Baking at midnight
DumbassWriter17 don't worry I remember the wedding
I'm still perfecting the whole thing
Don't worry you'll see it
Before the year ends I hope
If I'm not too busy
And if ideas stop coming
For once I need same ideas and none new
Lol
That's odd
Anyway
" Coooooooole."
" Mmmmmm."
" Coooooooole."
" What?"
" Co-"
" WHAT?!" Cole barked as he sat up.
Mia grinned. " Good. You're awake.
Cole could barely see her in the dark. " Mia, what time is it?"
" Three."
" THREE?!" he screeched.
Mia nodded. " Mhm! Come on, let's go patrol the night!"
But Cole was already asleep again.
Mia sighed. Being seven and waking up at three wasn't really helpful.
Ah well. Might as well be useful.
She could bake some bread!
****
Mia hummed to herself as she kneaded the dough, the rhythmic motions calming her down as she worked. She was on a mission-baking the perfect loaf of bread while the house was still quiet. The smell of fresh dough filled the kitchen, and Mia's eyes sparkled with excitement. It was a secret project, and she wasn't going to let anyone ruin it.
Suddenly, the soft patter of footsteps echoed from the hallway. Mia paused, her hand still on the dough.
"What's going on?" a groggy voice asked.
Mia glanced over her shoulder to see Kai, still half-asleep and rubbing his eyes. His hair was a mess, and his pajamas were wrinkled from his impromptu nap.
"I'm baking bread!" Mia said brightly, as though it were the most normal thing to be doing at 3 AM.
Kai blinked at her, clearly not registering the situation just yet. "Bread?" he repeated slowly, like the word itself had no meaning at that hour.
"Uh-huh! Want to help?" Mia asked, grinning.
Kai yawned. "Help with bread... at 3 AM?" He scratched his head, still trying to shake off the sleepiness. "Why are you awake? And more importantly, why are you awake baking?"
Mia gave him a serious look. "Well, it's important. If the bread isn't perfect, the world will... um... the world will be sad!" she exclaimed dramatically, as though that made total sense.
Kai rubbed his eyes again. "Mia, it's three in the morning. It's too early for... baking bread."
"But I can't sleep, so why not?" Mia replied, already spreading the dough on the counter to start shaping it. "Besides, you've got nothing better to do."
Kai sighed, finally giving in. "Fine, fine, I'll help. But only because you're apparently going to bake the whole world's happiness into that bread."
"Exactly!" Mia said with a nod.
She handed him a small bowl of flour. "You can sprinkle the flour on the counter so the dough doesn't stick!"
Kai, still not fully awake, took the flour and scattered it across the counter with little care, some of it falling onto the floor. He glanced over at Mia. "You're really committed to this, huh?"
Mia smiled proudly. "Of course! Baking is art."
Kai chuckled softly, a faint smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "Well, then let's make some good art. I've never baked at 3 AM before. Should be interesting."
They worked together in silence for a while, the sound of dough being kneaded and the occasional yawn from Kai filling the air. Eventually, they slid the loaf into the oven, and Mia sat back, grinning with satisfaction.
"That's gonna be the best bread ever," she said with a proud nod.
Kai looked at the clock on the wall. "We'll see. I hope you're right, Mia. Otherwise, I might never sleep again."
Mia winked. "Then I'll bake you some cookies tomorrow to make up for it."
Kai laughed softly, shaking his head. "Deal."
As the scent of baking bread began to fill the house, the two of them sat back and waited. For once, Mia didn't mind the late night. It was an adventure, and she was determined to make it count.
" Coooooooole."
" Mia if it's you-"
" Fine. I'll leave."
Cole groaned and yawned, drifting to sleep again.
****
" You're baking.... Cupcake. At three in the morning. Again?!" Kai yawned as he sat on the chair, watching his sister in law.
Mia looked up from the counter, where she was carefully frosting a batch of freshly baked cupcakes. The kitchen was warm with the scent of vanilla and chocolate, but it was definitely not the kind of time for anyone to be awake, much less baking.
