Poisoned on the farm
This is what I have been busy with the whole morning
And half afternoon
Anyway
" Welp, this is great." Mia said as she set her bag down. " An Airbnb on the farm!"
Annie smiled as she saw a paper. " Yes!" She cheered. " Steph left us a list!"
She grabbed it and took a pen from her hair, letting her wavy chocolate brown hair fall.
Mia smiled as she shook her reddish-brown hair, then glanced at Emma, who was drawing everything in sight.
" Look at their couch! And bathroom! Oooooh, and she even has a bed!"
Annie chuckled. " She sounds like she hasn't slept in ages."
Mia nodded. " Yeah."
Then she glanced at the list. " Okay, what do we have to do?"
Annie scanned the list. " Uh.... Well, she said help yourself to the fruits and veggies."
Emma's face peeked out of her roof, and she ran to the door. " Really?" She asked, bouncing from foot to foot.
Annie nodded, and Emma eagerly ran out of the house, singing, " We're on a fasaaarm, we're on a fasaaarm."
Mia shook her head. " Anything else to know?"
" We need to water the plants, yada yada yada.... OH!"
" what?" Mia asked, rushing over.
" There's a poisonous berry, AKA Toxicus Venomaricus."
" And its real name?"
" Poison berry."
" Oh, what does it do, make you feel better?" Mia said sarcastically.
Annie laughed and looked back down.." it looks like a blueberry."
Then she looked up. " Emma's out there!"
Mia's eyes widened. " Does it grow exactly like a blue-"
" Yes!" Annie yelled, throwing the paper on the couch. " We need to save her!"
But just then, Emma staggered to the door. " Guys?" She whispered. " I don't feel so good."
Then she blacked out.
Annie and Mia glanced at one another, at a loss of what to do
" We need to bring her to someone!" She exclaimed, picking Emma up.
" But who?" Annie asked as she walked with Mia
" Kai. He's close by. We should be happy your friend doesn't live too far from Ninjago."
" How is she?" Mia asked as she held an unconscious Emma's hand.
Kai took the stethoscope off Emma's chest, set it aside, and sighed as he placed both arms on his hips.
" Well, she'll be okay. Thing is, how did she-"
" Poisoned." Mia stated as she watched Emma stir a little.
Annie sighed as she leaned on the wall. " Thanks Kai."
" Yeah, thanks." Mia said, leaving Emma for a second to jab him playfully on the arm.
" Hey! I helped you friend and this is the payment I get?!" Kai said playfully, raising a brow.
Mia grinned at Kai. "You know I appreciate it, but you're still getting the jab!"
Kai laughed, rubbing his arm with mock annoyance. "You're lucky I like you all," he said, turning his attention back to Emma.
Annie stepped forward, concern still evident in her eyes. "So, she'll be fine, right?"
Kai nodded reassuringly. "Yeah, she just needs rest. The poison from that berry is strong, but fortunately, Emma didn't eat much of it. Give her a day or so, and she'll be back to bouncing off the walls."
Mia let out a relieved sigh and glanced at Annie. "That was a close call. Next time, we need to make sure she knows the difference between a blueberry and a death berry."
Annie chuckled nervously. "Yeah, no kidding."
Kai stood up, crossing his arms. "I'll keep an eye on her tonight. You two should get some rest too. You've been through a lot today."
Mia hesitated for a moment before nodding. "Alright. But if anything changes, you'll call us, right?"
Kai smiled softly as he pat his sister on the head. "Of course. Go rest. Emma will be fine here."
Mia and Annie exchanged one last glance before reluctantly heading for the door. Just as they were about to leave, Mia paused and turned back. "Thanks again, Kai. You're the best."
Kai waved her off with a smirk. "Yeah, yeah. Now get out of here before I change my mind about being nice."
With a final laugh, Mia and Annie headed out of the room, leaving Kai to watch over Emma.
As they walked out into the cool night air, Annie nudged Mia. "Well, at least we know one thing for sure."
