Meeting with the Mayor
(Kai's POV)
I know I'm supposed to be the Fire Ninja of the group, but even I have to admit that the heat we're dealing with today is a bit too much to handle, and just our luck that the sun decided to give us perfect beach day weather when we're stuck fixing what Lord Garmadon did to the Bounty, I would much rather be enjoying a nice cold ice cream while laying under a beach umbrella than spending all day repainting the Bounty.......
"Argh! This is taking forever!" I couldn't help myself from shouting out in frustration, wiping sweat off my forehead for what felt like the millionth time in the last hour "The less we complain about it the quicker we can get it done!" I heard the voice of my sister yell back at me from the front of the ship, her and Zane having the job of fixing the sails of the ship, replacing the ugly black and purple sails with Master Wu's original tan and red decorated sails
I was going to mock my sis but after realising it would have only ended with her throwing whatever tool she had in her hand directly at my head, I decided to save myself from the pain and just quietly return to painting over the purple parts of the Bounty with the original red paint, fitting that the Red Ninja ended up using the red paint I guess, at least if I accidentally get paint on myself it'll just blend right in with the rest of my gi
"This is going to be one of the rare times that I agree with Kai, this is taking absolutely forever!" Harumi cried out from her position at the very top of the deck, working with Cole on repainting the dragon head on the front of the Bounty, replacing Garmadon's darker colours with the bright red I was using "Thank you! I think...." I half thanked the white haired girl, not quite sure if she was being all that nice to me. Cole however didn't seem to mind how long this fixing the Bounty process was taking, he was just peacefully painting the dragon head while jamming out with his black and gold headphones
Restoring the Destiny's Bounty back to its former glory was taking so long that I had just used the last of my third can of red paint, with a slight groan I picked up the empty tin and threw it down to the rest of the empty cans of paint on the wooden dock leading to the Bounty, making my way across the brown deck of the ship to go fetch yet another can of red paint, passing by both Jay and Skylor who were busy with their own duties
Stepping off the half refurbished ship I walked over to the pile of paint cans that Master Wu had given us and carefully picked up a new tin of red paint that I needed, remembering how painful it looked when Jay had clumsily dropped a tin of paint on Cole's foot, if Cole wasn't such a chill guy I don't think we would have a Blue Ninja anymore
I took my time making my way back to my assigned position on the Bounty, trying to savour every moment of not working on the ship as I was bathed in the heat of the sun, shielding my eyes from the intense light with my ungloved hand, Master Wu could have at least left us out something to drink while we worked, heck I would even take tea I've become that desperate and tired of this work. I effortlessly tore open the new red paint and continued the boring process of dipping my paintbrush into the red liquid and applying it to the wood of the Bounty, watching as Garmadon's purple was slowly being replaced with the bright red colour, preparing myself to be doing this for the rest of the day
"Y'know, Lloyd is meant to be our leader and yet I don't see him out here dying in the heat helping us with the ship!" I could hear the upset voice of Skylor point out as she continued to work tirelessly "Lloyd is currently within the warehouse having a mentor talk with Master Wu in regards to his elemental power" Zane informed Skylor of Lloyd's whereabouts "A-A-Awfully convenient t-t-time for a m-mentor talk" Jay commented on the situation, using a nearby cloth to wipe the sweat off his freckled face
"What is that I heard about mentor talk?" The old voice of Master Wu suddenly asked as he and Lloyd walked out onto the docks, the Green Ninja finally joining us in the blazing heat "I do hope that you are not speaking about mentor talk in a disrespectful manner young Blue Ninja, it is an incredibly important time for any Ninja" Master Wu spoke to the nervous Jay in a scolding like manner, instantly making the auburn haired teen scared of a potential punishment
The Lightning Ninja stumbled backwards with his hands raised defensively "O-Of course n-not M-Master! M-M-Mentor talk is g-great and n-n-never happens at a-an inconvenient time!" He anxiously defended himself, slowly hiding behind Skylor who just looked at him with her pretty eyes narrowed
"Nice to see that you finally decided to join us Greenie!" I shouted over at Lloyd and Master Wu who both began to board the Bounty, Master Wu surveying every part of the ship we were working on to make sure everything was done correctly "It appears that you all have been doing a wonderful job at refurbishing the Bounty, perhaps you all deserve to take a small break" Our wise master told us while stroking his long beard, making us all sigh in relief as we could finally stop working
