Poisoned

Thank you to those 1K people who read this! I really appreciate it!!!!! 🥰🩷

Mia was knitting a sweater for her four little balls of joy. She had created a fiery red one, a soothing blue, and a bumble bee pattern.

Now, she was making a pink one, with red stripes. She selected the red yarn and started to knit when she heard some noises - a scream, yells, and silence.

Mia didn't think of it much until she heard hurried shows pittering on the floor. She looked up, and saw a distressed Samantha.

" Uncle Jay just fainted!" She yelled. " And he's blue!"

Mia set her knitting aside and followed her daughter to the kitchen.

Stevie and Fireball were fanning Jay, while Swallowtail was trying to hail him to the couch.

" What happened?!" Mia exclaimed, running to her brother and holding his hand.

" We don't know. One minute he's fine, drinking lemonade, the next he's like this!" Swallowtail said in a small voice.

Mia looked up. " Can you bring me it?" She asked.

Swallowtail nodded and ran to the kitchen, returning with the bottle. Mia took it and read it.

" Huh... This is the exact same we always get." She muttered.

Then, she shook her head. " Everyone, to the car! We have to rush him to the hospital!"

The kids obeyed, running to the elevator and going down to the control room, where Mia helped strap Jay in securely and strap the others in.

" Ready?" Mia asked, revving the engine.

" Ready!" The others yelled.

Mia zoomed out of the garage and swerved a lot.

" Mom, could you consider, oh, I don't know, going on the road?" Samantha squeaked.

" Sorry, no can do."

Swallowtail took her bag off and opened it. " Should I put an ice pack on Uncle Jay?"

Mia nodded. " Yes."

Samantha took her bag out. " And should I put this weird stick with numbers in his mouth?"

" The thermometer? Yes."

Swallowtail gently placed the ice pack on Jay's forehead while Samantha carefully inserted the thermometer under his tongue. The car swerved sharply as Mia took a tight corner, making the kids clutch their seats and brace themselves.

"Aunt Mia, I think we're going to get there in record time," Fireball said, gripping the door handle tightly.

"That's the plan," Mia replied, eyes focused on the road ahead.

As they raced through the city, the thermometer beeped, and Samantha pulled it out, reading the numbers. "It's really high, Mom. Uncle Jay's temperature is 104 degrees."

Mia's face tightened with worry. "Hang in there, Jay. We're almost there."

The hospital finally came into view, and Mia screeched to a halt at the emergency entrance.

Unfortunately, it was closed, due to maintenance.

" What are we gonna do now?" Stevie asked.

Mia sighed. " There's another one in another city. But it's gonna be a while until we reach there."

Mia sighed and turned the car around, heading toward the next nearest hospital. "Alright, everyone, buckle up. It's going to be a bit of a drive."

As they sped out of the parking lot, Swallowtail rummaged through her bag and pulled out a stethoscope. Samantha, Stevie, and Fireball looked at it in surprise.

"What's that doing in here?" Mia asked, glancing in the rearview mirror.

Fireball shrugged. "My dad told me to put one in every car. You never know when you might need it."

Mia rolled her eyes. "I'll drive. You guys examine Uncle Jay."

The kids nodded, determined to help. They put the stethoscope on Jay's chest and listened intently.

"Hey, this sounds like cowboy music!" Stevie exclaimed, putting the earpieces in his ears and starting to hum a Western tune.

"Focus, Stevie!" Samantha scolded. She picked up the otoscope and looked into Jay's ears.

"Whoa, it's like a cave in here!" she said, making Stevie giggle.

Swallowtail grabbed the otoscope next and tried to use it like a lasso. "Yeehaw!" she yelled, twirling it around and accidentally hitting Fireball on the head.

"Ouch! Watch it!" Fireball rubbed his head and then took the stethoscope, pretending it was a microphone. "Testing, testing, one, two, three. Can you hear me, Uncle Jay?"

Jay remained unconscious, his head lolled to the side.

"Guys, this isn't working," Samantha said, exasperated. "We need to do something else."

Stevie picked up the otoscope again and stuck it up Jay's nose. "Does this help?"

Mia glanced back and grimaced. "Definitely not. That's not what it's for, Stevie."

Finally, they found a medical manual in the glove compartment. Samantha opened it up, her eyes widening at the countless medical terms. "Uh, guys, this has a gazillion words I can't pronounce."

Fireball peered over her shoulder. "What does 'cardiopulmonary resuscitation' mean?"

Swallowtail squinted at the page. "I think it's something serious. But I have no idea what these other words are."

They all stared at the manual, scratching their heads. Stevie flipped a few pages and found an illustration of a doctor holding various medical tools.

"Hey, at least the pictures are nice," he said.

Mia took a deep breath, trying to stay calm. "Just do your best to keep Jay comfortable. We'll be there soon."

As they continued their journey, Swallowtail decided to read the manual aloud, mispronouncing almost every word.

"'Anatomy of the humon cardavascular systerm...'" she started, making the others giggle.

Fireball snorted. "Sounds like an alien language."

As they continued their long drive to the next hospital, Fireball grabbed the medical manual and began flipping through the pages with curiosity.

“Hey, guys! I’m a doctor now!” he proclaimed, holding up the book triumphantly.

Stevie leaned over to look. “What’s that thing called a gluetus maximus? There’s even a picture!”