Mia raised an eyebrow. "What's that?"
Annie grinned. "If we ever need a doctor, your brother is our guy."
Mia laughed, feeling a little lighter. "Yeah, he definitely is."
" Holy cow! How does Stephanie Rogers ever do all the work?!" Mia squeaked as she glanced at the farm.
Ann took a calculator out. " Hmmm...... 3,000 Miles per hour....... and multiply that by 3...... 9,000 hours." She stated.
Mia's eyes almost dropped. " WHAT?!"
Annie smiled sweetly as she put the calculator away. " Welcome."
" Bu.... wha..... ho....." She sighed. " Fine. I water the crops."
" And I'll do the harvesting!"
They broke off, Mia with the water and ANnie with the crops.
Five minutes into working, Mia came to help Annie start the tractor. Annie was in the driver's seat, working hard to try and turn it on.
" let me help." Mia offered.
Annie raised a brow. " Did you give water to all the crops?"
Mia nodded. " Yep! USed my powers."
" Gre- WHAT?!" Annie yelled.
Mia looked confused. " I used my water.....?"
" Mia, did you give them too much?"
" No."
ANnie sighed.
" I gave them all the water that was in the hose."
Annie took off running to the crops which were soaking wet.
Annie skidded to a halt at the edge of the crops, her jaw dropping as she stared at the soggy mess before her. "Mia!" she exclaimed, throwing her hands up. "These crops are drenched! They're practically swimming!"
Mia, who had followed her, looked genuinely confused. "I thought they needed water... and I was trying to be efficient."
Annie groaned, rubbing her forehead. "Mia, plants don't need that much water all at once! You've practically flooded the entire field."
Mia pouted, kicking at the ground. "But I used the hose! It's not like I called down a rainstorm."
Annie shook her head. "Next time, let's stick to normal watering techniques, okay? No ninja powers."
Mia crossed her arms. "Fine, but I still think my method was faster."
Annie shot her a look. "Yeah, and now we'll have a swamp on the farm. Stephanie Rogers never had to deal with this."
Mia gave an exaggerated sigh. "Guess I'll just stick to tractor duty."
Annie pointed at her. "Carefully. No powers."
Mia held her hands up in mock surrender. "Fine, no powers. But don't blame me if I break the tractor without them." She turned and jogged back to the machine, leaving Annie shaking her head.
As she approached the tractor again, Mia hopped into the driver's seat and stared at the controls. "Okay... how hard can it be?"
She twisted the key, and the tractor rumbled to life, causing Mia to beam with pride. "Ha! Got it!"
Annie, still looking over the soaked crops, shouted from behind, "Don't drive over the mud! You'll get stuck!"
Mia paused, glancing back at the muddy field. "Right. Noted."
With a grin, she slowly drove the tractor forward, carefully navigating away from the mud and attempting to redeem herself after the watering disaster. "At least I didn't flood the tractor too," she muttered to herself with a smirk.
Suddenly, her phone rang. It was Kai.
She turned the tractor off, leaned back, and answered. " Hye, bro. How's Em?"
" Oh, she's good. Just been TRANSFERED TO THE ER! MIA HOW MUCH DID THE GIRL EAT?!"
Mia froze in the driver's seat of the tractor, her heart skipping a beat. "Wait, what?!" she exclaimed into the phone. "Transferred to the ER?!"
Kai's voice on the other end sounded frantic. "Yes! She was doing fine, but then her symptoms worsened. They think she might've eaten more of those poisonous berries than we thought! Mia, how much did she eat?!"
Mia gripped the steering wheel tightly, her face turning pale. "I—I don't know! She said she just ate a couple before she felt sick!"
Kai let out an exasperated groan. "Well, whatever a 'couple' means to Emma, it was clearly too much. They're doing their best, but she's in serious condition now."
Mia's mind raced. She glanced at the soaking crops, feeling a deep pang of guilt twist in her stomach. "I'm coming over," she said, her voice firm.
