Christmas Eve Chaos | Canon Jaya
As a part of my Christmas prompt raffle, this was requested by Hydroelectricjaya. I hope you enjoy!
Nya's POV
Six days and seven hours, that's how long it's been since we last saw Jay.
It started like any of our typical mid range missions. It was difficult enough to bring the entire team, but we didn't expect anything to come of it. All we knew was that a mad scientist type guy had been concocting something that he was going to use to turn the elemental masters against each other.
Little did we know that he found a way to not only cause a mutation in the DNA of elemental masters that increases the production of testosterone to increase aggression and strength, but he also found a way to rewire the elemental master's brain. He caused the frontal lobe, the area of the brain associated with reasoning, to be partially inhibited as well as creating more stimulation to the limbic system and the amygdala, the emotional center of the brain.
Our mistake was coming in too confident. We assumed that because he has no fighting skills, he would be easy to beat. We were wrong. He didn't need to be good at fighting when he could essentially turn one of the best fighters in Ninjago to his side.
We got distracted easily, and he snuck up on us. He injected Jay and fled the scene with the serum, only leaving the syringe that he injected Jay with.
It was terrifying, watching Jay slowly unravel. None of us knew what to do. Slowly, he became more irritable, more aggressive, until he snapped on us. It was if a lightning storm hit inside of the warehouse. He knocked Kai unconscious, and we had to flee.
When we went back the next day, prepared with vengestone, he was gone. We took the syringe with us, so we could analyze the serum in an attempt to create an antidote. Zane, PIXAL, and I were able to finish it yesterday, but we can't do anything if we don't know where he is.
"Nya, I think you need to take a break. It's Christmas Eve, and Jay would want for you to celebrate it," at the sound of my brother's voice, I spin around. He's standing in my doorway, a sympathetic look on his face. He has on one of the matching Christmas sweaters Edna gave us several years back. Each year, she makes us matching sweaters, and while Kai usually doesn't wear them, I see he had a change of heart this year.
"He's out there somewhere, Kai. I'm going to find him," I inform Kai. He sighs.
"Jay is only going to be found when he wants to be. He's a ninja. We're masters of stealth. When he wants to be found, we'll be ready."
"Zane says that dinner is ready. Your parents also just arrived," Lloyd pops his head in the doorway.
"We're coming," Kai informs him. Lloyd nods and scurries off.
"If anything can cheer someone up, it's Zane's food," Kai insists. I sigh, knowing that my brother is just as stubborn as I am, and I don't have the energy to counter it. Shutting my computer, I stand up. He wraps his arms around me.
"I miss him."
"It sure is uncomfortably quiet. We'll get him back in no time."
The two of us make our way down the stairs to the table that stretches throughout the entire temple of airjitzu. While this isn't where we currently live, we always hold holidays here due to the space.
On one end of the table, we have our friends like Dareth and Ronin and several elemental masters. Then, we have Lou, Cole, then Seliel followed by Zane and PIXAL. Lloyd, Wu, and Misako sit at the head of the table. Our parents sit next to them, followed by Kai and Skylor before myself. Next to me is usually Jay and the Walkers, except this year there is going to be an empty seat next to me.
"Nya, Kai!" our mom cheers as the two of us come into her sight. In the distance, dad is putting the presents they brought for everyone under the tree.
"Mom!" Kai says in the same manner, cracking a smile. He happily welcomes her embrace.
"How are my favorite elemental masters doing?" dad jogs over, still spry, and wraps his arms around me.
There's something about being in your parent's embrace that makes you want to let everything out and open up about everything. It's as if you tell them, they can fix it and make it all better. I know this situation they definitely can't fix, but I want them too,
"Better now that you two are here. Skylor is outside, if you want me to get her," Kai takes over for me, diverting the attention to his fiancé.
He popped the question within days after we left Prime Empire. Being cubed really showed him how little time he might have left, especially in our occupation, and inspired him to take a leap and do what he had been wanting to do. While the wedding date is still pending, it'll hopefully be soon.
"I'd love that," mom smiles. After giving a quick yet genuine embrace to our dad, Kai jogs off to get her.
I drift off, my attention going to the Christmas tree brightly lit behind us. Our tree is ten feet tall, wrapped in various ornaments from all of our childhoods. Several different strands of lights, some behind multicolored while others being in various different shapes, wrap around the towering tree.
Suddenly, all of the lights on the tree turn off, just like the rest of the lights in the temple. The entire room turns pitch black.
"Oh great, of course the power goes out when Jay's not here to work as a temporary generator," Kai grumbles as he walks inside. I pull out my phone and turn on the flashlight.
"The city is out too. Sel and I were trying to guess what buildings were which when it all went black," Cole says from somewhere in the darkness.
"According to my database, all of Ninjago is out of power. A widespread power outage appeared out of nowhere," Zane informs us.
"Come on. How does all of Ninjago lose power at the same time?" I can mentally picture my brother throwing his hands in the air.
"There also appears to be no damage to any of the mechanics in the electrical circuit. It's as if all of the electricity simply disappeared," Zane tells us.
