Chapter Five
Nya, ever the pragmatist, forced herself to think clearly. "Blackie," she began, her voice firm, "we understand you care about Mia. But we can't just ignore this threat. We need to know where this place is and what's going on."
Blackie hesitated, his tail flicking nervously. He glanced at the communicator, then back at the group, his internal struggle evident. His loyalty to Mia warred with his growing unease about her intentions.
"There… there is a way," he finally meowed, his voice barely a whisper. "But it's dangerous. And you have to promise not to hurt Mia, no matter what."
A tense silence followed. The others exchanged glances, the weight of Blackie's words heavy on their shoulders. They couldn't condone violence, especially against their own sister.
"We can't make promises we might break, Blackie," Kai stated, his voice firm. "But we can promise to listen, to understand why Mia feels this way. And if she's a threat, we'll try to neutralize it without violence."
Blackie considered this for a moment, then let out a defeated sigh. "Alright," he conceded. "But you have to be very sneaky. This place… it's special to Mia. She wouldn't want anyone else to know about it."
A plan began to form in Nya's mind. "We can accompany you, Blackie. But not directly. We'll follow you at a distance, hidden in the shadows. That way, we can see where this place is and what Mia's up to without her knowing we're there."
Blackie seemed hesitant at first, but after some deliberation, he reluctantly agreed. He led them out of the monastery, his steps quicker than usual, a nervous energy radiating from him.
The group followed discreetly, staying hidden amongst the trees and foliage. The journey was long and arduous, filled with tense silences and stolen glances. Blackie, ever the feline guide, navigated the terrain with practiced ease, leading them deeper and deeper into a secluded part of the island.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, they arrived at a clearing. Blackie paused, his ears twitching. In the center of the clearing stood a sight that took their breath away – a pristine beach, bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun. The gentle waves lapped at the shore, creating a soothing melody that calmed their nerves.
"This is it," Blackie whispered, his voice barely audible. "The place."
The others emerged from their hiding spots, their eyes wide with wonder. This idyllic scene did not match the image of a dangerous meeting place. But before they could voice their confusion, a voice filled the air.
"Blackie, my baby boy!" A figure emerged from behind a palm tree, her voice filled with a genuine warmth that contradicted Blackie's earlier claims. It was Mia, but unlike the cold, hostile persona they'd heard through the communicator, she looked… normal. Happy even.
Relief washed over Jay, a wave so strong it almost knocked him off his feet. Mia wasn't evil. She wasn't plotting their demise. Blackie, for all his dramatics, had led them to a beautiful beach, and Mia… well, Mia just seemed happy to see her cat.
Blackie raced towards Mia, a blur of black fur, and they launched into a heartwarming embrace. Relief flooded Jay's system, a warm counterpoint to the confusion swirling in his mind.
Mia, far from the vengeful mastermind they'd envisioned, seemed perfectly at ease. In fact, she was downright chipper. Her question, however, shattered the fragile peace.
"Where is he?" she asked, her gaze scanning the clearing.
Blackie, still clinging to her affectionately, let out a dramatic yell. "Nelson! Get over here!"
A moment later, a tall, gangly figure emerged from behind a palm tree. He looked like a stereotypical paperboy, complete with a bag slung over his shoulder and a nervous demeanor. This, was Nelson – Mia's boyfriend.
Nelson approached cautiously, his eyes widening slightly as they landed on the group of hidden ninjas. He cleared his throat awkwardly. "Mia," he began, his voice laced with a mixture of concern and annoyance, "have you even forgiven the ninja?"
Mia, still nestled against Blackie, shrugged nonchalantly. "Should I?" she mused. "I mean, first of all, they boss me around all the time. Then they go on some mission without me, completely disobeying Wu! And after all that, they expect me to just forgive and forget?"
Blackie, seemingly emboldened by Mia's playful resistance, let out a pointed meow. "And not to mention," he hissed, his voice barely audible to the ninjas, "they probably deserve a little roughhousing for nearly giving you a heart attack back there."
Nelson, however, seemed oblivious to the cat's remark. He reached into his bag and, to everyone's surprise, pulled out a gleaming sword. His voice, previously timid, now held a hint of steel.
"Oh, that's the last straw!" he declared, raising the sword in a mock threat.
Mia, still nestled against Blackie, let out a peal of laughter. "It's fine, Nels," she said, her voice dripping with playful sarcasm. "They're harmless… mostly."
The scene before them was a comical contradiction to the tense situation they'd expected. Mia, far from being a villain, seemed to have a playful rivalry with the ninja and a healthy dose of sass for her overly protective boyfriend.
With each passing moment, the tension in the group eased. They were still confused, yes, but a sense of bewilderment replaced the initial fear. What exactly was going on in Australia? And why did Mia run away in the first place?
Then, Mia said, " So.... How's work?"
Nelson shrugged. " It's good, I guess. But it's still not enough for the condo."
Mia smiled. " Why don't we rent a house?"
" A house?" Nelson echoed. " But-"
" You said it's not enough to BUY the condo. But, with the money you earned, plus the money I have in savings, we might be able to rent a whole house."
Nelson shrugged. " Fine by me. But, which house are we supposed to rent?"
"A house, huh?" Jay whispered to Nya, frustration lacing his voice. "What's the big deal about a condo anyway?"
Nya shook her head, equally bewildered. "Beats me. Maybe something they were planning before Mia… well, you know."
Suddenly, the seemingly innocuous conversation took a sharp turn.
"We need a place with enough space for…" Nelson began, his voice trailing off, but his worried expression spoke volumes.
