Warning - contains four kids at the core of the Earth.
" Something doesn't seem right....." Mia mused as she looked at the walls.
" Right?" Sunnie agreed as she observed the cave walls. " Maybe it's the lighting?*
" Nah, lighting's fine." Emma said as she sketched. " It's something else."
Annie, who had been reading the map, gasped. The map dropped out of her hands and floated to the ground.
" Ann? What happened?" Emma asked as she looked up.
Annie turned to her friends. " Do you know where we are?"
" A cave?" Sunnie guessed.
" A very hot one, too." Mia added
Annie slapped her head. " No!"
" Then where are we?" Emma asked, tilting her head
" Oh, nowhere special." Annie said, trying to keep her voice neutral. " Just the core of the Earth."
Time froze for everything and everyone.
" T... The... C... C... Co...re... O...o...of WHERE?!" a voice from Mia's bag shrieked.
Sunnie blinked. " Annie.... Please tell me you're joking."
" I don't think she is." Emma said.
" What makes you say that?" Mia asked as she turned to Emma.
Then she froze
" Because this orange juice is really hot." Emma said as she took a sip of the bright orange liquid.
" EMMA THAT'S NOT ORANGE JUICE!" Annie yelled
Emma blinked.." oh? What is it?"
" LAVA!"
" Oh. Well, lava's very tasty."
Blackie jumped out of Mia's bag and into her shoulder. " Did I hear that right? We're in the core of the Earth?!"
Annie nodded. " With no way out."
"How did we even get here?" Sunnie muttered, glancing around nervously.
Mia wiped the sweat from her brow, trying to steady her breath. "I don't know. One minute we were just hiking, and now... we’re in the freaking core of the Earth?"
Annie shook her head, still in shock. "I-I think I messed up the map. I didn’t realize—"
"Annie, what do you mean 'you messed up the map'?" Mia interrupted, voice shaky. "How do you even accidentally end up in the core of the Earth?"
"I didn't know the map was going to... do this!" Annie stammered, her hands trembling as she picked up the map. It was now glowing faintly, pulsing with some otherworldly energy. "I thought it was just a shortcut to the summit! But now... I think it's a map to something way deeper than that."
"You think?" Emma said dryly, still sipping the lava—her face unreadable. "This is like the worst hiking detour ever."
Sunnie rubbed her temples. "Okay, so we're trapped in the core of the Earth. No big deal."
Mia shot Sunnie a look. "No big deal?! This is the core of the Earth we're talking about. We're gonna melt from the inside out!"
Blackie, perched on Mia's shoulder, growled low in his throat. "I didn't sign up for this. We need a way out, or I'm jumping into the nearest lava stream. At least that'd be quicker."
Annie's expression darkened. "We don't even know how deep we are, or if there's a way out. We're probably surrounded by layers of rock, magma, and who knows what else." She paused, looking at the others. "We might have to find a way to create an exit."
"Create an exit?" Mia asked, incredulity in her voice. "Like with a shovel? Or, I don't know, a pickaxe?"
"No," Annie said, frowning. "With something bigger. We might need to... well, something like—"
Before she could finish, the ground beneath them rumbled with a deep, low growl, like a warning.
Mia's eyes widened. "Did you hear that?"
"Uh, yeah," Sunnie replied, her voice tense. "Is that... something else in here with us?"
Emma stood up, her sketchbook now tucked into her bag as she scanned the surroundings. "We don't have time to figure it out. We need to move, now."
Blackie leapt from Mia's shoulder and stood tall, his fur puffed up. "She's right. I've got a feeling we're not the only ones down here."
The tremor beneath them intensified. Something massive was stirring deep within the molten layers.
Annie swallowed hard. "Well... I guess we'd better figure out how to get out of here before we become part of the lava flow."
Sunnie clenched her fists. "Let's go. We're not getting roasted by some giant magma monster. Not today."
With a shared nod, they started toward the nearest tunnel, the faint echo of rumbling following them as the ground continued to shake.
"Next time," Mia said, her voice resolute, "we're sticking to the surface."
" Uh, guuuuuuys......."
Mia raised a brow as she leaned on the cave wall. " What now?"
" Well, uh.... Instead of heading back home we're.... At the other side of the world."
Mia blinked." Wait, what??"
Emma was chewing on something. " This isn't all that bad."
" What are you eating?" Blackie asked, ears low.