"According to my diagnostics, there is only one person capable of a blackout this sudden and to this degree..." PIXAL starts next to Zane.
"Jay! We need to go get him..."
"No, we need a plan. The city is probably in chaos right now. Zane and I will go and try to help people in unsafe areas with the power off. Cole, Kai, and Nya can go get him," Lloyd steps in.
"Not to be that guy, but last time I was electrocuted! I don't want that to happen again," Kai crosses his arms.
"This time, we have the antidote. We can do this."
---
"Oh, the deja vu, except last time we were facing an army of vermilion and not my evil best friend," Cole jumps off of his bike. Kai and I do the same, wiping our hands on our gi's. Unlike every other building we drove by, this one is still lit up. However, we parked decently away for safety purposes, so we have to walk through the dark for a bit. While Cole and I use flashlights, Kai creates a torch out of his hand.
"Wait, do you guys see that?" Kai points out with his flame. I gasp when I see a body lying on the ground. The three of us rush over to the man, and he's just unconscious, not dead. I let out a sigh of relief.
"Uh, guys...there's more," Cole pulls our attention away from this man. He points the flashlight around, and there are over a dozen people knocked out on the ground.
"Maybe we should come back another time. He clearly has a lot of visitors," Kai suggest. I glare back at him and start to walk forward.
When I open the door, my heart beats rapidly in my chest. Jay leans casually against the generator, and seeing him makes my heart ache. He switched out his gi for a fitted blue t shirt, a leather jacket, and black jeans.
"Oooo, you guys finally showed up. Took you long enough. It's as if the entire city came looking for me," he grumbles, standing up a bit straighter.
"You knocked them all out cold," Cole says, putting a little smirk on Jay's face.
"I found a sweet spot between voltage and amperage that gets them out cold within seconds. It wasn't that hard to find, to be honest. Nya knows how good I am with finding sweet spots, don't ya?" his comment brings heat to my cheeks.
"Ew, I did not need to hear that," Kai gags quietly to himself.
"We don't want to hurt you, Jay. We just want to help you," Cole tells him in a level voice. I watch Jay push off the generator so he's standing up by himself.
"I don't need help, Cole. If anything, that shot was help in itself. By...," Jay starts walking back and forth and rambling, evidence that my boyfriend is clearly still in there, just partially tainted. His voice is slightly deeper, and I can see a layer of facial hair growing on his face, probably due to him not shaving and an increased growth rate due to the in increase in testosterone.
"At least we know he still likes talking," Kai mumbles, quickly getting a shock of lightning right in front of his feet. He yelps and jumps backwards.
"I can hear you," he snaps, a cold glare through his typically bright eyes.
"Why now? Why did you want us here now, on Christmas Eve? I've been trying to find you for days," I ask him, emotions I don't want coming up coming up. It hurts, seeing him so unlike himself and against us. Part of me believed that once we found him, he'd let us inject him and he'd go back to normal, but clearly not.
"Because, I'm going to ruin Christmas, duh. No one just accidentally takes all of the power on Christmas Eve, especially not me."
"But why? You love Christmas," Cole questions.
"Because, I realized that it's the root of all of my insecurities. Around Christmas time, all of the kids at school would bully me and tell me all I would get for Christmas is trash because I lived in a scrapyard. I would tell them that's not true and that my parents work hard to get me presents. They would call me 'trashboy' year after year, and one year, kids even wrapped up a crushed up can and gave it to me," he balls his hands up at his side, clenching and unclenching his jaw. My heart aches hearing this information. I vaguely know some of the stories, but I never knew it was this bad.
"My entire life I've felt worthless. First, it was that. Then, I was always treated like a joke. Hell, you all won't even send the full team to try to defeat me! I'm constantly called the weakest ninja, but does this look weak!" the lights above us start rapidly flickering on and off as Jay sucks even more electricity out of the generator. The light just feet from our heads starts flickering more rapidly than the others before it explodes, broken glass flying everywhere. As the lights flicker, he shoots his power into a metal pole, which sends the current throughout the rest of the metal in the building. Suddenly, the lightning spikes from the metal and connects at the floor just three feet behind us. It sears the ground, causing a small fire that Kai extinguishes.
"You're worth so much Jay," I tell him, making him stop abruptly. "You're funny, and you always know how to cheer up a bad situation. You've saved my ass on multiple occasions. You're an absolute sweetheart to me, and I believe that you'd do practically anything to make me, and the team for that matter, happy. We think you're worth it..."
"You didn't think I was worth it after Zane died and you ghosted me for months. You didn't think I was worth it when you literally cheated on me with my best friend! I spent so many nights wondering why I wasn't enough for you, Nya. I cried every night for weeks straight because I felt so unlovable. I hosted a show to create a false sense of love and worth that would keep me from going insane!" his words are like daggers in my heart. In his eyes, I see the same look of hurt that I saw years ago in that stupid trailer, and immense guilt creeps through my system. I watch the blue lightning prickle on his skin, getting larger and larger as he gets more upset. It crackles as his hair starts to rise up with the static electricity.
