"Leaves of Jade"
Five days passed of the gang traveling to the jungle, and finally, they arrived at the edge. Lloyd’s eyes lit up as they began to walk under the jungle canopy; excitement rising. At long last, he did it! He was SO close to home! So close to showing his father all he had learned and accomplished!
"Woah..." Cole stared at the surroundings in awe. "I've never seen this much green in my entire life!"
"Nor have I..." chimed in Zane.
Morro and his tribe looked around in wonder as they walked further into the jungle. It looked just like their island- except... well, not dead and dying. It was truly beautiful... every shade of green imaginable covered the landscape, and the sun shining through the trees created a spectacular pattern that shown down upon them. Even in their weakened state, the Wind Tribe looked overjoyed to be somewhere that felt like home. Lloyd traveled slightly ahead of everyone else; jumping through the canopy just like he would always do. Suddenly, an arrow flew through the air, Zane only just using his powers to deflect it from his face. Jay looked at the weapon confused. It wasn't anything like the Fire Tribe was known for using. Before they could question it, a figure jumped down from the treetops. They wore a mask seemingly made from tree bark, and the armor was made from the same material. The markings that covered their body were nearly identical to Lloyd’s camouflage paint, except for a few more details, and it was in a lot more places. They pulled back the bow, aiming it at the group again, but Lloyd quickly jumped in between them. The figure lowered the weapon when they spotted the green ninja. Lloyd growled at the stranger, but quickly took notice of their bandaged torso. Lloyd’s emerald eyes scanned the person for a second before tilting his head. "Brad?"
The figure pulled their mask off with a look that was a mixture of shock, anger, confusion, and speculation. However, it quickly turned into more of anger when Nya moved slightly. His arrow aimed directly at her head once more. "Lloyd. Step. Away. From the monsters."
"What?! No! These are the other tribe leaders that father requested to meet. And they're not monsters- they're actually very nice people."
Brad snarled at the group, still looking upset by their presence and Lloyd’s willingness to side with them. "Do you not remember what happened last time someone from another tribe entered our village?"
The green eyed boy glanced down at his bandaged torso. Of course. How could he forget what happened last time? It was traumatizing. Poor Brad was all burned and bloody last time they saw each other. True, he was up moving now, but clearly he was still very upset about it. Who would blame him? Regardless, he was definitely extremely adamant about letting them through. Zane did a respectful bow and began to introduce himself to show he meant no harm, but all he got was the bow pointed at him. Lloyd began to beg Brad to put the bow down, but was cut off by a mighty voice calmly telling him to stand down. The group watched in awe as a man walked beside Brad. His messy silver hair reached halfway down his back, and his eyes were an astounding swirl of green and purple. Like Lloyd and Brad, he too was decorated in paint. Though, his markings had a lot of purple ones mixed in; as a posed to the others who had only shades of green. The green ninja lit up as he ran out and embraced the older man. "Father!!"
The man hugged him back; stern demeanor slowly melting away for a moment. It slowly returned however when he commanded Brad to let them be. He called them guests, and that seemed to annoy him, because he ran off without another word.
Garmadon looked around at the leaders with a hint of confusion. "I take it that you five are the leaders of your tribes?"
The group nodded and they began to introduce themselves. Garmadon still looked slightly confused though.
"Father." Lloyd spoke up. "The previous elemental masters you had told me to find were killed last time the Fire Tribe attacked. These are their children. They've taken on the duty of leadership, and I've seen them fight... they're amazing, I promise you."
Garmadon scanned over the small crowd of now unsure faces looking back at him. "That night sixteen years ago, when we lost so much, I sensed that the other tribes had also suffered greatly.... But somehow I had never imagined that it was that tragic of a blow. My deepest condolences to you all." He bowed respectfully at the end of the sentence. "Now, I believe that you could all use a rest after the long journey. My son shall show you the way to the village. You may rest there for today, but tomorrow we begin battle plans for the Fire Tribe’s incoming attack."
Jay, Cole, Nya, and Zane all expressed their thanks and followed Lloyd away. But Morro stopped and called for Garmadon to talk. The Jade Tribe leader turned to the boy and questioned what was wrong.
Morro was visibly frightened and very intimidated by his presence, but tried to swallow the feeling and just talk. He knelt down with his eyes closed. "Lord Garmadon, sir. I stand before you humble. These people I have brought along with me are the last of my tribe. Our home was destroyed by the fire soldiers 16 years ago. We cannot continue to live there..... So please, I understand if you do not trust me and wish to leave me behind, but please-..... take them in... They're dying... I fear we won't last much longer if...." His voice couldn't hold on after that sentence. He got too choked up to talk and the tears began to flow. Garmadon looked at the poor Wind Tribe; all looking like they felt terrible for Morro’s state. They were all dirty and gaunt. The boy was very clearly telling the truth about their situation, and it hurt to witness. The man smiled softly as he knelt down to the crying boy's eye level. He placed a gentle hand on his shoulder.
"I made a vow as a leader to protect those in need. What you just did was a very selfless act; putting those you care about before yourself. That's what a true leader would do... Morro, right? It would be an honor for you and your family to stay with us. And you may do so as long as you need."
