Freezing
" It's a lovely day!" Mia exclaimed as she walked to the pool. " Perfect for a swim!"
Jay waved. " I have to go in. Kai wants me to help him with something. Will you be okay?"
Mia nodded. " I'm eight, Jay. I can handle myself in the pool!"
" Always move your body." Jay advised. " Touch the bottom! Oh, an-"
" Jay, I'll be fine." Mia reassured him as she turned.
Jay sighed. " Okay.$
As soon as Mia heard the door close, the squealed and jumped in, ready for the warmth to envelope her.
Except it didnt.
She let out a blood curling scream. " IT'S FREEZING!"
Kai and Jay and Charmander and Blackie and Pikachu rushed to her.
" What do you mean it's co-" Kai asked as he dipped his hand in, but stopped cold and pulled his hand out.
" Mia get out! Now!" He yelled.
Mia shivered as she climbed out. Jay held her as Kai ran next to them, his hand lit on fire.
Ten minutes later Mia was sitting in front of a fire, surrounded by a fire elemental and a fire dragon, sipping hot chocolate and covered in ten blankets.
" How was it cold?!" Jay mused as he sat opposite of Mia.
" I... K..now....on...et...hing......" She shivered.
" Pika?"
What's that?
" P...ur a hea...ter...int...he...b...be...ll..."
Mia shivered violently as her teeth chattered, trying to hold onto her mug of hot chocolate. Her face had turned a light shade of blue, and her fingers were almost numb. "I... I can't... feel my hands," she managed to get out between shivers.
Kai furrowed his brow, his worry deepening. He glanced at Charmander, who immediately lit a small, controlled flame on Mia's fingertips. The warmth slowly spread through her hands, and Mia sighed in relief, her shivering subsiding slightly. "Oh... that's good," she murmured.
Jay, sitting across from her, frowned in concern. “How did it get that cold so fast? It’s supposed to be warm out today! I don't get it!”
Mia sniffled, pulling the blankets tighter around herself. “I... I don’t know. One minute the sun was out, and the next, the pool felt like ice...”
Charmander moved closer, trying to offer more heat, while Pikachu stood on the edge, sparks jumping off his cheeks in anticipation. “Pika?”
Kai was pacing back and forth, his hand still ignited as he thought things over. “There’s no way the pool should have been that cold unless... something's tampered with it,” he muttered. “Blackie, any chance you saw anything?”
Blackie, sitting calmly by the fire, flicked his tail. “Hmm. Not a thing,” he replied, his tone filled with sass. “But I wasn’t exactly keeping an eye on the pool. Perhaps you should’ve installed some security cameras.”
Jay sighed. “This is why I told you to always check things, Mia. I don’t know how this happened, but we’ll figure it out.”
Mia, her face warming up thanks to Charmander's fire, managed a weak smile. “I... I’m okay, Jay. I just didn’t expect it to be that cold...”
Kai stopped pacing and turned to face them. “It could be someone playing a prank, or... there could be something more going on here. Either way, until we figure it out, no more pool for today.”
Mia nodded slowly, her hands now fully warmed. “Yeah, I think I’m good with just the hot chocolate for now.”
Kai patted her on the head. “Good call.”
Just then, Blackie stretched and said lazily, “Next time, you might want to check if an ice elemental took a dip before you jump in.”
Mia blinked. “An ice elemental...?”
Jay groaned. “Oh no... don’t tell me we have another elemental prankster around here.”
Pikachu’s ears twitched as if he sensed something. “Pika pika!” he exclaimed, pointing toward the pool.
Kai’s eyes narrowed. “We need to keep a lookout. Just in case.”
Mia, now bundled up and recovering, gave a determined nod. "Next time, I'll be ready."
" ' take a hot bath, Mia's"." Mia muttered. " I hope Kai's right. I mean he's the fire elemental but...."
She shrugged, and looked at her cat, who was on the toilet.
" Blackie, I need some privacy!*
The car stretched. " Not gonna happen." He said.
Mia sighed. " Okay."
She stepped in, turned the faucet, and....
Screamed.
" IT'S FREEZING KAIIIII!!!!"
Mia was trembling as she quickly wrapped herself in a thick robe, her teeth chattering. Just as she was about to call again, Kai and Jay burst into the bathroom, panic written all over their faces.
Kai’s eyes darted to Mia, who was clearly distressed. “What happened?!”
Mia, still shivering, pointed at the faucet. “Feel it! It’s freezing!”