"I regret it; I regret it all. I watched your show every night, Jay, and there were so many times I almost picked up that phone, but I didn't think that you would want me to call you," I tell him, talking a step towards him. He holds up his hands, lightning crackling between his fingers. The field of electricity behind him grows.
"Get away from me. I'll zap you!" he threatens.
"I want you, Jay, and I'll always only want you," I reassure him, seeing a hurt shell of my boyfriend as opposed to any form of villain. The lightning around him begins to shrink.
"Then why have you never said it back?"
"Said what back?"
"I love you."
The entire room is dead silent. I can hear the creaking of the generator. Water drips from a pipe in the distance. Jay's sapphire eyes stare into mine, and all I can see is rage and hurt. Water wells up in my eyes seeing him like this, knowing that all of these emotions have been bottled up inside of him.
I take another step closer to him. "Because I got scared, and I'm still scared. I'm scared that if I say it out loud, I'll lose you somehow. The last words I said to my mom were 'I love you' before she disappeared, and I just can't handle losing you. These past days have been absolute hell, Jay. It's been so hard to not have you there," as he slowly lowers his hands, the electricity around him fades. I take more steps towards him until we're nearly touching.
I reach my hand up and cup his face. Once my skin comes into contact with his, am electrical current runs through my fingers and through the rest of my body. I close my eyes, missing this feeling, missing the feeling of him.
Unexpectedly, he grabs onto my waist and picks me up, so my back is pressed up against the generator. He smashes his lips into mine, and I happily kiss him back, missing his touch. Conscious of my brother and Cole watching, I make sure to keep it mild, something hard when I feel Jay's power everywhere.
As his lips reach my neck, I pretend to adjust my pants while I'm really grabbing the antidote. In one quick movement, I insert the syringe into his trapezius and inject him with the liquid. Because we also put some tranquilizer in the serum to prevent aggression while he was coming off of it, he slows down, and after I jump off, he falls down, and I catch uphim before setting him down on the ground.
"I'm gonna pretend like I didn't see any of that," I look back, and my brother is covering his eyes.
"Hey, increased testosterone means increased sex drive, so it's not a shock that that happened," I pick up the syringe. Dragging Jay back over to the generator, I prop him up so he's not just sprawled out across the ground. "You two can head back. I'll wait here for when he needs to turn back on the power."
"Are you sure Nya? We don't know for sure if it worked," Cole asks, skeptically.
"It worked. I know it did," I run a hand through his hair.
"Alright. Just when he wakes up, tell Jay that I missed him," Cole requests, and I give him a small smile.
"Of course."
Once the two of them leave, I sit next to Jay, watching his chest rise and fall. I examine his face that I've missed seeing over the past several days. His auburn hair is more tousled than usual, possibly a result of what happened right before I I injected him. Being close enough to see the faint layer of freckles over his cheeks gives me happiness.
Once Jay starts stirring, I back up a little to give him room. He begins to mumble and rub his eyes. When he opens them, the first thing I do is wrap my arms around him, realizing that space isn't something either of us need right now.
"What happened? The last thing I remember is getting a shot by that guy. Did we win?" he asks me, pulling me tight against him. His hand comfortingly runs up and down my back.
"He got away, and you disappeared for nearly a week. We found you here because you shut off all of the power in an attempt to ruin Christmas," I explain to him. He pulls away, his eyes wide.
"Is the power still off?"
"Yeah, you pulled all of the electricity out of the system constantly, so there would never be enough for it to work," I explain.
Quickly, he spins around and puts his hands on the generator. Closing his eyes, a large electrical current transfers from his body to the machine. As he goes, I see the lights in the distance flicker on. Once he's done, he's on the brink of collapse, his body slightly shaking.
"I bet absorbing all of that was a lot less tiring than that," he laughs to himself, strain in his voice. I can visibly see him gain more strength as his power recharges.
"Jay."
"Yeah?"
"I...I love you. It's long overdue, but I was just scared that if I said it, I'd lose you like I lost my parents. Being without you for the past week, it's been absolute hell, and I've missed you so much. It's really emphasized how much I need you in my life. I was working tirelessly all week to try to find you, and if it happened again, I would do the exact same thing because I love you, Jay Walker, I really do, and I care about you more than I thought was humanly possible. I'm so happy to be your yang," I let out all of the emotions that I've been bottling up, pure adoration in my voice as I hold onto his hands.
I see my boyfriend's eyes get watery as he pulls me into a tight hug. He nuzzles his face into the crook of my neck. "I love you, too, Nya, and I always will."
A/N I stayed up til like 1:30 writing it, and I was soooo close to finishing it, but I knew I had to get up at ten, so I had to stop. It was unfortunate.
I had a lot of fun writing that. While it wasn't as Christmasy as I hope, I already missed Christmas so oh well.
Thoughts on this?
Also, in case anyone wants to check it out, I posted the first chapter to my new AU, Unscripted. It's a fanfic where Ninjago is a tv show and all of the ninja are just the actors who play them (it was inspired by the season 13 blooper reel).
Thank you all so much!
