Old Memories
It was a quiet afternoon at the monastery, the kind of peaceful day everyone had been longing for. Jay was sitting in the living room, flipping through a book with his feet up on the coffee table. Lloyd was on the other side of the room, relaxing on the couch with a drink in hand, and Kai had just walked in after finishing a training session, looking tired but content.
Mia, on the other hand, was conspicuously absent. Jay hadn't noticed at first, but as the afternoon dragged on, he began to feel uneasy. Whenever Mia was too quiet for too long, something was usually brewing.
Suddenly, Mia burst into the room, her face lit up with mischief, holding a glossy photo in her hand. "Hey, look what I found!" she sang, waving it around as she sauntered into the living room.
Jay glanced up lazily, but when he saw the picture, his eyes widened in horror. "Mia... where did you get that?!"
Mia grinned ear to ear. "Oh, you mean this?" She held the picture up for everyone to see. It was a snapshot of Kai cradling baby Jay, the picture exuding pure warmth and brotherly affection. In the photo, Kai was gently rocking Jay, who was nestled against him with his tiny hands gripping Kai's shirt. It was the kind of picture that would embarrass any grown man, let alone someone like Jay.
Jay shot up from the couch, almost tripping over his feet in his panic. " Mia where did you get that from?!"
Kai, now curious, came closer and squinted at the picture. His face immediately flushed as he realized what it was. "Wait, what?! Mia, give me that photo!"
Lloyd sat up straight, eyes wide with amusement. "Oh, this is gold. Mia, how did you get your hands on that?"
Mia tucked the picture behind her back, slowly backing away toward the door. "A magician never reveals her secrets," she teased, glancing at Jay's panicked expression with a gleam in her eyes.
Jay lunged toward her. "Mia! Give it back!"
But Mia was already gone, darting out of the room with surprising speed. Jay, realizing he was now in for a chase, sprinted after her, yelling, "You're so dead when I catch you!"
Mia laughed loudly, the sound echoing down the hall as she dashed up the stairs, expertly dodging Jay's outstretched hand. "You'll have to catch me first, slowpoke!"
Lloyd, not wanting to miss out on the fun, stood up and cracked his knuckles. "Well, I guess I know what I'm doing today. Kai, you in?"
Kai groaned, still flustered from the fact that the photo even existed. But the challenge in Lloyd's eyes was too tempting to ignore. "Fine," Kai muttered, though a small smile crept onto his face. "Let's get her."
They both took off down the hall, joining Jay in pursuit of Mia.
Meanwhile, Mia was laughing uncontrollably as she zoomed around the house, picture still firmly in hand. She skidded around corners, slid across the wooden floor in her socks, and hopped over furniture to keep her distance. Every time she glanced back, she saw Jay closing in on her, with Lloyd and Kai not far behind.
"Come on, Mia!" Jay shouted breathlessly. "We can work something out! How about I do your chores for a week? Just give me the picture!"
Mia only laughed harder. "Oh no, this one's going in the family scrapbook!"
Jay groaned. "Not the scrapbook!"
Lloyd called out from behind them. "Mia, if you give me the photo, I'll keep it safe from Jay and Kai!"
"Like I'd trust you with it!" Mia shouted back, hopping up onto the windowsill in the hallway and scrambling over a small shelf as she tried to escape.
Kai, who was trailing behind Jay, suddenly sprinted ahead, making a grab for her. "Mia, I'll trade you anything! Seriously-anything!"
Mia turned and smirked at him. "Oh, really? Anything"
Kai realized his mistake too late. "Wait... I didn't mean-"
Before he could finish, Mia leapt off the shelf and sprinted toward the kitchen. Jay let out a frustrated groan. "She's way too fast for her own good!"
By the time they reached the kitchen, Mia had already darted behind the island, using it as a barrier between her and the three boys. She twirled the photo in her fingers, taunting them. "You guys are gonna have to be smarter than this if you want it back."
Jay tried to circle around the island from the left, while Kai and Lloyd split off to the right. They thought they had her cornered, but Mia, with her quick reflexes, suddenly vaulted over the island, landing on the other side with a flourish. "Nice try!" she sang, sticking her tongue out at them as she backed toward the doorway.
"Mia, for the love of all things ninja hand over the picture!" Jay pleaded, exasperated.
But Mia, ever the troublemaker, suddenly ducked under Jay's arm and bolted out of the kitchen. She sprinted toward the living room again, her breath coming out in excited gasps as she tried to stay one step ahead.
As they entered the living room, Lloyd made a wild dive for her, but Mia dodged him with ease. "Nice try, Uncle Lloyd!" she called over her shoulder, her laughter filling the room.