Jay, ever the concerned big brother, stepped forward first. “It can’t be that—” He placed his hand under the faucet, and immediately his face contorted in shock.
“AHHHH!!” Jay screamed, yanking his hand back as if it had touched ice. “It’s like someone shoved my arm into the Arctic! What in the world?!”
Kai frowned, his brow furrowing deeper. He stepped forward, cautiously reaching out to touch the water himself. As soon as his fingers grazed the freezing liquid, he pulled his hand back just as quickly, though he didn’t scream like Jay. “That’s... unnatural. This isn't normal cold water—something or someone’s messing with our pipes.”
Blackie, lounging on the toilet as if none of this was his problem, lazily flicked his tail. “Told you it wasn’t going to be a normal bath day,” he said smugly.
Mia, now clutching her robe tighter, looked up at Kai. “What’s going on? Why is everything freezing all of a sudden?”
Kai shook his head. “I don’t know, but it’s definitely elemental. Someone’s using ice power nearby, and it's affecting our water.”
Jay, rubbing his hand to warm it up, groaned. “Can’t we have one normal day? Just one?”
Kai sighed, stepping away from the faucet and turning to Mia. “Alright, no more baths or pools until I can figure out what's going on.”
Mia, still shivering but trying to maintain her usual tough demeanor, nodded. “Fine by me. I’m done with cold water for life.”
Jay shot a glance at Blackie, who was still lounging without a care. “You didn’t see anything suspicious, did you?”
Blackie yawned. “Nothing except you two running around like headless chickens. Maybe check with your elemental friends instead of blaming the cat.”
Kai crossed his arms, thinking. “If this is someone playing a prank, they’re getting on my nerves fast.”
Mia sighed, her fingers finally starting to warm up. “Well, whatever it is, I just hope it doesn’t happen again. I’m really starting to miss heat.”
Kai placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. “Don’t worry, I’ll make sure it doesn’t happen again. And in the meantime, we’ll figure out who’s behind this.”
Jay, still shaking off the cold, muttered, “Next time, I’m wearing a coat to the bathroom.”
Two hours later, the house was quiet.
Too quiet.
So Jay decided to check on his sister.
When he arrived at her door, he gasped.
" Oh. My. Gosh. Oh sweet mother may I."
Mia and her Pokemon were freezing. Charmander was trying to light his tail on fire, but it wasn't working.
" Bulba?" Mia shivered. " D... Do y...out...think....thea...ir...co..nei...ti..nor is... Over....work..king?"
" Bulba."
Jay’s heart raced as he stood frozen in the doorway, taking in the chilling sight before him. Mia and her Pokémon, huddled together, were visibly shivering. Charmander, his usual warm tail flickering weakly, struggled to produce any heat. Even Bulbasaur, a sturdy little Pokémon, was trembling.
“Oh, sweet mother may I,” Jay muttered in disbelief, rushing into the room. “Mia! What’s going on?”
Mia, her lips slightly blue and her words broken by shivers, looked up weakly. “D...Do you... think... the a... air con..dit... ioner... is o-over...working?”
Jay knelt beside her, feeling the sheer cold radiating through the room. He shook his head. “No way the AC could be doing this. It’s way too cold for that. This has to be something else.”
He looked around the room, his eyes narrowing. The whole place felt unnaturally cold, much colder than any malfunctioning air conditioner could cause. Mia’s Pokémon, usually resilient, were clearly struggling to cope. Charmander, in particular, seemed on the verge of losing the flame on his tail—a dangerous sign for any fire-type Pokémon.
“Bulba,” Bulbasaur added, weakly shivering beside Mia.
Jay pulled Mia closer to him, trying to warm her with his own body heat. “Hang in there, Mia. We’re gonna figure this out. Kai’s gonna fix this. We just need to get you out of this freezing room.”
Just as Jay stood up, cradling his freezing little sister, a sudden gust of icy wind blew through the room. He shielded Mia and the Pokémon with his arms. “What the—?!”
The temperature dropped even more, and frost began creeping up the walls. Jay’s breath came out in visible puffs of air, and it became clear that this was no ordinary cold.
“We’ve got to get out of here, now!" Jay said, scooping Mia up. He rushed to the door, motioning for her Pokémon to follow. Charmander and Bulbasaur slowly dragged themselves toward him, their movements sluggish from the cold.
