Clarity

This was my last time at swim club practice. All the third years finally had to officially retire from the clubs. After I talked to Haru Friday, I'd been dreading coming back here. It was hard enough to not have Haru but to have to see him again after that... On the bright side, Haru just mostly ignores all of us. I did the right thing breaking up with him.

I sat on the bench by the pool watching Rei and Nagisa watching Haru while he swam. He looked like he was trying hard not to care about anyone. I just shook my head. I looked up at the clouds gathering in the sky and let out a long sigh.

Out the corners of my eyes, I could see Gou come over and sit next to me. She sat there looking straight ahead for a long moment. Finally, she said, "Makoto-senpai..."

"What is it?" I looked at her, urging her to continue.

"What happened?" She looked directly at me, "There seems to be so much tension between you and Haruka-senpai."

I let out a small, unconvincing laugh as I leaned back against the bench. I looked at Gou, "I had a fight with him Friday and I broke up with him."

"Really?" Gou's expression was somber and sympathetic but I detected a hint of excitement in her voice. I just looked at her, confused. Gou took a while before asking her next question, "Makoto-senpai... what do you... think about Onii-chan?"

I furrowed my brow. I answered, "I care for your brother a lot. He's a really good friend," I felt bad about only calling Rin a friend but I didn't want to reveal what happened between me and him. But I just couldn't leave it at that, "Actually, he's... Sousuke's lucky to have him."

Without even hesitating, Gou said, "Sousuke broke up with Rin."

"What?" I sat upright, looking directly at Gou. Was she serious? What was wrong with Sousuke to do something like that. "Why would Sousuke do that?"

"Onii-chan said that Sousuke didn't want to stand in his way," was all Gou said.

"Stand in his way? For getting to the olympics?" I tried to get Gou to elaborate.

Gou paused before saying, "He didn't want to stand in Onii-chan's way of you. He wanted Onii-chan to be happy with the person he loves."

My breath caught in my throat. "Really?"

Gou nodded. She cast her eyes down as she said, "But I'm worried about Onii-chan... he says that since you're both graduating and going separate ways that you two weren't meant to be." My heart lurched, did Rin really think that? Gou went on, "But I know he's not happy about it. He wants to be with you, but he just doesn't want to have to say goodbye."

I stood up. I knew what I had to do, I couldn't let Rin think like that. I looked back at Gou, "Thank you for telling me this. I have to go see Rin."

"But what about the club?" Gou stuttered.

"They'll be fine," I smiled. I couldn't stay any longer, I had to go to Rin. I turned and started running out of the school. I heard Nagisa and Rei call after me but I didn't want to waste any time in getting to Rin.

I sprinted all the way to Samezuka, I was so out of breath by the time I reached it. I knew they would be having their swim practice but I had talk to Rin. It started to drizzle as I ran into the swim area reception. I went straight to the person at the desk, "Can I see Rin Matsuoka?"

The man looked at me, "They're in the middle of a practice right now."

"I really need to talk to him," I couldn't wait any more, I just needed to see Rin.

The receptionist looked at me once before getting up, "I'll go and get him."

Before I knew it, Rin was standing in front of me. He looked surpised, "Makoto?"

"Rin..." I went up to him and took hold of his hand, "I was talking to Gou and I just had to come see you."

Rin looked into my eyes before saying, "Here, lets go outside." I followed as he dragged me by the hand.

As soon as we were outside, I pulled him into my arms. I wanted to hold him close and never let him go. Rin buried his head in my shoulder and I began to stroke his hair. I could feel him begin to shake as he quietly said, "No... we shouldn't."

I pulled back a little to hold Rin's shoulders. I looked right at him as I asked, "Why? Why shouldn't we?"

"We're going different places, could you really say goodbye?" Despite the rain falling down on us, I could see tears start to form at the corners of his eyes.

"I'd hate myself for saying goodbye as only your friend," I bring up a hand to lift his chin, "I want to know that side of you, I want to everything that makes you smile. I want to be that person who will stand by who and support you, even if it's only for a little while. Just to know that I was yours and you were mine would be enough to complete me."

"But... but what about Haru?" Tears were now streaming down Rin's face.

"I left him." I said straight. "You're the one I want. I can't believe it took me so long to realize that you are everything I've always wanted. You see the me that no one else does. You know what I need before I do. That's something that I can't just let pass me by."

Rin bit his lip, trying to keep control of himself. He looked down as he began to speak, "I never meant to fall in love with you... You were always my friend so of course I cared about you... I never thought it was anything different, not until that party... and I didn't think at all, I just let myself get swept off my feet. And that next morning I knew it was too late and I got scared. I can't lose you."

"Then please don't end this before we begin." As the rain kept pouring down harder, the rest of the world seemed to fade away. All that was left was me and Rin, the beautiful redhead in my arms. It was at that moment that I realized something. I realized how little everything mattered if you didn't have someone to share it with and that there was only one thing I needed to be truly happy. I whispered, barely audibly, "You're all I need."

Rin looked up at me, his eyes sparkling in the rain. "Makoto," he grabbed my hand that rested on his cheek.

Finally I couldn't resist him any longer. I leaned in close and pressed my lips to his. He pressed back into me and I pulled my arm tighter around him. He stopped after a moment, saying, "Lets do this so we have no regrets."

I just nodded before leaning my head against his.