"Oh thank you Master!" Harumi practically dropped to her knees, almost knocking over her tin of red paint. The rest of us had similar reactions, except for Zane, he looked like he could keep on working for a whole two days, it sure must be great being a Nindroid. "During our mentor talk, Lloyd mentioned something about you all hoping to partake in a charity event? Please do tell me more" Master Wu brought up
Nya stepped forward to answer him, mainly because everybody else was too tired to even utter a word "Well, we thought that because of the damage caused by Captain Soto and his pirates it would be a great idea to do some kind of charity event to help fix the city" My sis informed Master Wu who listened attentively "We haven't quite figured out what we're gonna do yet, but we're sure it could be a great thing for the people of Ninjago City" Lloyd added onto what Nya had told our master
"I must say that I am quite proud to hear that you Ninja wish to help the citizens of the city in this way, there are many more ways to help other than just fighting evil foes" Master Wu imparted a bit of wisdom upon us like he often does "Yeah but throwing down with bad guys is definitely the funnest option" Cole couldn't help but chime in
Master Wu took a small moment to think before continuing to speak to us "I believe the proper way to go about setting up this charity event would be to communicate with the mayor, perhaps I could get into contact with the mayor and arrange a meeting for you all"
"That's very generous of you Master and we appreciate your offer, but I think this is something we ourselves have to figure out" Lloyd politely spoke to his uncle, who didn't seem to mind his nephew declining his offer "Well I must say I am once again proud of you Ninja for showing self reliance, and relieved as this old man simply does not understand those computer mails you all send nowadays" Master Wu chuckled softly
Making me wonder what would happen if we taught Master Wu everything he would need to know about the internet, maybe he could spread all of his wisdom across the internet instead of boring us with it, but I also fear that he would get addicted to buying all different kinds of tea online so maybe it's for the best he only knows to use a TV and a flying ship
"S-S-So how are w-w-we going to ummm s-s-set up a uhhh m-meeting with the m-mayor of the city? I'm sure she is a-an incredibly b-busy woman, and I don't t-think we c-c-can just walk in and d-demand a meeting" Jay piped up with a question, making a good point "I'm sure that for the Secret Ninja Force that are constantly saving the city, the mayor can make some time in her schedule" Master Wu said to us
"Yeah! We're always saving the city so I think this mayor owes us a meeting!" I loudly shouted with my fists clenched, the rest of the Ninja seeming to agree with what I was saying "It is most logical to conclude that the mayor could spare some time to listen to our idea considering the effort we have put into protecting the city" Zane's robotic voice agreed with what I was saying, I think, he was using a few words I didn't quite understand but it sounds like he was agreeing with me!
Lloyd nodded in agreement with the two of us "Then it's settled, we'll go to Ninjago Tower and demand that the mayor have a meeting with us! Ninjaaaa-Go!" The Green Ninja told us all before quickly putting on his black and green mask, about to begin running to Ninjago Tower only to be stopped by Master Wu's staff
"Not so fast nephew, I believe that you and the other Ninja still have some work to do regarding the Bounty, once the ship is back to its former glory then you can all go bother the mayor" Master Wu reminded Lloyd as he handed his nephew a can of paint before walking towards the warehouse, the rest of us couldn't help but chuckle at Lloyd's reaction. Guess he won't be getting out of fixing the Bounty after all
I know that I can be pretty bad with directions sometimes and often get lost in Ninjago City but there's no way I could get lost on my way to Ninjago Tower, it's the tallest building in the entire city! Located just near the centre of the city, the almost impossibly tall building easily towers over every other large skyscraper and building in the city, making them all look tiny in comparison. I've honestly lost count of the amount of times I've been on a school trip to this place
The Ninja and I gracefully landed right in front of the colossal white skyscraper, not even being able to see the top from where we were standing "I feel like this place gets taller each time I see it" I commented as we all admired the height of the building in front of us. Lloyd turned away from the building to face us, his eyes looking determined under his mask "Alright here's the plan, we'll just casually walk into Ninjago Tower, and use our status as the city's sworn protectors to get a meeting with the mayor, how hard can that be?"
Lloyd stepped through the automatic glass doors and we followed him in, almost being blinded by the incredibly bright white interior of the building "Would it kill these guys to add a little bit of colour to this place?" I said in annoyance as my gloved hands rubbed my sore eyes "I think some red would really suit this place" I suggested, getting a few eye rolls from Nya, Sky and Harumi "I for one enjoy the colour scheme that has been chosen for this building" Zane of course agreed with the colour choice, he's the White Ninja of course he's going to like the all white colour!