"No, stay there," Kai replied. "We've got this under control, but I need you to think. Did she say anything else? Did she grab anything else from the farm?"
Mia ran her hand through her hair, desperately trying to recall. "No, she didn't say anything else. She just grabbed some berries, came back, and then... passed out."
Kai sighed on the other end. "Alright. Just keep your phone on. I'll update you once I know more."
Mia hung up, her hands shaking slightly. She hopped off the tractor and hurried back toward Annie. "Emma's been transferred to the ER," she blurted out.
Annie's face went pale. "What?! I thought she was going to be okay!"
"They think she ate more of the berries than we thought," Mia said, panic creeping into her voice. "We need to figure out how many, or if there's something else we missed!"
Annie nodded, her eyes wide with worry. "Let's go check the area where she was picking. Maybe there's a clue there."
Without wasting another second, the two girls ran back toward the field where Emma had been gathering the berries, hoping to find something that could help.
Mia knelt by the bushes, staring at the plucked berries, her heart racing as she fumbled with her phone. "Kai, there are three bushes plucked—three full bushes!" Her voice was shaking as she tried to explain.
On the other end, Kai's voice came through, steady but concerned. "Mia, slow down. Breathe."
"Breathe?! How can I breathe when this is all my fault?!" Mia cried, her voice breaking. She could feel the weight of guilt pressing down on her chest. "I should've known! I should've stopped her! If I hadn't been so distracted—"
Kai interrupted, his tone firm but gentle. "Mia, stop. You didn't know this was going to happen. None of us did. This isn't your fault."
Mia shook her head, feeling tears well up in her eyes. "But I should've been more careful. I was supposed to look out for her."
"Mia," Kai said softly, "you did everything you could. Right now, what matters is helping Emma get through this, okay? The doctors are doing everything they can. You need to stay calm."
Mia wiped her eyes, struggling to regain her composure. "I... I'm trying, Kai."
"I know," Kai replied. "But panicking won't help. Take a deep breath, and tell me exactly what you see."
Mia glanced at the bushes, trying to focus. "Okay... there are three bushes completely plucked, and the berries look like regular blueberries. But... they're the poisonous ones, aren't they?"
Kai's voice was calm. "Yeah, sounds like it. Don't touch them. We'll have to get rid of those carefully later. For now, just stay put and keep your phone close. I'll let you know the moment I hear any news about Emma."
Mia nodded, her grip on the phone tightening. "Okay. Thanks, Kai."
After hanging up, Mia slumped down on the ground, feeling the weight of everything crash down on her. Annie crouched beside her, putting a hand on her shoulder. "Hey, Mia, we'll get through this. Emma's strong."
Mia nodded, but her thoughts were heavy with worry. All she could do was wait—and hope Emma would pull through.
@The_Sage_Ninja_Morro you're in big trouble
And also @DumbassWriter17 you have got to stop apologizing
Lol I'm just saying for the next part
Three hours had passed, but to Mia, it felt like an eternity. She was pacing frantically around the farm, her mind racing as her phone remained clutched in her hand. Every minute without an update about Emma made her panic grow, reaching unbearable heights. By now, she was practically vibrating with anxiety, her thoughts spiraling out of control.
Suddenly, her phone rang. Without even glancing at the screen, Mia answered, her voice immediately rising as she began yelling, "Kai! What's happening? Is she okay? Why haven't you called sooner?! I can't—"
"Mia! Breathe!" Kai's firm but calm voice cut through her panic. "You need to calm down right now. Just breathe, okay?"
But Mia was too far gone. "How can I breathe, Kai? How can I calm down when this is all my fault?! I should've stopped her! Why didn't I—"
"Mia! Stop!" Kai's voice sharpened, forcing her to pause. "Listen to me. Emma is stable. The doctors say she's going to be okay. But I need you to calm down. Panicking like this isn't going to help anyone."
Mia's breath caught in her throat as she stumbled over her words. "I... but... I don't—"
"I know you're scared," Kai continued, his tone softening. "But Emma's in good hands now. You've done everything you could. Right now, you need to take care of yourself too."