As Jay carried Mia out of the room, his mind raced. Who could be behind this? An ice elemental? A villain with control over the cold? Whatever it was, it was affecting the entire house—and they were running out of time.
He ran down the hall, bursting into Kai’s room. “Kai! We’ve got a serious problem!”
Kai turned from his desk, immediately sensing the change in temperature. “What the—why is it so cold in here?” He stood up, rushing over to Jay and Mia. “Is she okay?”
Jay shook his head. “No! Mia’s room—it’s like a freezer in there! Her Pokémon can barely move, and Charmander’s flame is almost out! This isn’t natural.”
Kai’s expression hardened. “An elemental force. It has to be.”
Jay nodded, shivering. “Yeah. And if we don’t figure this out soon, it’s going to get worse.”
Kai looked down at Mia, who was still trembling in Jay’s arms. “Alright, let’s get her warm first. Then, we’re going to find out who or what is causing this.”
With a determined look, Kai ignited his hands with his fire powers and started generating heat around Mia, slowly bringing her body temperature back up. Jay stood by, clutching his sister close, his mind already working on what they would do next.
Whatever was behind this, it wasn’t just a problem for their house—it could be the start of something much bigger.
After just ten seconds, Mia began to feel her strength return, thanks to Kai's warmth. She blinked, her shivers subsiding, and then her eyes widened as she saw her Pokémon—Charmander, Bulbasaur, Pikachu, and Squirtle—all huddled together, still trembling from the intense cold.
“Oh my goodness!” Mia exclaimed, rushing to their side. “What happened to you four?!”
Charmander’s flame was barely flickering, and Pikachu’s usual spark seemed dim. Bulbasaur looked sluggish, and Squirtle's shell was covered in frost. All four of them clung to Mia, seeking warmth.
“Kai, come here! We have to help them!” Mia called out, panic in her voice.
Kai quickly joined Mia, kneeling beside her and the Pokémon. His hands glowed with a gentle flame as he carefully warmed each of them, bringing them back from the edge of freezing. Mia hugged her Pokémon tightly as they slowly regained their strength, their shivers easing as the warmth spread.
Charmander’s tail flame flared back up, Pikachu gave a weak but grateful “Pika,” and Bulbasaur and Squirtle finally stopped shaking.
Just as things seemed to be settling, a voice echoed from the attic. “THE WIRES FOR THE HEATER ARE CUT!” Blackie’s voice bellowed down from above, his tone filled with urgency.
Mia and Kai both looked up, startled.
“What?!” Kai exclaimed, standing up quickly. “That’s why the whole house is freezing!”
Mia frowned, her mind racing. “Who would cut the heater wires? And why?”
Jay, who had been standing by the door, looked as serious as ever. “Whoever did this is definitely targeting us. We need to get those wires fixed—fast.”
Kai nodded. “Let’s go check it out. I’ll heat the place up for now, but we can’t leave those wires like that.”
Mia, still holding onto her Pokémon, stood up with determination. “I’ll help too. Whoever’s behind this is not getting away with it.”
"Yeah, that's not good," Jay stated as he crossed his arms, trying to make sense of the situation.
Mia shot him an exasperated look. "Of course not, Einstein! I've been targeted three times already!" She huffed, rubbing her arms to keep warm.
Just then, Zane walked in, his usual calm expression on his face. "Why is the house freezing?" he asked, glancing around. "I assure you, I have not used my elemental powers for quite some time."
Kai rolled his eyes. "It's not you, Zane. Blackie just said the heater wires are cut."
Zane raised an eyebrow, his internal systems clearly scanning the house for any anomalies. "Intriguing. Sabotaging the heater indicates premeditated intent. We should locate the source of this interference."
Mia, still standing protectively with her Pokémon, nodded. "I’m telling you, someone’s targeting me! First the pool, then the bath, and now the whole house. Who would want to mess with me like this?"
Jay, realizing the severity, uncrossed his arms and approached her. "Okay, okay, we get it, Mia. But we're gonna fix it. Kai, can you keep the place warm for now?"
Kai nodded and raised his hand, a small flame dancing in his palm. "Yeah, but this is only temporary. We need to get those wires fixed ASAP."
Zane tilted his head thoughtfully. "Allow me to inspect the cut wires in the attic. I may be able to find clues about who tampered with them."
Mia turned to him, her face determined. "I'll come with you. If someone’s out to get me, I want to know who."
Zane nodded in agreement. "Very well. Let us proceed."
