Different though
One day, after a particularly rough mission, Jay found himself in Kai’s clinic, cradling his right arm with a pained expression on his face. His elbow had been wrenched in an awkward position during the battle, and he was convinced something much worse had happened.
Kai knelt beside him, gloves on, examining the injury with a calm, reassuring demeanor. "Okay, Jay, I need you to take a deep breath," Kai said, his voice soft and steady, trying to keep Jay from panicking.
Jay’s face twisted in confusion and pain. His eyes were wide as he stammered, "Wh...wha...t?!" His voice was shaky, clearly on the edge of freaking out. His hand hovered over his elbow, as if touching it would make things worse. "Kai, my arm! My elbow... It’s... it’s broken, right?!"
Kai raised an eyebrow and gently placed a hand on Jay’s shoulder. "Jay, relax. You’ve just dislocated your elbow."
But Jay wasn’t hearing it. His eyes darted to Kai, panic setting in even deeper. "No! No, Kai, this is my best arm! My right arm!" He swallowed, his breath hitching as his voice climbed a few octaves. "What if it’s... gone? I’ll have to—oh no, you’re gonna have to remove the whole thing, aren’t you?!"
Kai blinked, trying to suppress a laugh but staying professional. "Jay," he said firmly, giving him a small shake. "Your arm isn’t broken, and I’m not going to remove it."
But Jay wasn’t convinced. His mind raced with possibilities. "But... how will I be able to eat? How will I write, Kai?! And draw! And put clothes on! And..." He gasped dramatically. "Oh no, I won’t be able to be a ninja anymore! This is it! My career’s over!"
Kai pinched the bridge of his nose, stifling the urge to laugh at Jay’s overreaction. "Jay, buddy, would you please trust me?" Kai’s tone was calm but slightly exasperated. He knew Jay could be a little dramatic sometimes, but this was a whole new level.
Jay blinked, taking a deep breath like Kai had asked, but his anxiety hadn’t lessened. "Are you sure you won’t have to amputate? Like, one hundred percent sure?"
Kai rolled his eyes, his patience holding strong. "Yes, Jay. I’m sure. Now, sit still, and let me pop your elbow back into place."
Jay winced at the thought but nodded, his face still scrunched in worry. "Okay... But if this goes wrong, I'm holding you accountable!"
Kai just shook his head, muttering under his breath, "It’s a dislocation, not a life-threatening injury." He moved quickly and expertly, gripping Jay’s arm just so and, with a swift but gentle motion, popped the elbow back into place.
Jay yelped in surprise but then blinked, staring at his arm in disbelief. "Wait... that’s it?!" He flexed his fingers, moving his arm cautiously. "It’s... it’s okay?"
Kai nodded, a small smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "Told you. You’re fine. You just need to take it easy for a while."
Jay blinked, looking almost sheepish now. "Oh... um... thanks." He scratched the back of his head with his other hand, his face flushed with embarrassment.
Kai patted him on the back. "No problem. But next time, maybe don’t jump to the conclusion that you’ll need a full amputation, okay?"
Jay chuckled awkwardly, finally letting go of his fear. "Yeah, I guess I overreacted a little."
"A little?" Kai raised an eyebrow. "Jay, you were ready to give up your entire career over a dislocated elbow."
Jay sighed dramatically, leaning back. "Well, it is my best arm, after all."
Kai laughed, shaking his head as he packed up his supplies. "Only you, Jay. Only you."
After a long, exhausting mission, Jay found himself in Kai’s clinic once again. He hobbled inside, his face twisted with worry and panic, clutching his ankle. Kai, ever the calm one, ushered him onto the examination table with a sigh, already bracing himself for whatever over-the-top reaction Jay was about to throw his way.
"Alright, Jay, stay calm," Kai said, pulling on his gloves and reaching for his medical kit.
