Chasing Emma
" Hey, Mia?"
" Hmmm?"
" Do you think I could take the van out and go off a ramp and fly to outer space?"
Mia turned to her friend. " I suppose."
Emma cheered. " Thanks!"
Then she ran off, leaving Mia to shake her head fondly.
" She's joking.... right?" Mia muttered.
" She wasn't joking! She wasn't joking!" Mia yelped as she ran.
" Emma stop!" Annie yelled.
Emma was too busy with her sketches to even hear them. " Hmm.... I wonder which color I should use...."
Then, it happened.
Emma looks up and saw the ramp. " Oh. That was fast."
Mia watched in horror as the van shot off the ramp.
Then.... It vanished.
Annie blinked. " Did.... That just happen?!"
" I should think so." A sassy voice said.
Mia sighed. " Cut it out."
" Why?" The owner of the sassy voice hopped on Mia's shoulder.
" Because now isn't the time, Blackie!"
The black cat meowed. " It's always time to be sassy, owner."
Mia rolled her eyes. " Okay, your Highness."
Then she squinted up. " Annie, get emma on the phone."
" Already on it."
The phone rang.
Once.... Twice.... Three times.... Then....
" Hey, guys. What's up?" Emma's nonchalant voice came through.
Mia grabbed the phone. " Emma, what are you doing?!"
" Sketching the earth and moon. It's actually really amazing!"
" Emma, you're gonna run out of air!"
" Oh yeah."
Mia and Annie sighed, thinking she'll come back.
" Okay, okay.... I'll add rocket boosters!"
Mia's eyes widened. " WHAT?!"
they could hear the clink of tools and hammers.
" What is she doing?!" Annie hissed.
Mia shrugged.
" Time to find out if the moon is really made of cheese!"
Mia almost choked. " What?!" She said weakly.
" Yeah! I really want a bite of it!"
Annie's eyes widened. " Emma, no!"
" Why not?"
" Because... Because.... Because the moon isn't made of cheese!"
" Oh." Emma sounded discouraged.
Mia sighed. " Why don't you come home?"
" Can't."
Anne's eyes bungled. " What?! Why not?!"
" Because I'm busy adding a metal claw to the car."
" M.. metal claw?!" Mia exclaimed.
" Uh huh."
Mia sighed. " She's crazy." She muttered.
Annie shrugged her shoulders. " At least she's finally getting a moonstone?"
Mia shot her a look. " Not helping."
Annie shrugged again. " Sorry."
Suddenly, they heard a cheer.
" Emma?" Mia asked. " What's going on?"
" I got a piece of the moon!"
Mia and Annie sighed, then cheered too.
" Now to sketch the moon and its craters."
The two girls smiles vanished.
" What?!" Mia yelled.
They heard a scratching of pencil, and she sound of the engine rumbling. " Em, where are you going right now?" Annie asked fearfully.
" Neptune."
Mia gasped. " Neptune?!"
" Yeah. What's wrong with that?"
" Oh, nothing. Only that you're DRIFTING AWAY FROM US!"
" Chill, Mia."
Mia opened her mouth to say something, but nothing came out.
She was at a loss on what to say.
Annie, on the other hand, wasn't.
" Emma, get back here right now!"
" I can't."
" Why?"
" Because I'm collecting Jupiter's gas."
Annie blinked. " Uh... What?!"
" Yeah. I collected some Mars and Mercury rocks. I tried to do Venus but... It did not end well."
" Of course it didn't end well, Emma!" Mia exclaimed. " Venus is so hot it can melt metal!"
" At least it didn't melt the car."
Mia blinked, then turned to Annie. " You made that car really resistant."
Annie sheepishly scratched her head. " Gee, thanks."
Then she turned serious again. " But seriously, Emma."
" I'm sketching Unanus."
Mia bit her lip to keep herself from having an outburst.
Annie had one, thought. " URANUS?!" she yelled. " HOW DID YOU GET THERE SO FAST?!"
" my turbo boosters."
"T.. turbo boosters?!" Annie exclaimed incredulously.
" Mhm."
Annie sighed. " Emma, listen. As soon as you see Neptune get back here."
" Okay "
Annie blinked. " Well that went smoothy."
" Just as soon as I visit the bright yellow thing."
" B.. bright yellow thing?" Mia whispered.
" Yeah. The one which is close to Mercury."
" Th... That's the SUN!"
" Oh?"
" ' Oh'?! That's all you have to say?!"
" I thought it was called " the yellow thing.""
Mia groaned. " You're impossible."
" That's why you love me." Emma said brightly.
" True."
Annie's face was in her hands. She was motionless, not speaking.
But now she did.
" Emma. Listen. Carefully. Get. Back. Here. Right. Now."
The reception cut. " So-wh-tha-an-h-ip-hi-ra-"
" Emma? Emma!"
" Sorry, the reception cut. What was that?"
Annie sighed. " Really?"
" Wh-"
Suddenly, the other end went dead.
" Emma?!" Annie yelled
" I understood five of those words."
Annie sighed dramatically. " That's it. She's lost at space. She'll never see us again. Or Morro and Chico."
Mia blinked at Annie. " uh.... Pardon?"
" You heard me right. Don't tell me your hearing aid is flickering."
Mia stared at her. " Annie. I don't have a hearing aid. You're mistaking me for that girl at the market that looks like me."
" Oh. You don't?"
Mia groaned. " Annie, how are we gonna get Emma back on?"
Annie shrugged. " I don't know."
Mia stared at her. " I expected more of your help."
Suddenly, Mia's phone rang.