"Blackie to rule over, of course!" Mia finished with a playful flourish, scratching Blackie behind the ears. The cat, ever the picture of feline nonchalance, simply responded with a satisfied purr.
A dark suspicion bloomed in Kai's mind. "Blackie needs a whole house?" he murmured to Cole, disbelief coloring his tone.
Cole chuckled silently. "Seems so. Explains the whole 'baby boy' thing. More like a spoiled emperor, if you ask me."
The conversation continued, focusing on house hunting – location, size, amenities. The ninjas listened intently, hoping to glean some insight into the condo mystery or the extravagant house needs, but nothing clicked.
Finally, Lloyd, unable to bear the suspense any longer, decided to take a gamble. He emerged from his hiding spot, hands raised in a gesture of peace.
"Mia?" he called out tentatively.
The scene froze. All eyes snapped towards him. Mia blinked, surprised for a moment, then a sardonic smile stretched across her face.
"Lloyd!" she exclaimed, her voice dripping with a coldness that sent shivers down Jay's spine. "The ninja delegation. Why the theatrics? Couldn't you just knock?"
Nelson, however, wasn't buying it. He whipped out a real, gleaming sword, his grip tight and his eyes narrowed into slits. Mia, mirroring his hostility, swirled her hand, and a miniature cyclone materialized in her palm, crackling with raw wind power.
Blackie, fur bristling, let out a furious hiss. "I told you guys not to come!" he spat, his voice laced with betrayal.
Mia, her voice laced with icy venom, addressed Lloyd. "So, you finally decided to show your faces. Couldn't stay away for long, could you, ninja?"
Jay, bewildered by the sudden shift in atmosphere, stammered, "Mia, we don't understand. We just wanted to see how you were doing."
Mia's wind intensified, sending a stray palm frond flying towards Jay. He barely dodged it, his confusion morphing into a growing sense of betrayal. "See how I'm doing?" she echoed, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "After everything you've done? After leaving me behind, after disobeying Wu, after bossing me around like I'm some helpless child?"
Blackie nudged against Mia's leg, his earlier affection replaced by a wary caution. "Mia, calm down," he meowed softly.
But Mia was far from calm. Her eyes blazed with anger as she pointed an accusing finger at the ninjas. "You never listen! You never take me seriously! And then you have the audacity to show up here uninvited?"
Nelson, his stance defensive, mirrored Mia's anger. "They have a lot to answer for, Mia," he growled, his voice low and threatening.
The ninjas exchanged panicked glances. The situation had gone from bewildering to downright hostile in a matter of seconds. The mention of a condo seemed like a distant memory now, replaced by a more immediate concern – their own safety.
Lloyd, ever the diplomat, stepped forward, his hands raised in a placating gesture. "Mia, please," he pleaded. "We just want to talk. We can explain everything."
Mia's wind howled in response, whipping her hair around her face like a furious halo. "There's nothing to explain! You've made your choices, and now you have to deal with the consequences!"
The situation had reached a stalemate. Mia, fueled by a deep-seated resentment towards the ninja, stood ready to attack. The ninjas, confused and hurt by her hostility, had no idea how to de-escalate the situation. Blackie, caught in the middle, looked torn between his loyalty to Mia and his tentative bond with the ninja.
Suddenly, a small voice, innocent and curious, pierced through the charged atmosphere.
"Mommy, what's going on here?"
A small figure emerged from behind Nelson, a little girl with wide, curious eyes and a head full of long, straight/ wavy brown hair. She looked at Mia, then at the ninjas, her brow furrowed in confusion.
The sight of her daughter seemed to snap Mia out of her rage. The wind died down, the anger melting from her eyes. "Oh, Samantha," she said, her voice softening considerably. "It's nothing. Just grown-up stuff you wouldn't understand."
Samantha, however, wasn't satisfied. She tilted her head, her gaze flickering between the tense faces. "But then why are you fighting Uncle Jay and Aunt Nya and the others?" she persisted, her voice a mix of concern and childish defiance.
Mia hesitated, her gaze darting nervously towards Nelson, who remained stoic, his sword still clutched tightly. "We're not fighting, sweetie," she finally said, her voice strained. "We're just having a… a disagreement."
Samantha wasn't buying it. She stomped her little foot, her lower lip quivering. "You're yelling and they look scared! And Uncle Jay almost got hit by that wind thing!"
Mia winced at the mention of the wind attack. A flicker of guilt crossed her face, quickly replaced by a look of frustration. She knelt down before her daughter, her voice gentle but firm.
"Samantha, this is something between me and the ninja. It's important, and I can't explain it right now. But trust me, everything will be alright."
Samantha, unsatisfied with the answer, looked up at Nelson with tearful eyes. "Daddy," she whimpered, "is Mommy going to hurt Uncle Jay?"
Nelson, ever the protector, knelt beside Mia, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. "No, sweetheart," he said reassuringly. "There won't be any fighting. We'll figure things out, okay?"
The sight of their concerned daughter forced Mia to re-evaluate the situation. Her anger towards the ninja was still simmering, but it was overshadowed by the need to protect her child. A defeated sigh escaped her lips.
"Alright, everyone," she said, her voice drained. "Let's just… stand down for now. Samantha doesn't need to see this."
The ninjas, relieved that the immediate threat of violence had passed, slowly lowered their guards. They were still confused by Mia's hostility, but the presence of her daughter added a new layer of complexity to the situation.
Blackie, sensing the shift in mood, rubbed against Mia's leg purring softly. He looked at the ninjas with a pleading meow, a silent plea for understanding.
Mia, her eyes filled with a mix of anger and sadness, looked at the ninjas. "We'll talk," she said, her voice barely a whisper. "But not now. Not in front of her."