Mia blinked, her vision blurring with tears. Her heart was still racing, but Kai's words were beginning to sink in. "She's... she's really going to be okay?"
"Yes, Mia. She's going to be fine," Kai reassured her. "It's going to take some time for her to fully recover, but she's stable. You don't need to worry about her anymore. Just breathe, okay?"
Mia let out a shaky breath, her panic slowly ebbing away as she listened to Kai's steady voice. "I... okay. I'll try."
"That's all I'm asking," Kai said gently. "Just take it one step at a time. We'll get through this."
Mia wiped at her eyes, her voice a bit steadier now. "Thanks, Kai. I don't know what I'd do without you."
Kai chuckled softly. "What are big brothers for, huh? Now, go sit down and take a break. Emma will need her friends when she wakes up."
Mia nodded, her heart still heavy but finally starting to settle. "Okay. I'll be ready."
But Mia couldn't just "sit" as Kai had suggested. Her anxiety was too intense, her heart pounding with guilt and worry. Without a second thought, she bolted out of the farmhouse and ran straight to the hospital, not even caring how fast she was going. She needed to see Emma—needed to make sure she was okay with her own eyes.
Annie followed. After all, she, too, wanted to see Emma.
And make sure Mia didn't turn into some two year old form of herself.
When Mia burst through the hospital doors, she nearly crashed straight into Kai, who was standing right in front of her. Before she could even say anything, he scooped her up in a tight hug, his voice immediately launching into a stream of medical terms.
"Her vitals are stable now, but we had to monitor her blood pressure, and she'll need a saline drip for dehydration. The berry caused a mild toxin reaction, but the antidote—"
Kai was talking fast, rattling off every detail, but Mia wasn't hearing a word. Her mind was racing too quickly to comprehend anything. All she could think about was Emma lying in a hospital bed because of her mistake.
Meanwhile, Annie was standing nearby, nodding along as Kai continued to explain. She was the only one actually processing what Kai was saying, her brows furrowing in concern but also relief.
"Wait, so she's really okay now?" Annie asked, cutting through the medical jargon.
Kai nodded, glancing at Mia, who still looked lost in her own whirlwind of guilt. "Yes, she's okay, Annie. She just needs some rest, and she'll be monitored for a bit, but she's not in any danger."
But Mia wasn't comforted. "I should've stopped her," she mumbled, barely audible, as her eyes darted toward the hallway leading to Emma's room. "This is all my fault."
Kai squeezed her shoulder gently, trying to ground her. "Mia, it was an accident. You didn't know, and Emma will be fine."
"I didn't stop her," Mia insisted, her voice trembling. "I didn't—"
"Mia," Annie interrupted, stepping forward and holding her hand. "You're not helping by beating yourself up. Emma needs you to be strong for her now, okay?"
Mia looked at Annie, her guilt still etched deep on her face, but she gave a small, shaky nod. Kai exchanged a glance with Annie, silently thanking her for stepping in.
"Come on," Kai said softly, setting her down and leading Mia and Annie toward Emma's room. "You can see her now."
Mia hesitated for a moment but finally followed, her heart still heavy but ready to face her friend.
Inside Emma's hospital room, chaos immediately erupted. As soon as Mia and Annie entered, they both started talking at once.
"I'm so, so sorry, Emma!" Mia blurted, rushing to Emma's bedside. "I should've known better! I shouldn't have let you eat those berries! This is all my fault!"
Annie, standing beside her, was just as frantic. "Emma, I should've been more careful with the list! I didn't even think to double-check the bushes! I'm so sorry!"
Emma, looking a bit pale but awake, shook her head and started apologizing too. "No, no, it's my fault! I shouldn't have eaten so many berries without asking! I should've—"
Soon, all three of them were talking over each other, each one trying to take the blame, the room becoming a mess of frantic apologies and half-finished sentences.