Jay called out as they headed to the attic. "Be careful, you two! If it’s another trap, we need to be ready."
In the attic, the chill was even worse than below. The air seemed to bite at Mia’s skin, her breath visible in front of her. Her four Pokémon clung tightly to her, their little bodies trembling from the cold.
Mia raised her hand, summoning her fire element. A warm glow surrounded them, slowly pushing the freezing air away. The flames flickered gently, casting shadows across the dim attic, revealing old boxes and forgotten furniture covered in a fine layer of dust.
As the warmth spread, Mia’s sharp eyes caught sight of Blackie curled up miserably in the corner, shivering. "Blackie!" she called softly.
The moment he saw her, his green eyes lit up, and he let out a soft, weak meow. Mia immediately opened her arms, and without hesitation, Blackie leaped into them, burying his face in her chest. She stroked his fur gently, feeling the tension leave his body as he pressed closer, seeking her warmth.
"Don’t worry, Blackie. I’ve got you," she whispered as she rubbed behind his ears. Her Pokémon huddled closer, too, thankful for the fire and her warmth.
Zane, who had been scanning the wires, turned his head toward Mia. "It seems the wires were not only cut but intentionally sabotaged," he said, his voice steady but filled with concern. "Whoever did this made sure the heater would fail in this extreme weather."
Mia frowned as she cradled Blackie. "But why? And how did they get up here without us noticing?"
Zane's eyes glowed a bright blue as he processed the information. "That is what we must determine. But first, we need to repair the wiring. I will reroute the connections to restore heat to the house temporarily."
Mia nodded, hugging Blackie closer. "I’m not letting whoever did this get away with it. They’ve messed with the wrong person."
" Zane says he's gonna fix the wires." Mia said as she jumped from the stairs.
" Should we tell Wu? And the others?" Kai asked.
Jay sighed and ran a hand through his hair. " I dinn-"
" AIEEEEEEEEE!" someone yelled from the bathroom. " IT'S FREEZING!"
" LLOYD!" Kai yelled. " Are you okay?"
Lloyd came out of the bathroom, wrapped in a towel. " Yeah. But what's with the water?"
Mia shrugged. " Dunno."
Jay shot her a look. Mia shot one back to him.
Lloyd saw the exchange. " What happened?"
Mia shifted awkwardly as she avoided Lloyd's gaze. Jay scratched the back of his neck, trying to come up with something, but before he could speak, Mia blurted out, "The heater's been sabotaged. Zane's up in the attic fixing the wires now."
Lloyd’s eyes widened. "Sabotaged? By who?"
Jay sighed, rubbing his temples. "We don’t know yet, but it's clear someone cut the wires on purpose."
Kai crossed his arms, looking worried. "This isn't just some random malfunction. Someone's targeting us—again."
Lloyd, still shivering from his freezing cold shower, grumbled, "Why is it always something?"
Mia, seeing Lloyd's discomfort, gave him a small smirk. "Well, at least you didn't scream like a baby this time."
Lloyd shot her a playful glare. "Ha, ha. Very funny. But seriously, what’s our plan?"
Jay paced back and forth, thinking it over. "First, we need to figure out who’s behind this. And second, we need to make sure it doesn't happen again. Zane’s fixing the heater, but we need to stay on alert. If someone got into the attic without us noticing, they could’ve done more than just cut some wires."
Kai nodded in agreement. "I'll check the perimeter for any signs of a break-in. Whoever did this might’ve left clues behind."
"I’ll help with that," Lloyd said, tightening his towel around him as he headed off to get dressed.
Jay turned to Mia. "Mia, you stay here and keep an eye on the house. If anything else weird happens, let us know right away."
Mia rolled her eyes but nodded. "Yeah, yeah, I got it."
Just then, Blackie, still nestled in Mia's arms, let out a loud yowl. "I told you earlier—the wires were cut! But no one listens to the cat." He flicked his tail irritably.
Mia chuckled, giving him a gentle scratch behind the ears. "We heard you, Blackie. Don’t worry, we’re on it."
As everyone scattered to check things out, Mia leaned against the wall, watching her Pokémon cuddle close for warmth. "Looks like we’re in for another wild day, huh, guys?"
Charmander chirped softly, lighting his tail a little brighter.
Later that day, Jay decided to check on Mia again. He opened the door to her room and was greeted by a surprising sight. Mia was sitting on the floor. All of them were wearing makeshift masks that looked suspiciously like ninja disguises. They appeared to be involved in some kind of stealth mission, tiptoeing around the room dramatically.
