" Awwwww it's soooo cuuuute!" Mia said in a baby voice.

Annie blinked. " Mia, you do reali-"

" Shhhh! You'll scare it."

Maple and Emma exchanged a look. " What are we looking at?" Maple whispered.

Emma sighed. " Mia's second favorite animal."

" A seagull."

Maple blinked. " What's so special about -"

Annie shook her head rapidly. " It's better not to ask!"

Mia crouched low to the ground, holding out a piece of bread as the seagull cocked its head, clearly debating whether it could trust her.

"Come here, little guy," Mia cooed, her voice soft. "I won't hurt you. You’re so adorable!"

Annie crossed her arms, looking unimpressed. "Mia, it’s literally just a seagull. You’ve seen hundreds of them."

"Annie," Mia said sharply, not breaking her gaze from the bird. "You don’t just call them ‘just a seagull.’ They have feelings, you know."

Emma sighed dramatically, flopping onto the grass. "This is going to take forever. She’s in her ‘seagull whisperer’ phase again."

Maple tilted her head. "Wait, again? How many phases does she even have?"

"Too many," Annie muttered.

Sunnie snickered as she leaned against a tree. "Honestly, I think it’s kind of cute. But I’ll give it five minutes before the seagull snatches the bread and bolts."

"Bet it’s less than two," Emma chimed in.

Blackie, curled up on a nearby rock, yawned. "I’m with Emma. That bird’s planning its escape already."

Mia, oblivious to her friends' comments, inched closer to the seagull. "You’re such a good boy. Yes, you are! Come on, take the bread."

Finally, the seagull hopped forward, snatching the bread from Mia’s hand with expert precision.

"HA!" Emma said, clapping her hands. "Told you! Less than two minutes!"

The seagull, now perched a few feet away, squawked loudly before flying off with its prize.

Mia stood up, brushing dirt off her knees. "See? That’s progress. I bonded with nature."

Annie raised a brow. "You bonded with a seagull stealing your bread."

"Same thing," Mia said, unbothered.

Maple laughed. "You’re impossible, Mia."

Mia grinned, holding up another piece of bread. "Who’s next?!"

Emma groaned, pulling her hoodie over her face. "This is going to be a long day."

Annie and Emma exchanged a look. " Does it usually take this long?" Annie asked with a flat tone.

" I dunno." Emma shrugged helplessly.

Sunnie and Maple shrugged at one another.

" Why's she babying a seagull?" Sunnie asked.

Maple shook her head. " Dunno. You're her cousin."

" You're more observant!"

Annie sighed, watching Mia crouch again, cooing at yet another seagull. "Why does she baby seagulls? This feels... excessive."

Emma leaned back, propping herself up on her elbows. "No clue. Maybe she thinks she’s starting a bird army or something."

Maple raised a brow. "A seagull army? Really? That’s what you’re going with?"

Sunnie crossed her arms, nodding toward Mia. "Hey, stranger things have happened. She convinced a tiger to sit still for a selfie when she was, like, seven."

Maple blinked. "Wait—what?"

Emma groaned, covering her face. "Don’t remind me. I had to Photoshop out all the scratches from that fiasco."

Annie waved her hand dismissively. "Focus, people! Are we just going to sit here while she bonds with seagulls, or are we going to do something productive?"

"Like what?" Maple asked, clearly entertained. "You want to join her bird cult?"

Before Annie could respond, Mia stood up suddenly, holding a seagull in her arms.

"Guys, meet Gerald!" Mia announced proudly, beaming as the seagull squawked indignantly.

"Gerald?" Emma asked, deadpan.

"Yes, Gerald," Mia said, hugging the bird closer. "He’s my new best friend!"

The group collectively groaned.

"See?" Sunnie said to Maple. "This is why we don’t question her."

Maple nodded. "Lesson learned."

Meanwhile, Blackie hopped down from his rock, eyeing the seagull. "You better hope Gerald doesn’t get any ideas about nesting in the house."

Gerald squawked in what sounded like defiance.

Mia gasped. "Blackie! Don’t be rude to Gerald!"

Blackie narrowed his eyes. "I already have to compete with you. Now a bird? Absolutely not."

Emma buried her face in her hands. "Yep. Long day."