"I should've—"
"I didn't—"
"It's all because I—"
Kai, standing by the door, let out a long, exaggerated sigh and rolled his eyes. He could hardly hear himself think with all the frantic chatter.
"Alright, alright!" Kai finally stepped in, raising his voice just enough to cut through the chaos. "Everyone, breathe."
They all stopped mid-apology and turned to look at him.
"Like brother, like sister," Kai muttered, shaking his head with an amused smile. "Jay and Mia—both the same when they panic."
Mia blinked, startled. "What? I—"
"Yeah," Kai said, crossing his arms. "Jay's just as bad. You're both out here blaming yourselves for things that aren't even your fault."
Emma managed a small laugh, her voice still weak but teasing. "Guess you're not so unique after all, Mia."
Mia blushed, glancing at Annie. "Okay, maybe I overreacted a little," she admitted, her tone sheepish.
Annie nodded in agreement. "Yeah, just a bit."
Kai smiled and shook his head. "Emma's fine. She'll be out of here soon. So, all of you—chill."
Back on the farm, Emma didn't dare step a foot out.
" I am NOT going back to the hospital." She said firmly
Annie sighed as she stepped on the porch. " You'll be fine. Besides, there's nothing else here which you can't eat. Check the list." She walked out, and the other two girls moved to the list on the table.
" Yeah, she's actually right." Mia said, impressed.
But when Emma picked it up, another slip of paper flew down.
" Oh great." Mia muttered. " More instructions."
Emma picked it up. " Oooooh, ivy that makes you sick!"
Mia raised her brows. " You say that like it's cool."
" For taking villains down, yes. Imagine, them going to be ready for an elemental fight but we take them down by surprise with the vine an-"
Before she could finish, a scream came from the farm. Emma sighed. " What now?"
They scampered out. " Annie?!" Mia yelled, cupping her hands. " Annnieeeeeeeeeeeeee?!"
Emma looked at the ground. " Prints.... with diamonds!"
Mia looked down. " Annie's shoe marks! See, there's an A in the middle." She pointed to a spot on the ground with her foot.
"But where is she now?" They scouted, until Emma came up with an idea.
" Let's follow the prints."
" You're a genius, Em, you know that?" She said, ruffling her hair.
Emma laughed. " I'm no genius." She said modestly. " You taught me all this."
Mia smiled and shook her head. " No, girl. This was all you."
" But we should follow the tracks."
The two girls broke into a run, following the tracks as sand flew in the air behind them.
When they reached the end of the prints, they found Annie covered in spots, motionless, next to....
" Ivy"! Emma yelled.
Mia sighed, looking around. She spotted two towels.
" HEre." She said, passing Emma one. " We need to take her to Kai."
" So-"
" She'll be okay." Kai cut in as he moved back.
Mia sighed. " You didn't even let me finish my sentence!"
" Sorry, sis. But I already know wat you're gonna say at this point."
Kai wiped his hands on a towel and gave Mia a knowing smile. "Look, Annie's just having a mild reaction to the ivy. She'll be fine after some rest and ointment. Nothing like what Emma went through."
Emma, sitting in a chair beside the hospital bed, groaned. "Can we just not talk about that anymore?"
Mia rolled her eyes. "Well, someone should've been more careful!"
"Hey!" Emma shot back, crossing her arms. "You're the one who brought up the list!"
Kai chuckled. "Alright, let's not play the blame game again." He pulled off his gloves, tossing them aside. "Annie's okay, and that's what matters."
Annie, still lying on the bed but now conscious and smiling faintly, nodded. "Yeah, I'm good. Just... maybe we avoid the ivy next time."
Mia leaned against the wall, arms crossed, staring at her two friends. "So, first Emma eats poisonous berries, now Annie gets a rash from toxic ivy. What's next? You guys gonna wrestle a cactus?"
Emma winced dramatically. "Oof, don't give fate any ideas."
Kai, glancing over at the clock, sighed. "If you two keep this up, I'll have to set up a permanent room for you here. You're becoming my most frequent patients."