Emma.
Without hesitation Mia picked up.
" Em-"
" You guys won't believe it!" Emma exclaimed happily. " The thing you call a sin is really hot!"
" Yeah, Emma we know that." Mia said uncertainly. " Why?"
" Because I'm one meter away from it!"
Annie and Mia stared at the screen. " What?!"
" Yeah. And Annie, you need to put sunscreen in here. It's making me tan."
Mia slapped her head. Annie went around in circles. " This is bad...." She muttered.
Mia paced back and forth while Annie continued to spin in panicked circles.
"Annie, we need a plan," Mia said, stopping suddenly. "We can't just let Emma drift closer to the sun!"
Annie stopped too, but her eyes were still wide with disbelief. "How is she even *
alive near the sun?!"
Mia shrugged. "The van's probably super reinforced thanks to all your mods, but... not even that can survive for long near the sun."
Just then, Mia's phone buzzed again. She grabbed it, not wasting a second. "Emma!"
"Hey, Mia! Guess what? I found some weird purple rocks! They’re super shiny!"
Mia groaned. "Emma, forget the rocks! You're literally a meter from the sun! Get out of there!"
"Aw, but the rocks... I could sketch them."
"No! Forget the sketches! Drive back to Earth before you melt!"
There was silence on the other end of the phone.
"Emma?"
"Fine... I'll come back. But next time, I'm going to Saturn!"
Annie blinked. "S-Saturn?"
Mia sighed, exhausted. "Just get back here first, please. We'll... we'll talk about Saturn later."
They heard the sound of the engine revving over the phone, and soon Emma's voice came through again, cheerful as ever. "Okay! Heading back. See you guys soon!"
Mia looked at Annie, shaking her head. "How does she do this stuff?"
Annie shrugged, utterly defeated. "At least we got her to turn around before she touched the sun."
"Yeah," Mia muttered. "But I bet she’s already planning her next adventure."
Blackie meowed from Mia's shoulder. "That's what you get for having such... interesting friends."
Mia sighed, giving the cat an amused look. "Tell me about it."
When Emma didn't come down, the girls got suspicious.
Mia stared at the tracker app on her phone, her face frozen in disbelief. "Annie," she said slowly, "you're not going to like this."
Annie, already pale from the stress, gave Mia a worried look. "What now?"
Mia held up her phone, showing Emma's location. "She's... she's on Saturn. And apparently... she's biking?"
Annie blinked. "Biking?" she echoed weakly.
Mia nodded. "Yeah. Look at the tracker." She zoomed in on the app. "She somehow parked the van, got out, and now she's biking around Saturn's rings like it's a leisurely afternoon ride."
Annie's face turned white as a sheet, and she staggered, nearly fainting.
"Annie!" Mia rushed to catch her before she could hit the ground. "Breathe! Come on, stay with me!"
Annie took a few shallow breaths, shaking her head. "This... this can't be real. It’s like something out of a sci-fi movie."
Mia sighed, steadying her friend. "I know. But it’s Emma. I don't think anything surprises me anymore."
Just then, Mia's phone rang again. She didn't even need to check the caller ID. "Emma!" she answered, exasperated. "Are you biking on Saturn?!"
"Yup!" Emma replied cheerfully, as if it were the most normal thing in the world. "You guys wouldn’t believe the view up here! The rings are so smooth, and the wind... well, it’s non-existent, but the vibe is great!"
Mia groaned. "Emma, please come back. You're biking on Saturn. SATURN! Do you realize how insane that is?"
"Eh, it's fine," Emma responded casually. "Besides, I've almost finished sketching the rings. I’ll head back soon."
"Not soon, Emma. Now!" Mia insisted.
Annie, finally regaining her composure, grabbed the phone. "Emma, please. We’re begging you. Get back to Earth. We can't keep up with you at this rate!"
There was a pause on the other end. "Alright, alright. I'll head back. But I really wanted to see Uranus again..."
Mia facepalmed, muttering under her breath. "I swear, she’s going to give me a heart attack one day."
As they waited, Mia refreshed the tracker over and over, watching as Emma slowly made her way back toward Earth.
Annie sat on the ground, looking dazed. "If she ever does this again... I’m going to need therapy."
Mia nodded. "Yeah, me too." Then she glanced at her phone one more time and muttered, "Please let this be the last time we have to rescue Emma from space."
As Mia refreshed the tracker for what felt like the hundredth time, Blackie, sitting comfortably on her shoulder, glanced at the screen. The black cat let out a nonchalant, "Eh. Nope. It’s not."
Mia’s brow furrowed. "What do you mean, 'it’s not'?"
Before Blackie could answer, Annie screamed, "WHAT?!"
Mia quickly looked at the screen, her eyes widening in disbelief. Emma’s tracker had moved again. This time, it was showing she was... on Venus.
"Venus?!" Mia yelped. "How did she get there?!"
Before they could even process it, Mia's phone rang again. Emma’s voice came through loud and clear, "Hey, you guys would definitely need sunscreen here."
Mia and Annie looked at each other in shock. "Wait... what?!" Mia shouted into the phone. "Emma, are you sunbathing on Venus?!"
Emma's cheerful voice confirmed their worst fear. "Yup! Thought I'd take a little break. It’s hot, but a good tan is worth it!"
Mia's face twisted in horror. "Emma, Venus is literally hellishly hot! How are you even surviving out there?!"
"Oh, don't worry," Emma replied casually. "I packed some extra-strong sunscreen."
Annie fainted again.
Until next time....
Lol don't worry I'll publish the next part.