But before Kai could even begin to examine the injury, Jay’s eyes went wide, his voice shooting up an octave. "Kai! It’s my ankle! It’s not moving!" He dramatically pointed at his foot as if it had suddenly turned to stone. "I... I can’t feel anything! Oh no, oh no, I’m paralyzed! AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"
Kai blinked, taken aback by Jay’s shrill scream. He let out a slow breath, doing his best to stay composed as he placed a hand on Jay’s shoulder. "Jay, calm down. It’s probably just a sprain—"
Jay cut him off, shaking his head frantically. "No! No, Kai! This is serious! What if my ankle never moves again? What if I can’t walk?! What if—" His voice became more dramatic with every word. "What if I’m stuck like this forever?! I’ll never run again, never fight again, I’ll—"
"Jay!" Kai interrupted, trying not to laugh. "Let me check it first before you plan your early retirement, okay?"
Jay groaned, flopping back on the table with a defeated sigh, his arm thrown dramatically over his eyes. "It’s over, Kai. I can feel it. I’m going to need crutches, a wheelchair, something! Maybe I’ll need a robotic foot! Can you make me one of those? Zane has parts lying around, right? Oh wait, what if the robotic foot malfunctions in the middle of a fight and—"
Kai pressed his fingers to his temples, trying to block out Jay’s rambling. "Jay, please. Let me take a look at your ankle before you start planning your life as a half-robot ninja."
Jay, with great reluctance, moved his arm and peeked up at Kai. "Okay... but promise me you won’t have to replace the whole leg."
Kai gave a small smile, shaking his head as he knelt down beside Jay’s ankle. "I promise." He gently removed Jay’s shoe and sock, carefully inspecting the swelling. "It’s not broken, and you’re definitely not paralyzed. It’s a bad sprain, but nothing more."
Jay stared at him in disbelief. "A sprain? That’s it?"
"That’s it," Kai confirmed, applying an ice pack to the ankle. "Just rest it for a few days and you’ll be back on your feet in no time."
Jay groaned again, still not entirely convinced. "But it feels so much worse than that! I could’ve sworn I felt the bone snap! It’s gotta be more than just a sprain, Kai! I’m telling you, it felt paralyzing!"
Kai stood up and crossed his arms, giving Jay a knowing look. "Trust me, Jay. You’ll survive this one."
Jay sighed dramatically again, glancing down at his ankle like it had betrayed him. "Fine... but if I can’t move it by tomorrow, we’re getting me that robot foot."
Kai chuckled, patting Jay’s shoulder. "Deal."
This next oart- jays dream- that's mine when I was two or four or something
One late night, Kai was deep in sleep, the kind of sleep that only comes after a long day of missions and dealing with Jay’s endless antics. The room was silent, except for the soft rustling of blankets, when suddenly, a faint whimper broke the stillness.
Kai stirred, furrowing his brow as he opened one eye, blinking sleepily. In the dim moonlight filtering through the window, he could make out a familiar figure standing at the foot of his bed, clutching a pillow tightly to his chest.
With a sigh, Kai shifted over, making room for him. "Come on, Jay," he mumbled, already half-aware of what was coming next.
Without hesitation, Jay crawled into the bed, wrapping his arms around Kai with a desperate kind of grip, burying his face into Kai’s shoulder. His body trembled slightly, and Kai could feel the tension in his friend's hold.
"Kai," Jay whispered, his voice thick with fear. "Promise me... promise me you’ll never cut my limbs off with an electric saw."
Kai blinked, barely awake, and had to stifle a tired laugh. Of all the things Jay could be worried about in the middle of the night, this wasn’t even on the list Kai had in his mind. He sighed softly, knowing Jay’s tendency to let his wild imagination get the best of him.
With one hand, Kai started gently stroking Jay’s hair, his fingers combing through the messy strands in a soothing rhythm. "I promise, Jay," he said quietly, trying to keep his voice soft and reassuring. "No electric saws. Ever."
Jay let out a small sigh of relief, still holding onto Kai as though his life depended on it. "Good," he murmured, his voice slightly muffled by Kai’s shoulder. "Because I had a dream... and you were all ‘Hold still, Jay, it’ll just take a second,’ and I freaked out..."
Kai couldn’t help but smile at the absurdity of it. "Well, you don’t have to worry about that happening. I’m not going anywhere near you with a saw."
Jay nodded slowly, his grip loosening slightly as Kai continued to stroke his hair. "Thanks, Kai. I knew I could count on you."