Emma blinked. " Huh? Oh, some of the fruit on the walls. See?" She picked a stone and popped it into her mouth. " This fruit is real flavorful."
Annie recoiled. "Emma, that’s a rock! Not fruit!"
"Oh..." Emma paused, a little embarrassed. "Whoops. That explains the crunch. I guess I was just hungry, okay?"
Blackie groaned and leaped off Mia’s shoulder, swiping at the stone. "You’re eating rocks? Do you know how many minerals you’re probably consuming right now?"
Sunnie put a hand to her forehead. "I think we have bigger problems than Emma’s odd dietary choices right now."
Mia sighed, trying to hold back a laugh. "Let’s just focus on figuring out where we are. There’s no way we’ve crossed the entire world that quickly, right?"
Just as Mia said that, the ground beneath them shifted slightly, a faint rumbling sound accompanying it. The walls seemed to pulse with a soft glow, and an unfamiliar creature’s distant call echoed through the cave. It sounded like it came from deep within the cavern, something large... and definitely not human.
"Okay, now that’s not something I want to hear," Sunnie said, her voice tense.
Emma, still nibbling on something (now a much safer-looking piece of fruit), looked at the others, blissfully unaware. "It’s probably just a really cool underground bird."
Mia gave Emma a dry look. "Let’s just go with that for now."
Blackie’s fur was standing on end. "You know, I don't like this one bit. I’m all for adventure, but I didn’t sign up for this."
Mia nodded, eyes scanning the eerie surroundings. "Right. We need to find out where we are, get some answers, and then—hopefully—get out of here before things get even weirder."
And with that, they cautiously continued their journey through the strange cave, the distant rumble of something unknown echoing in the distance.
" THIS IS NOT WHAT I SIGNED UP FOOOOOR!" Annie screamed
" SOMEONE DO SOMETHING!" Sunnie yelled.
" OOH- OOH- AH- AH- WHY DID I JUST DO THAT?!" Emma shouted.
" BECAUSE WE'RE LOSING IT!" Mia yelled back.
" LESS TALK MORE RUUUUN!" Blackie screamed.
Mia glanced back. " IT'S GAINING ON US!"
" HOW IS A BOULDER SO QUICK?" Sunnie yelled.
" THE VELOCITY IT'S TRAVELING A-"
" I DIDN'T ACTUALLY WANT TO KNOW ANNIE!"
The group was now in full-on panic mode, running as fast as their legs would carry them, but the boulder was relentless, its rumbling vibrations making it feel as if the whole cave was shaking.
Mia reached out with her hands, a blast of wind gusting in an attempt to slow the boulder, but it barely seemed to have an effect. "This is impossible!" she gritted through clenched teeth.
"SOMEBODY DO SOMETHING!" Sunnie wailed again, her voice growing increasingly frantic.
Annie, barely keeping up, had a sudden realization. "Wait! The map! We need to use it! Maybe it has some kind of solution!"
"DO YOU REALLY THINK WE HAVE TIME FOR THAT?!" Mia yelled, feeling the heat of the lava rolling from behind them.
"NO, BUT I’M GONNA TRY!" Annie shouted, fumbling with the glowing map in her hands. As she waved it frantically, a sudden crack in the wall above them erupted, causing stones to fall and block their path.
"WE’RE TRAPPED!" Sunnie screamed, her panic rising as she tried to find a way through the debris.
"Not yet!" Mia growled. She was not giving up without a fight. With a quick breath, she conjured a strong gust of wind, clearing a path through the rubble just as the boulder was almost upon them.
"HURRY!" Mia shouted, the wind swirling around her as she pushed the group forward. They scrambled through the newly opened gap, barely squeezing through before the massive boulder crashed into the fallen rocks, sending a tremor through the air.
Emma paused to catch her breath. "Well, that was... intense."
Blackie, shaking his head, muttered, "Not helping, Emma."
Sunnie leaned against the rock wall, panting heavily. "Okay... okay, that was way too close."
"Yeah, let’s not do that again," Annie agreed, looking over her shoulder at the still-crumbling path behind them.
Mia wiped the sweat from her brow, her heart still pounding. "We’re not out of the woods yet," she said, glancing nervously around the dark cave. "But let’s just focus on getting out of here alive first."
Blackie, still perched on Mia’s shoulder, muttered, "This place is one giant nightmare."