Jay raised an eyebrow. "Mia... what exactly is going on in here?"
Mia froze for a moment, her eyes wide, then jumped up, waving her hands. "Uh... nothing happened! We're being serious! Totally normal stuff!" she blurted out, looking guilty.
Pikachu, still wearing his mask, nodded earnestly in agreement, which only made the scene more ridiculous. Mia groaned in frustration, clearly realizing how suspicious they all looked.
Jay crossed his arms and smirked. "Uh-huh, nothing happened, huh? Because it sure looks like you’re plotting something with your Pokémon."
Mia sighed, scratching the back of her head. "Okay, fine, maybe we were... practicing our ninja skills."
Jay chuckled. "Practicing ninja skills with masks? And what exactly are you training for?"
Mia grinned, recovering quickly. "In case of another sabotage! We have to be ready for anything, right? Plus, the Pokémon need to learn stealth if they’re gonna help us out."
Jay shook his head, amused. "Well, I guess you have a point there. Just don’t get into too much trouble, okay?"
Mia gave him a mock salute. "No promises!"
As Jay left the room, he couldn’t help but laugh. "She’s more like me than I thought," he muttered to himself, knowing Mia was always up to something, even when she claimed otherwise.
Just as Jay was about to leave the hall, a loud shout erupted from behind him.
"CHARMANDER, DON’T LIGHT MY BED ON FIRE!" Mia screamed, her voice filled with panic.
Jay spun around and ran back to see Mia frantically waving her arms at Charmander, whose tail flame had gotten a little too close to her bed. The small fire-type Pokémon, oblivious to the impending disaster, wagged his tail innocently, causing the tip of the flame to nearly scorch the sheets.
"Squirtle, quick!" Mia yelled, pointing to the flames.
Squirtle, ever the enthusiastic helper, sprang into action. The little water-type inhaled deeply, then unleashed a powerful stream of water directly at the fire.
WHOOSH
The flames were extinguished instantly, but the water didn’t stop there. It shot across the room, dousing the fire on the bed... and soaking Mia’s entire desk, including her computer.
"NO! Not on my computer, Squirtle!" Mia shouted, wide-eyed, as she saw the water dripping off her keyboard and monitor.
Squirtle looked back at her sheepishly, rubbing the back of his head with his tiny paw, clearly not meaning any harm. But before Mia could react, there was another problem.
"Pika...CHUUUUU!"
Without warning, Pikachu released an electric shock that surged through the room, zapping everyone in its path.
Jay, who had just been about to step out the door, felt the electricity course through him, making his hair stand up on end as his muscles tensed. "AHHH! PIKACHU!" he cried, jumping back as the shock pulsed through his body.
Mia, now a soggy mess, groaned in frustration as the electricity danced through her too, her hair frizzing into a wild mess. Charmander squealed in surprise, his tail flame sputtering for a moment, while Squirtle was left shaking as the electric current jolted through his little blue body.
Pikachu stood there, looking pleased with himself as if he had just saved the day.
Mia, recovering from the shock, let out a long sigh, placing a hand on her forehead. "Next time... don't shock us, Pika," she grumbled, rubbing her temples as if she had the biggest headache in the world.
Pikachu looked back at her, tilting his head with a confused "Pika?" as if to say, What did I do wrong?
Jay, who was still standing awkwardly in the doorway, now resembled something close to a frizzy-haired cartoon character. His eyes were wide in disbelief. "How does this always happen when I check on you?" he muttered under his breath.
Mia slumped into her chair, water dripping from her hair, her bed slightly singed but intact, and her computer screen flickering ominously. She glanced at the Pokémon, each of them now looking guilty in their own unique way.
Charmander’s tail flame flickered weakly, Squirtle was fiddling nervously with his paws, and Pikachu was scratching his head as if unsure why everyone seemed upset.
Mia sighed again, leaning back in her chair. "We need a system... or a fireproof bed... or maybe just fewer disasters per day."
Jay couldn’t help but laugh, even though his body still tingled from the electric shock. "You’ve got quite the crew here, Mia."
"Yeah," Mia replied, glancing at her Pokémon with a soft smile. "But I wouldn’t trade them for anything."
Pikachu let out a happy "Pika!" as if to affirm Mia’s statement, while Charmander and Squirtle both gave her proud little salutes, ready for the next adventure—even if it meant a few more accidents along the way.