"Of course, Jay," Kai said softly, his own eyelids feeling heavy again. "Now get some sleep. No more crazy dreams, alright?"
Jay nodded, finally settling down. "Alright," he whispered, his breathing starting to slow as he drifted off into sleep, still holding onto the pillow—and Kai—like a lifeline.
One night, as the moonlight filtered through the curtains, Kai was deep in sleep, dreaming of peaceful battles and serene landscapes. Suddenly, a soft whimper cut through the silence, stirring him awake. Blinking groggily, he turned to see Jay sitting on the edge of the bed, clutching a pillow as if it were a lifeline.
Kai sighed, feeling a wave of sympathy wash over him. "Jay?" he mumbled, rubbing his eyes. "What’s wrong?"
Without a word, Jay shuffled closer, wrapping his arms around Kai tightly, burying his face against his brother's shoulder. "Kai," he said, his voice muffled, "promise me... you will never cut my limbs off with an electric saw."
Kai's heart sank as he stroked Jay's hair gently, trying to soothe him. "Where did you get that idea, Jay?!" he asked, concern lacing his tone.
Jay trembled slightly, struggling to catch his breath. "I... in m... my dre...am, you we...re go—" His voice cracked, and he hiccuped, unable to finish his thought as tears began to fall.
"Hey, hey," Kai said softly, shifting to face Jay fully and wiping away the tears with his thumb. "It’s okay. It was just a dream. I promise I would never do something like that."
Jay took a shuddering breath, trying to compose himself but only managing to hiccup again. "But... it felt so real! You were... you were really upset. And the saw… it was loud, Kai!"
Kai's heart ached for his brother. "Jay, listen to me. That’s not going to happen. I love you too much to ever hurt you. I’d never let anything happen to you."
Jay looked up, his eyes still watery but searching for reassurance. "You mean it?"
"Absolutely," Kai said, pulling him closer and wrapping his arms around him protectively. "Now, why don’t you try to get some sleep? I’m right here."
Slowly, Jay relaxed in Kai's embrace, his breath evening out as he snuggled closer, comforted by Kai’s presence. "Okay... but if you ever think about a saw," he mumbled sleepily, "you better think again."
Kai chuckled softly, stroking Jay’s hair again. "No saws, I promise. Just dreams of victory and ninja adventures, okay?"
"Okay," Jay murmured, finally drifting off to sleep, feeling safe and secure as Kai watched over him.
One quiet night, Kai was nestled comfortably in bed, drifting into a deep sleep. The peaceful atmosphere was soon interrupted by a soft whimper that pulled him from his dreams. Blinking sleepily, he turned to see Jay, clutching a pillow and looking utterly distressed.
Kai sighed, shifting to make room. "Come here," he said, patting the space beside him. Jay didn’t hesitate; he crawled into bed, wrapping his arms around Kai tightly as if he were a lifeline.
"Promise me you will never cut my limbs off with an electric saw," Jay murmured, his voice shaky.
Kai raised an eyebrow in confusion, running a hand through Jay's hair. "Where did you get that idea, Jay?!"
Jay’s sobs erupted, muffled into the pillow. "I... In m... my dre..am, you we...re go..." His words were punctuated by hiccups, making it hard for him to finish his thought.
“Shhhh, Jay. Calm down,” Kai soothed, his voice low and comforting. He gently stroked Jay’s hair, trying to ease the tension that had overtaken him.
Jay took a deep breath, his body trembling as he tried to regain his composure. “Sorry I woke you up,” he managed to say, his voice still laced with fear.
“Jay, I don’t care about how much sleep I get,” Kai replied softly. “As long as you’re okay. You hear me?”
Jay nodded slowly, the warmth of Kai’s presence reassuring him. “Yeah, I just... I don’t want to lose you, Kai. Not like that.”
Kai’s heart ached at the vulnerability in Jay’s words. He tightened his grip around his brother, pulling him closer. “You’re not going to lose me. I promise. No electric saws, no crazy dreams. Just you and me, okay?”
Jay finally relaxed a little, the tension melting away as he buried his face into Kai’s shoulder. “Okay,” he whispered, feeling safe again.
Kai smiled gently, stroking Jay's back. “Now, try to get some sleep. I’ll be right here.”