I rolled my own eyes at Zane as we continued through the entrance of the building, in which we shortly encountered our first obstacle in seeing the mayor, the security of the building. Right in front of the eight of us were several security guards guarding the entrance to the lobby of the building, multiple airport like body scanners lined up just ahead of us
"Uhhh L-L-Lloyd? I think t-t-this might b-be a p-problem" Jay quietly whispered to Lloyd as he tugged on the Green Ninja's arm, looking like he was incredibly terrified of the security that had noticed us walking towards them "Relax Jay it'll be fine, we're the Secret Ninja Force, we don't have to worry about security" Lloyd attempted to comfort the shaking Blue Ninja who tried not to make eye contact with the security guards
Just as Lloyd finished speaking to Jay he stepped through one of the scanners and it immediately went off, emitting multiple loud beeps and flashing red, drawing the attention of the guards who all began walking towards us "I k-k-knew this was g-g-going to be a p-p-problem!" Jay panicked as he threw himself behind me
"Is there a problem officers?" Lloyd asked the security guards, one of them stepping forward to answer the Green Ninja "We're gonna have to ask you Ninja to hand in all your weapons" The moustached officer told us, who does this guy think he is!? We're the ones who protect this city and now they're trying to take away our weapons?!
"Listen here pal!" I shoved Jay away from me as I angrily stepped toward the moustached guard, wanting to slice up his stupid little hat "Us Ninja are always the ones risking our lives to protect this city! What makes you think that you can just take away our weapons! We would never do anything bad with them!" I let loose on the guard who didn't seem fazed at all, the other Ninja seeming to agree with what I was saying "This is simply a security measure, no one is allowed into Ninjago Tower with any sort of weaponry unless given direct permission from the mayor herself, upon leaving the building you will all receive your weapons back" The security guard sternly explained to me and the other Ninja, not looking like he wanted to argue about it any further
Seeing that we really didn't have much of a choice in keeping our weapons if we wanted to see the mayor, I let out a very annoyed grunt as I reluctantly removed my two silver katanas from their scabbard and handed them over to one of the guards "I swear if I see even just one scratch on them you'll be paying for it!" I made sure to let the security guards know as I passed by them, grumbling to myself as I watched the other Ninja hand in their weapons
With us all stripped of our weapons the guards let us pass through into the main lobby of the building, once again being greeted by an all white modern design. The other Ninja and I followed behind Lloyd as he made his way towards what looked like the receptionist of the building, surely they could help us with getting to see the mayor. As the eight of us walked toward the receptionist everyone in the lobby turned their heads to look at us, whispering to each other and taking a few photos, some people even being brave enough to ask for photos with us and I was more than happy to grant their wishes. It definitely made me feel better about the whole weapon taking situation
Lloyd confidently approached the receptionist behind the rounded desk, the brown haired receptionist looking more occupied with his computer screen "Greetings, my Ninja companions and I would like to set up a meeting with the mayor" Lloyd tried to speak with the receptionist, only for the man to completely ignore Lloyd and continue doing whatever he was doing on his computer. Lloyd cleared his throat before repeating his words, once again being totally ignored by the bored looking secretary, Lloyd looked back at us and shrugged his shoulders, not exactly sure what to do
But I knew exactly what to do! Feeling myself become full of rage I moved Lloyd to the side to give this pencil pusher a piece of my mind, first it was those security guards and their stupid weapons rule and now this guy! This place really knows how to push my buttons! "Oh you are so lucky that they took away my swords buddy! That stupid tie of yours would be sliced into a million pieces by now!" I loudly shouted in the face of the occupied receptionist, not even getting a flinch from the man "You have the Secret Ninja Force right in front of you and you can't even be bothered to look away from your stupid computer! We came here to get a meeting with the mayor and we intend to get it!" I slammed both of my fists onto the desk, knocking over a red mug, still not getting a single reaction from the man behind the desk, making me even more enraged
Unfortunately before I could use some stronger words and really make this guy regret ignoring us, Skylor came up behind me and pulled me away from the man, managing to calm me down just enough so I didn't punch a hole in the white walls. Lloyd tried to get the attention of the receptionist a couple more times before finally letting out a sigh of defeat "Well I guess we're not gonna be getting our meeting with the mayor after all" He said to us in a disappointed voice, starting to walk away from the man keeping us away from the mayor