Kai, frustrated by now, tried a different tactic. "Mia, if you don't give me that photo, I'm telling Blackie where you hid his favorite toy."
Mia stopped dead in her tracks, her eyes widening. "You wouldn't."
"Oh, I would," Kai said smugly, folding his arms.
Mia glared at him, clutching the photo tightly. But before she could make her next move, Jay finally seized the opportunity and tackled her to the ground in a fit of desperation. "Got you!" he panted, trying to wrestle the photo from her grasp.
Lloyd and Kai quickly jumped in, trying to help Jay, but Mia, despite being outnumbered, wasn't giving up easily. She twisted and turned, still laughing uncontrollably. "This is so unfair!" she giggled.
"Life's unfair!" Jay retorted, finally prying the photo free. He held it up triumphantly, panting as he sat back. "Finally!"
Mia sat up, still grinning. "You won this time, but there are more where that came from."
Jay's eyes widened again. "More?!"
Mia winked. "Oh yeah. I've got a whole collection."
Jay groaned and flopped onto the floor in defeat. "I'm doomed."
Kai stood up, laughing and shaking his head. "You're definitely doomed."
Lloyd chuckled, offering Jay a hand. "You'll never catch a break with her around."
As Jay took Lloyd's hand and got to his feet, he looked at his little sister, who was still sitting on the floor, beaming with satisfaction. He couldn't help but smile, despite himself. " Alright, Mia," he said, holding up the photo. "This one's going in the shredder."
"Yeah, sure, Jay," Mia said, waving him off. "But next time... maybe I'll frame it."
Jay groaned, but deep down, he knew he wouldn't trade this chaos for anything in the world.
Jay let out a long sigh of relief as he tucked the embarrassing baby photo into his pocket, glad to finally have it in his possession. Lloyd and Kai had wandered off, leaving him alone in the living room. He plopped back down on the couch, thinking the chaos was finally over.
But then, a soft giggle echoed down the hallway.
Jay froze, his eyes narrowing suspiciously. He recognized that giggle. Mia was up to something again. With a groan, he pushed himself off the couch and made his way toward her room. As he approached, the giggles grew louder, more mischievous.
"Mia... what are you doing now?" Jay muttered under his breath as he slowly opened her door.
The sight that greeted him was not what he expected. Mia was sitting cross-legged on her bed, surrounded by an old stack of papers, her cheeks red from trying to suppress her laughter. In her hands was a crinkled, faded drawing that Jay hadn't seen in years.
"Mia..." Jay began, eyeing the paper warily. "What's that?"
Mia, still giggling, held the paper up for him to see, her eyes twinkling with mischief. "Oh, just an old masterpiece I found!"
Jay leaned in to get a closer look-and immediately turned bright red.
The drawing was a crude childhood doodle Mia had made years ago. It featured none other than Jay and their friend Cole... but it wasn't just any drawing. No, this was a drawing of Jay and Cole getting married at a bizarre wedding ceremony, with a crowd of elderly women-depicted as children-clapping and cheering in the background. The grandmas had their faces scrunched up like little kids, and there was even a cake with "Jay and Cole Forever!" written across it.
"Mia..." Jay said slowly, a horrified expression spreading across his face. "Where did you even find this?"
Mia burst into a fit of giggles again, holding her sides as if the laughter was too much to contain. "You drew it when you were nine!" she managed to say between gasps of laughter. "Remember? You were upset because everyone kept teasing you and Cole, so you decided to 'get it over with!'"
Jay's face burned with embarrassment. He vaguely remembered the situation-some of the others had jokingly teased him about how close he and Cole were, and in a fit of childish frustration, he had jokingly drawn this ridiculous picture, thinking it would be funny to "marry" Cole to end the teasing once and for all.
"I thought I burned that drawing!" Jay exclaimed, reaching out to snatch it from Mia.
But Mia was quicker, holding the paper just out of his reach. "Nope! I saved it for the perfect moment, like today!" She laughed, waving the drawing like a flag.
"Mia, give it here!" Jay lunged for the paper, but Mia rolled off the bed and onto the floor, still clutching the drawing. She scrambled to her feet, darting around the room as Jay chased after her.
"Seriously, Mia, stop!" Jay pleaded, now redder than a tomato. "That's so embarrassing!"
Mia only laughed harder. "You should've seen your face when you saw the baby picture, but this... this is gold!"
Jay tried to grab the drawing again, but Mia spun away, laughing as she danced around her room. "Can you imagine showing this to Cole?" she teased. "He'd die laughing!"
