The end - Zane
"I can't see anything." You said to Zane, who was lying next to you. His frowning face told you that he couldn't see anything either.
In the black sky, there was nothing but the half moon and a few thin clouds. It was really disappointing.
You knew that you couldn't see the stars that well from the ground, what with all the air pollution and such. But usually, a few stars would shine through.
"We really should have done this whole 'romantic-looking-at-the- stars-while-contemplating-life- thing' on the Bounty." You said, remembering your first time on the flying ship at night. There had been so much light in the sky, it wasn't even black. It was a beautiful navy blue.
You heard the ice ninja shift in the grass besides you, muttering something about grass stains as he nodded in agreement.
You both lay in silence for a moment, occasionally cringing at the sour piano notes coming from inside. Your mom decided to take up the piano, oddly. Why? You had no clue. Your dad said since you graduated last month, she's been kind of going through a midlife crisis. And since she wouldn't have you to look after soon, she decided to distract herself with Mozart.
It really wasn't going well. It sounded like she was playing with screwdrivers taped to her fingers.
"It sounds better than last time." Zane commented. "Last time it sounded like as if she was taking a hammer to the keys."
She actually did almost do just that, after getting frustrated with a certain piece she was learning to play. Luckily, your dad was sensible enough to stop her.
Unluckily, your mom struggled and accidentally dropped said hammer on his foot. He was still limping four days later.
Your dad was also sensible enough to put a lock on his tool box soon after.
But you decided Zane shouldn't know how crazy your mom actually was, and just said "a perfect image for the sound."
Your boyfriend just looked at you, smiling as if he knew you were thinking of your mom shrieking with a hammer.
Zane had a way with knowing while not really knowing. Even when you're far apart, he seemed to be in tuned with your thoughts. Sometimes scarily so.
You wondered if reading minds is something nindroids could do.
Zane chuckled. "I know what you're thinking y/n. No, I can't read thoughts. You've asked multiple times."
Have you?
"Yes." The ice master said, seeing the look of thought on your face. "Yes, you have. And you've been saying everything out loud for the past five minutes. I am not reading your mind."
Zane sat up, and you did the same, stretching after the almost two hours you'd spent lying in the grass next to your boyfriend.
You winced again at the broken sound coming from inside, and swore you could see the notes ripping into two.
"I don't think it's safe to go inside yet." You said.
Zane nudged you with his shoulder. "Give her some credit. Learning an instrument is not that easy."
You beg to differ. You could play a mean tambourine. And it only took you three days to get such skill.
You watched as the white ninja stood up fully, brushing off the grass on his pants, muttering something about grass stains and how he shouldn't let Lloyd get a hold of his laundry again.
He offered you a hand, and, still not knowing what he was talking about, you took it.
"Well" you said, turning to go to the house. "Lets go see if we can get mom to take a break long enough for us to eat some brownies in peace."
You didn't even take one step before Zane grabbed your hand and yanked you back. "Hold on."
You glanced at him, kind of annoyed he was keeping you you from brownie goodness. "What?"
He said nothing, and just pulled you closer, placing your hands on his shoulders, then his own on your hips.
You stared at him like he had a knife between his eyes. "You want to dance? Now?"
"Why not?"
Well, there really wasn't a reason not to. You were still confused as how you went to laying down, looking for stars to this as Zane started to sway to the uneven tune of the piano from inside.
"This is completely random and I don't know how we got here." You admitted, awkwardly trying to keep up with Zane's movement. He wasn't moving that fast, sure, but seeing as how you had the dancing skills of a potato it was hard as it is.
Zane shrugged, not really knowing either, you guessed. "It was just a thought." You stepped on his toes, then raised your eyebrows, surprised he didn't complain.
Though, after a few years of you accidentally spilling things, and stepping on him, he probably had an immunity to this sort of thing.
That was how clumsy you were. It was kind of depressing.
"I love your clumsiness." Zane said, you, again, accidentally voicing your thoughts, the sincerity in his voice overwhelmingly truthful. "It is endearing."
"It's endearing to have me spill hot food on you and nearly breaking your toes?"
"Yes. It's one of your best qualities."
You laughed, half at Zane, and half at yourself. You wondered how well your dorm mates would put up with you when you went off to college.
College.
"Zane?"
"Hm?"
"Do you think my roommates will hate me?"
The ice ninja seemed to be choking on restrained laughter as he said "no, why?"
"Knowing me, I'll somehow get them tossed out a window or something."
This time he did nothing to hold back the laugh. It was a sound that would always remain one of the most beautiful you've ever heard.
"How would you manage that?"
"That's the thing! I don't know, but it'll happen somehow."
Zane spun you around as the broken piano noises began to come more rapidly. You could imagine your dad trying to watch the football game, not daring to say a word, fearing the wrath that is your mother frustrated.
"Your roommates will love you, like I do."
"I think one relationship is enough."
He rolled his eyes, and briefly took a hand off your hip to flick your nose. "You know what I mean."
Or did you?
"Yes, you do."
Okay, you really had a bad habit of speaking your thoughts.
"Well, you didn't have to be so violent to make your point." You said, not really meaning it because Zane didn't flick you that hard.
"They will love you." Zane said again, more firmly this time. "It's kind of hard not to."
Cheesy.
"The best romances are."
God dammit.
"I don't know how you'll live with out me." You said, almost completely serious.
Zane shrugged, none of his face muscles even twitching as you stepped on his foot again. "To be honest, I will probably eat a lot of ice cream and cry while I watch something on Netflix."
You had a weird feeling he did exactly that last summer when you volunteered to be a camp counselor at a summer camp. Mostly because Jay texted you and begged you to come back because a certain someone would take all the ice cream.
Well, at least you knew why he deprived Jay of his cookies and cream.
"I'll do the same. We can both be ice cream hoarding, crying, Netflix binge watching messes at the same time.... You know, just....few thousand miles apart."
He smiled then, a gesture just as beautiful as his laugh. A smile that only rivaled the one he directed towards you on your wedding day.
You and Zane jumped apart suddenly, a loud banging noise from the house cutting off the awful music you were just dancing to.
"I think my mom is using the entire tool box to assault the piano now." You said, hearing your dad screaming over the horrible death of the poor instrument.
You looked at Zane. "Please don't leave me if I ever become as crazy as my insane, but beloved, mother."
Your boyfriend took your hand in his, holding it tightly. "I wouldn't dream of it."
Dancing in the dark, with you between my arms......
Yes, I used an Ed Sheeran song as inspiration for this hot mess of an ending. Ed Sheeran is amazing.
I'm so excited because tomorrow is my last day of school before Christmas break. TWO WEEKS OF SLEEP
And family, if you're into that sort of thing......
But in all seriousness, I hope everyone has a great Christmas and New Year's.
Now I have an English test to review.
LATER GOLDEN HEARTS!!!!
