Chapter 1- Escape
One day, Nya was walking in the hallway when she heard a lot of grumbles and a long Bang from Mia's room. Intrigued, she turned and walked to the doorway.
Mia was putting and taking stuff out of her suitcase and bag.
" No.... not that." She mumbled, throwing the item into her closet before realizing she was being spied on. She tuned to see Nya.
" What do you want?" She asked, annoyed.
" Nothing. I just heard sounds from your room ad wanted to investigate." Nya replied.
" Well, now you know. Now GO." Mia, with strength that defied her age, pushed Nya out of the room and slammed her door with a Bang. Seconds later, a satisfying click came from the door. Mia had locked it. Then, Mia turned and returned to her shenanigans.
Nya, her curiosity piqued, tiptoed back to Mia's door. The muffled sounds of rustling fabric and hushed muttering fueled her determination. She pressed her ear cautiously against the cool wood.
Suddenly, a loud "Ow!" echoed from inside, followed by a string of muttered curses. Nya recoiled, a nervous giggle escaping her lips. Clearly, Mia wasn't just packing clothes. What could she possibly be putting in her bag that caused such a strong reaction?
Deciding a more subtle approach was needed, Nya scanned the hallway for inspiration. Her eyes landed on a discarded magazine lying on the floor. With a mischievous grin, she ripped out a thin strip of paper and carefully slid it under the door. A tense few seconds ticked by. Then, a small shuffle from inside sent a shiver down Nya's spine. Did Mia catch her?
Suddenly, the doorknob rattled. Mia's muffled voice drifted through the wood, "Are you still there, Nya? Because if you are, you're in for a world of trouble!"
Nya's heart raced as she quickly pulled the strip of paper back, retreating down the hallway as quietly as she could. She pressed her back against the wall, holding her breath, hoping Mia wouldn't actually come out and catch her. Moments later, the rattling stopped, and the muffled sounds resumed from within the room.
Relieved but still curious, Nya considered her options. She could try again later when Mia was less likely to be around, or she could simply confront her friend directly. But knowing Mia's temper, the latter seemed like a risky move.
An idea sparked in Nya's mind. She quietly made her way to the kitchen, where she knew a spare key to every room in the house was kept in a small drawer. After a quick search, she found the key labeled "Mia's Room." Pocketing it, she tiptoed back to the hallway and waited until she was certain Mia was deeply engrossed in whatever she was doing.
With the stealth of a cat, Nya approached Mia's door once more. She gently inserted the key into the lock, turning it slowly to avoid making any noise. With a soft click, the door unlocked. Nya took a deep breath and cautiously pushed the door open just a crack, peering inside.
Mia was hunched over her suitcase, muttering to herself and vigorously shaking a small, locked box. Nya's eyes widened in surprise. What on earth was Mia up to?
A sudden creak from the door made Mia whip her head around. Nya froze, caught in the act. For a tense moment, they stared at each other.
"Nya! What the heck are you doing?" Mia's eyes blazed with a mix of anger and embarrassment.
Nya stammered, "I-I was just worried about you! You seemed so upset, and I heard a loud noise. I thought you might need help."
" I don't need help! I just need to be left alone!" Mia yelled. She snatched the key from Nya's hand and kicked her out of the room.
Nya stumbled backward, the door slamming shut in her face. The sound of the lock clicking into place echoed ominously in the hallway. She stood there for a moment, feeling a mix of embarrassment and determination. Clearly, whatever Mia was up to was something she wanted to keep hidden. But why?
As Nya retreated to her room, her mind raced with possibilities. What was in that small, locked box? And why was Mia so secretive about it? She decided to wait a little longer before trying to confront Mia again. Perhaps if she gave her some time to cool down, Mia might be more willing to share what was going on.
Hours passed, and the house gradually fell into a quiet lull. Nya, unable to focus on anything else, kept glancing at the clock, waiting for the right moment. Eventually, she heard Mia's door creak open and the soft sound of her footsteps heading towards the bathroom.
Nya seized the opportunity. She tiptoed back to Mia's room and gently tried the door. It was still locked, but she had an idea. She quickly retrieved a hairpin from her room and returned to Mia's door. With steady hands, she inserted the pin into the lock and jiggled it, trying to remember the technique she had seen in a spy movie once.
After a few tense moments, she heard a satisfying click. The door swung open just enough for her to slip inside. Nya moved quickly, knowing she had only a few minutes before Mia returned.
Her eyes darted around the room until they landed on the small, locked box on Mia's bed. She hurried over and examined it. The box was sturdy, with a tiny keyhole. Nya bit her lip, realizing she needed another way to open it. She glanced around and spotted a paperclip on Mia's desk. Grabbing it, she straightened it out and tried to pick the lock on the box.
Just as she felt the lock give way, she heard footsteps approaching. Her heart pounded in her chest as she quickly opened the box and peered inside. Her eyes widened in shock. Inside the box were several small, intricately carved wooden figures and a handful of photographs.
Before she could make sense of what she was seeing, Mia burst back into the room. "Nya, what are you doing?" she yelled, her face a mix of fury and panic.
Nya stepped back, holding up her hands. "Mia, I'm sorry! I just... I wanted to understand what was going on. Why are you hiding these?"
Mia's eyes filled with tears as she rushed forward, snatching the box from Nya's hands. "You have no right to snoop around my stuff!" Then, her eyes turned red. Nya knew what was going to happen.
" You will pay!" Mia yelled. Holding her hand up, the Scroll of Forbidden Spinjitzu flew into her hand.
" Mia, calm down. We can just talk...." Nya started, but Mia cut her off.
" The time for talking is done. You've pushed the limit!" Without another word, Mia zapped Nya.
Nya stumbled back, her energy draining quickly. Above her head, she saw something blue. A sinking feeling came to her gut.
That was her power. Her elemental power.
As Nya's vision blurred, she saw her own elemental power, the blue energy of water, swirling above her head, now controlled by Mia. Nya's strength waned, and she collapsed to the floor, struggling to stay conscious. Mia's face was a mask of rage and hurt, her hands trembling with power.
"Mia... please... why are you doing this?" Nya gasped, trying to reach out to her friend.
Mia's eyes flashed with anger. "You couldn't leave well enough alone, Nya! This is all your fault!"
The Scroll of Forbidden Spinjitzu glowed ominously in Mia's hand, feeding her power and amplifying her emotions. She raised her hand, preparing to unleash another attack. But then, she hesitated. Her eyes flickered, and for a brief moment, Nya saw a glimmer of the old Mia, the friend she knew and cared about.
Taking advantage of that split second of hesitation, Nya summoned every ounce of her remaining strength and managed to roll to the side, narrowly avoiding the next blast of energy. She struggled to her feet, her body aching and weak. Desperation fueled her movements as she tried to think of a way to reach Mia.
"Mia, this isn't you!" Nya pleaded, her voice hoarse. "I don't know what's going on, but we can figure it out together. Please, just put the scroll down!"
Mia's eyes narrowed, and she clenched the scroll tighter. "You don't understand! No one understands!"
With a determined look, Nya stood her ground. "Then help me understand. Whatever it is, we can face it together. We're friends, remember?"
Mia's resolve wavered. Her eyes darted to the wooden figures and photographs scattered on the floor, remnants of her past that she had tried so hard to protect. She took a shaky breath, and the energy around her flickered. She dropped the staff and said, " Get. Out. Now."
When Nya hesitated, Mia yelled, " I SAID, NOW!"
Nya stumbled once more and scurried out of the room. Something was wrong, and she needed to find out what was going on. Now.