"Major bummer" Cole commented with his arms crossed "Ugh, let's just go get our weapons back and get out of this place, this was a total waste of our time" Harumi complained as she followed Lloyd towards the lobby exit, the rest of us joining with the same feeling of annoyance and hatred for the receptionist. Well maybe it was just me feeling intense hatred for that damn receptionist
"Oh my First Spinjitzu Master! The Ninja!" A sudden voice shouted, instantly getting our attention as we turned around to see the once bored and uninterested receptionist now standing on his feet, looking at us all in awe and amazement "I can't believe I'm finally getting to meet the Secret Ninja Force!" He joyfully exclaimed like a fanboy, his eyes widening once he saw me "The Red Ninja! You're my favourite! You think I can get a photo of us? Please?!" The man loudly shouted, shaking his phone in the air
Alright maybe this guy ain't so bad "Sure bro, but only on one condition" I gave the guy a wink as I began walking back to his desk, the other Ninja getting to see a master at work "Anything! You name it!" He eagerly responded while leaning over his desk "If I take this photo with you, you've gotta get us a meeting with the mayor" I negotiated with the guy, giving him an offer he simply couldn't refuse "It's a deal!" He happily accepted my terms and the two of us posed together for a selfie, I smirked under my mask as I saw him immediately make the photo his phone wallpaper
The brown haired secretary quickly typed away on his keyboard, his hands looking like a blur as they raced across the black keyboard "Looks like you guys are in luck, the mayor just so happens to have an hour without any meetings, I'll schedule you guys in and tell her you're on your way. Go ahead and use the elevator on the left to go right to the top of the building and see her" He pointed us over to a special looking elevator, probably the fanciest elevator I've ever seen
"Thanks for the help dude" I fist bumped the receptionist before motioning for the other Ninja to follow me to the elevator, as the fancy doors closed behind us I could see the receptionist looking like he was about to faint from my fist bump "Y'know, that secretary guy wasn't such a bad dude" I said as the elevator began to move upwards "Oh please, you're just saying that because he was a Red Ninja fan. You were ready to attack the guy until you found out he was a fan of yours" My sis instantly called me out
"Hey I can't help it that every Red Ninja fan is actually a pretty cool person" I put my hands up playfully, chuckling a little as I could see I was getting on Nya's nerves "All that matters is that we were finally able to get our meeting with the mayor" Lloyd leaned against the left elevator wall, letting out a sigh of relief as everything finally seemed to be falling into place
The surprisingly spacious elevator continued moving upwards, passing floor after floor after floor, it felt like we were stuck in a time loop or something as it looked like we were passing the exact same floor over and over and over again. This extremely long elevator ride was really showing how tall Ninjago Tower was, I asked Zane how many floors we had gone past and his answer was already in the triple digits! Making me groan as I imagined how many floors we still had to go past just to see the mayor, why couldn't she just come to us!? We're the heroes of the city after all!
I felt like I was about to doze off as we finally reached the very top floor of Ninjago Tower, a satisfying ding noise letting us know that the painful elevator ride had finally come to an end. Everyone in the fancy elevator let out sighs of relief as the glass doors opened up, well everyone who was actually awake, Cole and Jay were enjoying a nice nap as the two leaned against the metal walls, Zane even switched himself into sleep mode to conserve some of his power
Harumi snapped the Blue and Black Ninja awake, not fearing to give the two Ninja a slap on the back of their heads to wake them up, I really wish my phone hadn't died during the ride so I could have recorded their reactions. Zane was safe from Harumi's tactics as he simply powered himself back up, his robotic eyes looking as bright as ever
We enjoyed the fresh air that filled the spacious interior of the elevator before stepping out onto the very top of Ninjago Tower, getting an amazing view of the entirety of Ninjago City, I can see why the mayor would want her office to be up here, ignoring the threat of getting totally soaked from the rain this really is a great spot with an incredible view. The eight of us could all see the mayor sitting behind her large wooden desk right in the middle, several black suited bodyguards positioned around her
With Lloyd leading the way we began walking towards the mayor, as we walked I could feel Jay come up behind me looking especially nervous "A-A-Are we ummm s-supposed to uhhh b-bow or k-kneel in front of h-h-her?" He asked me in a whisper tugging on my right arm "You don't know? Every time you see the mayor you have to kneel in front of her, it's the law!" I couldn't help but mess with the Blue Ninja with a smirk under my mask, oh this is going to be hilarious!
