The pain

Jay sniffed as he held a picture of him and Mia. How he missed her.

A few weeks ago, Jay had woken up from his 3 month old coma. He was surprised, and when asked for Mia, he was told she merged to let him live.

Now, she was who knows where, maybe having the time of her life.

Jay, on the other hand, was depressed. He didn't move, talk, or even eat.

He just stayed in that one spot, hoping time would pass.

He just wanted his sister back.

As he sat there, the photo held tightly against his chest, Jay whispered to himself, “I miss you, Mia. I miss you so much. I just want you back.” The words were barely more than a soft murmur, but they carried the weight of his longing and heartache.

Kai approached Jay slowly, taking a seat next to him on the edge of the bed. Jay remained motionless, his gaze fixed on the photo in his hands. Kai's voice was gentle but firm. "Hey, Jay. You need to eat something."

Jay barely turned his head, his voice hollow. "What's the point? Nothing matters anymore."

Kai sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Listen, if you eat, if you take care of yourself, we can use the bounty to find Mia. We need you to be strong for that."

Jay’s eyes flickered briefly towards Kai, the weight of his words sinking in. The thought of doing something tangible to help find Mia was the only spark of hope Jay had left. He nodded faintly, though his body remained rigid.

Just then, Nya entered the room, her expression a mix of concern and sympathy. "Oh, Jay," she said softly, her eyes searching his face. The sight of Jay, so broken and lost, tugged at her heartstrings.

She walked over to them, kneeling beside Jay and placing a comforting hand on his shoulder. "We're all here for you," she said gently. "We want to help you, and we want to find Mia too. But we need you to take care of yourself first."

Jay's eyes finally met Nya’s, the overwhelming sadness in them speaking volumes. For the first time in a long while, he felt a flicker of something other than despair—perhaps a sliver of hope that maybe, just maybe, he could start taking steps towards finding Mia and healing himself.

Kai stood up, giving Jay a reassuring nod. "We’ll start working on it right away. But you need to be strong for us, okay? We can’t do this without you."

Jay took a deep breath, his resolve slowly returning. He looked at Nya and Kai, their support giving him the strength he had been lacking. "Alright," he said quietly. "I’ll try."

As Nya prepared a simple meal, Kai went over the details of their plan to search for Mia. The room, though still heavy with sadness, began to fill with a sense of determination. Jay knew it would be a long road, but with Kai and Nya by his side, he felt a renewed sense of purpose.

Together, they would find Mia.

* Few hours later*

As Jay stood at the railing, staring out into the horizon with a distant look in his eyes, Cole approached Kai quietly. The weight of their situation was heavy on both of them, and the sense of hopelessness was almost palpable.

Cole leaned in and whispered, "Why are we doing this? We’ve tried this other times. It never works."

Kai's gaze remained fixed on Jay, his expression a mix of concern and resolve. He sighed and finally spoke, "It's the only way we can get him to eat and start taking care of himself. Jay’s been in a dark place for too long. He needs to believe that there’s still something worth fighting for."

Cole nodded, understanding the gravity of Kai's words. "So this is just another attempt to give him a reason to keep going?"

"Exactly," Kai replied. "If we can give him even a sliver of hope, a reason to stay strong, then it’s worth it. He needs to feel like there’s something he can do, something he can control. And if it means trying again, then that’s what we’ll do."

Cole glanced back at Jay, who continued to stand motionless, seemingly lost in thought. "I hope it works this time."

Kai put a reassuring hand on Cole's shoulder. "So do I. We all do. But right now, we need to be there for him, support him, and keep pushing forward. It’s the only way we’ll get through this."

Cole nodded, his own worry softened by Kai’s determination. Together, they would continue to stand by Jay, hoping that their efforts would eventually lead to finding Mia and restoring hope to their broken family.

Kai and Cole were lost in their own thoughts, their attention focused on Jay, who remained oblivious to the figure that had stealthily approached them. The figure was cloaked in shadows, her presence almost ethereal. With a delicate grace, she moved closer to Jay and leaned on the railing beside him. She put a finger to her lips, signaling for silence.

Jay was deeply immersed in his sorrowful reverie, his gaze fixed on the endless horizon. The soft rustling of the figure’s footsteps was barely perceptible, but she eventually positioned herself next to him.

The girl leaned in closer, her voice gentle and inquisitive. "So, what's Mia like?"