It was late at night, and the quiet hum of the evening filled the air. Kai, usually a light sleeper after years of being on high alert, was deep in sleep for once, his body finally relaxing after a long day. The moonlight gently streamed through the window, casting soft shadows across the room. Everything was peaceful... until Kai heard a soft whimper.
His brows furrowed in his sleep as the sound pierced the quiet. Slowly, Kai stirred, one eye lazily opening to see what was going on. That’s when he noticed a shadow at the edge of his bed. Blinking the sleep from his eyes, Kai saw Jay standing there, clutching a pillow tightly against his chest, his face streaked with silent tears.
Kai sighed softly, knowing Jay must have had one of his nightmares again. Jay had always been prone to those, especially after difficult missions, and lately, they had been getting worse. Without a word, Kai shifted, moving over to make room for Jay in his bed.
“You can come in,” Kai said, his voice a little groggy but gentle.
Jay, without hesitation, slid into bed beside him, wrapping his arms tightly around Kai as though he was the only thing tethering him to reality. His body trembled slightly, and Kai could feel the tension radiating off him as Jay buried his face into Kai’s shoulder. The soft whimpers continued, barely muffled by the pillow clutched in Jay's arms.
“Kai,” Jay whispered, his voice shaky and thick with emotion. “Promise me you’ll never cut my limbs off with an electric saw.”
Kai blinked, confused, and his hand automatically went to Jay’s head, stroking his hair in an attempt to calm him down. “What?” he asked, his brows furrowing. “Where did you get that idea, Jay?”
Jay hiccuped between sobs, his grip on Kai tightening. He buried his face deeper into Kai's shoulder, his body shaking with each ragged breath. “I… I had this dream…” Jay managed to say between hiccups and stifled sobs. “You… you were go… going to c-cut off my a-arm with an e-electric saw… and I… I couldn’t s-stop you…”
His words trailed off, and he let out another broken sob, unable to continue. Kai's heart clenched at the sight of his best friend like this. He sighed softly, his hand still stroking Jay’s hair in a slow, soothing rhythm.
“Shhh,” Kai whispered gently. “Jay, it was just a dream. I’d never do that to you, okay? Calm down… I’m right here.”
But Jay, despite his best efforts, couldn’t calm down. His sobs were quiet but heartbreaking, his body shaking uncontrollably as he clung to Kai as if he’d disappear if he let go. Each breath Jay took seemed to hitch in his throat, his attempts to calm himself futile.
Kai wrapped his arms around Jay a little tighter, pulling him close, offering him the warmth and safety he so desperately needed. “Shhh, Jay,” Kai repeated softly, his tone full of reassurance. “It’s okay… I’m here, buddy. I’m not going anywhere.”
Jay tried to take a deep breath, but it came out shaky and broken. He clutched Kai’s shirt like a lifeline, his tears soaking into the fabric. “I… I’m sorry… I just… I can’t stop… thinking about it… You… you were just gone, and I couldn’t—”
Kai gently shushed him again, rocking Jay slightly in his arms as if comforting a scared child. “You don’t need to apologize, Jay. I get it. Nightmares can be awful, but I promise, none of that is real. I’m not going to leave you. I’m not going to hurt you. You’re safe with me.”
Jay hiccuped again, his sobs finally starting to die down, though the fear in his eyes was still evident. “But what if… what if one day you do? What if you can’t save me, Kai? What if I—”
Kai shook his head, cutting him off before Jay could spiral any further. “I won’t let that happen. I’d never let anything like that happen to you, Jay. You’re safe. I’ll always be there to protect you.”
Jay sniffled, his breathing beginning to slow, though he still looked uncertain. “Promise?”
Kai smiled softly, pressing his forehead against Jay’s in a comforting gesture. “I promise. No electric saws, no losing limbs, no nightmares coming true. Just sleep now, okay?”
Jay hesitated for a moment, but the comfort of Kai’s warmth and steady presence finally seemed to seep in. He nodded, his grip on Kai loosening slightly as he tried to relax, though his arms stayed wrapped around his best friend.
Kai continued to stroke his hair, his touch gentle and soothing. “Just sleep, Jay,” he murmured again. “I’m right here.”
