Some Things Never Change
Owen didn't really get into much trouble with his parents when he was younger, and when he did his mother was just way too soft. He never experienced being grounded. He was never on a tight leash and even with the Navy, he never remained in one place for too long. Nothing could really prepare him for the torture of having to sit in the hospital room and heal. The only time he was allowed out was during the physical therapy. He was going crazy being confined. His only saving grace was when someone was in the room to keep him company.
He wanted Keira there every second but he knew that wouldn't be fair. So many times, she had fallen asleep in the uncomfortable armchair, only to wake up sore and hide it behind a smile. He wanted out and he wanted out now. Dr. Abano understood the young man's desperation to get out and was helping him all he could to move him along.
All Owen wanted to do was head back to the island, marry Keira and spend the rest of his days living with a beautiful wife working with dinosaurs. The boring hospital room was far from that dream.
He stared at the jello cup with hatred that sat before him on his lunch tray. If he ate anymore hospital food and jello cups he was going to lose his shit. Metaphorically and literally. He pushed the lunch tray away.
"Refusing to eat?" Dr. Abano said walking in with his clipboard.
"I can't eat this stuff ." Owen said grumpily.
"Sorry, it's the best we've got." Dr. Abano said. "But you don't have to suffer through it anymore."
Owen looked up at him, his face lit up. "Really?"
"Yes,'" Dr. Abano said, "I think the rest of your healing you can do at home."
"Oh thank you!" Owen breathed a sigh of relief before pushing himself up off the bed.
"Not so fast. I have some conditions Mr. Grady."
Owen plopped back onto his bed like a child.
"No heavy lifting straight away, you don't need to be pulling or straining anything."
"Alright." Owen nodded his head.
"And you're not going to like this one...but I recommend not working with those..uh raptors of yours."
"What?!"
"It's only temporary but you'll run a higher risk of causing more damage to yourself. Your body over the next few weeks will need rest still. Gunshots aren't just something you can sleep off. I've advised the same for your friend as well."
"But that's my job."' Owen said.
"Well, you're getting married soon. Take an longer honeymoon." Dr. Abano said.
Owen sat there before he raised his brow. "That actually doesn't sound too bad." he said with a wicked grin.
Dr. Abano stood quietly for a moment. "Just make sure the two of you come up for air once in awhile. Medical advice."
Keira was sitting outside in the resort cafe area with Dino at her feet. Her parents had convinced her to leave the hospital for a little bit but they couldn't get her to sleep. She remembered the last time they had been there, Owen had been sitting beside her after the InGen invasion. She felt so lonely without him.
"Can I sit here?"
She turned her neck to see Zach. "Of course." she told him softly.
He sat down and looked out at the water.
"Can I ask you something?"
"You already did." she teased. "Go ahead."
"Can I...well..Can I stay working on the island?" he asked.
"What? Of course you can, Zach. Why was that even a question?"
He shrugged. "After all the crazy events, I heard Aunt Claire talk about leaving the sanctuary. For good."
Keira's eyes widened in shock at the news. "Really?"
He nodded.
"Well, I can't honestly blame her." Keira said. "But Zach, just because your aunt is leaving doesn't mean you have to. You're eighteen years old, you're legally an adult now. It's up to you if you want to return to the island, not anyone else."
"I do, I do want to return to the island."
"Then nothing is stopping you. The sanctuary despite recent events is still going to run. And I think a lot of little dinosaurs would miss your presence if you didn't come back."
"Yeah?"
"Yes. The sanctuary needs you."
He grinned before tackling her into a hug. "Thank you!"
Alan and Ellie had heard the great news of Owen's release from the hospital and couldn't wait to share it with Keira. For the last couple of weeks, she had kept a strong face for Owen but when alone Ellie had seen her daughter's face. She didn't know if it was guilt, worry, sadness or a combination of the three but Ellie did know that Keira needed her other half out of the hospital.
They knocked on the door to Keira's hotel room but there was no answer. Alan knocked again before using the spare key. Inside, Keira was sound asleep on the bed, still in her boots as if she had walked in and just passed out.
Ellie walked over with a small smile before taking her daughter's shoes off just like she had done when Keira was a child. So many nights Keira would come in from playing and just fall asleep fully dressed.
"I know she's an adult, but I swear she still reminds me of when she was five." Alan whispered. "Just stick a stuffed bear under her arm and voila."
"We should let her rest until Owen gets here." Ellie said. "She's been running herself ragged. It's good to see her sleep."
Owen arrived at the hotel with his arm suspended in a sling as hospital protocol called for it. His parents had picked him up from the hospital and brought him back to the hotel where he was greeted by Alan and Ellie.
"Where's Keira?" he asked.
"She's asleep. We were debating whether to wake her or not. Sorry." Ellie said.
"No," Owen said, "I'm glad you let her sleep. She needed it. She's been running around like Wonder Woman lately."
"Here's your key." Alan said. "You might want to follow in her footsteps and get some sleep yourself."
Owen nodded before bidding everyone goodnight as he head to the room. He unlocked the door with the key card and saw Keira still asleep on the bed. He closed the door over gently and walked over.
"So peaceful." he said before climbing onto the bed and jumping up and down on it.
Keira startled awake falling off the bed. She pushed herself up quickly to see Owen standing there.
"Wha-"
"Hey there hotstuff." he grinned.
"Hi? she said. "How are you here?"
"I was released earlier, my parents picked me up and brought me back."
"So you're cleared to go home?!" she asked excitedly.
"Looks like it!"
She smiled before she gave him a stern glare. "And you couldn't have woken me up nicely?" she asked placing her hand on her hips.
"It could have been worse." he shrugged before flinching at his shoulder pain.
"Worse? You were shaking the bed like there was an earthquake?"
"I did not." he said jumping off and standing before her. "But I plan on it." he winked.
"Ha." she laughed sarcastically in his face. "You gotta heal first Fabio." she said.
He pouted. "But..but.." he followed her as she walked passed him grabbing a towel.
"No butts." she said.
"Oh yea?" He gave her a swift smack on the rear.
"Hey!"
"Grady, one. Grant, zero." he smirked.
She rolled her eyes before walking into the bathroom.
"Don't give me that look young lady!" he said going in after her. The bathroom door closed and outside in the room, only the sounds of the couple's laughter could be heard.