Mia glanced in the rearview mirror and yelped, “Don’t look at that!”

But it was too late. Samantha, Swallowtail, and Stevie were already snickering at the anatomical illustration.

“Why does it look so funny?” Samantha asked, trying to stifle her laughter.

Swallowtail chimed in, “It’s just a drawing, but it looks like someone sat on a pumpkin.”

Fireball, undeterred, continued to flip through the book. “There’s more! Look at this part about the ‘duodenum.’ Sounds like a fancy word for a donut!”

Mia shook her head, focusing on the road. “Guys, this isn’t a joke. We need to make sure Uncle Jay is okay.”

Stevie, still chuckling, said, “Yeah, but it’s kind of fun learning all these weird words. Like ‘phalanx.’ It sounds like a superhero!”

Samantha took the book from Fireball and scanned another page. “And what about ‘medulla oblongata’? That sounds like a spell from Harry Potter!”

They all burst into laughter, despite the seriousness of the situation. Mia couldn’t help but smile at their attempts to lighten the mood.

As they drove on, Fireball decided to give a mock diagnosis. “Alright, according to my expert opinion, Uncle Jay needs some ‘funny bone’ treatment.”

Swallowtail played along, pretending to write on an imaginary clipboard. “Yes, Doctor Fireball. And perhaps some ‘tickle therapy’ too.”

Stevie and Samantha giggled, trying to keep their spirits up. Jay, still unconscious, remained unaware of the comedic chaos around him.

Finally, Mia spotted the sign for the hospital in the next city. “We’re almost there, guys. Hang in there.”

As they pulled into the hospital parking lot, the kids tried to put on serious faces, though they were still fighting back smiles.

With the kids help, Mia burst into the hospital and yelled, " THERE'S A NINJA THAT NEEDS YOUR HELP!"

A staff member, talking to some kids turned. When Mia saw the kids, so gasped.

" Guys? What are you doing here??" Mia asked.

" Yeah, dad. Didn't you have to go somewhere?" Fireball retorted.

Kai scratched his head. " Yeah. So, long story short, we were in town when the hospital said they had a guy that looked like Wu. So we decided to check it out."

" And was is Master?" Samantha asked hopefully.

Nya shook her head.

" But what's with Jay?"

Mia sighed. " He fainted. And he's unconscious."

The hospital staff immediately sprang into action, pushing Jay on a gurney through the emergency doors. Mia and the kids followed closely, hoping for the best.

Fireball, who had been clutching the medical manual, turned to Kai. “Dad, what’s a gluteus maximus?”

Kai looked flustered as he tried to compose himself. “Well, uh, it’s a part of the anatomy… It’s not important right now.”

Mia gave Kai a pointed look. “Yeah, Kai, don’t leave your books in the hands of your son.”

Kai sheepishly nodded, clearly embarrassed. “Sorry about that. I didn’t think it’d become such a… big deal.”

Mia turned back to the staff, who were quickly preparing Jay for examination. “We came from two towns just to get here. Is he going to be okay?”

The lead nurse, a calm and reassuring presence, responded, “We’re going to do everything we can. Please wait in the lobby.”

As they settled into the waiting area, Mia sat down with a sigh. Fireball and the others gathered around, still buzzing from the unusual journey.

Samantha nudged Mia. “So, do you think Uncle Jay will be okay?”

Mia looked up, trying to stay positive. “I’m sure he will be. The doctors here are really good. And they’re fast.”

Kai, still feeling a bit awkward about the manual situation, tried to change the subject. “So, how was the drive?”

Fireball grinned. “Oh, we had quite an adventure. We learned about gluteus maximus, and there was this thing about the medulla oblongata…”

Mia raised an eyebrow. “I hope you didn’t spend too much time on that. I was more concerned about getting Jay to the hospital.”

“Well,” Fireball continued, “we did our best to help. And I’m sure we’ll be able to help Uncle Jay just by being here.”

Mia nodded, appreciating their support. “Thanks, Fireball. It means a lot.”

As they waited, the kids chatted and shared their stories from the drive, trying to keep the mood light. Mia’s thoughts were focused on Jay, hoping he’d be okay and that the doctors would find out what was wrong.

A few hours later, a doctor came by. " He's been poisoned." He said, plainly.

Mia's growled. " WHAT?!"

The doctor looked taken aback by Mia’s sudden outburst, but quickly regained composure. “We’re currently trying to identify the poison and counteract it. Please stay calm.”

Mia, still fuming, pulled out her daggers. “WHO DID THIS?!”

Nya, observing the scene, said with a half-smile, “Where’s the sweet Mia?”

Mia, glaring fiercely, responded, “She’s lost in the deep blue sea. Along with my patience.”

Samantha, trying to diffuse the tension, suggested, “Maybe try the market? They might have something that could help.”

Mia, with a determined nod, dashed out of the hospital. She hopped into her car and sped off, leaving tire marks in her wake.

Stevie, watching her leave, muttered, “Well, that escalated quickly.”

Nya chuckled and shook her head. “It’s a Mia thing. She’ll come back with whatever she thinks is necessary.”

In the meantime, the kids sat in the waiting area, their expressions a mix of concern and amusement. They watched as Mia’s car disappeared down the road, hoping she’d find what she needed and return with some good news.