Jay's face softened, and a flood of emotions surged through him. His voice wavered with a mixture of tenderness and longing as he began to speak.

"Mia?" Jay started, his eyes never leaving the horizon. "Mia is... she's the most incredible person I know. She’s strong and fierce, but she has this gentle side that she shows only to those she loves. She’s always been so full of energy and spirit. I remember how she would light up a room just by walking in. Her laugh, it's infectious. She makes everything seem brighter, even on the darkest days."

He paused, his gaze dropping to the floor as he tried to hold back tears. "She’s incredibly brave, too. She’s faced so much with such courage. And she’s so kind-hearted, always putting others before herself. Even when she’s angry or upset, there's this deep love in her eyes that you just can't ignore."

Curious and slightly annoyed, Jay asked,  "Who are you, anyway?"

The figure shifted, and as Jay turned to see who was speaking, he was met with a sight that took his breath away. The figure was none other than Mia, his little sister, looking older and wiser than he remembered, but unmistakably her.

His eyes widened in shock and disbelief. "Oh my goodness! Mia!"

Mia's eyes sparkled with a mixture of mischief and warmth. She smiled softly, her presence lighting up the dark space around them. Jay's heart raced as he took in her familiar features, her eyes that had been absent for so long. He reached out tentatively, as if afraid she might disappear.

Jay looked back at Mia, his expression a mix of awe and deep affection. "I missed you so much."

Mia’s eyes glistened, and she took Jay's hand in hers. "I’m here now, Jay."

Jay’s eyes widened, and he clutched her hand tightly. "I can't believe it's really you. I thought... I thought I’d never see you again."

Mia's smile widened. "You don’t have to worry anymore. I’m here."

Kai and Cole, who had been silently observing the reunion, exchanged relieved glances. Kai’s eyes were filled with tears of joy, and Cole gave a supportive nod.

Jay pulled Mia into a heartfelt embrace, his body trembling with emotion. "I’ve missed you so much," he whispered, his voice choked with emotion.

Mia hugged him back, her presence a comforting reminder of hope and love. "I’ve missed you too, Jay."

In that moment, surrounded by the soft hues of the setting sun, the pain of their separation seemed to dissolve, replaced by the warmth of their reunion. The world around them felt a little brighter, as if the reunion had rekindled a spark of hope in their hearts.

Okay, now the reason you all are here

Hate you.

A lot.

😭😭😭😭😭

Anyway

* Ahem*

Just as Kai was about the attempt Rising Dragon, and alarm went off.

" Oh, sorry. I have to go now. I'll be back quickly." He hurried up the stairs and to the house.

Egalt huffed. " Why does he do that everyday?"

Nya sighed and looked down. " We have a sister. A sister in law. Who's bother went missing in the merge. She became all types of depressed. So, everyday, Kai feeds her food and tries to give her hope, but, so far, it doesn't work. Even her behavior has changed."

Rontu looked intrigued. " Really?" She asked.

Lloyd nodded. " Yeah. Before, she was all fierce. Now, she's shy and withdrawn."

Rontu nodded, but Egalt had one small request.

".. then he asked, ' Could you bring her out so I may meet her?'"

Kai looked up from the bowl of food. " What?!" He exclaimed. " How are we supposed to pull that off?"

Nya shrugged. " I don't know. Coax her or something."

Kai sighed. " Okay, I'll try."

Nya nodded and walked out the room and down the hall, outside.

" So?" Egalt asked.

" Kai's gonna coax her to come out."

Sure enough, five minutes later, a timid girl stood behind Kai, holding his hand.

" Are you sure these dragons can be trusted?" She asked. " A dragon -"

" Knocked Jay away. Yes, Mia, we all know. And yes, they can be trusted."

Mia gulped. " Kai, I haven't seen any other dragons but the ones we live with since-"

" The merge. Yes, Mia."

Outside, Mia stood hesitantly behind Kai, her gaze shifting nervously between the two dragons. The soft breeze rustled her hair, and she clutched Kai’s hand tighter, as if seeking reassurance.

Rontu offered a gentle smile, trying to put Mia at ease. "It’s nice to finally meet you, Mia. We’ve heard a lot about you."

Mia looked up at Kai, who gave her an encouraging nod. She took a deep breath but remained cautious. "Thank you. I’m not really good at... meeting new people."

Egalt, however, was more curious and impatient. "I’d really like to see your elemental powers, if you don’t mind."