"Yep!" Mia grinned brightly, holding up a perfectly decorated cupcake. "Do you want one? I made extra. They're for the world, of course."
Kai, still half-asleep and rubbing his eyes, stared at her, his face a mix of disbelief and amusement. "Mia, it's 3 AM. The world's not going to collapse if you don't bake cupcakes right now."
Mia giggled, picking up a small sprinkle container and shaking it over the top of one cupcake. "But if I don't bake them, the world will be sad," she said, mimicking her earlier dramatic tone. "And I can't let that happen."
Kai sighed, pulling his chair closer to the counter, his tired eyes narrowing as he took in the sight of her work. "You're something else, Mia. Only you would be this determined to bake at this hour."
She shrugged, not at all fazed. "What can I say? Baking's my passion. Plus, I can't sleep when I've got a project in mind."
Kai rubbed his temples. "I swear, you're more energetic at 3 AM than I am in the middle of the day."
Mia laughed again and slid a cupcake in front of him. "Here, try one. It might wake you up!"
Kai took a cautious bite. "Mmm," he muttered, chewing slowly. "Okay, I'll admit... this is really good. But I still don't get how you can bake this much at 3 AM."
"Simple," Mia said, taking another cupcake for herself. "Baking is life. And I was bored."
Kai shook his head, a small smile finally breaking through. "You're a mess, but you're my mess."
Mia grinned, then leaned closer, her voice turning serious. "You know, if you ever need an emergency baker in the middle of the night, I'm your girl."
"I'll keep that in mind," Kai chuckled, shaking his head. "But please, next time, try to make it during the day, alright?"
Mia nodded with exaggerated solemnity. "I'll consider it... but only if the world promises to be extra sad if I don't bake at 3 AM again."
"Deal," Kai said, still smiling. "Now, let's get some sleep, okay? You've got a whole day ahead of you."
Mia shook her head, not willing to give in. "Sleep is overrated. Let's stay up all night!"
Kai looked at her, clearly not amused. "I'll pass. But you're on your own for the night shift."
With a dramatic sigh, Mia pulled out a tray of cookies from the oven. "Fine. I'll make cookies then. But I'm definitely not sleeping."
"Good luck with that," Kai murmured, his eyes already starting to droop as he slid back in his chair.
Mia smiled at the sight of her brother-in-law, already on the edge of sleep again. She didn't mind though. The cupcakes would be there when he woke up. After all, she was never in a rush.
" So.... Lemma get this straight." Jay yawned.
Mia blinked owlishly as she piped the choux. " Sure."
" You're baking at three in the morning."
" I've been doing it for a few days. Ash Kai."
" Is that where those cupcakes and bread came from?"
" Mhm. Anyway, I also need to make macarons donuts a-"
" Easy Wojira easy."
Mia glanced at Jay. " Sleep. You need it."
" So do you!" Jay exclaimed.
Mia shook her head. " I will. Later. Go. Love you."
Jay kisses her head and waved as he retreated to his room.
Mia sighed and smiled. Bake bake bake.
Kai shuffled into the kitchen, rubbing his eyes and still clearly half asleep. "Mia, I don't know how you do it, but you're gonna be the death of us all," he muttered, looking at the pile of pastries already on the counter. "And it's not even dawn yet."
Mia paused for a moment, taking a deep breath before piping another line of choux batter onto the baking sheet. "You're just jealous because I can bake and keep the energy up."
"You've been baking non-stop for days," Kai pointed out, trying to make sense of the small mountain of dough and batter. "Don't you ever sleep?"
Mia grinned and shook her head. "Nah. I get sleepy sometimes, but if I don't bake, I get restless. Plus, I've got a deadline! I need to get all these pastries ready by... uh... tomorrow morning, I guess?"
"Tomorrow morning?!" Kai's eyes widened. "Mia, that's insane!"
Just as he spoke, Master Wu entered the kitchen, his usual calm demeanor a stark contrast to the chaos around him. He looked at the counter, then at the half-empty, bleary-eyed Kai, and finally at Mia, who was unphased as she whisked the macarons together.