Mia smirked. "You know, Kai, for someone who's always saving the day, you sure do love bossing us around."
Kai gave her a playful nudge. "It's my job. Now, why don't you all head back to the farm and, I don't know, try not to get into more trouble?"
Annie laughed softly. "No promises."
Emma stood up, stretching. "Alright, I guess we can take it easy for the rest of the day. Besides, after this, I think I've had enough excitement."
Mia nodded, grabbing her bag. "Let's go before Kai ropes us into more lectures."
As the girls turned to leave, Kai called out, "And no more eating random plants, okay?"
Emma waved him off with a grin. "No promises, doc!"
" Let me guess." Kai said as he eyed an unconscious Emma and Annie. " They were stung by a poisonous plant?"
" How'd you guess?"
Kai sighed. " Mimi, this is the second time today.
" In the span of an hour.
" This has really gotta stop."
Mia rolled her eyes. " Come on, bro. Be reasonable."
Kai crossed his arms, raising an eyebrow at Mia. "Reasonable? Mia, this is the second time today. In the span of an hour. Do you have any idea how much paperwork I have to fill out because of this?"
Mia gave a sheepish smile. "Okay, okay, maybe we've had a rough day, but—"
"Rough day?!" Kai interrupted, gesturing toward the unconscious Emma and Annie. "Mimi, they've been stung by a poisonous plant. Again."
Mia huffed. "It's not like we planned this, you know. It's a farm. Weird stuff happens."
Kai shook his head, exasperated. "You and your friends have got to be the most accident-prone group I've ever met."
Mia rolled her eyes but smiled at him. "Come on, bro. Be reasonable. We're just having some bad luck. It's not like we're trying to get into trouble."
Kai smirked, clearly unconvinced. "Yeah, tell that to the stack of medical reports I have with your name on them."
Mia stepped closer, giving him a teasing shove. "Oh please, admit it—you love being our hero."
Kai sighed dramatically. "It's a full-time job keeping you three out of the hospital. At this rate, I'll need to set up a 24/7 care unit just for you."
"Maybe you should," Mia joked. "With a cozy bed and some snacks, I wouldn't mind staying."
Kai shot her a playful glare. "Mimi, no more stunts. Or plants. Or anything that involves me having to fix you guys up. Got it?"
Mia put up her hands in surrender. "Got it, got it. We'll try to keep it chill from now on."
Kai eyed her warily but nodded. "Alright. Just don't make me regret it."
" They're gonna be oka-"
" HIP HIP HORAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!" Mia yelled as she danced around the room and almost hot the counter. " THEY'RE GONNA BE OKAYYYYYYYYYYYY!"
Kai sighed fondly as he leaned on the examination table holding the still unconscious girls. " You're a menace, you know that?"
Mia batted her eyelashes. " That's why you love me so much, Hot Head."
Kai smiled. " Maybe, Wojira. Maybe."
But then he pushed off the table, his expression serious. " However, there are some issu-"
" Oh, I knew it!" Mia said fretfully. " There's always something! Why did we let Emma out of the house?! Why didn't we read the manual?! Wh-"
" Mia, stop"! Kai shouted over the panicking. " Breathe."
Mia shot Kai a glare. " Easy for you to say, Kai."
Mia was in full-on panic mode, her hands frantically tugging at her hair as she paced the room. The walls echoed with her blood-curdling screams and frantic exclamations.
"WHY DIDN'T WE JUST STAY AT THE MONASTERY?!" she shrieked, throwing open a window and letting the cool air whip through the room. "WE COULD HAVE AVOIDED ALL THIS!"
Kai, though clearly exasperated, tried to stay calm. He placed a steadying hand on her shoulder. "Mia, you need to calm down. Panicking isn't going to help Emma or Annie."
But Mia was beyond reasoning at the moment. She flailed her arms wildly, her voice rising to a pitch that could shatter glass. "CALM DOWN?! HOW CAN I CALM DOWN?! MY FRIENDS ARE IN DANGER AND IT'S ALL MY FAULT!"
