on replay in your mind.

You couldn't even stand to see him anymore without wanting to cry, throw up, something.

So you locked yourself in your room, only coming out to eat every now and then; even that was minimal.

Outside your door, 5 concerned friends and an ex were discussing how to help you through your heartbreak, none of them wanted to see you suffer.

"Maybe we can make her some cookies?" Lloyd suggests, looking out to the group of ninja that sat around.

"Do you really think cookies would help?" Kai remarked from his position on the couch.

"Well, I don't see you offering any ideas, Kai" Jay says.

"I don't wanna hear it from the guy who started all of this. Why'd you have to go and break her heart Jay!" Kai says, rising from his seat.

"Guys" Zane started as Jay began to stand as well.

"I did it for her own good, Kai" Jay retorted, to which Kai scoffed.

"For her own good, right, like I believe that. You're just being selfish!" He yells back, balling his hands into a fist.

"I was not!"

"We're too! She loved you, and you dumped her!"

"Did not! It would have been cruel to lead her on like that!"

"You could have tried to work something out! (Y/n)'s a very reasonable girl!"

"I know she is but it wouldn't have worked!"

"You don't know that! She would have found something! She loved you for crying out loud!"

"I KNOW!! Don't you understand Kai?! Do you know how much it hurt to see the look on her face! I saw it in her eyes. I knew she loved me! I couldn't hold her back knowing I didn't love her back! She deserves better than that!"

The two had slowly stepped closer and closer to each other, to the point where their noses were close to touching.

Kai opened his mouth to yell back, but Nya abruptly stood and shoved her arms between the two, forcing them apart.

"Shut up both of you! Did it ever occur to you two knuckleheads that (Y/n)'s room is just down the hall and she can hear every word?!" Nya growled as the two backed away.

"You two are definitely not helping the situation any," Zane adds, looking at the two with a mix of stern and disappointment on his face. Cole nods in agreement, furrowing his eyebrows as Lloyd shakes his head.

The room fell silent, and in the back they could hear a muffled sobbing. Now the two felt very guilty, looking down at the ground in shame.

The room was silent for a moment, before Nya spoke up. "Kai, you started this argument, you go talk to (Y/n) and comfort her."

"What?! But Jay-"

"I don't want to hear another word about it! Besides, you two are close anyways, she'd probably open up to you more than anyone else." Nya says, pushing her brother in the direction and crossing her arms.

Kai looked down for a moment in consideration, before hesitantly approaching (Y/n)'s door. He gulped, a stone weighed in his gut as he knocked.

What was a few moments of silence felt like an eternity to Kai, then he heard a hoarse voice speak up. "Go away"

Kai felt a pang in his heart when you said that, being pushed away wasn't the greatest feeling. 'I probably deserve that for starting an argument' he thought to himself.

"Come on, it's me, Kai, you can talk to me." Kai says, forcing his voice to be more gentle.

Kai jumps a little at the sound, before hesitantly pushing the door open. He looks over at (Y/n), who was sitting on her bed.

Her hair was messy, face red from recent tears. (Y/n) ran her fingers through her hair in an attempt to make herself look at least a little more presentable.

"Don't, you look fine"

Kai thought no matter the state she was in, she was still beautiful.

Yea, the fiery ninja did have feelings for (Y/n), but in the time she was with Jay she seemed so happy that he couldn't bring himself to say anything.

Now, though, he decided now definitely was not a time to bring up his feelings. His focus was (Y/n) right now, not his feelings.

The bed sunk down a little as he sat. Kai glances over at (Y/n), who had found much interest in the floor at the moment.

"So, how are you holding up?" Kai asked, not knowing what else to say. He'd never had to comfort someone through a breakup before, but he's definitely going to try his best.

(Y/n) shrugs, "Alright" she replies, playing with the covers on her bed.

Kai raised an eyebrow at her, letting out a soft huff. "I don't believe you. Come on, tell me what's going on in that head of yours" He says.

(Y/n) sighed, pulling her legs up to her chest and resting her chin on her knees.

"I don't know, it just hurts I guess... I knew I'd never be good enough for him, I was just so stupid to think maybe, just maybe, it'd work out. Now look where I am" She scoffs, her eyes watering a little.

"Hey, you're not stupid. I mean, if anything Jay's the dumb one for missing out on all this" Kai says, gesturing to you.

She gives a light chuckle, wiping the tears from her eyes with the back of her hand. "What do you mean?" She asks.

"Well, just look at you, what's not to love?

First off, you're insanely gorgeous Second, you've got a wonderful personality, third you are loyal and loving to the end, fourth you're like, super smart, even if it's not the traditional school smarts.

Even if you think you aren't all of these things, they're true" Kai says, putting his hand on her shoulder.

"Hell, you've got me head over heels for you" He chuckles, before pausing. He just confessed to you, he was such an idiot.

(Y/n) was silent for a moment, and before Kai could say anything she spoke, softly. "...Kai... Do you.. like me?"

Kai gulped, before nodding. He looks into (Y/n)'s (E/c) eyes, which reflects a mix of emotions. She lowered her head, resting her forehead on his shoulder.

Her mind was a flurry. Within the few weeks of her breakup, Kai's constant texting, checking up on her, and talking had made her grow feelings for him.

But she was afraid.

She thought of Skylor, another potential love of his. Jay told her he loved her, but that faded. Will it be the same story with Kai?

Her heart throbbed at the thought, her wounds told her yes, his love will fade. But, there was the sliver of hope that she clung to.

Kai heard her draw in a shaky breath, and quietly asked

"If I told you that I love you back... Will you promise to never break me?"