"Don't you dare," Jay huffed, trying to corner her by the dresser.
Mia backed up, keeping a playful distance between them. "Come on, Jay, it's just a joke!"
"It was a joke when I was nine! Now it's just embarrassing!"
As the two of them darted around the room, Mia held the drawing triumphantly above her head. "Oh, don't be such a baby! Cole would find it hilarious! And look at the little grandmas-they're like kids! You can't tell me that's not funny!"
Jay stopped for a moment and couldn't help but glance at the drawing again. The little "grandmas" did look ridiculously cute, like tiny kids in elderly clothes, clapping happily in the background. He sighed, trying not to laugh. "Okay, fine, maybe it's *a little* funny," he admitted begrudgingly.
Mia grinned. "See? I knew you'd come around!"
Jay shook his head, holding his hand out. "Now, seriously. Can I have that back?"
Mia pouted dramatically but handed him the drawing. "Fine, fine. But I'm keeping a copy of it for my scrapbook!"
Jay groaned. "You and your scrapbook..."
As Jay took the drawing, he sat down on the edge of her bed, still embarrassed but also a little amused. He glanced at the picture one last time, the crude stick figures and crooked hearts making him cringe and laugh at the same time. "I can't believe I ever drew this," he muttered.
Mia plopped down next to him, smiling. "Hey, at least it's a good memory, right?"
Jay rolled his eyes but smiled softly. "Yeah... I guess."
Mia nudged him. "Don't worry, Jay. I'll keep this one safe. You've got enough blackmail on me anyway."
Jay raised an eyebrow. "Oh? Do I?"
Mia's eyes widened as she realized her slip-up. "Uh... never mind!"
Jay grinned, leaning back on the bed. "Looks like I'll have to go digging through your old drawings now."
Mia smirked. "Good luck finding them!"
As Jay folded up the drawing and tucked it away, he shook his head with a chuckle. "You're lucky I love you, Mia."
Mia grinned back. "Yeah, I know."
Jay sighed in relief as Mia finally handed over the embarrassing drawing of him and Cole, tucking it safely into his pocket. He pulled out his phone, intending to distract himself for a few minutes. Just as he was about to lose himself in a funny video, a sudden shout echoed through the house.
" MIA!"
It was Kai's voice, sounding both exasperated and panicked. Jay's heart dropped instantly, and he shot up from the bed, racing toward the sound. He already had a pretty good idea what might have happened.
Bursting into the hallway, he followed the noise and skidded to a halt when he reached the living room. There, standing with an enormous grin on her face, was Mia, proudly holding up another drawing. But this wasn't just any drawing. Oh no, it was a masterpiece of chaos-a wild, childish scribble from when Mia was barely two years old.
The picture was hilariously bad, with unrecognizable stick figures of Kai, Cole, and Jay. The trio appeared to be...kissing? And, if the scribbles were to be believed, surrounded by what could only be described as an army of kids. The "kids" were basically blobs with smiles, arms, and legs.
Kai stood off to the side, his face a mixture of disbelief and horror. He pointed at the paper, clearly at a loss for words. "Mia... wh-what is this?!"
Mia, beaming with pride, replied, "This is my family! I drew it when I was two!"
Jay groaned, running a hand through his hair. "Oi, Mia... seriously?"
Mia turned to Jay with an innocent expression. "What? It's cute! Look! I even drew all the babies!"
Jay stepped closer, rubbing his temples in frustration. "Mia... are they supposed to be kissing?"
Mia looked at the paper again, completely unfazed. "Yep! That's what you do when you love each other, right?" she said matter-of-factly.
Kai, still trying to process everything, muttered, "And... why are there so many kids? There's like, ten of them."
Mia giggled, shrugging. "I didn't know how many kids people have, so I just drew a lot!"
Jay couldn't hold back a laugh this time. As ridiculous as the picture was, it was also kind of adorable in its sheer absurdity. "Mia... you really outdid yourself with this one."
Kai, meanwhile, was still in disbelief, staring at his stick-figure self with wide eyes. "I don't even... why am I kissing Jay and Cole?!"
Mia shrugged again, completely unbothered. "Because you're all friends! Friends kiss sometimes!"
Jay, trying to hold back his laughter, put a hand on Kai's shoulder. "You heard her, Kai. Friends kiss."
Kai shot him an exasperated look. "Don't even start."
But Jay couldn't help it. He leaned over and squinted at the army of baby blobs in the background. "And look at all those kids! Apparently, we're raising a whole football team."
Mia, thrilled that they were finally appreciating her drawing, pointed to one of the larger blobs. "That one's you, Jay! And this one is Kai! And Cole is the one in the middle!"