It took a while, but eventually, Jay’s breathing evened out. His body relaxed, and his sobs turned into soft breaths as he finally drifted off into sleep, still holding onto Kai like a lifeline.
Kai sighed, feeling a sense of relief wash over him now that Jay had calmed down. He kept his arms wrapped around him, unwilling to move in case Jay woke up again. For a long while, he just lay there, listening to the rhythmic sound of Jay’s breathing, his fingers still gently threading through Jay’s hair.
“Sleep well, Jay,” Kai whispered into the dark, his own eyes starting to close as he finally allowed himself to drift back into sleep, the two of them resting in the quiet peace of the night, together.
It was late at night, and the house was quiet, save for the occasional rustle of leaves outside. Kai lay in bed, his eyes closed, lost in a peaceful slumber after a long, grueling day. The room was dark, with only the faint glow of moonlight seeping through the curtains. Everything was still—until a soft whimper broke the silence.
Kai stirred, slowly opening one eye, squinting in the dim light. He felt a slight movement beside him and turned his head to see a familiar figure clutching a pillow tightly, trembling slightly. It was Jay, standing at the edge of the bed, looking scared and vulnerable.
With a tired sigh, Kai shifted over, making room for his brother-in-law. "Come on, Jay," he mumbled softly, already knowing what Jay needed. "There's room."
Without hesitation, Jay slipped under the covers and wrapped his arms tightly around Kai, his body shaking with quiet sobs. His face was buried in the pillow, his grip firm as if holding onto Kai was the only thing keeping him grounded.
"Kai..." Jay’s voice was muffled by the pillow, but the fear in it was unmistakable. "Promise me... promise me you’ll never cut my limbs off... with an electric saw."
Kai blinked, caught off guard by the bizarre request. He glanced down at Jay, one eyebrow raised in confusion as he stroked Jay's hair gently. "What? Jay, where did you get that idea?" he asked softly, his voice filled with concern.
Jay’s sobs grew more desperate as he tried to explain, hiccupping between his words. "I... I saw it... in my dream... You were... you were going to... and... and I couldn’t stop you..." His voice cracked, and he buried his face deeper into the pillow, unable to continue. His whole body trembled as the memory of the nightmare overwhelmed him.
Kai’s heart clenched at the sight of his usually strong, boisterous brother-in-law reduced to this frightened state. Gently, he wrapped his arms tighter around Jay, pulling him close and resting his chin on top of Jay’s head. "Shhh, Jay. Calm down," Kai murmured soothingly, his hand continuing to stroke Jay’s hair in slow, rhythmic motions.
But Jay couldn’t calm down. His breathing was erratic, his body shaking as the tears continued to flow. "I... I thought it was real, Kai... I thought you were really gonna..." Jay’s voice trailed off into more hiccups, his chest rising and falling rapidly as he struggled to get his breath under control.
Kai held him tighter, offering as much comfort as he could. "It was just a dream, Jay. I would never do anything like that, you know that." His voice was calm and steady, the way he always spoke when Jay needed reassurance. "I’m here, okay? I’m not going anywhere."
Jay nodded weakly, but his sobs hadn’t quite stopped. He clung to Kai like a lifeline, still trembling. "But it... it felt so real, Kai... I... I couldn’t stop it. I was so scared..."
Kai tightened his embrace, wishing he could take away all of Jay’s fear. "You’re safe. I’m right here. Nothing like that is ever going to happen."
For a while, they just lay there, Jay’s soft sobs gradually fading into quiet sniffles. Kai continued to hold him, not letting go, waiting patiently for Jay’s breathing to even out. Eventually, the tension in Jay’s body began to ease, though his grip on Kai remained tight.
Kai whispered again, his voice even softer now. "Sleep, Jay. You need to rest. I’m here. You’re not alone."
Jay took a shaky breath, still trying to settle. "You promise...?" he asked in a small voice, barely above a whisper.
"I promise," Kai reassured him, his hand still gently stroking Jay’s hair. "I’ll always be here for you, Jay. Now sleep."