"Master Wu!" Mia greeted cheerfully, as if it wasn't the middle of the night. "Want to try some of my macarons? I've got vanilla, chocolate, and pistachio."
Wu raised an eyebrow. "Mia, do you ever stop? It's three in the morning. And what is all this?" He gestured at the various treats, the batter-filled bowls, and the mess Mia had created in her baking frenzy.
"I've already made the batter," Mia explained matter-of-factly, not looking up from her work. "You can't waste good batter! That's just a crime. So, I'm making everything tonight. Gotta keep the flow going. No sleep until it's all done!"
"You're pushing yourself too hard," Wu said gently, his tone shifting into the familiar voice of reason. "Why don't you take a break and sleep like everyone else? One pastry at a time, Mia."
"Sleep's for the weak," Mia retorted, her eyes twinkling with mischief as she piped another round of choux. "I'm not normal like you guys."
"Well, that's certainly true," Wu muttered, his lips twitching into a rare smile. "But still, consider this: tomorrow will come whether you're ready or not. Maybe just take a break?"
"Nooooo!" Mia laughed, shaking her head. "What will I do in my free time? I'll just be... bored!"
"Sounds like you need a nap," Kai said, throwing up his hands in frustration. "I'm going back to bed. If you're going to keep baking, at least keep it down!"
Mia looked over at Kai, grinning. "Okay, okay. I'll try to keep it quiet, but no promises!"
Wu sighed, his eyes softening. "You'll run yourself ragged, Mia."
"That's the plan!" Mia replied brightly, picking up a donut ring from the counter and placing it in the fryer. "Besides, what else am I supposed to do at three AM when I can't sleep? Bake, obviously!"
Kai and Wu both exchanged a knowing look, but Mia was already too focused on the delicate task of making her macarons perfect.
"Fine," Wu said finally, shaking his head. "But if you drop a macaron in the middle of the night, don't wake me up."
"Deal!" Mia answered, grinning as she stacked the fresh, fluffy donuts onto a plate.
As Master Wu and Kai both quietly exited the kitchen, Mia stood alone, surrounded by her work, still completely unfazed by the late hour. She'd had her fun, and the pastries were turning out perfectly. Life at 3 AM was just a little different for her, but it was all part of the process. She wasn't normal, but to her, that was perfectly fine.
The next night, Mia was once again in the kitchen, this time preparing a large pie, the aroma of cinnamon and apples already filling the room. She hummed a little tune as she expertly rolled out the dough, oblivious to the clock ticking past midnight.
Jay, groggy and rubbing his eyes, wandered into the kitchen, drawn by the unmistakable scent of pie. He stopped in the doorway, blinking a few times, his expression a mix of surprise and concern.
"Really?" he asked, crossing his arms, his voice a little more awake than he intended. "Pie this time?"
Mia looked up, a smile spreading across her face as she worked the crust into the pie dish. "What can I say? I've been inspired," she said with a grin, clearly unfazed. "You know, cinnamon apple pie just seemed like the right choice tonight."
Jay sighed, walking further into the kitchen, clearly trying to make sense of the situation. "Mia, it's... midnight. Don't you ever sleep?"
Mia, still focused on her pie, shrugged nonchalantly. "I slept earlier, Jay. Now I'm just making sure I get my baking in before the sun comes up."
Jay raised an eyebrow. "You're seriously making pies again? Last night it was donuts, the night before it was cupcakes, and don't get me started on the bread. What's next? A full-course meal at 3 AM?"
Mia paused for a moment, then grinned mischievously. "Well... I've been thinking about trying lasagna next time."
"Lasagna? At three in the morning?!" Jay's eyes widened, disbelief in his tone.
"Why not?" Mia responded with a shrug, then carefully set the pie in the oven. "Besides, I get bored, and I like keeping myself busy."
Jay rubbed his forehead, trying to keep the frustration from seeping in. "You're gonna make yourself sick if you keep going like this. Sleep is important, Mia."