She stomped around the room, her frustration palpable. Every few seconds, she would let out another scream, her emotional state fluctuating wildly.
"THIS IS ALL MY FAULT! I SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE CAREFUL! I SHOULD HAVE—"
Kai grabbed her shoulders firmly. "Mia! Breathe! I'm telling you, panicking is not going to fix anything!"
Mia's eyes were wide, her breath coming in ragged gasps. "But what if something happens? What if—"
"Nothing is going to happen," Kai said firmly, though his voice was softer now. "Emma and Annie are being taken care of. They'll be fine. But you need to calm down so we can actually help them."
Mia took a deep breath, her gaze shifting between the unconscious girls and Kai. Her hands shook as she tried to compose herself, but the tears streaming down her face made it clear how overwhelmed she was.
"I just... I didn't want anything to go wrong," she said, her voice breaking. "I didn't want to mess up."
Kai pulled her into a hug, rubbing her back soothingly. "It's okay to feel this way, Mia. But you need to focus on what you can do right now. And that means staying calm."
Mia clung to Kai, taking slow, shuddering breaths as she tried to regain her composure. After a moment, she nodded, her voice still unsteady. "Okay. Okay, I'll try."
Kai gave her a reassuring squeeze. "That's all I ask. We'll get through this. Just breathe."
Mia took another deep breath and nodded, her panic slowly subsiding as she focused on calming down. "Thanks, Kai."
He smiled at her, though the concern in his eyes remained. "Anytime, Mimi. Now, let's make sure everything is in order and focus on getting our friends back on their feet."
Suddenly, Jay burst into the room, his eyes wide with alarm. "Who died?!"
He took in the sight of Mia, still visibly shaken, alongside the unconscious Emma and Annie. His expression shifted from panic to concern as he took in the situation. "Oh. Ohhh. Oh dear."
He looked at Mia, trying to find a way to ease the tension. "Yeah, um, Mia, how about we go out and eat?"
Mia, still fraught with worry, turned to Jay with incredulity. "Eat? EAT?! My friends can't even say hello, and you want to eat?!"
Jay winced, trying to keep his tone calm and soothing. "I know, it might sound crazy, but—"
"Crazy?!" Mia cut him off, her eyes blazing with frustration. "How can you think about eating when Emma and Annie are like this? They need our help, not our dinner!"
Jay sighed, looking at the situation with a mix of regret and empathy. "Mia, you need to take care of yourself too. You can't help them if you're completely exhausted and falling apart."
Mia shook her head vehemently. "No, Jay, I'm not leaving them. I need to stay here, help Kai, and make sure everything's okay."
Jay stepped closer, his voice gentle but firm. "I understand. But we can't be of any help if we're running on empty. Let's get something to eat, take a short break, and then come back. Kai's got everything under control for now."
Mia hesitated, her gaze flicking between Jay and the unconscious girls. She finally let out a long sigh, her shoulders slumping slightly. "Fine. But only because I don't want to make things worse. Let's go."
Kai, who had been quietly observing, gave Jay a grateful nod. "Thanks, Jay. I think you're right. Mia needs to take care of herself too."
Jay nodded, offering Mia a reassuring smile. "We'll be back soon. Just hang tight."
When Mia and Jay returned to the hospital room just five minutes later, Mia looked visibly worse for wear. Her usual energetic demeanor was replaced by an exhausted and distraught appearance. It was clear she hadn't managed to eat much, if anything at all.
Jay glanced at Kai with a sheepish look. "She, uh, tried to eat, but couldn't quite... uh.. erm.... ahem.... put it in her mouth."
Kai raised an eyebrow, clearly unimpressed. "You think?!"
Mia shot Kai a frustrated look. "Oh, come on, Kai! I was just trying to keep my energy up so I could be here for my friends."
Kai shook his head, trying to suppress a smile despite the tense situation. "Mia, you need to understand that while your friends are important, so are you. If you're running on empty, you're not helping anyone."