Mia’s face flushed with anxiety. She shook her head quickly. "Oh, no. I couldn’t."

Kai frowned, sensing her discomfort. "Mia, it’s okay. They’re just curious. You don’t have to do anything you’re not comfortable with."

Mia turned to Kai, her voice barely above a whisper. "Can I go back inside now?"

Kai’s expression softened, but he shook his head gently. "No, Mia. We’re outside now, and it’s important to try and engage with others. Just for a little while."

Mia’s eyes widened in disbelief. "Seriously? Can’t I just go back in?"

Kai sighed, trying to balance understanding with encouragement. "I know it’s hard, but it’s part of getting better. You need to face these things, even if they’re uncomfortable."

Rontu, seeing the distress in Mia’s eyes, stepped forward with a soothing tone. "You don’t have to show us your powers if you’re not ready. We’re here to support you, not to push you."

Mia hesitated, looking back at Kai, then at Rontu and Egalt. Her shoulders slumped in defeat, but she remained where she was, still holding Kai’s hand tightly.

Rontu’s voice was gentle. "If you’d rather just talk, we’re happy to listen. No pressure."

Mia glanced at Rontu, then at Kai, and finally nodded, albeit reluctantly. "Okay. I guess I can talk."

Kai smiled reassuringly and guided Mia forward, trying to make her as comfortable as possible. Egalt and Rontu exchanged glances, understanding that building trust with Mia would take time and patience.

Mia stood awkwardly before Rontu and Egalt, still gripping Kai’s hand tightly. Her voice wavered as she introduced herself. "I’m Mia. Elemental master of wind. Well, was. I don’t know if I can control—"

Suddenly, a strong gust of wind erupted around her, sending her tumbling backward onto the grass. Mia quickly scrambled to her feet, dusting off her clothes with a mix of frustration and embarrassment.

"Never mind. I can," she said, her voice tinged with irritation. She glared at the wind as if it were a mischievous child. "Lily, you’re annoying!"

Brushing herself off, Mia turned to Kai with a resolute expression. "I’m going back in. Goodbye."

Without waiting for a response, she marched back toward the house, her shoulders squared in determination. Kai watched her go with a mix of concern and understanding, knowing that getting Mia to open up would be a gradual process. Rontu and Egalt exchanged thoughtful looks, recognizing that Mia’s journey to regain her confidence and control was still ongoing.

Lloyd’s eyes softened as he spoke, his voice filled with a mix of nostalgia and admiration. “She can do all these amazing things. But that was with Jay. They were the real heart of our family. Mia, the one who loved us to bits. And Jay, the one who was always about safety.”

Kai glanced over and noticed Mia at the window. She was sitting cross-legged, blowing bubbles and watching them float lazily into the air. Her face held a peaceful, serene expression, and she occasionally waved her hand to guide the bubbles gently.

Kai's lips curled into a fond smile. “Look,” he said to Rontu and Egalt. “She’s meditating with bubbles. That’s something Jay and Mia used to do.”

Just as Kai finished speaking, Mia’s serene moment took a sudden turn. With a burst of energy, she began waving her hands more energetically, creating a small whirlwind of bubbles that floated around her. The calm meditation quickly turned into a playful contest of sorts, with Mia laughing as she chased and popped the bubbles, her earlier seriousness completely replaced by joyful exuberance.

Kai chuckled, shaking his head. “And just like that, it’s a contest.”

Mia's joyful play abruptly halted as she stared at a photograph of Jay, which she had taken out of her pocket. Her expression softened, and she hugged the picture tightly to her chest, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears.

A blue butterfly fluttered down and landed gently on her hand. Mia’s sadness momentarily lifted as she gazed at the delicate creature. She leaned in and kissed the butterfly lightly, her affection evident.

Egalt, who was observing from a short distance, wrinkled his nose and muttered, “Ew.” His reaction was a stark contrast to the tender moment, but it went unnoticed by Mia, who was absorbed in her own world.

Kai glanced at the interaction, understanding the depth of Mia’s emotions. He approached her with a gentle smile. “Mia, do you want to come inside now?”

Mia, still holding the photo and the butterfly, nodded slowly. She looked up at Kai, her eyes filled with a mix of hope and sadness. “Yes, please.”

Kai led Mia back inside, guiding her gently. They passed through the hall and entered the main living area, where Egalt, Rontu, and Lloyd awaited.