"Eh," Mia waved him off casually, "I'm fine. Anyway, pie first, nap later." She popped the oven door closed and turned to Jay with a grin. "You want to help me with the pie crust design? I was thinking of doing a little flower pattern on top."
Jay opened his mouth to argue but then stopped himself. He knew it wouldn't make a difference. Mia had her own rhythm, and once she was in baking mode, there was no stopping her.
"Fine," he said, throwing up his hands in mock defeat. "But if we end up making lasagna at 3 AM, I'm locking you out of the kitchen."
Mia chuckled, moving to grab a pastry cutter. "Deal. Now, help me make this pie look fancy!"
As Jay reluctantly joined her at the counter, Mia's lighthearted energy seemed to fill the room. No matter the hour, it was clear that this was just how she worked-endless energy, no sleep, and a never-ending stream of baked goods to share.
Kai walked into the kitchen, his eyes half-lidded from just waking up. He rubbed his forehead, clearly still fighting off the remnants of sleep. He reached for a glass to get some water, but when he saw the scene unfolding before him, he froze mid-movement.
Mia was happily humming as she meticulously worked on pie crust, while Jay was grumbling in the corner, clearly roped into helping her with the design. The smell of freshly baked goods filled the kitchen, mixing with the midnight air.
Kai blinked a few times, still processing what he was seeing. Finally, he opened his mouth, his voice slow and deliberate as he asked, "What. Is. Going. On?"
Mia, who had been so absorbed in her task, looked up at him and gave a bright, innocent smile. "Oh, hi, Kai! I'm just making some pie," she said, as if it were the most normal thing in the world. "You want a slice?"
Kai stared at her for a moment, then glanced around at the kitchen, which was littered with baking supplies, mixing bowls, and-he noticed-plates of cake and cookies. "Mia, it's 3 AM. Why are you baking again?"
Mia shrugged nonchalantly, not skipping a beat as she sliced the dough. "Why not? I was bored, and I had some extra apples lying around. Plus, Jay's helping now, so it's a team effort."
Jay, who had been silently cutting out intricate designs in the pie crust, looked up at Kai with an exasperated look. "I don't know how to explain it, Kai. She does this every night."
" I know." Kai sighed. " Have you tried-"
" Yep. I've tried."
Kai pinched the bridge of his nose, a deep sigh escaping his lips. "Mia, do you realize that you never sleep? You're running on zero hours of rest and all sugar!"
Mia looked at him, her expression thoughtful for a second before she grinned. "Yeah, but I'm having fun, and I feel great!" she chirped. "I'll sleep later. Besides, this pie's gonna be so good."
"Great, so now we're adding pie to the list of midnight snacks..." Kai muttered, walking over to the fridge to grab his water. "Is there anything in here that doesn't have sugar in it?"
Mia raised an eyebrow, clearly unphased by his exhaustion. "Why, you want a salad?"
Kai let out a long, exaggerated sigh. "I'd settle for a nap."
Jay chuckled softly as he leaned against the counter, now fully awake from the chaos. "Good luck with that. Mia's been on a baking spree for the past week. At this rate, we might have a full bakery by morning."
"Yup!" Mia chimed in. "But first, pie!"
Kai shook his head, a small smile tugging at the corner of his lips despite himself. "I'm too tired for this."
"Don't worry, I'll send you to bed soon!" Mia promised cheerfully, tossing some cinnamon onto the pie's filling.
Kai shot Jay a look, but Jay only shrugged, knowing there was no stopping Mia once she'd set her mind to something. Kai sighed again, taking his water and shaking his head in disbelief. "At least save the lasagna for tomorrow night..."
"Deal!" Mia said brightly, her hands already moving to prepare another batch of batter. Kai was already retreating to his room, leaving her to her nocturnal baking.
Jay grinned at her as he finished the pie design. "I think we'll be eating this for breakfast tomorrow."
Mia grinned back, satisfied. "As long as they're happy, right?"