Mia grumbled but didn't argue. She turned her attention back to Emma and Annie, her worry evident. "How are they?"
Kai sighed, walking over to check their vitals. "They're stable now. The antidote is working, and they'll be okay. They just need to rest."
Mia let out a breath she didn't realize she was holding. "That's good. I just... I couldn't help but feel like I was failing them."
Jay placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. "You're doing your best, Mia. That's all anyone can ask for."
Kai looked at Mia with a softer expression. "Alright, how about this—get some rest yourself. I'll keep an eye on them. When they wake up, you'll be the first to know."
Mia nodded, though she still looked worried. "Okay. Thanks, Kai."
* Literally when Kai left the room five minutes later*
Five minutes after Kai left the room, Mia sneaked back in to check on Emma and Annie. She sat down carefully next to the beds, her eyes full of concern as she whispered, "Hey, girls. How you doing?"
She paused, peering closely at their still forms. "I don't know if you can hear me, but—"
"Mia?!" Kai's voice boomed as he re-entered the room, causing Mia to jump and let out a loud scream. Her heart raced as she realized it was just Kai.
"Kai, why do you have to scare me?!" Mia exclaimed, her voice high with agitation.
Kai shook his head, a mix of amusement and frustration on his face. "Because I'm the older one."
Mia scowled. "And I'm the older of the three, yet I let them get hurt. I wasn't responsible. I—"
"Okay, would you stop beating yourself up?" Jay interjected from the door, his tone gentle but firm.
Mia rolled her eyes at Jay. "Don't act like you haven't done it, Jay."
Jay's cheeks flushed red. "Well... there were times when—"
"Okay, would you two stop?!" Kai cut in from his seat, trying to focus on his coconut drink. "I need some peace to figure this out."
Annie stirred slightly on her bed, her eyes fluttering open. "Stop what?" she mumbled groggily.
"Mia!" Mia shouted, leaping up and nearly tackling Annie. "I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to—"
Annie, still disoriented, hugged Mia back. "Mia, it's okay. What happened?"
Emma groaned as she woke up too, noticing the commotion. "What's going on? Why is everyone shouting?"
Before anyone could respond, Emma tried to sit up but ended up bumping into Mia, who was still clinging to Annie. "Mia, you're crushing me!"
Mia, her anxiety clearly getting the better of her, started talking over everyone. "I was so worried! I thought I lost you guys! And then I tried to—"
"Guys, calm down!" Kai shouted, his frustration peaking. "You're shaking the entire room!"
But the group continued to talk over one another, each trying to express their concerns and apologies in a jumble of overlapping voices.
"Mia, I'm fine. Really, I am!" Emma said, trying to be heard.
"I didn't mean to overwater—" Mia began, only to be drowned out by Annie's panicked cries.
" I didn't mean to-"
" I'm so sorry-"
" Please don't-"
" I can't-"
" Why didn't-"
"Guys, seriously, let's take a breath!" Kai said, pushing his hands out to stop the chaos. He stood up and gently but firmly pulled Mia away from the bed.
"Everyone, please!" Kai's voice was louder than usual, commanding attention. "I need you all to calm down. You're overwhelming each other. Emma and Annie need rest, not a room full of panic. And Mia.... needs to calm down."
Mia took a deep breath, tears welling up in her eyes as she sat back down, clearly trying to regain her composure. "Okay, okay. I just wanted to make sure you're all okay."
Emma reached out, taking Mia's hand. "We're fine, Mia. We're okay now. Just... take a deep breath."
Annie nodded, her voice softer. "Yeah, we're all good. Just a little shaken, that's all."
Kai looked around at the three of them, shaking his head with a mix of exasperation and affection. "Like brother, like sister," he muttered. "Always the same."
Jay chuckled softly, trying to lighten the mood. "You know, maybe next time we should just get a manual on how to handle emergencies."
Mia managed a small smile, feeling a bit more grounded. "Yeah, maybe that's a good idea."