Egalt glanced at Kai and asked, “So, what’s the plan?”

Kai sighed and responded, “Mia’s not ready yet. She’s been very withdrawn since Jay—”

Suddenly, Egalt interjected, “Someone needs to learn Rising Dragon! It’s a key skill for us!”

Lloyd nodded in agreement. “We need to see it. Rontu, could you demonstrate it for us?”

Rontu stepped forward and performed Rising Dragon, a magnificent display of elemental power that involved a swirling vortex of energy. The dragon’s fiery form danced through the air, illuminating the room with its intensity.

Lloyd watched in awe and then turned to Kai. “Hold on a second. Mia can do that. She’s done it before.”

Kai’s face fell. “Seriously? But she’s been—”

Before he could finish, Lloyd interrupted. “Sorry, Kai, but we need Mia out here again.”

Kai looked confused and concerned. “That’s the problem. She’s in the bathroom right now.”

Kai walked towards the bathroom and knocked softly. “Mia? Can we talk for a moment?”

Inside, Mia’s voice came through, tinged with frustration. “Nope. I’m not that girl anymore. I need Jay.”

Kai’s brow furrowed with worry. “Seriously?! You have lightning in you! You can control lightning!”

Mia’s voice wavered with sadness. “I can’t. I need Jay. I need him to help me.”

Kai’s voice softened as he tried to reason with her. “Mia, you’re stronger than you think. You can do this. You have lightning inside you. Remember how you used to control it?”

Mia’s silence was palpable, and Kai’s plea continued. “Please, come out. We need you, and you need to remember your strength.”

Inside the bathroom, Mia sat against the wall, clutching the photo of Jay tightly. The sound of Kai’s words seemed to penetrate her guarded emotions. Slowly, she opened the door a crack, peeking out with uncertain eyes.

Kai, seeing her hesitance, encouraged, “You’ve always been amazing, Mia. Don’t let your fears keep you from showing how strong you are. Jay would want you to be the best you can be.”

Mia looked up at Kai, a flicker of determination sparking in her eyes. She stepped out, her face still shadowed with sadness but with a glimmer of resolve. “Okay, Kai. I’ll try. But it’s going to be hard.”

Kai smiled encouragingly. “That’s all we ask. Just give it your best.”

As Mia walked back into the court, everyone turned to her.

Mia sighed deeply and mumbled, “Rising Dragon. Uh, let’s see...” She glanced around the yard and called out, “Blackie!”

The sassy black cat ambled over with a lazy stretch. “What, darling?”

Mia looked at him, her brows furrowed in concentration. “What was the start for Rising Dragon again?”

Blackie’s eyes glinted with amusement. “Spinjitzu.”

Mia nodded. “Whatever you say.” With a determined breath, she began the intricate movements. Her elemental energy surged as she spun, forming a swirling dragon of wind and lightning. The dragon soared high and proud, its roar echoing through the sky.

When Mia landed, she brushed off her clothes and announced, “Okay, done. Now I really need to go read.”

Kai raised an eyebrow. “More scrolls of the merge?”

Mia nodded, her tone resolute. “Yep.”

Lloyd interjected, “Can’t you delay that for a while?”

Mia shook her head firmly. “I can’t.”

Lloyd frowned. “Why not?”

Mia’s frustration boiled over as she yelled, “BECAUSE UNLIKE YOU FAT LAZY PEOPLE, I WANT MY BROTHER!”

Kai put a hand on her shoulder, trying to soothe her. “Yep. This is our Mia.” He gave a small, understanding smile, knowing that beneath her frustration and harsh words, her love for Jay was what drove her.

The room fell into a thoughtful silence, as the weight of Mia’s words lingered in the air. The group watched her with a mix of empathy and respect, acknowledging the depth of her commitment and the pain she was trying to overcome.

Blackie, who had been observing Mia’s intense focus, meowed thoughtfully, “Mia, what if you thought Jay... isn’t really Jay? Like he has no memory. Who would be the first—”

Mia’s eyes widened in realization. “Oh. Oh.” Her face hardened with determination. “When I get my hands on those grubby agents, they’re going down.”

Egalit, still watching, said impatiently, “Now can you show us your moves?”

Mia nodded, her resolve firm. “Yep.”