Kai let out a long sigh, pinching the bridge of his nose. "This is too much..."
Jay gave Kai a teasing nudge. "Come on, man. You've gotta admit, it's pretty funny."
Kai, still trying to remain serious, huffed. "Funny? This is pure blackmail material!"
Mia, still completely oblivious to the chaos she had caused, folded the picture and handed it to Jay with a grin. "Here, you can keep this one too! You're welcome!"
Jay looked at the crumpled drawing in his hand, shaking his head with a mixture of amusement and defeat. "Thanks, Mia... I think?"
As Mia wandered off, completely satisfied with her day's mischief, Jay and Kai exchanged a look.
Jay sighed dramatically. "Well, at least it wasn't another baby picture."
Kai rubbed his forehead, clearly still trying to recover. "I need a break..."
Jay chuckled. "Yeah, same."
Just as Jay and Kai were about to relax from the chaos Mia had already caused, a loud, almost panicked yell echoed through the house.
"MIA!!"
It was Cole this time, his voice booming from the direction of the bathroom.
Jay and Kai exchanged exasperated glances. "Oh no... not again," Jay muttered under his breath.
Without wasting a second, they both hurried toward the bathroom. As they approached, they could hear Mia giggling, and Cole sounded... confused.
When they reached the doorway, they saw Mia standing proudly next to Cole, holding up another one of her infamous drawings. Cole was staring at the paper in complete shock, his face a mixture of disbelief and horror.
Kai, catching sight of the drawing, froze. There, in all its scribbly glory, was a picture of someone with an impossibly large, scraggly beard, massive eyebrows, and wild hair sticking out in every direction. It looked like some kind of caveman, covered head-to-toe in hair.
Kai's face went pale as he pointed at the drawing. "Wait... is that supposed to be me?!
Mia grinned mischievously, nodding her head. "Yep!" She giggled, then pointed to the figure. "This is Jay!"
Jay, who had been leaning on the doorframe, suddenly straightened up. "Wait... what?! That's me?" He stepped forward, squinting at the drawing.
The figure in the picture looked more like a fuzzy raisin than a person, with tiny stick legs and an exaggeratedly wrinkled face. It was almost cartoonish how shriveled and hairy the figure was.
Kai burst into laughter. "Mia, that's not Jay-that's a raisin with a beard!"
Jay groaned, facepalming. "Mia, come on! I don't look like that."
Mia, still completely amused, giggled again. "But you were wrinkly when you turned into a baby, so I thought this would be funny!"
Cole, who had finally recovered from his initial shock, looked at Kai with an amused grin. "Dude, I thought you were the hairy one in this drawing. I was about to say, you seriously need a haircut."
Kai, still laughing, pointed to the wild-haired figure. "That's me, right?"
Mia nodded, still beaming. "Yep! You're always saying you need a haircut, so I made you super hairy!"
Kai crossed his arms, pretending to be offended. "Mia, I do not look like a caveman! And Jay does not look like a raisin!"
Jay, now more amused than annoyed, leaned in to examine the picture. "You know, Kai, you're right. I think you look more like a bear."
Mia grinned proudly. "I was going for 'wild and free'!"
Kai rolled his eyes, playfully ruffling Mia's hair. "Well, I guess it's time for me to shave and for Jay to, uh... drink more water?"
Jay groaned, throwing his hands up. "I look like I've been out in the sun for a century in this thing!"
Cole, still chuckling, took a closer look at the drawing and added, "Jay, I think she captured your essence perfectly-prune-like and slightly fuzzy."
Jay shot Cole a look, trying to hide a smile. "Very funny, Cole."
Mia, ever the artist, handed the picture to Jay with a grin. "Here, you can keep this one too! It's a masterpiece!"
Jay took the picture, shaking his head with a sigh. "Thanks, Mia. I'll, uh, cherish it forever."
As Mia wandered off once more, probably to find her next victim, the three of them stood there, staring at the ridiculous drawing.
Kai shook his head, still grinning. "Well, at least we can laugh about it."
Jay folded the picture and stuffed it into his pocket. "Yeah, I guess so. Just as long as no one outside this house ever sees it."
Cole chuckled. "Oh, don't worry. This is definitely staying between us... and maybe a few close friends."
Jay raised an eyebrow. "Cole..."
"Just kidding!" Cole laughed, throwing his hands up in surrender.
Kai, with a smirk, patted Jay on the back. "Hey, at least you don't actually look like a raisin. Yet."
Jay let out a dramatic sigh, shaking his head. "Well, that's reassuring, I guess."
