Chapter 2
The air crackled with a different kind of energy as the office door swung open with a bang. Agent Apprentice, still reeling from the revelation of his true identity, flinched at the sudden intrusion.
In a whirlwind of green and red, Lloyd and Kai burst into the room. Lloyd, the ever-serious leader, skidded to a halt, his emerald eyes scanning the scene. Kai, the hotheaded Master of Fire, sputtered behind him, panting slightly.
"Where is he?" Lloyd demanded, his voice tight.
Mia pointed to her brother.
" There, Lloyd. He's there."
Jay, who was confused, couldn't help but feel a bit suspicious.
"Who are you?" Jay challenged.
"We're your team," Kai interjected, catching his breath. "Lloyd Garmadon, Green Ninja, and I'm Kai, Master of Fire. We need to speak with you, immediately."
Jay, his own confusion, a storm cloud on his face, looked from Mia to the two newcomers. A sliver of recognition flickered in his eyes as he met Lloyd's gaze.
"Green Ninja?" he murmured, the words sounding foreign yet strangely familiar.
The tension in the room was thick enough to cut with a sword. Mia, Lloyd, and Kai all stood their ground, sizing each other up. Apprentice, ever the mediator (or at least, trying to be), cleared his throat awkwardly.
"Perhaps," he suggested, voice shaky, "we should all take a seat and explain ourselves."
Mia turned to him. " When did you ever get in?!" She asked.
The air crackled with a chaotic mix of emotions - shock, relief, and a healthy dose of suspicion. Lloyd, ever the leader, broke the silence, his voice calm despite the whirlwind entrance.
"Jay," he started, his emerald eyes searching Jay's face, "it's good to see you again. We've been looking everywhere for you."
Recognition flickered brighter in Jay's eyes this time. "Green Ninja?" he repeated, the question hanging in the air. He glanced at Mia, a silent plea for clarification.
Mia, understanding his confusion, stepped forward. "Jay, this is Lloyd, your teammate. And Kai," she gestured to the fire-wielding ninja wiping sweat from his brow, "Master of Fire. We have others back at home. Nya, Master of Water. Zane, Master of Ice. Cole, Master of Earth." Then she leaned closer to Lloyd.
" Cole is home, right? If he doesn't make that stew-"
" Mia! Please!" Lloyd cried. " We get that you're nervous, but this won't help us at all with regaining your brother's memories and getting him back on the team."
"Team?" Jay scoffed, a hint of anger creeping into his voice. "What team? What's going on here?"
Kai, his fiery temper simmering, was about to retort when Lloyd held up a hand, silencing him.
"We understand you're confused, Jay," Lloyd said gently. "The Merge messed with everyone's memories. But Ninjago needs you back."
The words "Ninjago" seemed to trigger a response in Jay. He clutched his head, a grimace twisting his features. Images flashed before his eyes - a colossal dragon, a dark city rising from the ground, a battle against... something monstrous.
"Ninjago..." he muttered, a tremor in his voice. "The Overlord... the Oni... are they..."
" You were one who helped us defeat them, Jay. You were a hero."
Apprentice, still overwhelmed by the situation, finally managed to speak. "Heroes? But... he's an Agent. This is a Merge Rehabilitation Center."
Kai rolled his eyes. "With all due respect, Agent," he said, his voice dripping with sarcasm, "this place seems about as helpful as a bucket of water on a volcano. We need Jay, and we need him now."
" Kai! Shut your mouth this instant! We're here for Jay, not an argument." Mia said. Then, she looked at the others."We can figure this out," she said, her voice firm. "But we need to do it together. Maybe Jay can help you, but you need to help him remember who he is."
Lloyd, understanding the weight of her words, nodded.
"We can do that," he said, extending a hand towards Jay. "But first, we need to get you out of here."
Jay, his memories still fragmented, hesitated. He looked at Mia, his sister, a beacon of familiarity in this storm of confusion. He then looked at Lloyd, the Green Ninja, a symbol of something he couldn't quite grasp but felt strangely drawn to.
Finally, with a deep breath, Jay reached out and grasped Lloyd's hand. "Alright," he said, a spark of determination flickering in his eyes. "Let's do this."
" Wait, you don't even remember my sister? Nya?" Kai asked.
" No. Should I?" Jay asked.
" Should you?! Yes, you should! That girl misses you dearly!" Mia exclaimed.
" Is she someone special?"
Mia huffed. " When I get my hands on who did this-"
" Mia! Not now! Please!" Lloyd called.
" But it's true! They've made my brother very annoying!"
" You always called him annoying." Kai reminded her.
Mia shot him a look. " When we were joking, yes. This is no joke."
The room erupted in a cacophony of questions and exclamations. Lloyd, ever the leader, tried to regain control.
"Alright everyone, settle down!" he boomed, his voice surprisingly strong considering the whirlwind they'd just entered. "We can sort through this later. Right now, our priority is getting Jay out of here."
He turned to Jay, his emerald eyes filled with concern. "We understand this is a lot to take in, Jay. But trust us, we're here to help you regain your memories. And Mia," he added, a hint of sympathy in his voice, "we'll answer all your questions too. But for now, let's get out of this place."
Apprentice, still flustered but recognizing the urgency, spoke up. "There's a security protocol. I can't just let you take him."
Kai, never one for patience, scoffed. "Then let's just disable it." He cracked his knuckles, a spark igniting in his palm.
Mia, however, placed a hand on his arm. "Wait, Kai. We can't cause a scene. Remember Wu's teachings?"
Kai sighed, the fire in his palm flickering out. "Fine. But there has to be another way."
Lloyd, ever the strategist, surveyed the room. His eyes landed on a holographic display flickering with data. "Perhaps we can use this to our advantage. Apprentice, is there a way to modify Jay's file to allow his release?"
Apprentice hesitated, his eyes darting between the determined ninja and the holographic display. The situation was clearly outside his usual protocol. But seeing the genuine concern in Mia and Lloyd's eyes, he felt a flicker of doubt about his role in this strange facility.
"Maybe," he mumbled, approaching the display. "There might be a loophole. But it would require administrator access..."
A mischievous glint appeared in Kai's eyes. "Leave that to me." He sauntered towards the manager's office, a sly grin plastered on his face.
"Hey, Agent-turned-amnesiac-Lightning-brother-in-law!" he called out, earning a glare from Mia. "Remember that time you borrowed my flamethrower and accidentally set Wu's beard on fire?"
Jay's hand instinctively twitched towards his side, as if searching for a weapon that wasn't there. A flicker of recognition crossed his features.
"Wait a minute," he stammered. "Fire... beard... wasn't that...?"
Kai winked. "Exactly. Now, where'd you put the admin keycard again?"
Apprentice watched in disbelief as Kai, with a surprising amount of charm and a well-placed anecdote, managed to sweet-talk the confused Jay into handing over a keycard he didn't even know he possessed.
With a sigh of relief, Apprentice used the keycard to modify Jay's file. The security lock on the door clicked open.
"Alright," Lloyd announced, a determined glint in his eyes. "Let's get out of here. We have a lot to catch you up on, Jay. And you, Mia, have some introductions to make."
" Introductions?!" She cried out. " Oh, I'm good at those! Jay, this is a potted plant, this is a strand of hair......"