In a dazzling display of skill and fury, Mia launched into a fierce battle demonstration. Her movements were swift and precise, her elemental powers merging into a powerful force. She struck with precision, her wind powers creating gusts that knocked opponents off their feet. In the chaos, she accidentally hurt Egalt, but she showed no sign of remorse.

“Victory,” Mia declared triumphantly. “Lloyd, call the police. We need this criminal away.”

Kai, taken aback, interjected, “He’s not a—”

Mia cut him off with a sharp glare. “DID I STUTTER?!”

Blackie added, trying to mediate, “Mia, this is the dragon.”

Mia’s face twisted in anger and betrayal. “Dragons are what caused my brother to go.” She turned on her heel, her resolve unshaken as she walked away, leaving the room in stunned silence.

Kai and the others exchanged concerned glances, knowing that Mia’s grief and anger were consuming her, and they had to find a way to help her heal and move forward.

Rontu, observing the aftermath of Mia’s battle with a mix of respect and apprehension, turned to the group. Her gaze was sharp, her tone resolute. “That girl is dangerous.”

Lloyd nodded, his expression grim. “We know. She’s always like this. Except... worse. What she did to Egalt is just a warning.”

Egalt’s eyes widened in shock. “What?!”

Kai sighed deeply, his face etched with concern. “Unfortunately, yes. Once, when she felt truly cornered and desperate—let’s just say it was bad. Very bad.”

Rontu looked intrigued but also uneasy. “How bad could it have been?”

Lloyd leaned in, his voice dropping to a low murmur. “Before, even when Mia was fierce, she had some restraint. But now, it’s as if she’s operating on pure rage. She only gets like this in two conditions.”

Kai nodded solemnly. “One of those conditions is when Jay is lost.”

Rontu raised an eyebrow. “And the other?”

Lloyd looked down, reflecting on Mia’s past behavior. “The other is when she feels utterly betrayed or when her trust is shattered. When we... Well, once, she was fighting our master. He betrayed her and she... Got angry."

Kai’s eyes softened with sympathy. “Before all this, Mia was fiercely loyal but kind. She was warm and caring. But now, her anger and grief have turned her into something almost unrecognizable.”

Rontu’s face softened with understanding, though the situation remained daunting. “So, she’s more than just a warrior. She’s a sister who’s been through unimaginable pain.”

Lloyd nodded. “Yes. And right now, her pain is manifesting as something much darker. It’s a constant battle between her longing for her brother and her anger at the world she feels has wronged her.”

The group fell silent, each reflecting on the gravity of Mia’s situation and the challenges ahead in helping her find her way back to the person she used to be.

Blackie, perched on a nearby rock, flicked her tail in contemplation. “I suppose we could try and find Jay,” she mused, her voice tinged with both hope and skepticism.

Kai, standing nearby with a heavy heart, shook his head. “We can’t, Blackie. No matter how much we want to, we can’t.” His tone was firm, laced with the weight of knowledge. “The Blood Moon is coming.”

Blackie sighed, her usual sass subdued by the gravity of the situation. “Fine,” she muttered, clearly frustrated by the limitations they faced. But then her sharp eyes caught sight of Mia in the distance.

Mia, standing at the edge of a high cliff, took a deep breath, the wind whipping her hair around her face. There was a moment of stillness, as if the world held its breath with her. Then, without a second thought, she broke into a sprint, heading straight for the edge. With a graceful leap, she hurled herself off the cliff.

For a heart-stopping second, Mia was in free fall, the ground far below. But then, with a fierce command, she called upon her element. The air around her responded instantly, swirling in a powerful gust that caught her and lifted her high into the sky. Her body soared with the wind, moving as though she was one with it.

From below, Blackie watched with a mix of awe and concern. “She’s really pushing herself,” the cat murmured, her eyes never leaving Mia’s figure as it danced across the sky.

Kai, too, was watching, his heart heavy with the knowledge that they were running out of time. “She’s trying to outrun her pain,” he said quietly. “But no matter how fast she flies, it’s always going to be there, chasing her.”

Mia, high above, let the wind carry her, feeling the rush of air against her skin. Up here, she could almost forget the weight of her sorrow, the void left by Jay’s absence. But even as she soared, there was a part of her that knew Kai was right. No amount of wind could fill the emptiness in her heart.

She would keep flying, though. Keep pushing herself to the edge, because up here, in the sky, she could at least pretend that she was free from the pain, even if only for a little while.