The master of wind looked up in disbelief; tears still rolling down his face. There was no way that he’d truly just said that. No way that he’d excepted the plead to save them..... Yet, he did... Morro smiled as Nelson ran over and hugged him tightly; the biggest smile he’d ever had shining across his face. Garmadon graciously helped them to their feet, then led them to the village. When they arrived, their hearts skipped a beat. It was extremely similar to how the Wind Tribe village used to look. The residents there all seemed very weary of the leaders, which was honestly expected. Harumi was over by Lloyd asking him questions and greeting him back, while the others looked around in wonder. It was so different from the home's that they were used to. The bamboo and wood tree houses weren't anything that Jay had ever seen, and the sight certainly wasn't anything like a snowy mountain or desert. And it was definitely different from whatever Nya was used to under water. Over the next few hours, the Jade Tribe began to open up a little bit more to the leaders. They started asking questions and getting closer to talk to them. Most of the residents were incredibly friendly to them after a while, others stayed farther away. When it came to the Wind Tribe though, they were slightly more open with them. Probably because they didn't have the ability to shoot powers out of their hands and kill everyone. Especially one woman in particular who automatically took to little Nelson. He was just so small and sweet, but he looked so disheveled and tired. The woman brought him and the others plenty of food and water, and guided them to the large fire pit to get warmed up. And the man who Ronin and Skylor had injured, was properly treated. At that point, Morro had already disappeared from the area to get his emotions straightened out, so he received no such treatment. He was fine with that though; being tended to made him feel uncomfortable. As the day went by, everyone showed more willingness to be on better terms; except of course, Brad. He was still very upset about the injury Kai had inflicted on him; so his logic was that if one leader could do that, what's stopping the others from turning? As a guard, it was his duty to ensure everyone's safety, so potential threats being treated like guests had him on edge. Later, while everyone sat around the fire and ate dinner, they began to discuss something interesting. It became apparent that the reason the tribes stayed away from each other was because they all thought the others were evil. It was common sense that the Fire Tribe was known for its brutal nature, but according to everyone, they were raised to believe the same about the others. Jay admitted to being told that the Desert Tribe were monsters that brutality destroyed anyone who set foot on their land, and after they killed you, they'd just bury you in the sand. You'd be lost to time. On the other end, Cole was told that the Ice Tribe was ruled by a violent leader who froze his enemies solid, then shaddered you into a billion pieces. Zane was told that the Lightning Tribe leader was a maniac who only cared about himself and would gladly fry any trespassers. And so on so forth... Even Lloyd grew up believing rumors that every other tribe were awful and you would die a terrible death if you crossed them. But clearly, those rumors weren't true. So, why did they all believe that? Not even Garmadon seemed to know the full story...
Zane thought for a moment. "Well, it was said that the 1st elemental master of ice, Vex, wasn't a very noble man. Once he became the leader of his own tribe, the power got to his head and he started forcing everybody to bow to him. He forced them to call him the 'Ice Emperor'."
"Hey, isn't that what somebody called you?" Questioned Jay.
Zane nodded. "It is leader tradition to be called that. However, I prefer not to be... It just doesn't feel right. Especially considering the origins of the tradition."
Yeah, that's understandable he guessed. But what about the accusations the Desert Tribe faced?
Cole pondered. "From what I heard, the 1st master of Earth was a pretty big jerk actually. His name was Vangelis, and just like Zane had mentioned about his leader, he let the power of leadership get to his head as well. He made everyone call him the king, and that's why we have a straight up palace in our town."
"To be honest," Jay stared. "Unlike all of you, my tribe seems to remember a lot about their 1st leader. You see, we like to keep legends recorded in things like pot decorations, so I've heard about him a lot. His name was Unagami. According to legend, he could fly on a storm cloud!!!.. BUT- Allegedly, he was a little too powerful for his own good and sometimes his powers would get out of hand and hurt people... It's beyond anyone whether he meant to or not."
Nya quickly swallowed her giant bite of fish and excitedly waved her webbed hand in the air and begged to be called on next. Garmadon nodded, signaling that she could speak. She cleared her throat, getting closer to the fire like she was about to tell the story of a lifetime.
"It all started long before time had a name... Wojira, a mighty water spirit, ruled the ocean. According to legend, the the force that began giving people the power to control elements struggled to give life to something that can control water or wind; For only Wojira could control those. However once she realized how much good the other elemental masters were supposedly doing, she agreed to give life to her own. She created a daughter, who was named Nyad. She was just as powerful and just as her mother, but she could also be as cruel as the waves in which she came... But- that's about it."
Lloyd tilted his head. "Hold on? You said she could control water AND wind? So if Wojira created her own elemental masters out of BOTH her powers, then she made Morro’s ancestor too? Wouldn't that make you related?"
"Oh... I guess I never thought about it before, but I suppose so... at least to some extent...? Where is that wind bag anyway?"
Jay shrugged. "Probably out brooding or something."
Cole rolled his eyes. "Yeah, I wouldn’t worry too much about him. He seems like he's just been through a lot. If he wants to retract into his own little comfort corner for a while, we should probably let him."
Nelson, who was leading against a woman from his tribe, looked up at Cole. "The night before you guys showed up- he told us he was scared..." A soft moment of silence hung over the village for a moment after the sentence was finished. The woman stroked Nelson’s hair.
"Well, he knew we were close to...... *sigh* He was concerned about us, that was all. Besides, he's been like that ever since the accident."
"Again, my deepest condolences to all that has happened to you." Garmadon sighed. "However, we have a long day ahead of us tomorrow so I suggest that you all go get some rest. A few people here have kindly opened up their homes for you to sleep in tonight."
"But what about Morro?" Nelson yawned.
"He'll return when he feels better." A Wind Tribe member spoke. "If anything, he's probably sleeping in a tall tree right now. You know he falls asleep up there when he gets upset or worried. Now come on, let's get you to bed." The Wind Tribe led Nelson away to the huts while the other leaders said goodnight; following them up to the houses shortly after. Lloyd and Garmadon were the last to leave, putting out the fire. As the darkness of late night covered the landscape, everyone drifted off to sleep.
Finally somewhere safe...