Jay nodded, his eyelids growing heavy as the exhaustion from the day and the emotional toll of the nightmare began to catch up with him. His breathing slowed, the hiccups fading as his grip on Kai loosened slightly. Despite the remnants of fear, there was a sense of safety in Kai’s arms, a feeling that slowly coaxed him toward sleep.
Kai stayed awake for a little longer, making sure Jay was truly asleep before allowing himself to relax. He listened to the quiet, steady breathing of his brother-in-law, feeling the weight of Jay's trust and vulnerability resting against him.
As Jay finally drifted off, his body no longer trembling, Kai whispered once more, barely audible, "I’ve got you, Jay. Always."
And with that, Kai allowed himself to close his eyes again, holding Jay close through the night, ensuring that his best friend would have no more nightmares as long as he was there.
“ Uh…. Mia?” Jay asked as he looked through binoculars. “ Is it normal for a shark to roam so close to shore?”
Mia’s brows furrowed. “ What?”
She grabbed her binoculars hanging from her neck and peered through them.
“ Jay, that’s a whale!”
Jay looked at her, confused. “ What?”
Mia nodded. “ Yep. Whales and dolphins move their tails up and down, while sharks and fish side to side.”
Then Mia peered through again. “ But why is it so close…….?” She mused.
Then she gasped. She threw her binoculars to Jay, tightened her ponytail, and dove inot the water.
“ Mia!” Jay yelled. He turned to the others, who watched and had stood up ( like that episode when their cooler was eaten and they all stood up and Kai was like ‘ I saw it! Unless it was a Mirage!’)
“ Did she just……?” Cole trailed off.
Jay nodded. “ She just dove into the sea from the pier!”
Lloyd groaned. “ Why is she like this?”
Jay shrugged. “ I have no idea. She’s like mom.”
Kai sighed and walked to the waterfront. “ Use your binoculars.”
Jay turned. “ What?”
Kai sighed deeply. “ If you use your binoculars, you’ll be able to see what she’s doing.”
“ Oh. OH yeah. Good idea.” He took his binoculars and looked through them. “ Woah.”
“ What?” Lloyd asked. “ What?!”
Jay turned to them. “ She’s like a dolphin!”
They all raised a brow. Jay sighed. “ Use your binoculars.”
They looked down to find binoculars on their necks. “ Oh yeah. Forgot we had these.” Lloyd said as he picked them up.
When he peered through them, he gasped. “ How did we not know she could do that?”
“ Dunno. But your sister is amazing, that’s for sure.” Cole replied.
Mia was jumping out of the water gracefully, spinning and backflipping and splashing and laughing.
“ She’s like a mermaid!” Nya muttered in awe.
Jay chuckled. “ She did love the water when dad was alive, that’s for sure. Every week we would go to the beach, and as much as I loved it, she loved it more. Jumping and making castles with me. That’s her happy place.”
Lloyd nodded. “ It shows.”
Then Mia reached the whale, and swam around it.
“ Kai. Do you read me?” Mia’s voice came through their speaker. They put their masks on.
“ I hear you, Mia.”
“ Kai, I need you to go to the Bounty and open the large blue locker. You can’t miss it. It’s where Jay’s gaming thing is.”
“ Hey!” Jay exclaimed. “ It’s not a ‘ thing’! It’s an arcade game!”
Mia sighed. “ Sure, Jay. Sure. Anyway, Zane, go to the Bounty seat and under it should be a pack of bandages. Jay, Nya, you two need to make a small electric raft to bring the things out here.”
They nodded, and set off to work.
“ What about us?” Cole asked.
There was a hint of amusement in her voice. “ You and Lloyd have the most important jb ever. Not to attract any attention.”
“ Oh yeah. As if the ninja standing on the beach isn’t attention enough.” Cole said flatley.
“ In the bounty are grandma costumes. Wear them.”
“ O- HEY!” Lloyd yelled. “ I am NOT going to be a grandma, thank you very much.”
“ Deal with it.”
“ This is embarrassing.” Lloyd muttered as he and Cole sat under a tree.
“ Hey!” Jay exclaimed, wearing a scratchy beard. “ She made us dress up too!”
“ Yeah, but at least you’re not wearing a flannel sweater in summer! I’m burning!”
“ Would you two stop complaining and help?” Mia’s voice came through their mask.
