Chapter One: All Nightmare Long
A/N: Hey everyone! Just to let you all know, this version is going to be a bit different than the previous one. That one was my very first piece of writing, my first book, and first thing I ever published. Numerous people have given me criticism just in the last year, which to me is unnecessary due to the fact it was written in what? 2015? Hence now I'm writing a newer version, that I believe will be far better. I've learned to better plan since then and think that I have a concrete idea. So I hope you all enjoy!
"Did you truly believe that the world will always be safe?" A voice echoed through the darkness. Cassie breathed in forcefully as she desperately searched around. Nothing but thick trees surrounded her, the only source of light from the half moon overhead.
"Who are you?" The brunette demanded to know. There were no signs of her team, no one to back her up or stand beside her against the mysterious foe. For a split second she considered calling out to them. Or even race through the trees in search of them.
"That doesn't matter," the voice scoffed. "all that you must know is that I am coming. And there's nothing you and your friends can do about it. Soon a new era will begin, and you all will bow down to me."
Cassie stood frozen in place, fists clenched at her side as her heart raced a million miles a second. Her nails dug deeply into her bare flesh, blood rushing to the palms of her hands beneath the pressure. A chill shot down her spine as the atmosphere soured. "Show yourself..." she muttered out.
The Master of Wind was met with nothing but a deep silence. Her hazel eyes began to shoot around in every direction, ceasing to rest until she could find her hidden assailant. "Now what fun would that be?" the stranger let out. "I have other plans for you. For all of you."
Continuing forward, Cassie slowed her pace as the air thickened suddenly. "Where are-" she tried to speak once more until a fiery grip latched onto her left wrist. Her dark orbs widened as her gaze fell upon a being of shadows. It's skeletal features were swallowed up by a deep grey mist, red glowing from its empty eye sockets and where its heart presumably would be.
It hissed at her, tightening its hold on her wrist. A yelp escaped her plush lips as her wrists burned up, flaring as if they were drenched in flames. It dug its boney fingers into her flesh to further the raging pain. Cassie tightened her right fist and blasted a strong gust of wind directed towards its chest.
The monster released her wrist as it got pushed back, smashing into a rotten tree behind it. She watched in horror as more of them emerged from behind the tree, eyes glaring brightly with hunger. "Fuck-" Cassie whipsered as she backed away slowly, bumping into a tree.
The monsters surrounded her, creeping closer to her. She nipped her bottom lip as a storm of wind danced slowly around them to soon pick up into a more protective barrier. The group charged at her, fighting through the gust to close in. Cassie swiped her foot up to push back a pair as they lunged at her. Another grabbed both of her wrists, punning her down against the tree as more began to grab a hold of her.
Cassie struggled against them, severing one of their boney arms in two just as the wind picking up died down. "No!" she yelled out, slamming one of them against another to shatter both into pieces. More and more surrounded the girl, overwhelming her into a panic. "no, get the Hell away from me!"
The brunette jolted upright, eyes widened as she stared across the room. Faint light from the rising sun just outside of the bounty peeked through the blinds. "Nya, shit-" she let out. Cassie's hazel orbs shot over to her roommate's bed to find it empty; the silence in the room was haunting.
The covers on Nya's bed were tucked away neatly under the mattress and the matching blue pillows aligned perfectly with the sheets. Nya tended to be quite an organized person, at least in her private abode that she so happened to share with the Master of Wind.
Cassie wiped away sweat dripping down her forehead and pushed dampened strands of hair out of her face. As she glanced at the clock, she acknowledged it was borderlining nine o'clock. "And of course no one woke me up for breakfast," she sighed to herself.
Every Wednesday, they would eat breakfast together in the morning. When one person failed to show up on time, someone would often come to their room knocking. Yet no one came for her today, leaving her to soon fend for herself to eat that morning. At the very least, she was more than capable of cooking for herself, being one of the better cooks on the team.
She let her legs dangle off the side of her bed, bare feet resting on the soft rug sprawled over the hardwood floor. For a moment she took in the soothing feeling in an effort to anchor her mind away from the nightmare.
The image of those monsters, all in their skeletal shadows, burned in her mind. Each time her eyes shut for even a second, it was if they were charging towards her once more. Their screech echoed in her mind, interrupting every thought that came to her. However, it was the thought of the mysterious voice that had called out to her that tore at her the most.
The words I am coming repeated again and again, overpowering her own thoughts. It left her to wonder if it truly was all a mere nightmare or if there had been something more to it. However, with her hopes, she could only believe that it was a result of her longing experiences of dealing with foes Hell bent on bringing down the world.
It's all going to be fine, She assured herself.
She brushed her hands over her eyes and snapped herself out of it to finally bring herself to stand. Adjusting her shirt strap, she took a quick minute to brush her hair and make herself appear a bit more presentable to the others after having woken up from such a horrific dream. Cassie popped her head out of the bedroom door, the hallway being nearly a ghost town with no trace of the others. "Okay..." she breathed out, making her way to the kitchen.
On her way, she ceased to come across anyone else, until she was greeted by Zane and Jay's presence in the kitchen; as well as the sickening stench of burnt food plaguing her nose. "I'm telling you Zane, you need to do a better job keeping Cole out of the kitchen!" the ginger rambled on, gripping tightly onto a pan with a dark, charred piece of food so far gone it was unidentifiable to even the most professional of chefs. "like, come on, this is ridiculous."
"I apologize, but if I recall correctly, we've all agreed to share the responsibility of regulating his cook time," Zane corrected, observing the mess on the pan. He pinched the bridge of his nose and took it from Jay. "but you are correct. How he could turn eggs into charcoal, I cannot comprehend."
As Zane took it upon himself to attempt to salvage the pan in the sink, Jay's vibrant blue eyes fell upon Cassie, only now being acknowledged. She already had a bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios in one hand and the carton of milk in the other. "Hello there," she spoke, bumping the fridge door closed with her butt.
"Look who finally decided to wake up," Jay chuckled, smirking in a joke at his teammate.
"Look who decided not to wake me up this morning for breakfast," she spoke back at him.
Jay raised a brow, running a hand through his hair. "Oh, we tried to wake you up but you wouldn't," he came to inform her casually. He leaned against the counter top, his attention shifting fully from Zane over to Cassie. "you must have gotten to bed late last night, because no matter what we did, you were still out like a bug!"
"Really?" Cassie questioned. "uh, yeah. I got to bed late," she lied. Her thoughts returned to her dreams, images burned into the back of her mind. She appeared to have been stuck in a horrible loop, which must have been the reason why they all failed to wake her up that morning; after all, she didn't really fall asleep late.
"Too bad, Zane made us all waffles for breakfast."
"Oh well," she merely shrugged in response. Cassie placed the bowl of cereal on the kitchen table, taking a seat. She still faced the pair as she poured in a healthy amount of milk; enough to leave to drink directly from the bowl afterwards. "I'll be around for whatever he makes for dinner."
As Jay and Zane further conversed with themselves, the Master of Wind rested her head in her fist, sighing between her teeth. Her gaze remained focused just outside through the window, watching as a small bird flew by and her concentration subsided to her thoughts once more.
Sorry that the chapter is a bit shorter than one may expect for a first chapter. I plan on having chapter two to be longer than this and such. Thanks for reading the first chapter! :)