"Ah the Ninja, the great protectors of our wonderful city, to what do I owe the pleasure?" The mayor greeted us, adjusting her glasses. Just as I had hoped Jay suddenly dropped to a kneeling position in front of the mayor's wooden desk, confusing everyone else but making me instantly start laughing, I was probably as red as my suit by the time Skylor stopped me, I so hope that one of the other Ninja recorded it "I'm honoured Blue Ninja but I like to think that I'm not that kind of mayor, please return to standing" The mayor spoke to Jay who I could tell was burning bright red underneath his mask, didn't help that even the serious looking bodyguards also chuckled
"Oh umm r-r-right I-I'm so s-sorry uhhhh y-y-your ummm highness" Jay frantically bumbled out in embarrassment, trying to hide his face as he found a hiding position at the very back of us, making use of Cole's larger body as the Black Ninja couldn't help but laugh as well, further embarrassing the awkward Ninja. I know I'll probably get an earful from Nya for doing that but I just couldn't help myself
"Uhh please excuse my friend, he doesn't usually meet people of your high status" Lloyd stepped in to sort of defend Jay as he continued to hide behind Cole "No apologises needed, trust me it's not the weirdest way I've been greeted" The black haired woman responded, putting some papers into her desk drawer "Now back to my question, what brings the heroic Secret Ninja Force to my rooftop office? I have a busy day ahead of me so if we could make this quick I would appreciate it"
Lloyd cleared his throat before continuing to speak "Of course, we've come to you today as we have come up with an idea that might be able to help with the recent destruction caused by Captain Soto and help the citizens of Ninjago City feel better" Lloyd told the mayor who seemed to be listening closely to what the Green Ninja was saying "Well you've certainly got my attention Green Ninja, please do elaborate" The mayor said to Lloyd interested in what he had to say
"We thought that maybe you could help us in setting up a sort of charity event, we would volunteer to help citizens with certain tasks like fixing their cars, cleaning up parts of the city and anything else that would cheer them up after all the attacks the city has seen for the past while" Lloyd explained our idea to the woman behind the desk, the mayor writing down everything the blonde teen was telling her
"It certainly sounds like a very good idea, not to mention it could give me a great public image with the people of the city" The mayor seemed to like our idea "I can see it now, Mayor Constance and the Secret Ninja Force present Ninja Day! A day to celebrate our colour coded heroes! The people will love it!" The woman cheered "You Ninja have got yourselves a charity event!"
We all looked at each other in both disbelief and excitement as the mayor gave us the go ahead for our idea, even giving us a pretty neat name "Great! So when do you think this event could happen?" The green eyed Ninja asked the mayor who was furiously typing away on her computer, already getting to work on setting up the event "I say tomorrow is a perfect day for it! The weather is said to be great and best of all Ninjago City Park just got refurbished!" Mayor Constance informed Lloyd, practically giving us twenty-four hours to prepare "Tomorrow?! I wasn't expecting for it to be that soon" Lloyd spoke in shock
"Well there's no backing out now Green Ninja, I've already closed down most of the roads around the park for tomorrow and scheduled a total Ninja Day makeover for Ninjago City Park, it's either tomorrow or never" The fast speaking mayor told our green leader "Tomorrow isn't a problem! We'll be at that park tomorrow!" Lloyd confidently promised the mayor who looked pleased with his response "Great, now I hate to shoo you all away but I do have another meeting in about ten minutes so if you would please go fight some Serpentine or something that'd be great" The black haired woman politely told us to leave her alone before she quickly went back to working
"Oh uh well thanks for your help mayor!" Lloyd gave the mayor our thanks as we left her rooftop office and once again entered the fancy elevator, I mentally prepared myself to endure another terribly long elevator ride, maybe I should take a page out of Jay and Cole's books and simply fall asleep. A little bit of shut-eye never hurt anybody, as long as I make sure to wake up before Harumi starts slapping people awake
After several set backs it looks like the Ninja were finally able to get the meeting with the mayor they desired, getting the mayor to officially give them their own charity event with the very inventive name of Ninja Day, surely nothing could go wrong on that day right? Will something actually go wrong or is this all just a red herring? What kind of activities and charitable acts will our beloved Ninja be engaging in during Ninja Day? And what does the mayor do if it rains?! Hopefully one of these questions will be answered in the next Ninja Life chapter