Cole sighed. “ Fine.”
Nya, almost tripping on her long dress as she hiked up the steep hill, turned and pressed a button. “ It’s on.” She said, pointing the joystick to the direction Mia was.
“ Thanks. Now relax.”
Jay couldn’t. “ Can’t we come over and help you?!”
Mia sighed. “ Fine. But keep a distance.”
That ‘ distance’ so happened to be a mile away.
“ I can’t see you!” He yelled.
“ Take pictures!” Mia yelled back.
Jay groaned. " Nope. Not going to."
Mia sighed. " You aren't coming any closer, Elizabeth."
Mia sighed. " You aren't coming any closer, Elizabeth."
She heard Jay groan, but she ignored.
" How we doing, Humphrey?*
Humphrey, the Sei Whale, let out a bellow. Mia giggled. " Oh, Humphrey."
Then the boat with the materials touched Mia's thigh. Mia turned. " THANKS NYA!"
nya gave a thumbs up sign, and Mia turned away. She picked the bandages and swam to Humphreys tail. " Hold still, Humphy."
Humphrey bellowed again, and Mia quickly wrapped it securely.
" How's it going?" Jay asked from the mask.
Mia groaned. " His injuries are fatal." She said in a sarcastic voice. " We'll need to call the vet."
She could hear Jay panic. " Kai, call a vet! We need a vet!!!"
Mia groaned. " Jay, I'm joking. I can handle it."
Mia secured the final wrap on Humphrey’s tail, gently patting the whale's massive side. “There you go, buddy. All patched up.”
Humphrey let out a soft bellow, as if thanking her, before slowly swimming in circles near the pier, testing out his newly bandaged tail. Mia couldn’t help but smile. Despite the ridiculous costumes and all the commotion, moments like these made it all worth it. She gave Humphrey a final affectionate pat before swimming back toward the raft.
“Everything’s good down here, you guys,” Mia reported through the communicator. “Humphrey’s ready to go. Just give him some space to swim off.”
Jay's voice crackled through the mask. "Are you sure? What if he needs more—"
“I said, he’s fine, Jay,” Mia interrupted with a laugh. “Humphrey's tougher than he looks.”
Up on the shore, the others were waiting for her to surface. Nya had her arms crossed, smirking at Cole and Lloyd, who were still miserably dressed in their grandma disguises. Cole tugged at the itchy wig, and Lloyd, red-faced from the heat, grumbled something under his breath about how ridiculous the whole situation was.
Finally, Mia broke through the surface, climbing onto the raft with grace. “Thanks for the help, guys,” she said, as she wrung out her soaked ponytail.
Jay rushed over as she reached the shore, still looking worried. “Are you sure he’s okay? Should we do anything else? Maybe call a marine biologist or—"
Mia placed a hand on his shoulder, stopping his ramble. “Jay, relax. Humphrey’s going to be just fine. You did great. Everyone did.”
Kai stepped forward, still holding his binoculars. “You handled that pretty well, Mia,” he said, his tone filled with pride. “Although I have to ask, why exactly did you make Cole and Lloyd wear those... costumes?”
Mia smirked as she looked over at the duo, who were still sitting under the tree, looking absolutely miserable. “Honestly? I just thought it would be funny.”
Cole’s jaw dropped, and Lloyd groaned loudly. “You did this for a joke?!”
Mia chuckled, shrugging as she stretched her legs. “You two needed to lighten up anyway. Besides, it worked, didn’t it?”
Cole opened his mouth to argue, but then closed it, sighing in defeat. “Yeah, yeah, whatever.”
Jay, now more at ease, couldn’t help but laugh. “Well, at least Humphrey’s okay. And you didn’t have to call a vet this time.” He shot a playful glance at Mia.
She smirked back. “Don’t worry, next time I’ll let you handle the whale.”
“Next time?!” Jay’s voice shot up an octave, and Mia just laughed as she headed up the pier, leading the way back to the beach.
As the group walked away, Jay couldn’t help but smile to himself. “You know,” he said, catching up to Mia, “for someone who drives me crazy, you’re kind of amazing.”
Mia grinned, bumping his shoulder. “I know.”
