Being Seen
Me and Emma
Emma is the black haired one
One day Kai was walking around the market, finding the food Zane had asked him for on his long list
" Okay.... Pears, apples, oranges, lemon....s?" He looked confused. Why would Zane need lemons?!
Before he could even think of a REASONABLE explanation, he heard voices.
Talking.
About the ninja
He set his basket down and jumped on the roof of a nearby building.
On the other side of the building, there were kids.
" Kai's so cool. Like, have you seen how he can shoot fire? Amazing!" One gushed.
" And his sister? I mean, who else would be daring enough to be on a team full of boys?!" Another pointed out.
" And Cole. So earthy."
" Zane is so cool- literally!"
" And Lloyd? He's the youngest, yet he is the leader!"
" And Mia?! Oh. My. Goodness! She's so cool! I mean, who else can control FOUR elemental powers?!"
Kai waited for Jay's compliment.
Except it never came
" Guys?" Kai called from the roof. " Aren't you forgetting someone?"
The kids squinted as they looked up. " No.....?"
" My brother? Jay?"
The kids stared at him. " Who?"
Kai sighed. " The blue ninja?"
" There's a blue ninja?!" The first one asked. " What does he do, shoot water?"
The others Snickered. Kai sighed.
But at least Jay wasn't there.
Or so he thought.
When he got home, Cole and Lloyd helped him with the groceries. Zane immediately went to start cooking. Nya was sparring.
But the Walker siblings were nowhere to be seen.
" Hey, Lloyd?* Kai asked. * Where's my brother? And sister?"
Lloyd pointed to Jay's room.
" Thanks."
He walked, and as he drew closer, he could make out the faint sound of sobs.
And consoling.
" Come on Jay! Cheer up!" Mia said as Kai cracked the door open. " Just because a bunch of kids don't know who you are doesn't mean you don't exist!"
Jay was lying down face first on his bed in his pillow. He mumbled something, but neither siblings could make out.
" Mia?" Kai asked as she stepped in. " What happened?"
Mia looked up, her expression a mix of frustration and sympathy. She was sitting beside Jay, gently rubbing his back as he buried his face in the pillow. "He overheard something, Kai," she said, her voice low. "Some kids in the market were talking about the ninja... but they didn't know who Jay was."
Kai sighed. " I was there."
Mia crossed her legs. " Tell me more."
Kai’s eyes widened. "They didn’t know about Jay! The literal one of the original ninja! And I'm like, 'How could they not' —" He stopped, glancing at Jay, whose muffled sobbing had quieted.
Kai sighed. "They knew about you, me, Nya, Lloyd, even Zane and Cole... but when it came to Jay, they didn’t even recognize him." He shook her head. "They thought he was some random guy. They didn’t even remember the Blue Ninja."
Mia pat her brother on the back. " Blue ninja or gold ninja, we're all on the same team. You can't just.... Pick and choose your favorite!*
Kai frowned, his heart sinking as he looked at his brother. He knew Jay had always been sensitive about feeling like the odd one out. Even though they were all a team, sometimes Jay’s personality and quirks made him feel like he wasn’t taken seriously. And now this? Kai knelt beside the bed, putting a hand on Jay's shoulder.
"Jay, come on," Kai said softly. "You know you're just as important as the rest of us. You’re the one who keeps us laughing, keeps our spirits up even in the worst situations. You’re the Lightning Ninja, the one who’s always there when things get tough."
Jay groaned into his pillow, his voice muffled but clear enough. "But they don't know that, Kai. They don't even know who I am." His voice cracked as he sat up, wiping his eyes. "I’m supposed to be a hero, but how can I be one if no one even remembers me?"
Mia scooted closer, putting an arm around him. "Jay, you don’t need random kids to validate you. You’ve saved Ninjago more times than we can count! You’re the one who fought with us through everything—the Serpentine, the Overlord, the Djinn, everything. You’re a hero, whether people realize it or not."
Jay sniffled, his eyes still red from crying. "It’s just… it feels like I don’t matter sometimes, you know? Like, all the cool stuff you guys do gets noticed. But me? I’m just the comic relief, the guy who cracks jokes while everyone else is being epic."
Kai exchanged a glance with Mia before turning back to Jay. "You matter more than you know, Jay. And it’s not just because you’re funny—though we all love that about you. You’re smart, quick on your feet, and your heart is in everything you do. Without you, we wouldn’t be the team we are."
Mia nodded. "And besides, those kids clearly don’t know what they’re talking about. They probably haven’t seen all the awesome things you’ve done—like when you saved Ninjago City from the Djinn by risking everything. Or how you came up with the plan to beat the Sky Pirates."
Then she shuddered, and Jay's hand went up to her hair and he pat it.
Kai, though lost about who the heck were shy pirates, agreed. " Yeah! You've done so many good things for Ninjago. Just because some kid doesn't know it doesn't mean it matters to you."
Mia picked up. " You even went into PRINE EMPIRE! Your literal favorite game!"
Jay blinked, some of the sadness fading from his face. "Yeah, I guess that was kinda cool," he muttered.
Kai grinned, giving his brother a light punch on the arm. "More than cool, bro. You’re one of the best. Don’t let a few clueless kids make you forget that."
Jay sat up straighter, wiping the last of the tears from his eyes. "Thanks, guys," he said softly. "I guess I needed to hear that."
Mia smiled, giving him a playful nudge. "Hey, if anyone needs reminding of how awesome they are, it’s you. You’re the best Blue Ninja we’ve got. And the only Blue Ninja."
Jay chuckled, a faint smile forming on his face. "Well, when you put it that way..."
Kai stood up, crossing his arms and smiling down at Jay. "Now, come on. We’ve got dinner cooking, and you know how Zane gets when we’re late to the table. He might decide to whip up something with those random lemons if we don’t get in there soon."
Jay’s grin widened. "Lemons? Really? I knew Zane was up to something."
"Don’t ask," Kai said with a laugh as he helped Jay to his feet. "Let’s just eat before he turns dinner into a science experiment."
Mia hopped up and grabbed Jay's other hand. "And after dinner? Movie night. Your pick."
Jay’s eyes lit up at the suggestion. "Now that I can get behind." He looked at his siblings, his heart feeling a little lighter. Maybe not everyone in Ninjago knew who he was—but the people who mattered did. And that was more than enough.
I want everyone here to know, even IF people don't see you or don't acknowledge you, that doesn't define who you are! Take me, for example. For one year in primary school/ elementary school, the kids would ignore me and pretend I wasn't even alive!
But now look at me! You guys see me ( not literally but .... Oh you get the point). My friends see me.
So even if a bunch of losers don't see you, ignore them! Think about all your friends!
And just remember, you have everyone here on this amazing platform to help bring your spirits up.
.... That sounded like a speech.
Oh wait.... AIEEEEEEEEEEE I GAVE A SPEECH IM SO BAD AT SPEECHES AIRHDJDHDNSHEIEUSYSMRS MY INWUDUNWHDNDURKEGR
